<p>16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:<br><br>18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,<br> weeping and loud lamentation,<br>Rachel weeping for her children;<br> she refused to be comforted, because they are no more.”<br><br>19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead.” 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. 23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.</p>

<p>The Return to Nazareth<br><br>39 And when they had performed everything according to the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. <br>40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.<br><br>The Boy Jesus in the Temple<br><br>41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. <br>42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom. <br>43 And when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, <br>44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, <br>45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. <br>46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. <br>47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. <br>48 And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” <br>49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?”<br>50 And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. <br>51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father,<br>60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” <br>61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” <br>62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. <br>63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. <br>64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. <br>65 And fear came on all their neighbors. <p>Mary Visits Elizabeth<br><br>39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. <br>41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, <br>42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! <br>43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? <br>44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. <br>45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”<br><br>Mary's Song of Praise: The Magnificat<br><br>46 And Mary said,<br><br>“My soul magnifies the Lord,<br>47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,<br>48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.<br> For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;<br>49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,<br> and holy is his name.<br>50 And his mercy is for those who fear him<br> from generation to generation.<br>51 He has shown strength with his arm;<br> he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;<br>52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones<br> and exalted those of humble estate;<br>53 he has filled the hungry with good things,<br> and the rich he has sent away empty.<br>54 He has helped his servant Israel,<br> in remembrance of his mercy,<br>55 as he spoke to our fathers,<br> to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”<br><br>56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.</p>

A Psalm of David.<br><br><br> May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!<br> May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!<br>2 May he send you help from the sanctuary<br> and give you support from Zion!<br>3 May he remember all your offerings<br> and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices! Selah<br><br>4 May he grant you your heart's desire<br> and fulfill all your plans!<br>5 May we shout for joy over your salvation,<br> and in the name of our God set up our banners!<br>May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!<br><br>6 Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;<br> he will answer him from his holy heaven<br> with the saving might of his right hand.<br>7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses,<br> but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.<br>8 They collapse and fall,<br> but we rise and stand upright.<br><br>9 O Lord, save the king!<br> May he answer us when we call.</p>

<p>Psalm 34 English Standard Version (ESV)<br>Taste and See That the Lord Is Good<br>[a] Of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech, so that he drove him out, and he went away.<br><br>I will bless the Lord at all times;<br> his praise shall continually be in my mouth.<br>2 My soul makes its boast in the Lord;<br> let the humble hear and be glad.<br>3 Oh, magnify the Lord with me,<br> and let us exalt his name together!<br><br>4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me<br> and delivered me from all my fears.<br>5 Those who look to him are radiant,<br> and their faces shall never be ashamed.<br>6 This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him<br> and saved him out of all his troubles.<br>7 The angel of the Lord encamps<br> around those who fear him, and delivers them.<br><br>8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!<br> Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!<br>9 Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,<br> for those who fear him have no lack!<br>10 The young lions suffer want and hunger;<br> but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.<br><br>11 Come, O children, listen to me;<br> I will teach you the fear of the Lord.<br>12 What man is there who desires life<br> and loves many days, that he may see good?<br>13 Keep your tongue from evil<br> and your lips from speaking deceit.<br>14 Turn away from evil and do good;<br> seek peace and pursue it.<br><br>15 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous<br> and his ears toward their cry.<br>16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,<br> to cut off the memory of them from the earth.<br>17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears<br> and delivers them out of all their troubles.<br>18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted<br> and saves the crushed in spirit.<br><br>19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,<br> but the Lord delivers him out of them all.<br>20 He keeps all his bones;<br> not one of them is broken.<br>21 Affliction will slay the wicked,<br> and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.<br>22 The Lord redeems the life of his servants;<br> none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.</p>
