The China Hustle Part Two
Next up on the list of films to stream this holiday weekend is The China Hustle. The documentary begins amid the depths of the 2008 financial crisis, when we meet protagonist Dan David and a band of Wall Street outsiders. These detective-like investors operate on the fringes of the financial world, scouring global markets for money making opportunities. With the U.S. economy and markets in a tailspin, they turn to China, where there is what seems like a modern day gold rush. Chinese stock market indexes are doubling every year and the potential seems endless. There’s one problem, though: U.S. investors can’t participate because they are barred from investing directly in Chinese markets. But this is America, and people always find a way. A few Wall Street operators create a novel solution by bringing hundreds of promising Chinese companies directly to U.S. stock markets. All of the sudden, US investors can get in on the Chinese miracle, without leaving the comforting confines of the NYSE and the NASDAQ. It all seems to be going well, until detectives discover that most of the companies they’re investing in are frauds, producing phony balance sheets, claiming sham inventory levels and celebrating non-existent profits. The investors flip their strategy on its head and begin to master the art of short selling, essentially, betting that a company will fail. Have a money question? Email me here. Chasing the FIRE Movement
If you're looking for something to stream over the next week or so, we're going back into the archives this weekend. First up is the FIRE movement. Today we're re-airing an interview with Travis Shakespeare, director of a documentary called Playing with FIRE, which follows 35 year old Scott Rieckens, his wife Taylor, and their toddler Jovie as the family decides to embark on a year-long odyssey to understand the rules of the FIRE movement and test their willingness to reject the standard narrative of adult life. When Scott hears a prominent leader and “early retiree” in the FIRE movement subculture interviewed on a podcast, he enlists his wife to abandon everything they’ve been taught about the role of money in adulthood and instead focus on pursuing financial independence. But doing so requires an about face since their current path has them spending every dime they make living the “Instagram” life in an expensive San Diego suburb, driving luxury cars, and eating at fancy restaurants. It’s an interesting tale full of ups and downs. If the FIRE movement is something you’re interested in, this film is a must watch. Have a money question? Email me here. Post Corona with Scott Galloway Part Two
The COVID-19 outbreak has turned bedrooms into offices, pitted young against old, and widened the gaps between rich and poor, red and blue, the mask wearers and the mask haters. Some businesses, like home exercise company Peloton, video conference software maker Zoom, and Amazon, woke up to find themselves crushed under an avalanche of consumer demand. Others, like the restaurant, travel, hospitality, and live entertainment industries, scrambled to escape obliteration. But as New York Times bestselling author Scott Galloway argues, the pandemic has not been a change agent so much as an accelerant of trends already well underway. In his latest book, Post Corona, he outlines the contours of the crisis and the opportunities that lie ahead. Have a money question? Email me here. How to Decide with Annie Duke Part Two
What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut. What if there was a better way to make quality decisions so you can think clearly, feel more confident, second-guess yourself less, and ultimately be more decisive and be more productive? That's the gist of the conversation this weekend as were joined by Annie Duke, author of How to Decide: Simple Tools for Making Better Choices. Have a money question? Email me here. Succession Star Brian Cox Part Two
What better time to binge watch a new show, or revisit a favorite, than Thanksgiving weekend? Earlier this year (pre-pandemic) I had a chance to interview Scottish actor Brian Cox, star of Succession. Cox, who plays patriarch Logan Roy on the HBO series, talks about how he’s come to understand his character, what the two men have in common and the one question about Logan he’s still struggling with. Cox reveals which character he believes is the moral compass on the show and what it has been like working with guest stars Holly Hunter and Cherry Jones. I'm telling you, if you haven't checked out the show, watch a couple episodes and I guarantee you'll be hooked. Have a money question? Email me here. Succession Star Brian Cox Part One
The Gift of Humanity Part Two
Since this episode is dropping on Thanksgiving we thought we’d do something a bit different. Instead of focusing on bettering ourselves financially, we wanted to introduce you to StoryCorps, a non-profit organization that strives to make the world better off by preserving and sharing stories, build connections and create a more just and compassionate world. In short, it serves as a good reminder of the things that matter most. And who better to help us stay in the giving thanks spirit than our guest Dave Isay, the founder and president of StoryCorps. His goal is simple: to use stories to remind us of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters. At the same time, StoryCorps is creating an invaluable archive for future generations as every interview is housed at the Library of Congress. So as you’re sitting around this Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends, I encourage you to use StoryCorps Connect (virtually) or the StoryCorps app (in person) and take part in The Great Thanksgiving Listen, a national movement that empowers people of all ages to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview.
