Federal Judge Halts Trump Administrations Attempt to Scrap NYC Congestion Pricing Program
A federal judge in New York has blocked the Trump administration from canceling the citys congestion pricing program, which imposes a $9 toll on vehicles entering central Manhattan. The program, launched in January 2025, aims to reduce traffic and fund public transit repairs. The Department of Transportation had initially approved the program under President Biden, but Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy later rescinded that approval. U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman ruled that the move was arbitrary and ignored the states lawmaking process. Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA, which runs the system, welcomed the ruling, citing the programs success in reducing traffic, air pollution, and improving transit use. The Department of Transportation plans to review appeal options.
