How to Decide with Annie Duke Part Two
What do you do when you're faced with a big decision? If you're like most people, you probably make a pro and con list, spend a lot of time obsessing about decisions that didn't work out, get caught in analysis paralysis, endlessly seek other people's opinions to find just that little bit of extra information that might make you sure, and finally go with your gut. What if there was a better way to make quality decisions so you can think clearly, feel more confident, second-guess yourself less, and ultimately be more decisive and be more productive? That's the gist of the conversation this weekend as were joined by Annie Duke, author of How to Decide: Simple Tools for Making Better Choices. Have a money question? Email me here. Succession Star Brian Cox Part Two
What better time to binge watch a new show, or revisit a favorite, than Thanksgiving weekend? Earlier this year (pre-pandemic) I had a chance to interview Scottish actor Brian Cox, star of Succession. Cox, who plays patriarch Logan Roy on the HBO series, talks about how he’s come to understand his character, what the two men have in common and the one question about Logan he’s still struggling with. Cox reveals which character he believes is the moral compass on the show and what it has been like working with guest stars Holly Hunter and Cherry Jones. I'm telling you, if you haven't checked out the show, watch a couple episodes and I guarantee you'll be hooked. Have a money question? Email me here. The Gift of Humanity Part Two
Since this episode is dropping on Thanksgiving we thought we’d do something a bit different. Instead of focusing on bettering ourselves financially, we wanted to introduce you to StoryCorps, a non-profit organization that strives to make the world better off by preserving and sharing stories, build connections and create a more just and compassionate world. In short, it serves as a good reminder of the things that matter most. And who better to help us stay in the giving thanks spirit than our guest Dave Isay, the founder and president of StoryCorps. His goal is simple: to use stories to remind us of our shared humanity, to strengthen and build the connections between people, to teach the value of listening, and to weave into the fabric of our culture the understanding that everyone’s story matters. At the same time, StoryCorps is creating an invaluable archive for future generations as every interview is housed at the Library of Congress. So as you’re sitting around this Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends, I encourage you to use StoryCorps Connect (virtually) or the StoryCorps app (in person) and take part in The Great Thanksgiving Listen, a national movement that empowers people of all ages to create an oral history of the contemporary United States by recording an interview. The Student Loan Burden Part Two
Last week in the NYT there was an article titled, For Millions Deep in Student Loan Debt, Bankruptcy Is No Easy Fix, which basically explains how darn difficult it is to discharge student loan debt, with only a few hundred people a year even trying. It's a very good read, so I suggest you check it out. It got us thinking that we should re-run an interview from last year with Caitlin Zaloom, professor and author of Indebted: How Families Make College Work at Any Cost. The book does a great job of takes readers into the homes of middle-class families throughout the nation to reveal the hidden consequences of student debt and the ways that financing college has transformed family life. 1-on-1 with Charles Schwab
We decided to re-run an interview we did a while back with Charles Schwab, yes, that Charles Schwab, the founder of The Charles Schwab Corporation. He joined us to talk about his personal memoir, Invested: Changing Forever the Way Americans Invest, in which he describes his passion to have Main Street participate in the growing economy as investors and owners, not only earners. Schwab opens up about the challenges he faced while starting his fledgling company in the 1970s and recounts the company’s game-changing sale to Bank of America, and how, in the end, the merger almost doomed his organization. A remarkable story of a company succeeding by challenging norms and conventions through decades of change, Invested also offers unique insights and lifelong principles for readers, the values that Schwab has lived and worked by that have made him one of the most successful entrepreneurs of our time.
