A team of scientists in South Korea has made an extraordinary claim: they have discovered a room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor. See the Video! https://youtube.com/live/BFuW-zfH5RU Avi Loeb joined Brian Keating after he led a Galileo Project expedition to the Pacific Ocean to retrieve spherules of the first recognized interstellar meteor, IM1. These samples were brought back to Harvard College Observatory over 50 spherules in total, which lay on the deep ocean floor for nearly a decade. These sub-millimeter-sized spheres, which appear under a microscope as beautiful metallic marbles, were concentrated along the expected path of IM1 — about 85 kilometers off the coast of Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. Their discovery opens a new frontier in astronomy, where what lay outside the solar system is studied through a microscope rather than a telescope. That 83% of the matter in the universe is apparently composed of dark matter which was not found yet in the solar system should teach us modesty in forecasting the nature of interstellar objects. These results, reaching a significant level of more than 5 sigma, revealed an unexpected phenomenon: the rate of the universe's expansion seems to differ based on whether one starts from the beginning shortly after the big bang or from the present. This unexpected autonomy in the expansion challenged the traditional cosmological model, which tells the story of the universe's evolution from its inception to its current state. Riess's research has generated suspicion among many scientists, leading them to question whether the cosmological model itself needs revision. In his pursuit of unraveling the mysteries of the universe, Riess reminds us that advanced technology may often be mistaken for something magical. On this episode of INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Riess explores the challenges of measuring distances in the universe and the discrepancies between measurements of the expansion rate of the universe first observed by Edwin Hubble namesake of The Hubble Constant, a pillar of cosmology. From the use of parallax (dating back to ancient Greece) to the use of Cepheid variables and Type 1a supernovae, Riess takes listeners on a journey through the cosmic distance ladder and the problem of the variation in the measurement of the Hubble constant known as the Hubble Tension. In his book Fashion, Faith and Fantasy and the Big Questions in Modern Physics, Roger Penrose argues that fashion, faith, and fantasy, while sometimes productive and even essential in physics, may be leading today's researchers astray in three of the field's most important areas—string theory, quantum mechanics, and cosmology. * **String theory** is a branch of theoretical physics that attempts to unify all of the fundamental forces of nature in a single framework. However, string theory requires the existence of six extra hidden dimensions, which Penrose argues is not physically plausible. He also cautions that the fashionable nature of string theory can cloud our judgment of its plausibility. * **Quantum mechanics** is a fundamental theory in physics that provides a description of the physical properties of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. However, Penrose argues that quantum mechanics is based on a number of unproven assumptions, and that it may not be applicable to all physical systems. * **Cosmology** is the study of the origin, evolution, and eventual fate of the universe. Penrose argues that many of the current fantastical ideas about the origins of the universe cannot be true, but that an even wilder reality may lie behind them. Penrose concludes by arguing that fashion, faith, and fantasy should be replaced by physics: theories which, although they may be completely wrong, can at least be tested in the foreseeable future and discarded if they disagree with experiment or investigated further if not excluded by the results. The book has been praised by some physicists for its insights into the current state of physics, while others have criticized it for its negative tone and its lack of constructive proposals. At present, it is the leading candidate for the theory of the very early stages of expansion of the universe and formation of its large scale structure. They claim it "began as an icy planetesimal that was irradiated at low temperatures by cosmic rays during its interstellar journey, and experienced warming during its passage through the Solar System. This explanation is supported by a large body of experimental work." But Avi Loeb disagrees: “In a new paper published recently in Nature -- https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05687-w Acceleration of 1I/‘Oumuamua from radiolytically produced H2 in H2O ice -- Jennifer Bergner and Darryl Seligman suggest that the peculiar acceleration observed by the first known interstellar object `Oumuamua, can be explained if `Oumuamua was made of water ice which was partly dissociated into hydrogen by cosmic-rays along its interstellar journey. In the abstract of the paper, the authors admit that past models involving a pure hydrogen iceberg or a pure nitrogen iceberg do not work due to theoretical or observational inconsistencies. In fact, the hydrogen iceberg model was proposed in a previous 2020 paper by Darryl Seligman himself. Brain organoids are lab-grown minibrains that mimic structural and functional features of full-size brains. They are created by culturing pluripotent stem cells in a three-dimensional rotational bioreactor, and they develop over a course of months. Brain organoids have emerged as novel model systems that can be used to investigate human brain development and disorders34, as well as evolutionary studies and neural network research Muotri is a Professor at the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine at UC San Diego, an Associate Director of CARTA, The Center for Research and Training in Anthropology, and Director of the Stem Cell Program, and of the Archealization Center (ArchC) at UC San Diego. He moved to the Salk Institute as Pew Latin America Fellow in 2002 for postdoctoral training in the fields of neuroscience and stem cell biology. His research focuses on brain evolution and modeling neurological diseases using human-induced pluripotent stem cells and brain organoids. He has an additional focus on solving one of life's greatest mysteries: What is it that makes us uniquely human? Our unique social brains are one of the key distinguishing factors between humans and other primates. We are even very different from our closest relatives, the Neanderthals. His work has implications for the generation of human disease models by determining the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neurological complex disorders, such as autism. It is also creating opportunities for identifying and testing novel therapeutic approaches. Understanding the evolutionary path and the tradeoffs of the modern human brain will likely illuminate the origins of human disease. This video was from my last conversation with Freeman at UC San Diego in 2018. Freeman Dyson was Professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study. Mathematician, physicist, philosopher and iconoclast Freeman Dyson was one of the most influential, far-reaching and unconstrained minds of our age. His explorations -- ranging from fusion power to star-encapsulating energy collectors called 'Dyson Spheres' -- stimulated thinkers around the globe. Boldly speculating ahead trillions of years, Dyson has been called the top theologian of the 20th century. Always unabashed, he has raised controversy from all ends of the political spectrum with unusual ideas about climate change. Dyson came to Cornell University as a graduate student in 1947 and worked with Hans Bethe and Richard Feynman, producing a user-friendly way to calculate the behavior of atoms and radiation. Though he never formally received his PhD, Dyson's work was incredibly influential and diverse. He worked on fields ranging from nuclear reactors, to solid-state physics, to ferromagnetism, astrophysics, and biology, looking for situations where elegant mathematics could be usefully applied. Dyson’s books include Disturbing the Universe, Origins of Life, The Scientist as Rebel, and most recently. Dyson was a fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the Royal Society of London. In 2000, he was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. Dr. Sheehy designs particle accelerators for applications in areas such as medicine and energy. Her research projects have ranged from the design of new cancer treatment accelerators to building scaled-down particle beam experiments -- answering fundamental questions about the physics of beams beyond the reach of computer simulations. In addition to her career as an experimental scientist, She is an evangelist for physics. Her 2018 TED talk has been viewed over 1.8M times and she has been an expert TV presenter for a number of Discovery Channel shows including four seasons of Impossible Engineering.
