Ep 18The Essence of Prayer (Tips on Developing Khushoo' in Salah)
“Successful indeed are the believers, those who offer their salaah (prayers) with all solemnity and fullsubmissiveness.” [al-Mu’minoon 23:1-2] Hudhayfah (may Allaah be pleased with him) used to say: “Beware of the khushoo’ of hypocrisy.” He was asked, “What is the khushoo’ of hypocrisy?” He said, “When the body shows khushoo’ but there is no khushoo’ in the heart.” Fudayl ibn ‘Ayaad said: “It was disliked for a man to show more khushoo’ than he had in his heart.” One of them saw a man showing khushoo’ in his shoulders and body, and said, “O So and so, khushoo’ is here” – and hepointed to his chest, “not here” – and he pointed to his shoulders. (al-Madaarij, 1/521) Concerning the virtues of khushoo’ and as a warning to the one who neglects it, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Five prayers which Allah has made obligatory. Whoever does wudoo’ properly for them, prays them on time, does rukoo’ properly and has perfect khushoo’, it is a promise from Allaah that he will be forgiven, but whoever does not do this, has no such promise – if Allah wishes, He will forgive him, and if He wishes, He will punish him.” (Reported by Abu Dawood, no. 425; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 3242).Concerning the virtues of khushoo’, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said: “Whoever does wudoo’ and does it well, then prays two rak’ahs focusing on them completely [according to another report: and does not think of anything else], will be forgiven all his previous sins [according to another report: will be guaranteed Paradise].” (Al-Bukhaari, al- Bagha edn., no. 158; al-Nisaa'i, 1/95; Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6166).

Ep 10Break the Curse
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided? (2:170)

Ep 9The Importance of Being Still
Mindfulness in Islam (al-muraqabah) is a conscious state of comprehensive awareness of Allah and our inner states in relation to Him. In its complete form, it is the highest spiritual state attainable—the perfect realization of excellence in faith (al-ihsan). Modern science has demonstrated the efficacy of mindfulness exercises in procuring a number of health and wellness benefits, even in a non-religious context. These insights can be critically synthesised with Islam’s traditional concepts of meditation to produce practical contemporary techniques that cultivate Islamic mindfulness, enhance worship, and enrich our quality of life. Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the parable of the believer is that of a piece of gold. Its owner blows upon it, yet it never changes or diminishes. Source: Musnad Aḥmad 6833 To be like the rock that the waves keep crashing over. It stands, unmoved and the raging of the sea still around it. — Marcus Aurelius, The Meditations I have discovered that all the unhappiness of men arises from one single fact, that they cannot stay quietly in their own room. — Blaise Pascal Imam Al-Ghazali writes: The heart is in the position of a mirror that is surrounded by influential matters and these traits proceed to the heart. As for praiseworthy traits that we have mentioned, they will polish the mirror of the heart and increase it in brilliance, light, and radiance until the clarity of truth shines from within it and the reality of the matter sought in religion is unveiled.

Ep 8Muharram the Month of Allah
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.. ” (Surah At-Tawbah, Verse 36) *The Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: “The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha’ban.” * (Sahih Al Bukhari)
Ep 7A Vital Ingredient for a Happy Marriage
This was a talk delivered just before officiating the marriage of a close student of mine. The reflections deal with unconditional love. In the purest sense, unconditional love is about caring about the happiness of another person without any concern for how it benefits you. Research tells us that the parts of the brain that light up during unconditional love are similar to those involved in romantic love and maternal love, and are linked to the brain's reward system. This suggests that unconditional love may be rewarding without receiving anything in return. So how important is this vital ingredient? Listen in to find out!
Ep 6Show Mercy unto the Creatures of God
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Those who are merciful will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you.” Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1924

Ep 5His Sheer Mercy
‘Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The Messenger of Allaah (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) said: ‘I know who will be the last person to be brought out of Hell and the last person to enter Paradise. It will be a man who will come out of Hell crawling. Allah will say to him, "Go and enter Paradise." So he will go there and think that it is full, so he will come back and say, "O Lord, I found it full." Allah will say to him a second time, "Go and enter Paradise." So he will go there and think that it is full, so he will come back and say, "O Lord, I found it full." Allah will say to him, "Go and enter Paradise, for there you will have something like the world and ten times more." The man will say, "Are You making fun of me (or are You laughing at me), and You are the King of all?"’ - and I saw the Messenger of Allah (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) smiling so broadly that his back teeth could be seen. He used to say, ‘That is the person who is lowest in status in Paradise.’" [Agreed upon; this version is reported by Muslim, no. 272]

Ep 4The Muslim and the Date Palm Tree
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ (peace be upon him) said, “There is a tree amongst trees, the leaves of which do not wither and that is like a Muslim; tell me what that (tree) can be?” The people began to think of the trees of the forest. Abdullah said, “I thought it could be the date palm tree, but I feel hesitant (to say it).” They (the companions) then asked, “Allah’s Messenger, (kindly) tell us which it can be?” Thereupon he ﷺ replied, “It is the date palm tree.” Abdullah made a mention of that to his father, Umar ibn Al Khattab (ra), whereupon he said to Abdullah: “Had you said that it meant the date palm tree, this statement of yours (would have been dearer to me) than such and such things.” (Source: Sahih Al-Bukhaari and Sahih Muslim)

Ep 3Integration - The Middle Ground
A sermon delivered a few days before the Independence Day of Sri Lanka touching on integration, citizenship, patriotism, and jurisprudence for minorities.

Ep 2Food for Thought
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess. (Surat Al-A’araaf 7:31) Shaddad ibn Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has prescribed excellence in everything. If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you have to slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal is spared of suffering.” (Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1955)

Ep 1Empathy a Forgotten Sunnah
Empathy is the ability to recognise, understand and share the feelings of others, almost like walking in someone else’s shoes. There are different types of empathy that have been defined by psychologists. They are cognitive, emotional and compassionate empathy. Some of the main narrations shared in the episode: Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “None of you will have faith until he loves for his brother/sister what he loves for himself.” (Source: Sahih Al-Bukhaari and Sahih Al-Muslim) Al-Nu’man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” (Source: Sahih Al-Bukhaari and Sahih Al-Muslim)
