Ep 364Chaim Seidler-Feller - Antisemitism, Israel and the Politics of Resentment on the Campus Today

Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, the Director Emeritus of UCLA Hillel (www.uclahillel.org/), presents his Valley Beit Midrash lecture "'Twas the Best of Times, ‘Twas the Worst of Times: Antisemitism, Israel and the Politics of Resentment on the Campus Today," before an audience at Congregation Or Tzion (congregationortzion.org) in Scottsdale, AZ. DONATE: bit.ly/1NmpbsP ABOUT THIS LECTURE: Is it as bad as we’ve been led to believe? How has the increasing support for the Boycott, Sanctions and Divestment initiative effected campus climate and attitudes toward Israel? Is there evidence of greater hostility towards Jews and reports of instances of discrimination? Are the responses and interventions of the Jewish Community helpful? What has been the reaction of Jewish students and academics to the Hillel Israel guidelines? Should J St. U be included in the campus Jewish Community? Is the next generation inclined to continue being actively engaged on behalf of Israel? Does the expression of support for BDS and embrace of an anti-Zionist position constitute antisemitism? These and other questions will be considered by a four decade plus veteran of the campus wars. Ep 348Shaina Hammerman - Dirty Jews: Gender and Vulgarity in Jewish Comedy

Professor Shaina Hammerman, a professor of Jewish cultural studies for the Swig Program in Jewish Studies and Social Justice at the University of San Francisco, presents her Valley Beit Midrash lecture "Dirty Jews: Gender and Vulgarity in Jewish Comedy" before an audience at Temple Chai (www.templechai.com/) in Phoenix, AZ. ABOUT THIS LECTURE: In the past two decades, American comedy has been animated by a cohort of raunchy “sex comics” like Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Lena Dunham, Ilana Glazer, and Abbi Jacobson, and others. This lecture ties together the bawdy content of these comedians’ acts with their shared identities as women and Jews. How does their work connect to the comedy of earlier generations of so-called “unkosher comediennes” like Sophie Tucker and Totie Fields? How does their work connect to the longstanding tradition of Jewish men’s comedy? It turns out that what we understand as “funny” and what we understand as “Jewish” depend entirely on the gender of the comedian.
