Three farmers receive life sentences for the premeditated murder of a farm dweller in 2023. Jaco Wessels Kemp, Louise Coetzee, and Gert Frederik van der Westhuizen were convicted in the killing of Dumisani Phakathi. The attack occurred on September 16th at a chicken farm near Brits in the North West. Phakathi was assaulted and dragged into a storage area, where he later died. Kemp and Coetzee were arrested after Phakathis body was found in their truck, while van der Westhuizen surrendered two days later. The court noted the lack of remorse and racial motivations behind the crime, rejecting pleas for lighter sentences. The trio was also banned from owning firearms and ordered to hand over all weapons and licenses.
