Gautengs Education Department Faces Criticism for School Safety Failures
The Gauteng education department is under scrutiny for failing to meet safety standards in 34 schools across the province. Despite efforts to protect students from violence and harm under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the National School Safety Framework, these schools fell short in a 36-point preparedness checklist and a 51-point audit for governing bodies.
The checklist included basics like secure fencing, up-to-date maintenance records, visitor identification cards, clean toilets, and clear signs for drug and weapon-free zones. However, many of these schools, serving thousands of pupils, lacked the necessary resources and staffing, with high-risk schools receiving only five patrollers and four guards.
