Jack's Silly Little Friendly Neighborhood Star Trek Discovery, Short Treks & Podcast
253 episodes — Page 3 of 6
S8 Ep 154074 - Kayshon, His Eyes Open (LDS2x02) (with Geoff Clarke)
EThe Lower Deckers, when the ApeCast hosted Jaxilly. Geoff, when Jack referenced LOST. Boimler, Will and Thomas on Nervala IV. Jack and Geoff, selecting dub/subs on Amazon Prime. TNG fans, when Boimler spoke of the D! Mariner and Jet, in the collector galleries. The Titan Strike Team, the Pakled snacks uncovered. Mariner and Boimler, in the Cerritos bar again. Star Trek Nerds, seeing the Spock Two skeleton. You, when you heard this episode!
S8 Ep 152073 - Strange Energies (LDS2x01) (with Barm, Geoff Clarke, Sam Stovold and Kevin Young)
ELower Decks is BACK, and so are the PD Crew (RTW+Barm), and Geoff (The ApeCast), to talk about it! Or rather, spend a few hours goofing around with each other and occasionally talking about the episode, which is a fine thing including giant heads and Gary Mitchell references. In other words, we've become GODS. One listen, and you'll agree: We're using way too many napkins.
S7 Ep 151DISCO BONUS #11 - Wonderlands, by Una McCormack (with Barm and Sean Davis)
EIT'S THE BOOK BOOK! Or is it?? Three smart people who are Jack, Barm and Sean put on their glasses for Jaxilly's third dalliance with the literary Wonderlands of Uma McCormack! As they catch up on Michael and Book (and Grudge and Indian Desmond)'s adventures between episodes 1 and 2 of Season 3, they'll also revel in their undying love for Discovery's Alice in Wonderland references, make an excessive amount of Lord of the Rings references, just start ranting about Discovery plotting some more, and most importantly, check out FOUR Trek Trailers and finally open the mailbag! This is one Wonderland where you won't get BURNED.
S7 Ep 150BONUS - Tinie Tempah: Disc-overy (with Kevin Young)
EGet out the Cheeza, because Jack and Kevin have made their third annual musical discovery: Disc-overy, by Tinie Tempah! They've already delved into 70's British Disco/Rock and early aughts French electronica, why not early teens British hip-hop? And this time, it's the first listen-through for both involved. Will they fancy TT? Will they ever look at Discs or Ovaries the same way again? WILL THEY TALK ABOUT EMINEM AND SNOOP DOGG?? Only one way to find out!
S7 Ep 149BONUS - Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Lefty Call (6x04) (with Lauren Petronaci)
EJack and Lauren finally get up in that ass to talk about The Lefty Call, in their fourth annual Jaxilly Curb Your Enthusiasm Extravaganza! This year, Lauren picks the episode, and she chose to finally give us the gift of Leon in his starmaking moment. It's a shitstorm, it's just shit, as they not only delve into Leon, but also talk about winter fruits, getting eaten by whales, their severe neuroses about toilets, their first Richard Lewis episode also, how many times Jack can say "get up in that ass" and the wonders of the alimentary canal. GET UP IN THIS ASS, LISTENERS.
S7 Ep 148BONUS - Total Recall (Commentary) (with Barm, Sam Stovold and Kevin Young)
EThe Picard Debut Crew sits down to hang out and do a commentary on Total Recall! It's one of the most fun movies ever, and here is the best commentary on it. We also count down the many, many Star Trek characters who appear in the movie. 'Nuff said! GET YOUR ASS TO THIS COMMENTARY.
S7 Ep 147BONUS - Star Trek Character Commercials, Pt. 2 (with Barm and Sam Stovold)
EIn the thrilling conclusion to the last episode, Jack, Sam and Barm talk about another twenty commercials with Star Trek characters in them, and then read some emails and shit. (Follow along with the gang by checking commercials 22-39 yourself on Jack's Youtube playlist "Star Trek Character Commercials")
S7 Ep 146BONUS - Star Trek Character Commercials, Pt. I (with Barm and Sam Stovold)
EJack perverts Sam's very reasonable idea of watching every commercial they can find of Star Trek actors playing their characters in TV commercials by creating exceptions and watering down the concept until the episode becomes a bloated, overly long mess that needed to be split into two parts to even approach being manageable, yet still manages to be a lot of fun! Barm is along to assist in this process. (Follow along with the gang by checking out the first 21 commercials yourself on Jack's Youtube playlist "Star Trek Character Commercials")
S7 Ep 145DRUNK STAR WARS, Pt. XI - Star war The Third Gather: Backstroke of the West (Commentary) (with Kregg Castillo and Barm)
EOn this 11th installment (again, not the same 11 you would think), Jack and Kregg are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, as they record a drunken commentary and make jokes about what is already essentially a joke; the fan dub of Episode III called Star war: The Third Gather - Backstroke of the West, based on a bootleg DVD with a Google translated into English version of the Chinese dub script of the film! And Barm is here to join them, kind of! If you want to follow along, look around for a copy because those Youtube ads are gonna SCREW UP YOUR EVENING.
S7 Ep 144BONUS - PROJECT JOHN (with Barnacle and John Davidson)
EBack through the gate!
S7 Ep 1431?? - Special Delivery (SQDSV2x09) (with Barnacle and John Davidson)
EJohn Davidson once again joins Zack and perennial hanger-on Barnacle to finally get back through the Stargate to talk about SeaQuest DSV again, and we got ourselves a doozy here! That's right, it's the one where DAGWOOD IS ON TRIAL FOR MURDER. As we dive (see what I did there?) deep into some classic season 2 SeaQuest, the boys reminisce on the profound effect Dagwood's plight had on them as kids, cardboard Santas, the deceptively deep wisdom of Darwin, the old Scheid'/'Side debate, and dish on why SeaQuest might actually be the best show of the whole damn Stargate franchise. Hop into the gate for some aquatic adventure with the best seamen around!
BONUS - Redshirts by John Scalzi (with Barm and Kaela Neufeld)
ESister! Sooooo, Barm has a ….younger sister! This podcast has now betrayed her, too. Kaela Neufeld makes her Jaxilly debut to talk about one of her (and now our!) favorite books, John Scalzi's Redshirts! The Barms and Jack dive into a meta(physical) masterpiece of dry comedy, satire and metafictional tomfoolery, all inspired by classic Trek cannon fodder! Along the way, they'll dish on some Trek news and open the magic box to chat also about Philip Seymour Hoffman, Long Island, The Orville, Gangs of New York, Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes, yetis on spaceships, and the return of the Outrageous Okona. Jack blathers on about how timespace is an illusion again. Listen and become a part of the narrative!
S7 Ep 141BONUS - A Bug's Life (with Lauren Petronaci)
EThere's more to Lauren Petronaci than loving Larry David, Godzilla and lemurs! She also loves the 1998 Pixar classic A Bug's Life, and she's here to talk about it with Jack! Along the way, they'll also talk about some other classic Pixar films, planets and the solar system, birds, etymology, the wonderful cast of this movie, size and scale, Madagascar, Godzilla vs. Kong, BUGS of course, and so much more! Look at all the colors of the …. FUN.
S7 Ep 140PICARD BONUS #3 - Star Trek: Picard - The Dark Veil, by James Swallow (with Barm and Sean Davis)
ERike Strike! Jack and Barm, and making his Trek book castin' debut, Sean Davis, get together to talk Riker, Picard and the ten pages or so of material in the novel that bear his name, Star Trek: Picard: Dark Veil! It's another big boy, as the Riker Boyz gab about the Jazari, the Titan, and Romulans, Romulans, Romulans! They also weigh in on heady topics, like the continuity of culturally accepted emotional displays, conspiracy theories and their disruptive effect on culture (and whether that's fun to read about or not), 1995 PC games, childhood, and FISH. Riker didn't steer us wrong, and he won't steer you wrong either.
S7 Ep 139PICARD BONUS #2: Star Trek: Picard - Countdown (with Barm)
EHad enough of the Emerald Chain and the Burn madness? Why not take a little dip into some cool refreshing Picard comic waters with Jack and Barm, where the only things you·ll have to worry about are what ships in 2365 look like, how much like Yul Brynner Picard looks, how much like Napoleon Dynamite Raffi looks, and what two idiots asking Alexa questions on a podcast looks like. Looks like a short silly ep where Jack had to go to work!
S7 Ep 138072 - That Hope Is You, Pt. 2 (DIS3x13) (with Barm, Geoff Clarke, Kregg Castillo, Sam Stovold, Sean Davis and Richard Dunham)
EIt's a Disco Party, and Jack has invited a cadre of glorious guests to celebrate his newfound freedom from the pressures of endlessly podcasting about Star Trek every week. Barm, Sam Stovold (Marvel Star Wars Explorers), Sean Davis (After the Credits), Kregg Castillo (Golden Boy?), Richard Dunham (Ghibli Minute), and an Ape-on in the form of Geoff Clarke (The ApeCast), are all here to dish on the finale and their thoughts on Season 3 in general. This megasize episode is more exciting than the BURN, and will surely resonate throughout subspace for all eternity.
S7 Ep 137071 - There Is A Tide... (DIS3x13) (with Barm and Amos Dunn)
EWe're coming into 2021 TOO HOT, as Amos Dunn (Ei Sa Da) joins Barm and Jack to FINALLY talk Disco. And we've got a lot to talk about, like Osyraa's machinations, our enduring love of Admiral Vance, Sybok's mom, the last days of Trump, England's reduced stature, the return of Kenneth Mitchell, a rainbow of Hannibals in the Emerald Chain, and the passing of the legendary MF Doom. Oh, and Michael Burnham is John McClane. Yippy-ki-yay, motherinos!
S7 Ep 136070 - Su'kal (DIS3x11) (with Barm and Kregg Castillo)
EHappy New Year's everyone! Sneaking in just under the wire, Jaxilly COMPLETELY redeems 2020 with the classic JackBarmKregg combo talking Su'kal! We're also talking baby's first holodeck, the royal We, video games, Freud, the Ba'ul, our feelings on BURN revelations, some amazing HotTheories, and The Mandalorian, AGAIN. Does 2020, and this episode Su'kal? Nope, they're SATIS, and so are you.
S7 Ep 135CARLOS BONUS #4 - The 4th Annual Continuity Carlos Christmas Special
EMerry Christmas and Happy Holidays, everyone! Carlos has been getting into the Christmas spirit, working hard to bring you his renditions of some classic holiday tunes! But Jack got so jealous, he decided to get in on the fun, too. It's a double album of holiday cheer! Find out what it sounds like when two guys who can't sing or compose music at all make a whole album! It's sure to find its way into your yearly rotation, and your heart.
S7 Ep 134069 – Terra Firma, Pt. 2 (DIS3x10) (with Geoff Clarke, Sam Stovold, Kevin Young and Sean Davis)
ECelebrate the holidays with one of the biggest Jaxilly BLOWOUTS ever! Hey, it's the end of the year, everyone had drinks and the day off, we have to talk about CHINGY'S blessings, the Mirror Universe, Georgiou leaving the show, the return of the Guardian of Forever (aka CARL), the biggest mailbag ever, and of course THE MANDO FINALE! So join a Chingy-approved Jack, a Luke-likin'(?) Sam (Marvel Star Wars Explorers), a tumbleweed-filled apartment owning Geoff (The ApeCast), a very passionately opinionated Sean (After the Credits), and a Guardian-hoppin' Kevin (Reopening the Wormhole) for a rip-roarin' time! You'll find there's never enough of THIS self-indulgence.
S7 Ep 133068 - Terra Firma, Pt. I (DIS3x09) (with Barm, Sam Stovold, Kevin Young, and Kristina Kephart)
EJack, Sam, and Kevin are Reopening the Wormhole to a time podcasting with Barm and she of the glistening Klingon hams, RTW appearances, Picard Finales, and SMB commentaries, the delightful Kristina Kephart! They are here to talk about the wonders of CARL, decide the perfect trail mix, mourn the loss of salty Stamets, and above all, debate the merits of Georgiou as they once again delve into the mirror universe. Come for those alluring mirror women, but STAY for Jack live on cast experiencing possibly the most unexpected and wonderful moment of his life, courtesy of great friends, and the G.O.A.T.!
S7 Ep 132DRUNK STAR WARS, Pt. X - The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special (with Kregg Castillo)
E2020 lurches to an end with a sputtering cough, and within the putrid phlegm arises another installment of DRUNK STAR WARS! The Force goes back to bed as a scrumpy-fueled Jack and a still bathroom recording Kregg choke on some Disney tip-yip. Through the drunken haze, the two recognize the ways that this little Lego thing is strong in the Force, and also, the ways in that is why you fail. (Too drunk to make that sentence work proper). Wouldn't be proper!? Wouldn't have it any other way. HAPPY LIFE DAY.
S7 Ep 131067 - Sanctuary (DIS3x08) (with Barm and Kregg Castillo)
EJack, Barm and Ferengi Expert and Golden Boy Kregg Castillo are BOOKING it to BOOK CENTRAL to discuss SANCTUARY. Which also means they gon' talk about Detmer and Tilly's Andorian hubby getting their trench run on with Grudge in their lap, Emperor Georgiou at peak intolerability (and Culber reacting appropriately), the Section 31 show they would actually be excited to see, ESL aliens, pronouns, Stamets jam sessions, really liking this episode, SEA LOCUSTS and fucking BOBA FETT. MANIFEST!
S7 Ep 130066 - Unification III (DIS3x07) (with Barm)
EBarm and Jack decide to live together on their own planet away from everyone else to talk about Unification III. It's the return of Mama Burnham, the Rommies and Vulckies, Prime Concernham and Captain Saru's questionable personnel decisions! This holo-torch lit debate also features arguments from Barm that Col. Tigh and Mr. Lahey are the same person, touches on the wisdom of Spock, revisits Unification I&II, reminds us that axioms are simply ideas and not laws, reevaluates the works of Heinlein, and includes shocking reveals from your co-hosts: Barm would rather see Picard murdering Klingons than Leonard Nimoy in TNG, and Jack HATES temporal mechanics so much that he doesn't even think they're real. Oh, and GROGU. This episode wasn't achieved through politics or diplomacy, but it was achieved.
S7 Ep 129065 - Scavengers (DIS3x06) (with Barm and Sam Stovold)
trailerEBarm is back from his whirlwind November tour of Castville, and joins Jack and Sam Stovold (Marvel Star Wars Explorers) to talk SCAVENGERS. That means you'll be digging through the garbage to find gems like the story of the vagina-faces, a discussion of what working with people from a thousand years ago would REALLY be like and a show from Admiral Vance's perspective, an attempt to deconstruct the Burn, references to The Running Man, and noted Georgiou-haters actually kind of… liking Georgiou? Also, we talk a lot about Discovery actually doing good character plotting and writing, blah blah. GRUDGE, TILLY BAJORANS, LINUS!
S7 Ep 128064 - Die Trying (DIS3x05) (with Geoff Clarke)
EThe ApeCast tackles Disco Season 3! For the first time in Season 3, Geoff Clarke (The ApeCast) brings his still SOMEWHAT unbiased Ape Peepers to Trek, and (mostly) likes what he sees, and it's not just because master body-horror director and Canadian national treasure David Cronenberg is appearing in this episode for whatever reason (we're not complaining!). He and Jack also relish any chance to talk Final Fantasy VIII, the Temporal Cold War, the Smoke (and Smog) Monster, Robert Picardo, Admiral Vance (Vance Admiralty), and, as we bid farewell to Nahn, BARZANS, BARZANS, BARZANS. Bear witness to the ascension of Castville's new Barzan/Canadian expert.
063 - Forget Me Not (DIS3x04) (with Sam Stovold and Sean Davis)
ETRILL POOLS! They're back, and so are Sam Stovold (Marvel Star Wars Explorers, Reopening the Wormhole) and Sean Davis (After the Credits) to do the deepest dive (into a Trill pool) on Trills since Reopening the Wormhole! Recent events, and a delicious new Jaxilly drank have the guys in high spirits as they debate the relative merits of Trill adventures and disastrous dinner parties. They'll also find time for taco talk, Ocarina of Time temple-ranking, Smoke Monster HotTheories, discussing characters as conduits, and seeing how many different ways Sean can find to say Culber's name. Dive into the this cool refreshing Trill Pool with us, and let us be your symbionts.
S7 Ep 126062 - People of Earth (DIS3x03) (with Barm, Kregg Castillo, Kevin Young and Sam Stovold)
EIt's the first big Disco party of Season 3, as Jack, Sam and Kevin of RTW, Barm, and Ferengi expert and Golden Boy Kregg collide in orbit over Earth, and tensions are running HIGH when the group finds itself dividing into factions. (And this is even before George Lucas pops in to offer up his hot takes.) Sure, we can all agree on key issues like Book = delightful, Georgiou = irritating, Saturn = awesome, but is this episode more overly melodramatic preponderance, or one of the best episodes of the series?? It's the most contentious issue in America today, without question, but the difference is, we have ANSWERS. Or do we? The only way to rip the bug alien helmet off and open your mind is to PRESS PLAY.
S7 Ep 125061 - Far From Home (DIS3x02) (with Barm and Sean Davis)
EIt's FIRST SEANTACT as Sean Davis (who somehow hasn't been on to talk about a Discovery episode yet) joins Jack and Barm to talk about the wacky continuing adventures of Captain Saru, Jett Reno, Emperor Georgiou and other classic characters after Disco reopened the wormhole. Along the way, we'll wax nostalgic for "boring Star Trek", see how far we can stretch Sean's "Trek is Manifest Destiny" analogy, ponder the mysteries of personal transporters, and OMG Michael Burnham is a beautiful angel sent from heaven that I love so much
S7 Ep 124060 - That Hope Is You, Pt. 1 (DIS3x01) (with Barm and Kevin Young)
EEat your heart out, Covid, because we've got DISCO FEVER! Jackshow mainstay Barm (he brought his own mic!) and Kevin (Reopening the Wormhole) join Jack to talk about the wacky and kind of wonderful opener to Season 3! We've got a LOT to discuss here, including a lengthy discussion on the history of vomit in Trek, FUN Burnham, Indian Desmond, the Temporal Cold Wars, George Miller, the DC movies again, Scandinavia, Grudge and Trek pets, and FRUIT. This episode is worth spending your life sitting at a desk in an empty room doing nothing every day for.
S6 Ep 124059 - No Small Parts (LDS1x10) (with Barm, Geoff Clarke, Kregg Castillo, Kevin Young, and Sean Davis)
EJack's Silly bids adieu to Lower Decks (and one of our favorite characters) for now, with a group of All Stars! Jack is joined by Barm, Kevin Young (Reopening the Wormhole), Geoff Clarke (The ApeCast), Ferengi expert Kregg Castillo (Golden Boy?) and Sean Davis (After the Credits) to talk SERIOUS Lower Decks, Peanut Hamper and Exo-comps, the return of Pakleds, Bae Bajoran Badasses, Riker's millionth appearance, and our feelings on Lower Decks as a whole! Plus Phat Pakled returns to drop some HOT RHYMES. We're going out like a CHAMP.
S6 Ep 119058 - Crisis Point (LDS1x09) (with Barm and Richard Dunham)
EJack Stovold (Reopening the Wormhole, The ApeCast) directs! In this thrilling chapter of the Jack's Silly Saga, Jack (JACK STOVOLD) and Barm (BARM) are discussing the 9th episode of STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS, when Richard (RICHARD DUNHAM) appears – and their lives are changed forever. Together, the three of them will discover the truth behind why this episode reminds them of STAR TREK movies --- and how the power of cinema brings people together. – "Diverting fun for the whole… family! Three thumbs up!" – Arex, the Chingyville Times (End Theme "Yama no Ongakuka" by Keen on Keys.)
S6 Ep 121057 - Veritas (LDS1x08) (with Barm and Kevin Young)
EThe trial of the Millenium of Aftermath/The Willenium is listening to Jaxilly's coverage of VERITAS. Court is now in session, and Jack and witnesses Barm and Kevin Young (Reopening the Wormhole) swear to tell the veritas, the whole veritas, and nothing but the veritas about their feelings on… Veritas. Whether that means spilling the eels on Jack's ice cube problem, digestion tips, memes, Bill and Ted, Eric Bana's career, Bugle Boy, Lars von Trier's filmography, The Good Place, Tokyo Disney Sea, the bird family of anatidae, or Kurtwood Smith, so be it. Sake ni shinjitsu.
S6 Ep 120056 - Much Ado About Boimler (LDS1x07) (with Barm and Sam Stovold)
EJack, Sam and Barm reunite just to hang out and talk Trek, and it feels so good. And this seems to be the perfect episode for them to do just that! It's really a hangout sesh, as the Boims talk about their love of Boimler, their admiration for the whole voice cast, the positive evolution of Mariner, and a buncha real nerdy shit, like reveling in the second EDOSIAN to appear in Trek, cataloguing the freaks, unveiling the secret history of McDonald's and Doug Jones, defending Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 and laughing at language nerd Jack's apparent inability to identify basic dialects. And Sam is here to respond to our reactions to the Deanna Smackdown and credit the podcast with LIFE-CHANGING REVELATIONS. Want some of those? LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE.
S6 Ep 119055 - Terminal Provocations (1x06) (with Barm and Geoff Clarke)
EGeoff Clarke (Jack's partner in crime on the ApeCast) joins Jack and Barm to share his thoughts on Lower Decks and TERMINAL PROVOCATIONS, specifically. But ESPECIALLY Badgey. But we're also here to talk JG Hertzler, TNG again (a lot), Holodeck tomfoolery, that one Fletcher-type we all know, the future ascendance of Mexican food, Lethal Weapon, what the title could mean, and the whole DECAL pronunciation situation. You're gonna go APE for this one.
S6 Ep 119054 - Cupid's Errant Arrow (LDS1x05) (with Barm and Cam Siemer)
EParasite-induced love is in the air, as Barm and Jack are joined for the first time on this podcast by What Were We Watching·s Cam Siemer, one of the Founding Fathers of Castville, to talk about Bradward in Love. We reflect on Lower Decks (and Mariner) finding their groove, the disturbing lack of Dr. Katz, Star Trek Lore (and Data), DEEP SPACE NINE and where this bar flashback takes place, our innate Boimlerness, the X-Men film franchise, the bizarre history of racial surgical alterations in James Bond movies and Bill and Ted·babble. It·s a Cam Sundae with Barm sprinkles.
S6 Ep 117053 - Moist Vessel (LDS1x04) (with Barm and Sean Davis)
EThe inimitable Sean Davis joins Jack and Barm in making juvenile innuendos about the title "Moist Vessel", and pulls off a "hi-third-oh" unknown feat on this show-- being the first guest to write an email into the show DURING his appearance, in case you're wondering what all the keyboard clacking that could only be partially edited out is. They're also talking about Tellarites, American puritanism, BEES, emotional honesty, binary fandom, and especially TNG, like, a lot. This is one podcast episode that is going to get YOU moist, so check it out!
S6 Ep 116052 - Temporal Edict (LDS1x03) (with Barm, Kevin Young and Jason Butze)
ETo talk about time, and crystals, (but not time crystals) Jack, Barm, and Kevin are joined by RTW email legend Jason Butze, making his JSLFNSTDSTPALDP debut! The gang has a blast diving into such diverse topics as the mistakes Jack has made, Butze's take on Picard, Ben Franklin's coolness, work-ruining changes from corporate overlords, Sliders, Garfield and newspaper comics, the exhausting sex fantasy fulfillment tasks that shapeshifters must face, and so much more. Oh, and Temporal Edict, as well. Hop in your Crystal Car and speed towards fun!
S6 Ep 115051 - Envoys (LDS1x02) (with Kregg Castillo)
EIt's the second episode of Lower Decks, and the first appearance of a Ferengi in Star Trek in EIGHTEEN YEARS, so you know who Jack had to grab for this one! That's right, it's Space Merchant Ferengi expert Kregg Castillo, finally getting to talk about Ferengis on Jack's Silly! In addition to waxing rhapsodic over their profound love of Quimp, the Dynamic Duo talk about where LDS has casually landed on the "Klingon Question", Rutherford's new grooves, fast talkin' characters, and so much more! In addition to the debut of a brand new recurring feature, this episode will go down in history as the first official public announcement of a very special new project from Kregg that is sure to change lives! This episode, I tell ya, it's Golden, Boy.
S6 Ep 114050 - Second Contact (LDS1x01) (with Barm, Sam Stovold & Kevin Young)
ESaddle up! Let's lock, load, and LOOK at the newest member of the Star Trek Crew (of shows). To do that, Jack has brought back the P.D. Crew (himself, Barm, and Sam and Kevin from Reopening the Wormhole) to check out Second Contact, the first outing of Lower Decks. Is it good Star Trek? Is it funny? Does it have ENOUGH Star Trek/California references? Is it similar/different enough from The Orville/Rick and Morty? Most importantly, is it FUN!? In addition to these important questions, the gang will rank the Riddlers, discuss their favorite punctuation marks, find out who wrote Monkees songs, open a ginormous mailbag, and so much more! No matter what YOUR take on Lower Decks, you're gonna have a good time hearing ours.
S5 Ep 113DISCO BONUS #11 - Die Standing, by John Jackson Miller (with Barm)
ELOWER DECKS!? Never heard of it. At this podcast, all we know is DISCO, and we got DISCO BOOK FEVER. Jack and Barm, widely known as the two biggest Emperor Georgiou (and Section 31) fans in the world, have joined forces to discuss the OTHER crazy thing between the first and second seasons of Discovery that was happening, with crazy starfish people, slug people, and lightning ball people during the wacky adventures of Emperor Georgiou, Finnegan, and Emony Dax. All right, yeah, we're gonna talk about Lower Decks for the next ten weeks, but before we do, why not take one last dive into a Blood Devil pool and see how just fucking NUTS Discovery can be when the cameras are facing elsewhere?
S5 Ep 112DRUNK STAR WARS, Pt IX - Star Wars, Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (with Kregg Castillo)
EThe drunk speak! That's right, like our beloved Sheev, DRUNK STAR WARS has arisen from the dead, but the only difference is that this makes sense! Or as much sense as any drunk Star Wars episode could make. Jack's bottle of whiskey may have cost 80 dollars less than Kregg's, but the end result is the same: another few fantastic hours of drunk assholes whining about Star Wars! Jack has FINALLY found a sympathetic ear to try and keep track of what the hell is happening with lightsabers in this movie, commiserate about Death Star nonsense, pin down what is wrong and right about Threepio and hang out with Watto in Mos Eisley. The alcohol, it is IN THEIR BLOOD.
S5 Ep 111BONUS - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Sober? Commentary) (with Barm and Kregg Castillo)
ERemember back when Jack, Barm, and Kregg discussed Saru's origins, and promised you a Sober Last Jedi commentary track? Of course you do, and 18 or so months later, here it is, because Jack can't get enough of doing Last Jedi podcasts. The Golden Boy, the guy who's on like 70% of the episodes of this show, and your Jedi host are back to talk about The Last Jedi AGAIN, and this time you get to hear a cat vomiting WHILE YOU WATCH! Once you've watched The Last Jedi this way, you won't ever be able to watch it without it. If you can only listen to ONE Jack Last Jedi podcast and you've already heard the other four, this is the one for you. You have the spirit of a TRUE JEDI!
S5 Ep 110BONUS - Daft Punk: Discovery (with Kevin Young, Geoff Clarke and Sam Stovold)
EIt's time to Discover Discovery all over again! This time, the robotic Jack and Kevin of last year's ELO party are joined by a couple of daft punks, in the form of Sam Stovold and Daft Punk superfan Geoff Clarke of the ApeCast, to talk about 2001's Discovery. Inevitably, as the alcohol flows freely, they're gonna talk about Interstella 5555, and branch off into a bevy of musical topics and other tangents as well, as they go through the album track by track. So dye your skin blue and get ready to rock. Veridis Quo, y'all!
S5 Ep 109BONUS - Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Black Swan (7x07) (with Lauren Petronaci and Sam Stovold)
EBeloved moths, the only Discovery podcast that is distermined not to talk about Star Trek: Discovery is BACK with its 3rd annual Curb Your Enthusiasm episode! Lauren and Jack are ready to talk about asshole and swan killer Larry David, but HERE COMES A NEW CHALLENGER! Sam Stovold has discovered the cheat code to get on to podcasts, and that is making the host feel guilty about their past negligence. It's all good though, as Sam makes a fine addition to the Curb Team, as they investigate whether the eponymous swan is named Kyoko or Kiyoko, enjoy the rare quartet of Larry, Jeff, Cousin Andy and Funkhouser, reminisce on their large bird experiences, fantasize about Larry David and Patrick Stewart switching places, talk Godzilla AGAIN, and finally, discuss genre fiction that TRANSCENDS its trappings. Mr. Takahashi himself couldn't find it in his heart to condemn this episode.
S5 Ep 108DISCO BONUS #10 - Star Trek Discovery: Aftermath / Captain Saru (with Barm)
EIt may be the millennium of Aftermath, but Jack and Barm aren't awarding any platinum plaques to Star Trek: Discovery's lackluster third comic series. It's Klingons again, and not even the combined powers of Pike, Spock, and a John Colicos looking Kor are enough to save this comic from an anemic story and dodgy artwork, plus shitty binding that has the TPB literally falling apart in your hands, as a final insult. On the plus side, our magnetic co-hosts found the Captain Saru annual to be some pretty zippy fun, and enjoy talking about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Unlike L'Rell, you're not gonna wanna crash this fantastic episode into a mountain.
S5 Ep 107BONUS - Super Mario Bros. (Commentary) (with Barm, Sam Stovold, Kristina Kephart and Josh Lee)
ETrust the fungus, and trust Jack's Silly to bring you the BEST random audio commentaries for movies in the podcast GAME! This ain't no edited postgame discussion, it's a commentating live as the movie plays thrill ride! Jack's Silly must have swallowed a mushroom, because it's this show's biggest audio commentary yet! S5 Ep 106PICARD BONUS #1 - Star Trek: Picard - The Last Best Hope, by Una McCormack (with Barm)
EJack's Silly coverage of Picard is NOT OVER YET, not as long as Una McCormack, Jack, and frequent guest Barm have anything to say about it. In fact, being a prequel, it might be more accurate to say Picard hasn't even BEGUN yet! Jack and his Trek book buddy Barm unpack Una McCormack's shockingly good novel about the fifteen years leading up to ST: Picard in this fitting coda to our Picard coverage (for now). Guys, MAYBE this should have been the show?? Whatever the case, if, like most right-thinking people, you want to dive into a world of refugee relocation, political tomfoolery, bureaucratic nightmares, Picard's psyche, Planet Raffi, Geordi's pain, Maddox's egotism, and the frustrating and unending puzzle that is Romulan culture, let us be your tour guides! (Also, buy the book!). As a bonus, tune in to hear musical talent level 0 Jack's most elaborate musical effort yet! Jolan tru!
