How Money Became Dangerous
In the not too distant past, money was simple. You might have had a bank account and a mortgage, perhaps some basic investments. Wall Street didn’t have a reputation for greed and recklessness. That all started to change in the eighties, as our financial systems became increasingly complex, moving beyond the understanding of the general public while impacting our lives in innumerable ways. Our latest guest, Chris Varelas, is an industry veteran who’s had first hand involvement in the events that shaped modern money, and in his recently released book, How Money Became Dangerous, Varelas and co-author Dan Stone journey from the crime-ridden LA jewelry district to the cutthroat Salomon Brothers trading floor, capturing the key deals, developments, and players that made the financial world what it is today. The book illuminates the dark, hidden forces of Wall Street and how it has dehumanized and left behind everyday Americans. A fresh and enlightening take on how we reached this point, How Money Became Dangerous also makes the case for why Wall Street needs to be saved, if only to save ourselves. Have a money question? Taking the Work Out of Networking
Networking has garnered a reputation as a sort of necessary evil in the modern business world. Some do relish the opportunity to boldly work the room, introduce themselves to strangers, and find common career ground, but for many others, the experience is often awkward, or even terrifying. The common networking advice for introverts are variations on the theme of overcoming or “fixing” their quiet tendencies. But our latest guest, Karen Wickre, is a self-described introvert who has worked in Silicon Valley for 30 years. In her recent book, Taking the Work Out of Networking: Your Guide to Making and Keeping Great Connections, she shows you how to embrace your true nature to create sustainable connections that can be called upon for you to get, and give, career assistance, advice, introductions, and lasting connections. Karen’s “embrace your quiet side” approach is for anyone who finds themselves shying away from traditional networking activities, or for those who would rather be curled up with a good book on a Friday night than out at a party. With compelling arguments and creative strategies, this new way to network is perfect not only for introverts, but for anyone who wants for a less conventional approach to get ahead in today’s job market. Invested with Charles Schwab
This week we have a financial icon in-studio as Charles Schwab pays us a visit. Yes, that Charles Schwab, the founder of The Charles Schwab Corporation. In his just released personal memoir, Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest, Schwab describes his passion to have Main Street participate in the growing economy as investors and owners, not only earners. Schwab opens up about the challenges he faced while starting his fledgling company in the 1970s. A year into his grand experiment in discounted stock trading, he carried a six-figure debt and a pocketful of personal loans. As it turned out, customers flocked to Schwab, leaving his small team scrambling with scarce resources and no road map to manage the company’s growth. He recounts the company’s game-changing sale to Bank of America, and how, in the end, the merger almost doomed his organization. We learn about the clever and timely leveraged buyout he crafted to regain independence. A remarkable story of a company succeeding by challenging norms and conventions through decades of change, Invested also offers unique insights and lifelong principles for readers, the values that Schwab has lived and worked by that have made him one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time. Today, his company is one of the leading financial services firms in the world. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. The Art of Persuasion
In the post-fact, deeply divided world we live in, true persuasion is rare. Engaging with people holding differing opinions is rarer still. But for progress to take place, persuasion must happen. Whether it's convincing an employer you are right for the job, a customer that your product is the best, or your closed-minded uncle that good people can disagree, it takes the art, and science, of persuasion to move forward. So, how do you change someone's mind, or at least advance the conversation, when everyone is entrenched in their own points of view? Our latest guest, communication expert Lee Hartley Carter, has spent nearly twenty years advising and helping the world's most well-known companies do just that. Her first book, Persuasion: Convincing Others When Facts Don't Seem to Matter, covers all the secrets to persuading anyone, at work and in life. Filled with researched insights into how we make up, and change, our minds, as well as colorful real-world examples and actionable recommendations, Persuasion will help you hone your message and craft your narrative in order to get heard and get results. JetBlue Chairman Joel Peterson
Trust is the glue that holds an organization together. It turns deflection into transparency, suspicion into empowerment, and conflict into creativity. With it, a tiny company like John Deere grew into a worldwide leader. Without it, a giant corporation like Enron toppled. In The 10 Laws of Trust Expanded Edition, JetBlue Chairman Joel Peterson explores how a culture of trust gives companies an edge. How does it feel to work for a firm where leaders and colleagues trust one another? Freed from micromanagement and rivalry, every employee contributes his or her best. Risk-taking and innovation become the norm. And, as Peterson notes, “When a company has a reputation for fair dealing, its costs drop: Trust cuts the time spent second-guessing and lawyering.” With compelling examples, Peterson details how to establish and maintain a culture of trust. Making College Work at Any Cost
The struggle to pay for college is one of the defining features of middle-class life in America today. At kitchen tables all across the country, parents agonize over whether to burden their children with loans or to sacrifice their own financial security by taking out a second mortgage or draining their retirement savings. Indebted: How Families Make College Work at Any Cost, takes readers into the homes of middle-class families throughout the nation to reveal the hidden consequences of student debt and the ways that financing college has transformed family life. Caitlin Zaloom gained the confidence of numerous parents and their college-age children, who talked candidly with her about stressful and intensely personal financial matters that are usually kept private. Throughout the book, Zaloom describes the profound moral conflicts for parents as they try to honor what they see as their highest parental duty, providing their children with opportunity, and shows how parents and students alike are forced to take on enormous debts and gamble on an investment that might not pay off. What emerges is a troubling portrait of an American middle class fettered by the “student finance complex,” the bewildering labyrinth of government-sponsored institutions, profit-seeking firms, and university offices that collect information on household earnings and assets, assess family needs, and decide who is eligible for aid and who is not. Indebted breaks through the culture of silence surrounding the student debt crisis, revealing the unspoken costs of sending our kids to college. Have a money question? Email me here. The Economists' Hour with Binyamin Appelbaum
Before the 1960s, American politicians had never paid much attention to economists. But as the post-World War II boom began to sputter, economists gained influence and power. In The Economists' Hour, Binyamin Appelbaum traces the rise of the economists, first in the United States and then around the globe, as their ideas reshaped the modern world, curbing government, unleashing corporations and hastening globalization. Some leading figures are relatively well-known, such as Milton Friedman, the elfin libertarian who had a greater influence on American life than any other economist of his generation, and Arthur Laffer, who sketched a curve on a cocktail napkin that helped to make tax cuts a staple of conservative economic policy. Others stayed out of the limelight, but left a lasting impact on modern life: Walter Oi, a blind economist who dictated to his wife and assistants some of the calculations that persuaded President Nixon to end military conscription; Alfred Kahn, who deregulated air travel and rejoiced in the crowded cabins on commercial flights as the proof of his success; and Thomas Schelling, who put a dollar value on human life. Their fundamental belief? That government should stop trying to manage the economy. Their guiding principle? That markets would deliver steady growth, and ensure that all Americans shared in the benefits. But the Economists' Hour failed to deliver on its promise of broad prosperity. And the single-minded embrace of markets has come at the expense of economic equality, the health of liberal democracy, and future generations. Have a money question? Email me here. How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World
Every ambitious professional is trying to navigate a perilous global economy to do work that is lucrative and satisfying, but some find success while others struggle to get by. In an era of remarkable economic change, how should you navigate your career to increase your chances of landing not only on your feet, but ahead of those around you? In How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World, Neil Irwin, senior economic correspondent at the New York Times, delivers the essential guide to being successful in today’s economy when the very notion of the “job” is shifting and the corporate landscape has become dominated by global firms. Irwin shows that the route to success lies in cultivating the ability to bring multiple specialties together, to become a “glue person” who can ensure people with radically different technical skills work together effectively, and how a winding career path makes you better prepared for today's fast-changing world. Using insights from global giants like Microsoft, Walmart, and Goldman Sachs, and from smaller lesser known organizations, How to Win in a Winner-Take-All World illuminates what it really takes to be on top in this world of technological complexity and global competition. Fiscal Therapy
Keeping the economy strong will require addressing two distinct but related problems. Steadily rising federal debt makes it harder to grow our economy, boost our living standards, respond to wars or recessions, address social needs, and maintain our role as a global leader. At the same time, we have let critical investments lag and left many people behind even as overall prosperity has grown. Our latest guest, William Gale, is a leading authority on how federal tax and budget policy affects the economy, and in his latest book, Fiscal Therapy: Curing America's Debt Addiction and Investing in the Future, Gale provides a direct discussion of the challenges posed by the imbalances between spending and revenue. America is facing a gradual decline as debt accumulates and delay raises the costs of action. But there is hope: fiscal responsibility aligns with both conservative and liberal goals and citizens of all stripes can support the notion of making life better for our children and grandchildren. We face significant fiscal challenges but, if we are wise enough to seize our opportunities, perhaps we can strengthen our economy, increase opportunity, reduce inequality, and build better lives for our children and grandchildren. We do not have to kill popular programs or starve government. As the book discusses, one main goal of fiscal reform is to maintain the vital functions that government provides. To act responsibly, pay for the government we want, and shape that government in ways that serve us best. Have a money question? Email me here. Please leave us a rating or review in Apple Podcasts. Credit Scores 101
This week on the show we’re taking you to credit score boot camp with credit guru Gerri Detweiler. Helping consumers find reliable answers to their credit questions has been the theme of Detweiler’s work for the past 20+ years. Currently Head of Market Education for Nav, she helps individuals and business owners navigate the confusing world of consumer and small business credit. As an expert on credit issues, she has been interviewed for more than 3,000 news interviews including The Today Show, Dateline NBC, The New York Times, USA Today and Reader's Digest. She has also testified before Congress. Nearly two years after credit monitoring company Equifax announced that a “Cybersecurity Incident” had exposed personal information of 147 million Americans, it will pay at least $575 million, and potentially up to $700 million, to end a federal, state, and consumer claims against it. With breaches like Equifax happening on a seemingly regular basis, it’s more important than ever to keep a close eye on your credit score. And don’t forget to review your credit report every 12 months at AnnualCreditReport.com. If you find an error, report it immediately and stay on top of the process, as a lower score will cost you more to borrow. Have a money question? Email me here. Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World
Plenty of experts argue that anyone who wants to develop a skill, play an instrument, or lead their field should start early, focus intensely, and rack up as many hours of deliberate practice as possible. If you dabble or delay, you’ll never catch up to the people who got a head start. But a closer look at research on the world’s top performers, from professional athletes to Nobel laureates, shows that early specialization is the exception, not the rule. Today’s guest, David Epstein, uses his latest book, Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, to examine the world’s most successful athletes, artists, musicians, inventors, forecasters and scientists. He discovered that in most fields, especially those that are complex and unpredictable, generalists, not specialists, are primed to excel. Generalists often find their path late, and they juggle many interests rather than focusing on one. They’re also more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers can’t see. Range makes a compelling case for actively cultivating inefficiency. Failing a test is the best way to learn. Frequent quitters end up with the most fulfilling careers. The most impactful inventors cross domains rather than deepening their knowledge in a single area. As experts silo themselves further while computers master more of the skills once reserved for highly focused humans, people who think broadly and embrace diverse experiences and perspectives will increasingly thrive.
