S4 Ep 300The Known Unknowns: Exploring the Humbling Universe | Lawrence Krauss | Part 1 (#315a)

Lawrence Krauss is an internationally known theoretical physicist, bestselling author, and acclaimed lecturer. He is currently President of The Origins Project Foundation, and host of The Origins Podcast. In this episode Professor Krauss discusses his 10th and most recent book: The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos. The book challenges readers to explore the limits of what we know, and possibly what is even knowable! Can science ever explain the mysteries of time, space, matter, the origin of life, and the nature of consciousness? Lawrence addresses these challenges head on while also celebrating how far we have come in understanding the universe. Professor Krauss reminds us tha not knowing implies a universe of opportunities with the possibility of discovery and surprise. In the episode Dr. Krauss has much to say about the risks of AI, astrobiology, the pursuit of a theory of everything, and where science can take us. He reveals his motivations for writing this latest book, and his deep concerns for the current state of academic freedom. As an accomplished scientist with over 500 publications, Lawrence Krauss has focused on the interface between elementary particle physics and cosmology, including the origin and evolution of the Universe and the fundamental structure of matter. Among his numerous important scientific contributions was the proposal, in 1995, that most of the energy of the Universe resided in empty space. Krauss previously served as Director of Arizona State University's Origins Project, and Foundation Professor for a decade from 2008-2018, and also as Chair of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists from 2006-2018. During his career Prof. Krauss has held endowed professorships and distinguished research appointments at institutions including Harvard University, Yale University, University of Chicago, Boston University, University of Zurich, University of California at Santa Barbara, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN), Case Western Reserve University, Australian National University, Arizona State University, and New College of Humanities. He has written 10 popular books, including the international best-sellers, The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. https://originsproject.org/ https://www.lawrencemkrauss.com/ https://twitter.com/LKrauss The Edge of Knowledge: Unsolved Mysteries of the Cosmos: https://t.co/BD18qnTxtq The Cosmological Constant Paper by Dr. Krauss: https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9504003 Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Please leave a rating and review: On Apple devices, click here, https://apple.co/39UaHlB On Spotify it’s here: https://spoti.fi/3vpfXok On Audible it’s here https://tinyurl.com/wtpvej9v Find other ways to rate here: https://briankeating.com/podcast Support the podcast on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/drbriankeating or become a Member on YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/join To advertise with us, contact [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. S4 Ep 299Brian Keating on the Jordan Harbinger Show (#314)

Brian Keating (@DrBrianKeating) is a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of California San Diego, host of the Into the Impossible podcast, and the author of Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science's Highest Honor. What Jordan Harbinger discusses with Brian Keating: What compelled dynamite inventor Alfred Nobel to annually reward outstanding contributions for humanity, and how would he feel about the way Nobel prizes are awarded today? What is an ethical will, and why should you make sure you have one in place sooner rather than later? How accolades like the Nobel prize and the Academy Awards have taken on outsized importance in their respective fields in spite of being selected arbitrarily by an anointed few - with sometimes deadly consequences. How Brian turned around surface losses like getting fired from an academic dream job and missing his shot at the Nobel prize from disasters into catalysts of great happiness. How you can have a chance at winning a fragment of the 4.3-billion-year-old supernova that created Earth and the hemoglobin in your blood! And much more... His main focus has been on particle dark matter, inflation the cosmic microwave background, and cosmic acceleration. His 1999 paper, A Polarization Pursuer’s Guide inspired Professor Keating to create the BICEP experiment. He is the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Physics at Johns Hopkins University. 00:00:00 intro 00:04:39 The BICEP 2 Press Conference St. Patrick’s Day 2014 and how Professor Kamionkowski inspired the BICEP collaboration and the story of the well known cosmology paper: A Polarization Pursuers' Guide, 1999 ( https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/9909281 ), the inspiration for BICEP. 00:06:58 Did you realized the implications of your paper for telescope design at the time? Marks’s proposition to measure the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves, even with a small aperture telescope. The origins of BICEP and the Simons Observatory. 00:15:40 Optical surveys are still a cornerstone of observational cosmology like weak gravitational lensing and comparisons to E/ B mode curl components measurements. 00:28:50 Is a theory of everything possible? Are physicists “lost in math”? What to you think make good mathematical models? Little attention has been given to alternatives to symmetries in string / super-symmetry theories which have not been productive? Behold the examples of Bohr and Balmer’s formula and the breakthroughs of the 20th century. The luck of 20th Century Physics. The price tags and time scales are much bigger now. Don’t abandon the notion of symmetry! 00:34:53 The cosmological principle; should it go away? What would you do if it did? All models are approximations. We have good descriptions. 00:41:00 The social contagion of Eric Lerner and the controversy over the refutation of the Big Bang Theory. https://iai.tv/articles/the-big-bang-didnt-happen-auid-2215 Does it make you re-evaluate the standard model of the Universe? 00:45:5l0 About the Hubble Tension. S4 Ep 295“I only had 30 minutes to Invent Eternal Inflation!” Andrei Linde | INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast (#310)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/Qq2OgL8Hb6o?=sub_confirmation=1 Andrei Linde is one of the main authors of inflationary cosmology. At present, it is the leading candidate for the theory of the very early stages of expansion of the universe and formation of its large scale structure. In this podcast Linde will describe some of the popular versions of this theory, as well as observational evidence it favor of inflationary cosmology. We also discuss Andrei’s career, the big problems in cosmology, and how Andrei invented eternal chaotic inflation which can lead to a universe which is constantly inflating, where new universes are constantly being created. Eternal inflation is a theory that states that the universe is constantly inflating, and that new universes are constantly being created. Here's his 1986 paper about it ETERNAL CHAOTIC INFLATION http://cds.cern.ch/record/167897/files/CM-P00066672.pdf Professor Linde’s seminal book PARTICLE PHYSICS AND INFLATIONARY COSMOLOGY is available in PDF format: https://arxiv.org/pdf/hep-th/0503203.pdf Here are some past episodes that complement this one: Anna Ijjas: Bouncing cosmology https://youtu.be/aGlLjq4OcmE Will Kinney: An Infinity of Worlds https://youtu.be/iDsqy9QVGoI Neil Turok Endless Universes: https://youtu.be/Dt5cFLN65fI Note there are a number of alternative theories to cosmic inflation. Some of the most popular alternatives include: The ekpyrotic universe: This theory suggests that the universe began in a state of contraction, rather than expansion. The contraction would have eventually led to a singularity, at which point the universe would have bounced back into expansion. The cyclic universe: This theory is similar to the ekpyrotic universe, but it suggests that the universe goes through a series of cycles of contraction and expansion. The varying-speed-of-light universe: This theory suggests that the speed of light was not constant in the early universe. If this is true, it could explain how the universe could have expanded rapidly without violating the laws of physics. The string gas universe: This theory suggests that the early universe was filled with a gas of strings. The strings would have interacted with each other, causing the universe to expand rapidly. S4 Ep 294Superconductor Smackdown: Breakthrough or ‘Probable Fraud’? (#309)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/hbER0AnwXD4?subconfirmation=1 Here come maglev trains, fusion reactors, cheap MRI scanners in every clinic…. Or not? Since the discovery of superconductors in 1911 by Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, earning the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physics, they have been the subject of much fascination and inquiry. Some of the greatest minds in physics have grappled with how superconductivity works to drive electrical resistance to 0. The 1972 Nobel prize in Physics was awarded to John Bardeen, Leon Neil Cooper, and John Robert Schrieffer "for their BCS theory of superconductivity. Now the race is on to get the highest temperature superconductor possible; another Nobel Prize was awarded just for getting the temperature up to 35K or -396 Fahrenheit! So superconducting has remained impractical, until now... Maybe! The HUGE claim: zero resistance, at temperatures up to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. S4 Ep 292Avi Loeb: `Oumuamua is EXTRATERRESTRIAL (#307)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtube.com/live/86E03OzQDCo?sub_confirmation=1 Recently, Bergner and Seligman explained the behavior of the first interstellar object, ‘Oumuamua, as a rare form of a quite common object, a comet. They claim it "began as an icy planetesimal that was irradiated at low temperatures by cosmic rays during its interstellar journey, and experienced warming during its passage through the Solar System. This explanation is supported by a large body of experimental work." But Avi Loeb disagrees: “In a new paper published recently in Nature -- https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05687-w Acceleration of 1I/‘Oumuamua from radiolytically produced H2 in H2O ice -- Jennifer Bergner and Darryl Seligman suggest that the peculiar acceleration observed by the first known interstellar object `Oumuamua, can be explained if `Oumuamua was made of water ice which was partly dissociated into hydrogen by cosmic-rays along its interstellar journey. In the abstract of the paper, the authors admit that past models involving a pure hydrogen iceberg or a pure nitrogen iceberg do not work due to theoretical or observational inconsistencies. In fact, the hydrogen iceberg model was proposed in a previous 2020 paper by Darryl Seligman himself. A few months later, Avi wrote a paper with Thiem Hoang, showing that heating by interstellar starlight would destroy hydrogen icebergs too quickly and not allow them to reach the solar system from their likely formation sites of giant molecular clouds. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05687-w Read Hoang and Loeb's response paper: https://lweb.cfa.harvard.edu/~loeb/Hoang_Loeb_23.pdf Essay: https://avi-loeb.medium.com/oumuamua-was-not-a-hydrogen-water-iceberg-1dd2f7a6107f https://arxiv.org/pdf/2208.00092.pdf https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/mar/24/harvard-physicist-pacific-expedition-first-interstellar-meteor Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Please leave a rating and review: On Apple devices, click here, https://apple.co/39UaHlB On Spotify it’s here: https://spoti.fi/3vpfXok On Audible it’s here https://tinyurl.com/wtpvej9v Find other ways to rate here: https://briankeating.com/podcast Support the podcast on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/drbriankeating or become a Member on YouTube- https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmXH_moPhfkqCk6S3b9RWuw/join To advertise with us, contact [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. S4 Ep 290Studying Autism with BRAINS Grown In Space | Alysson Moutri on The INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast (#304)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Be sure to watch the video of this episode on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/hDKGF5W4Qis?sub_confirmation=1 Where does consciousness come from? Can we cure autism? Can we grow a human BRAIN in Space? Dr. Alysson Muotri joins me to discuss all these fascinating questions and more. Brain organoids are lab-grown minibrains that mimic structural and functional features of full-size brains. They are created by culturing pluripotent stem cells in a three-dimensional rotational bioreactor, and they develop over a course of months. Brain organoids have emerged as novel model systems that can be used to investigate human brain development and disorders34, as well as evolutionary studies and neural network research Muotri is a Professor at the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine at UC San Diego, an Associate Director of CARTA, The Center for Research and Training in Anthropology, and Director of the Stem Cell Program, and of the Archealization Center (ArchC) at UC San Diego. He moved to the Salk Institute as Pew Latin America Fellow in 2002 for postdoctoral training in the fields of neuroscience and stem cell biology. His research focuses on brain evolution and modeling neurological diseases using human-induced pluripotent stem cells and brain organoids. He has an additional focus on solving one of life's greatest mysteries: What is it that makes us uniquely human? Our unique social brains are one of the key distinguishing factors between humans and other primates. We are even very different from our closest relatives, the Neanderthals. His work has implications for the generation of human disease models by determining the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neurological complex disorders, such as autism. It is also creating opportunities for identifying and testing novel therapeutic approaches. Understanding the evolutionary path and the tradeoffs of the modern human brain will likely illuminate the origins of human disease. Dr. Moutri has received several awards, including the prestigious NIH Director’s New Innovator Award, NARSAD, Emerald Foundation Young Investigator Award, Surugadai Award, Rock Star of Innovation, NIH EUREKA Award, and two Telly Awards for Excellence in Science Communication. Professor Aprile appears in the documentary CHASING EINSTEIN about the search for dark matter. https://chasingeinsteinfilm.com/ www.xenon1t.org Could Einstein have been wrong about the true nature of gravity? Does his general theory of relativity and the Standard Model need an update? Unprecedented advances in experimental particle physics, astronomy and cosmology are uncovering mysteries of cosmic consequence. Among the most challenging is the realization that 80% of the universe consists of something unknown that exerts galactic forces pulling the universe apart. The search for Dark Matter extends from the world's most powerful particle accelerators to the most sensitive telescopes, to deep under the earth. Nobel worthy discoveries await. Scientists at UC San Diego are at the epicenter of the search for Dark Matter leading efforts to build the next generation of instruments and experiments to uncover its secrets. S4 Ep 287Freeman Dyson (#301)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible For that last four years of his life, Freeman Dyson would spend winters in La Jolla, and work alongside physicists at UC San Diego (as well as the super-secret scientific advisory group known as the JASONS). This video was from my last conversation with Freeman at UC San Diego in 2018. Freeman Dyson was Professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study. Mathematician, physicist, philosopher and iconoclast Freeman Dyson was one of the most influential, far-reaching and unconstrained minds of our age. His explorations -- ranging from fusion power to star-encapsulating energy collectors called 'Dyson Spheres' -- stimulated thinkers around the globe. Boldly speculating ahead trillions of years, Dyson has been called the top theologian of the 20th century. Always unabashed, he has raised controversy from all ends of the political spectrum with unusual ideas about climate change. Dyson came to Cornell University as a graduate student in 1947 and worked with Hans Bethe and Richard Feynman, producing a user-friendly way to calculate the behavior of atoms and radiation. Though he never formally received his PhD, Dyson's work was incredibly influential and diverse. He worked on fields ranging from nuclear reactors, to solid-state physics, to ferromagnetism, astrophysics, and biology, looking for situations where elegant mathematics could be usefully applied. Dyson’s books include Disturbing the Universe, Origins of Life, The Scientist as Rebel, and most recently. Dyson was a fellow of the American Physical Society, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a fellow of the Royal Society of London. In 2000, he was awarded the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion. Topics include Freeman's final book, Maker of Patterns: A Life in Letters:: https://amzn.to/3auNIbG , science and religion, and the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). In 2019 Freeman and Greg Benford (UCSD PhD 1967) had a conversation, moderated by me and hosted at UCSD about the deep future of humanity. Find that video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riPDQ3VJBCI Lastly, please see here for a nice retrospective on Freeman by San Diego Union-Tribune reporter, Gary Robbins: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/science/story/2020-02-28/remembering-famed-physicist-freeman-dyson-and-his-la-jolla-years Connect with Professor Keating: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Please leave a rating and review of my Podcast: scroll down to the ratings and leave a 5 star rating and review The INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast. S4 Ep 286What’s the Matter of Everything? Particle Physicist Suzie Sheehy on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast (#300)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible A vivid account of experiments that changed the course of history, leading to some of the most significant breakthroughs in science. From the serendipitous discovery of X-rays in a German laboratory to the scientists trying to prove Einstein wrong (and inadvertently proving him right) to the race to split open the atom, these brilliant experiments fundamentally changed our lives. Discoveries that have helped us detect the flow of lava deep inside volcanoes, develop life-saving medical techniques like diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy, and create radio, TV, microwaves, smartphones—even the World Wide Web itself. Suzanne Sheehy is an Australian accelerator physicist and is currently a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, where she also teaches graduate-level accelerator physics, and an Associate Professor in Medical Accelerator Physics at The University of Melbourne. Dr. Sheehy designs particle accelerators for applications in areas such as medicine and energy. Her research projects have ranged from the design of new cancer treatment accelerators to building scaled-down particle beam experiments -- answering fundamental questions about the physics of beams beyond the reach of computer simulations. In addition to her career as an experimental scientist, She is an evangelist for physics. Her 2018 TED talk has been viewed over 1.8M times and she has been an expert TV presenter for a number of Discovery Channel shows including four seasons of Impossible Engineering. S4 Ep 281Aliens are Out There! Lisa Kaltenegger (#294)

Please support the podcast by taking our short listener survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/intotheimpossible Lisa Kaltenegger is the founding director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell. In 2009, Kaltenegger realized that a telescope like JWST would see only tiny signals from atmospheric gases during each transit, so in order to achieve any statistical certainty, astronomers would need to observe dozens or even hundreds of transits, which would take years. Acting on this insight, astronomers started to seek Earths in close orbits around dimmer, colder red dwarf stars, where atmospheric signals will be less drowned out by starlight and transits repeat more frequently. In 2017, astronomers announced the discovery of seven rocky planets around a red dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. Then in September, the SPECULOOS-2 system emerged as a backup. These stars are close. They’re dim and red. They each have multiple rocky planets that transit. And as of the summer, the JWST is up and running even better than expected. It will spend a sizable fraction of the next five years staring hard at these messy globes of rock and chemicals spinning around their strange stars. For theoreticians like Kaltenegger who went from daydreaming of alternate Earths to churning out predictions about their atmospheric chemistry, decades of anticipation have given way to a slow fade-in of squiggly spectra on computer monitors. The goal at the time was to compare spectra from rocky, temperate planets to what Earth’s spectrum would look like from far away, seeking conspicuous signals like a surplus of oxygen due to widespread photosynthesis. Kaltenegger’s objection was that, for the first 2 billion years of Earth’s existence, its atmosphere had no oxygen. Then it took another billion years for oxygen to build up to high levels. And this biosignature hit its highest concentration not in Earth’s present-day spectrum, but during a short window in the late Cretaceous Period when proto-birds chased giant insects through the skies. Without a good theoretical model for how Earth’s own spectrum has changed, Kaltenegger feared, the big planet-finding missions could easily miss a living world that didn’t match a narrow temporal template. She needed to envision Earth as an exoplanet evolving through time. To do this, she adapted one of the first global climate models, developed by the geoscientist James Kasting, which still includes references to the 1970s magnetic-tape era it originated in. Kaltenegger developed this code into a bespoke tool that can analyze not only Earth through time but also radically alien scenarios, and it remains her lab’s workhorse. #einstein #relativity #gravity In 1911, a relatively unknown physicist named Albert Einstein published his preliminary theory of gravity. But it hadn't been tested. To do that, he needed a photograph of starlight as it passed the sun during a total solar eclipse. So began a nearly decade-long quest by seven determined astronomers from observatories in four countries, who traveled the world during five eclipses to capture the elusive sight. Over the years, they faced thunderstorms, the ravages of a world war, lost equipment, and local superstitions. Finally, in May of 1919, British expeditions to northern Brazil and the island of Príncipe managed to photograph the stars, confirming Einstein's theory. Sylvester James (Jim) Gates Jr. is an American theoretical physicist. He currently holds the Clark Leadership Chair in Science with the physics department at the University of Maryland College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. He is also affiliated with the University Maryland's School of Public Policy. He served on former President Barack Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. An excerpt from his book, Proving Einstein Right: The Daring Expeditions that Changed How We Look at the Universe- At its heart, this is a story of frustration, faith, and ultimate victory--and of the scientists whose efforts helped build the framework for the big bang theory, catapulted Einstein to international fame, and shook the foundation of physics. S4 Ep 279Do We Live in a Mirror Universe? Oliver Philcox (#292)

Also available as a video on Youtube: https://youtu.be/y0_ePN7c1gw What is parity and how can it be violated? A striking asymmetry in the arrangements of galaxies in the sky has been announced. If confirmed, the finding would point to features of the unknown fundamental laws that operated during the Big Bang. “If this result is real, someone’s going to get a Nobel Prize,” said Marc Kamionkowski, a physicist at Johns Hopkins University who was not involved in the analysis. Brian Keating and Oliver Philcox discuss the large scale structure of the universe and how enigmatic space tetrahedrons, drawn between galaxies, may map out some key features of the most poorly-understood phases of early big bang cosmology. Oliver Philcox is a theoretical physicist interested in statistical cosmology. He obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy before spending a year in Harvard’s Center for Astrophysics. He is a Junior Fellow in the Simons Society of Fellows, hosted at Columbia University. S4 Ep 278This Book Sent Galileo To JAIL! (#291)

The Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo) is a 1632 Italian-language book by Galileo Galilei comparing the Copernican system with the traditional Ptolemaic system. It was translated into Latin as Systema cosmicum (English: Cosmic System) in 1635 by Matthias Bernegger. The book was dedicated to Galileo's patron, Ferdinando II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, who received the first printed copy on February 22, 1632. Download your copy of Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems in auidiobook form here https://BrianKeating.com/dialogue Background In the Copernican system, the Earth and other planets orbit the Sun, while in the Ptolemaic system, everything in the Universe circles around the Earth. The Dialogue was published in Florence under a formal license from the Inquisition. In 1633, Galileo was found to be "vehemently suspect of heresy" based on the book, which was then placed on the Index of Forbidden Books, from which it was not removed until 1835 (after the theories it discussed had been permitted in print in 1822). In an action that was not announced at the time, the publication of anything else he had written or ever might write was also banned in Catholic countries. Overview While writing the book, Galileo referred to it as his Dialogue on the Tides, and when the manuscript went to the Inquisition for approval, the title was Dialogue on the Ebb and Flow of the Sea. He was ordered to remove all mention of tides from the title and to change the preface because granting approval to such a title would look like approval of his theory of the tides using the motion of the Earth as proof. As a result, the formal title on the title page is Dialogue, which is followed by Galileo's name, academic posts, and followed by a long subtitle. The name by which the work is now known was extracted by the printer from the description on the title page when permission was given to reprint it with an approved preface by a Catholic theologian in 1744. This must be kept in mind when discussing Galileo's motives for writing the book. Although the book is presented formally as a consideration of both systems (as it needed to be in order to be published at all), there is no question that the Copernican side gets the better of the argument. Structure The book is presented as a series of discussions, over a span of four days, among two philosophers and a layman: Salviati argues for the Copernican position and presents some of Galileo's views directly, calling him the "Academician" in honor of Galileo's membership in the Accademia dei Lincei. He is named after Galileo's friend Filippo Salviati (1582–1614). Sagredo is an intelligent layman who is initially neutral. He is named after Galileo's friend Giovanni Francesco Sagredo (1571–1620). Simplicio, a dedicated follower of Ptolemy and Aristotle, presents the traditional views and the arguments against the Copernican position. He is supposedly named after Simplicius of Cilicia, a sixth-century commentator on Aristotle, but it was suspected the name was a double entendre, as the Italian for "simple" (as in "simple minded") is "semplice".Simplicio is modeled on two contemporary conservative philosophers, Lodovico delle Colombe (1565–1616?), Galileo's opponent, and Cesare Cremonini (1550–1631), a Paduan colleague who had refused to look through the telescope. Colombe was the leader of a group of Florentine opponents of Galileo's, which some of the latter's friends referred to as "the pigeon league". S4 Ep 277Is There A MIND Behind the Big Bang? Luke Barnes on Brian Keating’s INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE Podcast (#290)

See the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/bRCLzMS8Rck Is there evidence for God in the origin of Universe? What were Aristolte’s contributions to science? How does a scientist come from a Young Earth Creationist background. Luke Barnes co-authored with Geraint Lewis, of A Fortunate Universe: Life in a Finely Tuned Cosmos published by Cambridge University Press. The book explores the last forty years of scientific evidence that if the Universe had been forged with even slightly different properties, life as we know it - and life as we can imagine it - would be impossible. This has profound implications about how we understand the Universe, from its most basic particles and forces, to planets, stars and galaxies, and back through cosmic history to the birth of the cosmos. Conflicting notions about our place in the Universe are defined, defended and critiqued from scientific, philosophical and religious viewpoints. The authors' engaging and witty style addresses what fine-tuning might mean for the future of physics and the search for the ultimate laws of nature. Luke A. Barnes is a Lecturer in astronomy and cosmology at Western Sydney University. He earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge, he has published papers in the field of galaxy formation and on the fine-tuning of the Universe for life. He is the author, with Geraint Lewis, of "A Fortunate Universe: Life in a Finely Tuned Cosmos" and "The Cosmic Revolutionary's Handbook: (Or: How to Beat the Big Bang)". He is a John Templeton Fellow. He has published papers in the fields of galaxy formation and the fine-tuning of the Universe for life. He has also published papers on the philosophy of science, and regularly engages in public outreach through public speaking, articles in the popular press, and social media. He has modeled galaxy formation in a cosmological context with supercomputer simulations, and connected those simulations to observations with modeling of radiative transfer (particularly Lyman alpha emission and absorption) and realistic models of IFU observations. twitter.com/lukebarnesastro 00:01:57 What is Luke’s reaction to the Eric Lerner claim that the JWST proves the big bang never happened? 00:03:35 About the book “A Fortunate Universe” and what is “Fine Tuning” of the Universe? 00:06:11 Is the fine-tuning of the universe required for life? 00:08:00 How can we overcome an anthropic bias to the fine-tuning argument ? 00:13:30 What are some of the most salient principles or physical constants that, if different, would “break” the universe and prevent life from happening? 00:19:05 Is there a convincing argument for a teleological, intelligent creator? 00:24:30 Back to basics, what is this "science thing" anyway? S4 Ep 276SETI and Beyond: A discussion with Brian Keating, Paul Davies, Jim Benford and Mat Kaplan - Replay (#289)

This brain trust of SETI experts was hosted in February of 2020, back when live, in-studio conversations happened, and discussions of alien artifacts and UAPs was fringe science. The discussion includes James Benford's strategy for finding ETI artifacts and a proposition for both passive and active observations by optical and radio listening, radar imaging and launching probes. A debate on the implications of our own technosignatures. And what if we find nothing? A profound result: suggesting that, perhaps, no ET intelligence has yet come to look at Earth, or perhaps other civilizations are simply not as curious as we, good at concealing their activities, or simply lost to deep time. Many of the topics covered have now become mainstream science! The Director of National Intelligence has just released the second Annual Report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. NASA has commissioned an independent study on unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAPs) led by Professor Keating’s friend and colleague, Former chair of Princeton’s astrophysics department, and President of the Simons Foundation, David Spergel. https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-to-set-up-independent-study-on-unidentified-anomalous-phenomena/ And of course, our friend, Harvard Astronomy Professor Avi Loeb's Galileo Project for the Systematic Scientific Search for Evidence of Extraterrestrial Technological Artifacts ( https://projects.iq.harvard.edu/galileo/home ). His interests include electromagnetic power beaming for space propulsion, and experimental intense particle beams. He has a PhD in Physics in plasma physics (UCSD 1969). He co-edited Starship Century, dealing with the prospect of star travel, an anthology of fact & fiction. See jamesbenford.com. Paul Davies is Director of the Beyond Center for Fundamental Concepts in Science at Arizona State University. His research spans cosmology, astrobiology and theoretical physics. He has made important contributions to quantum field theory in curved spacetime, with applications to inflationary cosmology and black holes. He was among the first to champion the possibility that microbial life could be transferred between Mars and Earth in impact ejecta. He is the author of 28 books, including most recently The Eerie Silence: Renewing Our Search for Alien Intelligence. Mat Kaplan was the host of Planetary Radio from the Planetary Society from its' 2002 premiere through 2022. He was a Planetary Society staff member for more than 15 years, He hosts live events for Southern California Public Radio called NEXT, and frequently serves as moderator or speaker at space and science gatherings. S4 Ep 271Does Dark Matter Exist? Stacy McGaugh (#284)

Stacy McGaugh is an American astronomer and professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. His primary focus has been in physics problems related to the distribution of matter and the dynamics of galaxies. He's a proponent of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), which tweaks our understanding of gravity to allow galaxies to form and move without the need of a traditional dark matter halo. The theory was originally published in 1983 by Israeli physicist Mordehai Milgrom. MOND has been effective at predicting the behavior of some galaxies, like the Dwarf Spheroidals attached to Andromeda, however it has yet to explain some anomalies like the collision of the Bullet Cluster. In cases with high gravitational lensing and little ordinary matter the theory has been shown to break down. Stacy discusses successes of his approach to astrophysics and what can be improved on in the future. https://twitter.com/DudeDarkmatter http://astroweb.case.edu/ssm/ Connect with Professor Keating: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Can you do me a favor? S4 Ep 270Laser Fusion: Is it Hype? Professor Charles Seife (#283)

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and DOE’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) recently announced the achievement of fusion ignition at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) — a major scientific breakthrough decades in the making that will pave the way for advancements in national defense and the future of clean power. On Dec. 5, a team at LLNL’s National Ignition Facility (NIF) conducted the first controlled fusion experiment in history to reach this milestone, also known as scientific energy breakeven, meaning it produced more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to drive it. This first-of-its-kind feat will provide unprecedented capability to support NNSA’s Stockpile Stewardship Program and will provide invaluable insights into the prospects of clean fusion energy, which would be a game-changer for efforts to achieve President Biden’s goal of a net-zero carbon economy. “This is a landmark achievement for the researchers and staff at the National Ignition Facility who have dedicated their careers to seeing fusion ignition become a reality, and this milestone will undoubtedly spark even more discovery,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. https://lasers.llnl.gov/ Charles Seife, a professor of journalism at NYU's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, has been writing about physics and mathematics for two decades. He is a critic of the hype surrounding fusion. He is the author of nine books books, SUN IN A BOTTLE AND including Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea (2000), which won the 2000 PEN/Martha Albrand Award for First Nonfiction; Proofiness: The Dark Arts of Mathematical Deception (2010); and a forthcoming biography of physicist Stephen Hawking (2021). Before arriving at NYU, Seife was a writer for Science magazine and had been a U.S. correspondent for New Scientist. His writing has also appeared in The Economist, Scientific American, ProPublica, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Discover, Slate, Smithsonian, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and numerous other publications. S4 Ep 268Love & Math: Edward Frenkel (#281)

Edward Frenkel’s latest book Love and Math, a New York Times bestseller, was named one of the Best Books of the year by both Amazon and iBooks, and won the Euler Book Prize from the Mathematical Association of America. The book reveals a side of math seldom seen, suffused with all the beauty and elegance of a work of art. Mathematics, he writes, directs the flow of the universe, lurks behind its shapes and curves, holds the reins of everything from tiny atoms to the biggest stars. Love and Math is also about accessing a new way of thinking, which empowers us to better understand the world and our place in it. It is an invitation to discover the hidden magic universe of mathematics. Edward Frenkel is Russian born and overcame a discriminatory educational system to become one of the twenty-first century’s leading mathematicians. He is a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, which he joined in 1997 after being on the faculty at Harvard University. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, and the winner of the Hermann Weyl Prize in mathematical physics. Frenkel has authored 3 books and over 90 scholarly articles in academic journals and is an electronic music aficionado. Frenkel’s research is on the interface of mathematics and quantum physics, with an emphasis on the Langlands Program, which he describes as a Grand Unified Theory of mathematics. twitter.com/edfrenkel www.edwardfrenkel.com www.youtube.com/@edfrenkel Connect with Professor Keating: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! https://www.jordanharbinger.com/podcasts Can you do me a favor? S4 Ep 267Replay - Who Was James Webb? An honest conversation with Hakeem Oluseyi (#280)

This is a replay of the discussion with Hakeem Oluseyi on the controversy surrounding the naming of the James Webb Space Telescope. It continues! Today the New York Time published an opinion piece entitled: How Naming the James Webb Telescope Turned Into a Fight Over Homophobia: Did the former head of NASA discriminate against gay people? One physicist tried to rebut the accusation, only to find himself the target of attacks. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/19/us/james-webb-telescope-gay-rights.html? The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is NASA’s next great flagship observatory. It’s set to continue — and extend — the illustrious scientific tradition established by the Hubble Space Telescope, while peering deeper into the universe and observing what Hubble could not. But who was James Webb? Considering the controversy surrounding his legacy, I wanted to explore the allegations against him with my friend Hakeem Oluseyi and answer the question: Why was the James Webb Space Telescope named after him? Hakeem claims that some allegations wrongly accused an innocent man who was, among more well-known achievements, a hero of diversity and inclusion in American government. He worked with Lyndon Johnson and John F. Kennedy to use NASA facilities in America’s southern states to promote racial integration and equal opportunity in employment Hakeem Oluseyi is an American astrophysicist, cosmologist, inventor, educator, science communicator, author, actor, veteran, and humanitarian. Oluseyi was named a Visiting Robinson Professor at George Mason University in 2021, a distinction by which the university recognizes outstanding faculty. In 2021, he published an autobiography titled: A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars co-authored with Joshua Horwitz. His memoir tells the inspiring unlikely hero’s journey story from dealing drugs to dishing out the hardest of hardcore science communication and inspiration! Hakeem’s best known scientific contributions are research on the transfer of mass and energy through the Sun’s atmosphere; the development of space-borne observatories for studying astrophysical plasmas and dark energy; and the development of transformative technologies in ultraviolet optics, detectors, computer chips, and ion propulsion. S4 Ep 264Francis Halzen: Catching Neutrinos at the South Pole (#276)

Francis Halzen is the Hilldale and Gregory Breit Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University Wisconsin-Madison and principal investigator for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, the world's largest neutrino detector, he is the Director of the Institute for Elementary Particle Physics, and the Hilldale and Gregory Breit Distinguished Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A theoretician studying problems at the interface of particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology, Halzen has been working since 1987 on the AMANDA experiment, a first-generation neutrino telescope at the South Pole. AMANDA observations represent a proof of concept for IceCube. After six years of construction, IceCube became operational in 2010. IceCube searches for neutrinos from the most violent astrophysical sources: events like exploding stars, gamma ray bursts, and cataclysmic phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars. The IceCube telescope is a powerful tool to search for dark matter, and could reveal the new physical processes associated with the enigmatic origin of the highest energy particles in nature. The most important result from the IceCube was the clear break-through observation of high-energy neutrinos (about 100 times more energetic than the particles accelerated today in the world’s most powerful machine, the LHC at CERN) in 2013, from as yet not identified sources outside the Galaxy. This discovery has stimulated the planning and development of even larger neutrino telescopes, both at the South Pole and deep under the ocean. https://user-web.icecube.wisc.edu/ Connect with me: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! S4 Ep 261Niall Ferguson: DOOM! (#273)

Niall Ferguson’s most recent book is Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe. In this book he posits that disasters are inherently hard to predict. Pandemics, like earthquakes, wildfires, and financial crises. and wars, are not normally distributed; there is no cycle of history to help us anticipate the next catastrophe. But when disaster strikes, we ought to be better prepared than the Romans were when Vesuvius erupted, or medieval Italians when the Black Death struck. Yet in 2020 the responses of many developed countries, including the United States, to a new virus from China were badly bungled. Why? While populist leaders certainly performed poorly in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Ferguson argues that more profound pathologies were at work. Drawing from multiple disciplines, including economics, cliodynamics, and network science, Doom offers not just a history but a general theory of disasters, showing why our ever more bureaucratic and complex systems are getting worse at handling them. Niall Ferguson, MA, D.Phil., is the Milbank Family Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University, and a senior faculty fellow of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard, where he served for twelve years as the Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History. He is the author of sixteen books. In 2003, Ferguson wrote and presented a six-part history of the British Empire for Channel 4, the UK broadcaster. The accompanying book, Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power, was a bestseller in both Britain and the United States. The sequel, Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire, was published in 2004 by Penguin, and prompted Time magazine to name him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. The international bestseller, The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, published in 2008 was adapted into a PBS series, winning the International Emmy award for Best Documentary, as well as the Handelszeitung Economics Book Prize. In 2011 he published Civilization: The West and the Rest, also a Channel 4/PBS documentary series. A year later came the three-part television series “China: Triumph and Turmoil.” The book based on his 2012 BBC Reith lectures, The Great Degeneration: How Institutions Decay and Economies Die, was a New York Times bestseller within a week of its publication. Ferguson has been a contributing editor for Bloomberg Television and a columnist for Newsweek. He began writing a twice-a-month column for Bloomberg Opinion in June 2020. www.niallferguson.com twitter.com/nfergus Connect with me: 🏄‍♂️ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrBrianKeating 📸 Instagram: https://instagram.com/DrBrianKeating 🔔 Subscribe https://www.youtube.com/DrBrianKeating?sub_confirmation=1 📝 Join my mailing list; just click here http://briankeating.com/list ✍️ Detailed Blog posts here: https://briankeating.com/blog.php 🎙️ Listen on audio-only platforms: https://briankeating.com/podcast Subscribe to the Jordan Harbinger Show for amazing content from Apple’s best podcast of 2018! S4 Ep 259Can Science Save Us? Astronomer Royal, Martin Rees (#271)

In his most recent book If Science is to Save Us, Astronomer Royal Martin Rees argues that, in his expert and personal analysis of the scientific endeavor on which we all depend, that we need to think globally, we need to think rationally and we need to think long-term, empowered by twenty-first-century technology but guided by values that science alone cannot provide. In this timely work, Lord Rees details how there has never been a time when ‘following the science’ has been more important for humanity. He warns that our world is so interconnected that a collapse - societal or ecological - would be a truly global catastrophe. So it’s ever more crucial to ensure that science is deployed optimally, and that brakes are applied to applications that are dangerous or unethical. At no other point in history have we had such advanced knowledge and technology at our fingertips, nor had such astonishing capacity to determine the future of our planet. Therefore, decisions we must make on how science is applied belong outside the lab and should be the outcome of wide public debate. For that to happen, science needs to become part of our common culture. Science is not just for scientists: if it were, it could never save us from the multiple crises we face. For science can save us, if its innovations mesh carefully into society and its applications are channelled for the common good. Martin Rees is the UK's Astronomer Royal. He is based at Cambridge University where he is a Fellow (and Former Master) of Trinity College. He is a member of the House of Lords, and a former President of the Royal Society. His research interests include space exploration, black holes, galaxy formation, the multiverse and prospects for extraterrestrial life. He is co-founder of the Centre for the Study of Existential Risks at Cambridge University (CSER). In addition to academic publications, research papers he has written many general articles and ten books, most recently 'On the Future: Prospects for Humanity'. S4 Ep 255Chaos, Covid, & Climate Change with Professor Tim Palmer (#267)

In his acclaimed latest book, The Primacy of Doubt: From Quantum Physics to Climate Change, How the Science of Uncertainty Can Help Us Understand Our Chaotic World, Professor Timothy Palmer argues that embracing the mathematics of uncertainty is vital to understanding ourselves and the universe around us. Whether we want to predict climate change or market crashes, understand how the brain is able to outpace supercomputers or find a theory that links quantum and cosmological physics, Palmer shows how his vision of mathematical uncertainty provides new insights into some of the deepest problems in science. The result is a revolution—one that shows that power begins by embracing what we don’t know. The Primacy of Doubt on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Primacy-Doubt-Quantum-Uncertainty-Understand/dp/1541619714 Timothy Palmer is the Royal Society Research Professor in Climate Physics, and a Senior Fellow at the Oxford Martin Institute at the University of Oxford. He is a mathematical physicist who has spent most of his career working on the dynamics and predictability of weather and climate. He pioneered the development of probabilistic ensemble forecasting techniques for weather and climate prediction, techniques that are now standard in weather and climate forecasting around the world. In 2021 Professor Palmer was awarded an honorary fellowship of the Institute of Physics. Professor Palmer was involved in the first five IPCC assessment reports, and was co-chair of the international scientific steering group of the World Climate Research Programme project (CLIVAR) on climate variability and predictability.
