S6 Ep 10219: To Give or Not to Give: The Post-Exit Feedback Dilemma
Leaving a job can be messy. Sometimes it’s straightforward…and sometimes it comes with a nagging voice in the back of your head asking: should I finally speak my mind?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma dive into the complicated world of post-exit feedback. We unpack a listener dilemma from Judy, who left a toxic workplace and is now being asked by HR to share her experience as part of an internal investigation. We break down the real risks, especially in small industries, like where your feedback might end up, who might hear it, and whether anything will actually change. We also discuss how to approach the conversation if you do decide to engage, from testing how serious the company is, to giving clear, constructive feedback that protects you while still being impactful.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Ty who bought us a coffee!"At 34, I thought that I was doomed to manage convenience stores for the rest of my life, as it is all I have ever done. But my desire to make a change was strong, so I prepared myself as well as I could, which led me to your podcast. After months of countless applications and rejections, I finally got offered my dream sales job in a field that is convenience store adjacent. Let this be a lesson that the advice that you guys dispense is universal, and not just for the academic world. If I can do it, anyone can, and if you feel stuck, do something about it. S6 Ep 9218: How to Impress in an Internship (and Get Hired After)
Starting your first internship can feel intimidating, especially if it’s your first time in a corporate environment. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down exactly how to impress from day one. From getting the dress code right and setting up your systems, to knowing when to ask questions (and when to back yourself), we cover the small details that make a big impact. We unpack how to stay organised, show initiative without overstepping, and build confidence even if you’re shy or feel out of your depth.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Christina who bought us 5 coffees!“I found Interview Boss the night before an interview and started with the episode meant for right before you go in. I immediately laughed when they said something like, 'If you’re listening to this to try and prepare for an interview…you’re listening at the wrong time.' Message received! So I went back and started listening to more episodes in the weeks leading up to my interviews. I had been in the same industry for 14 years and was finally ready to make a career change, which was both exciting and honestly a little intimidating. Your podcast helped me slow down and really think through my value, how to tell my story, and how to communicate my experience in a way that actually connected in interviews. By the time I went through the process, I felt so much more confident and prepared than I expected. And the best part…I got the job! S6 Ep 8217: Neurodivergence and accommodations in the job search - Part 1
Job Interviews aren't designed with every brain in mind. After hearing from listeners navigating interviews with ADHD, autism, and processing differences, Sarah and Emma dive into how traditional hiring processes can unintentionally test skills that have little to do with actually doing the job. From remembering answers on the spot and processing complex questions verbally, to eye contact, small talk, and performing in unfamiliar environments, we unpack the hidden expectations some candidates are facing. This episode is Part 1 of our deep dive into neurodivergence and the job hunt, focusing on self-reflection and understanding how your brain shows up in interviews before deciding whether to ask for adjustments. We’re also calling for listener stories to help shape Part 2, where'll we answer the big questions. If you’ve asked for accommodations, disclosed during hiring, or found strategies that made interviews more accessible, we’d love to hear from you.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sonya who bought us 10 coffees!“Dear Emma and Sarah, I started listening to your podcast in October 2025 after accepting a junior-level position because I felt it was the best I was going to get. Since 2023, I’ve been on a steady path of building skills and applying for roles, trying to reposition myself professionally. After running my own small business for ten years and then pivoting to pursue a MPH, I truly believed I would be able to land a meaningful position. Instead, I repeatedly heard that other candidates were “more suitable.” I revised my resume countless times and decided I needed to strengthen my skill set. I took Spanish classes because being bilingual was listed as a qualification in many job postings. But when I noticed that project management skills were consistently required for the roles I wanted, I studied for over a year and earned my Project Management Professional certification – something I wish I had discovered fifteen years earlier. (I would have run my business a lot better!) Then, I began applying for junior-level roles because I convinced myself I wasn’t qualified for more. That mindset led me to accept the job I mentioned earlier. Then I found your podcast. The most transformative shift came from the episode about interviews being a two-way process. I voraciously listened to as many episodes as I could while continuing to apply for jobs. Recently, I advanced to a panel interview with six executive leaders for a high-level role I wasn’t even sure I had a chance at. That was when I enrolled in Interview Academy. I had two weeks to prepare. What I discovered was that I had been approaching interviews in fragments; bits and pieces of preparation, but nothing cohesive. Interview Academy is structured which helped me step back and see the full scope of my 28-year career. I had spent so much time focusing on where I thought I “should be” that I minimized what I had actually accomplished. Through Interview Academy, I recognized the depth and breadth of my work: collaborating with local businesses, leading community outreach efforts, publishing a book, and launching an online industry magazine. I had been embarrassed by some of these things because I didn’t think they reflected “current” skills. Thanks to you Sarah and Emma, I could clearly see the impact I’ve made on organizations, clients, and colleagues. Now, as I pursue a career in philanthropy, I feel confident in what I bring to the next nonprofit I serve regardless if I get this position or not. My deepest gratitude and appreciation to you for creating something that helped me rediscover my professional worth. It was something I didn’t even realize I was looking for—but truly needed. S6 Ep 7216: Trial Shifts: What Employers Are Really Looking For
Being asked to come in for a trial shift can feel exciting…and slightly confusing. Is it a great sign? Is it free labour? And how do you actually perform well when you’re being assessed in real time?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack what you can expect at a trial shift, and why it’s often less about skill, and more about how you show up.We discuss what employers are actually looking for when they see you “in action,” especially in hands-on and customer-facing roles. Most importantly, we’ll help you shift your mindset. Because a trial isn’t just about being tested, it’s your opportunity to decide whether the job is right for you too.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Maisie who bought us 2 coffees!“Hey Emma and Sarah! Just wanted to thank you so much for your awesome and insightful podcast that helped me so much during my difficult job search journey. I've been looking for a new job in a totally new industry after having a terrible experience in my last company and leaving the job four months ago. The environment was toxic and the managers were really mean, and it meant my confidence in the working world was pretty low by the end of it. I started doing interviews as soon as I left and faced rejections, as well as two times where I actually did get the job, and then the offer got retracted afterwards due to budget cuts or them changing their mind. Feeling very defeated and making the decision to venture down a new path I found your podcast along the way and binged it all month, as well as listening to your pep talk episode about 4 times on route to each interview (love it!). Your advice made me feel confident, prepared and like I had all the attributes and skills to succeed within me so long as I prepared well, which you guys helped me do. Your lighthearted and funny outlooks also helped me feel less nervous and relaxed about the whole process. It's also worth mentioning that the success stories at the beginning of each episode not only inspired me, but helped me manifest to be one of those people one day getting the shoutout at the beginning of an episode because like those people, I'd achieved my dream job! I had a final interview for my perfect role last week, thinking it would be too good to be true to get it, but they called me on Friday to say I'd got the job. I was so beyond happy and I know your help was part of my success. S6 Ep 6215: You Can’t Hack Your Way Into a New Job: Correlation Does NOT Equal Causation!
Job searching can make you feel a little superstitious. One person swears a specific resume template got them hired. Someone else says it was the follow-up email. Another is convinced one “brilliant” question in the interview sealed the deal. But we have to remember: correlation does not equal causation!!!In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack the urge to assign a single cause to a complex outcome. We break down why our brains love to create neat little stories (hello, confirmation bias), especially when so much of the hiring process feels outside our control. We explain why those conclusions are often oversimplified, and sometimes completely wrong. If you’ve ever gone down a Reddit rabbit hole trying to reverse-engineer someone else’s success, this episode will bring you back to earth in the best way. The truth about landing a job is usually far less sexy than “one weird trick."🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lulu who bought us a coffee!“I've been job-searching for 16 months. I've had a good job at managerial level, but wanted to find something closer to home as the commute (1.5hrs each way) was too much with a family. I have been with my employer for 10 years so I was nervous about the recruitment process. I stumbled upon your podcast and listened religiously while driving (benefits of long commute.) Your tips make so much sense, but I would have not thought of them myself. I also really enjoyed your style and there were some LOL moments. I'm happy to say that after more than 15 applications, 4 interviews and 2 offers, I'm about to start a new job much closer to home that I'm very excited about. I used your tips for getting my career story polished, focusing on the best bits in my interview answers, fine tuning my SAR and accepting water at the interview. S6 Ep 5214: Applying for Your First Manager Role: Owning your Experience (Part 2)
What are you supposed to say in an interview…when you've never actually been a manager before? In Part 2 of this deep dive series, we explain why self-awareness is your secret weapon, what to say when you don’t have a perfect example, and how to show a growth mindset instead of panicking. We also share the fundamental advice every first-time manager isn’t always told, but absolutely needs to hear.Remember, you don’t need to fake leadership experience. You need to show how you think, how you learn, and how you’ll lead.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Kyle who bought us 5 coffees!“Hi Emma and Sarah! I would like to thank you both so much for the helpful advice on your episodes. After 6-7 months of interviewing I was able to land a job that I believe is the right fit for me with many opportunities for growth. I moved for personal reasons and I was leaving behind a job that I held for over 5 years. It was actually quite difficult to land a job that was the right fit for me. I had many swings and misses like making it to the final round 3 times prior to finally getting this role. But your episodes deep diving into your 'best bits' and really thinking and doing the hard part was much needed to keep persevering. I was able to connect my experiences and skills that I had acquired over the years to the job description and tailor my stories to what they were looking for. After the final interview I knew I had left it out all on the field. The very next day the hiring manager called me and said that the team loved me and that I would be a great fit. I was so excited that I had finally done it! After accepting the role I even listened to the episode on how to resign from your job as I've never had to before. Thank you again for all of your help! I cannot wait to start this new chapter in my life. I will forever recommend and listen when the time comes again for another job search. S6 Ep 4213: Applying for Your First Manager Role: Getting the Mindset Right (Part 1)
Going for your first manager-level role can feel like a whole different sport. Suddenly it’s less about your individual output and more about leadership, dealing with people problems and judgement. In Part 1 of this two-part series, Sarah and Emma unpack the mindset shift you need when applying for your first leadership role. We discuss the fear of not feeling “ready,” why trying to fake management experience almost always backfires, and how employers actually think about potential vs experience. If you’ve ever worried that not having the title automatically rules you out, this episode is for you.In the next episode (Part 2) we’ll get practical with leadership-focused interview questions and how to answer them. But first, let’s get your mindset right.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Leah who bought us a coffee!"Hi guys! Last year I did a 1-on-1 coaching session with Sarah which was the best decision I ever made. It gave me the confidence I needed to get through some big interviews I’d landed, and resulted in the best interviews I’ve ever had and two job offers to pick from. S6 Ep 3212: The Interview Horror Story that left us SPEECHLESS
What would you do if the interviewers started talking about you...while you were literally sitting right there? In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma react in real time to a listener story that made our jaws hit the floor.During an interview assessment, Katie could see live messages being exchanged between the recruiter and hiring manager about her performance, on the same laptop she was using! Yep. While she was doing the task!We unpack how to handle this if it happens to you, and what your options are in the moment.Do you speak up? Power through? Walk out? Or flag it later in writing?🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Cherie who bought us a coffee!“I found Interview Boss about 12 months ago when I had started searching for a new role after a career break to support my young family. My last role before the break was a manager/leadership role, and I was feeling stuck between wanting to return at the same level, and massively lacking confidence to apply at that level during a terrible job market. I also live in a regional area where the number of senior roles in my industry is fairly close to zero (yikes!). I had a couple of interviews in the first few months of searching, and though I felt the interviews generally went well, I didn't land the roles. Feeling depleted and questioning my skills, I listened to more of your episodes. That's when I went back to one of your older eps about writing your career story, and I realised that, in interviews, I was telling a career story that I had actually outgrown. So I re-wrote my career story and practised it until it felt natural but not rehearsed. By the next time I interviewed, my new career story really changed the tone and trajectory of the interview and gave me more confidence to share examples that better reflected my strengths as a leader. I'm thrilled to share that I start a new role next week after a year-long search. It's a leadership contract role with a brilliant community organisation. I'm so excited to get started, and so appreciative to Interview Boss for sparking my new perspective during the interview stage. S6 Ep 2211: Quitting your DISASTER new job. How much do you tell them about why you're leaving?
You’re only five months into a new role, but you’re burnt out, crying daily, and dreading every shift. You know you need to leave for your mental health, but the old advice is ringing in your ears: "Never resign without another job lined up!"In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma tackle a heavy listener dilemma from Rita, who is ready to walk away during her probation period but is struggling with how to approach the resignation conversation. Do you tell them exactly why the culture is toxic, or do you keep it professional and vague? We have a bit of a debate in this episode! We weigh up the "justice" route (letting them know exactly why they suck) versus the "protect your peace" route (saving your energy and moving on). Who is on which side? Who will you agree with?🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Molika “Hello Sarah and Emma! This is a bit of a late thank you but my 2025 spotify wrapped has reminded me of how much you guys helped me out during my stressful internship interviews. On the big day of my 2 biggest top preferences sites, I revisited 8 episodes in a row while on the PTV to the city and played the HYPE-UP podcast as I was walking towards the interview to shake off any last minute nerves. All the actionable preparation that you both shared made me feel so ready to conquer the interview- knowing that I had done all that I could- and I got my number 1 choice. S6 Ep 1210: Why you should start tracking your 'Best Bits' before you urgently need them
If you’re not ready to job hunt yet but you can feel a change is on the horizon and the idea of talking about your achievements makes your mind go blank, this episode is for you!Coming up with strong examples on the spot is one of the hardest parts of resumes and interviews! That's why creating a "best bits" tracker is one of the biggest gifts you can give your future-self!We break down how to turn yourself into a “best bits hunter,” what actually counts as a win (hint: it doesn’t have to save the company money or change the world), and simple, realistic ways to track your examples so you’ll actually stick with it.This habit does more than make resume writing easier. It helps you notice the impact of the work you’re already doing, builds confidence over time, and gives future you a list of epic stories to use in interviews, pay rise conversations and promotion opportunities, without the last-minute panic.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Annie who bought us 10 coffees!"In 2025, I was unemployed for five months and honestly losing hope. I was applying to everything, including roles below my previous experience and titles. Then, out of frustration, I saw a posting for a Director level role (I had previously been in a senior manager role) with a posted salary range nearly double what I had made before. At this point, I figured, 'why not?' and applied. To my total shock, I was invited to a recruiter screening, then a hiring manager interview, then an in-person interview. When each invitation appeared in my inbox, I verbally squealed and laughed. Before the in-person interview, I found Interview Boss and basically binged your ‘HELP I have a Job Interview Tomorrow!’ playlist. I took notes, pulled out my best bits and walked in with confidence (and my notebook with notes and best bit prompts). After the interview, I listened to your 'Listen to This Right After Your Interview' episode and it was a lifesaver. They reached out for a follow-up virtual call with the Hiring Manager, and I was told that they were deciding between me and one other candidate. This information CONSUMED me. Waiting was the worst! After a week of silence, I emailed the recruiter asking if they had an updated timeline. When she replied that she was still awaiting a decision from the Hiring Manager, maybe thanks to your podcast, I decided it was my time to shoot my shot. I sent a follow-up to the recruiter saying: If the Hiring Manager is still deciding between me and another candidate, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say, I really want this job (and then nicely listed 3 reasons why I am the perfect candidate and am so aligned with the organization and their vision for growth). I hit send and tried to not panic. An hour later, the recruiter replied saying that she loved my passion and would share it with the hiring manager. Five agonizing days later, I missed a call from their area code and assumed it was a rejection. I waited to listen to the voicemail, and to my literal shock heard, 'I have great news, please call me back.' I cried. I got the job! A level up in title and a 70% salary increase. I still can’t believe it. Your advice is practical and so doable. You help us job-seekers to articulate our experience, skills, and value. S5 Ep 44209: The benefits of applying for a job directly through the company website
There's nothing wrong with applying for a role through a job board - people get hired that way every single day. But sometimes it pays to apply directly through a company's website, especially when it's a role you're genuinely excited about. In this week's episode Sarah and Emma explain how going direct can give recruiters more context about you from the start. From accessing extra application fields and role details, to tracking your application and signing up for job alerts, we break down the practical benefits so you can decide when it's worth doing.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Katie who bought us 3 coffees!"Thank you so much, Sarah and Emma! I am SO excited to finally be writing in to tell you my success story. I’ve pictured this moment for months as I’ve listened to almost every episode of your podcast (some several times) and used your resources to fine tune my resume, best bits, and career story. It has been the most helpful guidance and support on my job search. Nearly 9 months ago I was laid off from a job I had been with for almost 7 years. At the time I absolutely loved the company and thought I would retire there. I stayed through multiple rounds of layoffs during my last couple of years there and never imagined it would be so hard to find a new role when my time to leave finally came. I embarked on my job search with no idea what I was doing. I live in the U.S., layoffs were hitting hard, and roles I applied for early on were getting pulled. I got very little results even with referrals from my network. I floundered around and felt like my career (and life) might be over. I finally found your podcast after several months of fruitless searching and got to work putting my best self forward. I started getting more interviews and got better at making sure I shared what I wanted to share even when the interviewer didn’t know what to ask for. After more than 300 applications and 22 interviews across 9 months, I am thrilled to share that I signed a contract for a new role yesterday! I was in final stage interviews with two companies and actually had the choice to turn down the one that wasn’t as good of a fit for me. My new role doesn’t pay as much as the one I was laid off from, but it is a good match skills-wise, the team seems fantastic, and I will have much better work-life balance, which is more important to me right now. I don’t think I would be in this position without your guidance and support. You helped me keep going, gain confidence, and get some momentum during a very challenging time. Your best bits and career story guidance helped me take back some control and steer my own ship again. I cannot thank you enough and I will be sharing your podcast with everyone I know who is on a job search. I hope you know the work you’re doing is making a difference and you made such a difference in my life when I really needed it. S5 Ep 43208: How to explain why you're taking a step down (convincingly!)
Stepping down a level on the career ladder can feel strangely just as intimidating as aiming higher. How do you explain why you want a less senior role without sounding like you’re burnt out, unmotivated, or trying to “quit” responsibility?Whether you’re shifting from director to individual contributor, prioritising family life, or simply craving work that’s meaningful without the extra leadership load, there is a way to tell this story so employers get it, without making the wrong assumptions about you.In this weeks episode, Sarah and Emma explain how to strike the right tone of vulnerability and intention, and how to balance your examples so you don’t accidentally signal that you’re still operating at a senior level. You’ll also hear how to frame what you loved about being an individual contributor, so this move sounds thoughtful, not like you’re stepping backwards.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Xuan who bought us 5 coffees!"Hi Emma and Sarah! I just wanted to thank you again. I’ve been listening religiously to your podcast for about 3 years now. I bought you some coffees 2 years ago when you helped me get out of a pretty toxic job, and I’m taking you out for a drink once again! My boyfriend was offered a position in a region we wanted to move to, and I was trying to find a job in the same area to join him. I work in Sustainability, and our job market has taken a serious hit this year, so I was stressed out thinking I would never find anything. You were there every step of the way, seemingly reading my mind and answering the questions I had with every new episode. I was amazed because even when I thought « Well, this episode’s not relevant for me, but I’ll listen to it anyway… », there you were, imparting precious words of wisdom, hope and encouragement. So I’m happy to say, for the second time… I’ve got the job! They even offered a 2k integration bonus - I never knew such a thing existed! Thank you so so much for the work you do, shepherding us lost souls across the treacherous terrain of job searching. I wish you all the best ! S5 Ep 42207: Unpacking the dreaded 'weaknesses' question
No one likes the “What’s your biggest weakness?” question. It’s awkward, overused, and honestly…a bit lazy. But it still pops up in lots of interviews, so you need to know how to answer it without sounding fake, cliché, or like you’ve been media-trained within an inch of your life.In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down what this question is actually about—self-awareness, vulnerability, integrity, and how to reflect honestly without spiraling. It’s not a trap, it’s not a “gotcha” moment and it’s definitely not an invitation to say you’re a perfectionist for the 900th time. We’ll unpack why those classic answers fall flat, how to choose a real weakness that isn’t a dealbreaker, and talk about what you’re doing to improve (without pretending you’ve magically “fixed” it).🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lauren who bought us 5 coffees!“Hey Sarah & Em. I just wanted to say a massive thank you for your podcast, it’s been a total game changer for me. Before going on parental leave, I got a new boss I really struggled with and decided not to go back after nine years with the same company. I’d had plenty of promotions but never actually interviewed for them, so I hadn’t interviewed in almost a decade, and never for senior roles. I was totally intimidated by the idea of interviewing again. During my parental leave, my sister told me about your podcast and wow, it was exactly what I needed. With a baby at home, I didn’t have much time to write, but I had heaps of time to listen, so I binged your episodes and found them so helpful. From the big stuff like Best Bits, Career Story and your ChatGPT prompt that stopped me sounding like a total weirdo, to the more specific advice like answering diversity questions or why I'm receiving emails at 2am, all of it was gold. At first, I met with recruiters when I’d only prepped a few rough best bits and no career story, and instantly regretted it, as I knew I wasn’t coming across well. So I put in the work, built out a solid career story and 15 strong best bits, and the difference was night and day. I felt so confident and ended up nailing my interviews. Your podcast genuinely made all the difference. Thanks for the practical, down-to-earth advice, you helped me get back out there and land a great role after parental leave.🎥 Top Interview Tips https://www.interviewboss.com.au/top-interview-tips🏫 To get step by step help with your interview prep on demand check out our Interview Academy https://www.interviewboss.com.au/interview-academy☕ Did our podcast help you out? S5 Ep 41206: Should you bring a display folder full of achievements to your job interview?
Should you bring a display folder to your job interview, or is that a bit of an overkill? This week, we're answering a listener question about whether it's worth bringing along your certificates, volunteering highlights, and uni achievements.Sarah and Emma explain who this works best for (hello new grads and early-career applicants), how it can add to your overall impression, and the easiest way to introduce it without feeling awkward. This strategy only works if you have meaningful, relevant things to include. We don't endorse stuffing a folder full of random stuff for the sake of it!🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Anne who bought us 10 coffees!"To my Aussie interview boss QUEENS, I just had a huge career WIN and had to come straight here to thank you. For some context, I discovered your podcast a few years ago during unemployment because I had terrible 'Interview Mode' syndrome and public-speaking anxiety, but after 8 months of crafting and practicing my best bits, shooting my shot with employers, and squeezing my butt cheeks to fight the nerves, I became a happily employed lifetime weekly listener at my dream job! Well, after a few years in my dream role, I was asked to speak at a work conference in Miami to share successes and lessons learned with others in my field about using AI and growing my global team! At first, I freaked out and wanted to say no, given my public-speaking anxiety, but I thought of you two in my corner and how far I'd come, so, I decided to give it a try and say yes! For the month leading up to it, I prepped my stories to present as best bits and even scripted my responses, thinking the scripts would help me feel prepared, but the nerves were still high and literally keeping me up at night. I was so worried I was going to FREEZE and black out and forget everything! Your two recent episodes about going into 'Interview Mode' and 'The interview prep step you're not doing enough of' about deep critical thinking and being present were game changers for me. In my final prep week, I threw the scripts out the window and focused instead on story telling from memory and the heart. THIS WORKED! The anxiety dropped SIGNIFICANTLY, and my stories improved tenfold. I was finding all kinds of parts that were amazing to share that I would've missed rehearsing a script! Well, when the day came to present in Miami, I was nervous, but prepared, I didn't black out on stage, I remembered my stories and received TWO rounds of applause and shoutouts from participants after that they felt my presentation was the most engaging one. Both co-founders of the company leading the conference even congratulated me on my storytelling! They asked me to come work for them and I joked, 'Thank you, but you can't afford me!' It was all so amazing. Anyway, I can't thank you two enough, because thinking about you cheering me on that day (and laughing to myself as I squeezed my butt cheeks in my seat before going on stage...) was the best. Your resources are invaluable and apply for all kinds of career situations. S5 Ep 40205: Should I apply if I don't have quite enough experience?
When a job ad lists a certain number of years’ experience, there’s no way to know whether it’s a hard and fast rule or just a guide, and that’s exactly the point. Since you can’t predict which way a company will lean, if you’re close enough, it’s worth applying. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma explain how to make that call and share when it’s worth shooting your shot.We use listener Charlotte’s situation as a case study, but this advice applies to anyone second-guessing their experience level. You’ll learn how to judge whether a role is a stretch or a realistic next step, how to show the depth of your experience on your resume (not just the length), and why shooting your shot can sometimes be exactly what pays off.We also chat about creative ways to network your way in and why quitting without a backup plan usually isn’t the magic solution.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sarah who bought us 5 coffees!"Hi Emma and Sarah! I found your podcast after having a conversation with my director about a management position that opened on my unit. For background, I am an Endoscopy Nurse and my unit has gone through lots of turnover. Our previous manager, while a lovely person, was promoted from within our unit (before I worked there) and never had support or guidance on how to be an effective leader. Unsurprisingly, she struggled and ended up leaving the position. I spoke to my director about applying for the position and we discussed the difficulties of transitioning from staff member to manager. She suggested looking for podcasts on interview tactics and I found you two! I found your episodes super helpful and easy to navigate. I joined the Interview Academy and worked through the modules. I had four (four!) rounds of interviews, more than I've ever had for a position. I brought in notes and a water bottle. I remembered to clench my bum! And I crushed the interviews! I've never felt so prepared for an interview or so confident coming out of them. I am happy to say that I got the job! I just finished up my first week in my new position and while it's been a massive information overload, I'm so happy. I'm so glad I found the two of you! I've been telling everyone I know about your podcast and how helpful it was for me. S5 Ep 39204: Don't be fooled by the 'casual chat' trap
You’ve been invited in for a “casual chat.” No panel, no formal questions, maybe even coffee instead of a meeting room. Sounds chill, right? Not so fast. These chats might feel relaxed, but they’re still interviews, and plenty of people get caught out by treating them like they’re not.In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack what “just a chat” really means, when it happens in the hiring process, and why it can be even trickier than a structured interview. They’ll break down the common mistakes people make: from under-prepping to over-formalising, and share how to find that sweet spot of being prepared and personable. You’ll learn how to tell your career story naturally, weave in your best examples without sounding rehearsed, and leave a great impression (even if it’s over lattes). Because if there’s one thing you shouldn’t be fooled by, it’s the word “casual.”🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Caroline who bought us 2 coffees!"I found you girls a couple of years ago and listened to the ‘listen to this right before your interview’ episode (I didn't get the job). Fast forward to a couple of months ago and I was ready to apply for another position and started relistening to most of your podcasts. I was sick and tired of telling people that I was shit at interviews. The podcasts were great but I needed more so I enrolled in Interview Academy. The timing was perfect as I applied for a position at the same time and thought if I get the interview I will be happy. I got the interview and had two weeks to prepare so I completed the course and listened to about 30 or more podcasts and finished the course during this time (2 days before the interview). This position is two levels above my current role (I work in NSW Health). I was so confident going into the interview but nervous as usual. I walked out thinking that I didn't get the job as I didn't answer some questions as well as I thought I should. Today I received a letter of offer. Now the base of the salary band is what I was expecting which is $13k more than I am currently earning. However they offered me $14k more than that. My new income is $27k more!!! Thank you sooooooooooooooooooooo much. Before listening to your podcasts I would have never in my wildest dreams applied for a job at this level. S5 Ep 38203: What it means when a job ad gets reposted after you apply
Seeing the job you’ve applied for get re-posted can send you into a full-blown spiral. Does it mean you’re out of the running? That they didn’t like your application? Or is it just bad hiring? In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack exactly what’s going on behind the scenes when a role pops up again after you’ve already applied. From lazy auto-reposts to managers chasing a “perfect” unicorn candidate, there are plenty of reasons that have nothing to do with you. We’ll talk through what might actually be happening, when it does mean something, and what smart next steps you can take (including when to follow up — and when to just let it go).🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Nikita who bought us 5 coffees! S5 Ep 37202: When it’s not a match: How to pivot an interview into a coffee chat
Sometimes in an interview, it becomes clear there’s a genuine mismatch. Maybe they're after three years of experience in an area you’ve only just become familiar with, or the role requires travel, which you can't commit to.In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack how to gracefully pivot an interview for a role that’s not the right fit, into a valuable coffee chat instead. This one was inspired by a listener story from Carmen, who turned a dead-end interview into a brilliant networking opportunity. We explain how to politely acknowledge the dealbreaker and shift gears without burning bridges.Disclaimer: This isn’t a strategy for when you’re just not feeling it — it’s for those rare situations where the gap really can’t be bridged, and knowing how to handle it gracefully can leave a lasting impression.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Sam who bought us 3 coffees!"Wow! Thank you so much! I had an interview today for a job I really wanted, teaching children with learning disabilities, and received a phone call tonight offering me the position! I’m so grateful that I found your podcast. The few interviews I’ve had in the past I’ve normally fumbled my way through. However, this time I felt so prepared and confident with my career story, why I wanted to work there and my 'best bits'. They were super impressed when I whipped out the questions in my notebook after they asked if I had any questions for them. I didn’t even need to use my panic phrases which were also in my notebook 😂. Now I’ll go listen to the episodes about what to do once you have the job. Thanks again! S5 Ep 36201: Diagnosing & treating 'Interview Mode' Syndrome: from robotic to real
There's a mysterious condition sweeping through jobseekers everywhere - and no one's immune. It's called 'Interview Mode' Syndrome, and it only flares up in interview conditions. Symptoms include sudden amnesia about your own achievements, robotic tone, and an uncontrollable urge to say 'stakeholder engagement' way too many times. In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma put on their lab coats to diagnose what's really going on when your natural personality suddenly disappears in interviews. We explain why this syndrome hits harder when it's your dream job or you're interviewing in a second language, and most importantly - how to cure it. It's time to ditch the filter and start communicating like a real human again.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Eirini who bought us 10 coffees!“My Kiwi friend introduced me to your podcast a few months ago. I have been job hunting for a while and was recently invited to interview for a job that would result in me changing fields, which is exciting but also filled me with doubt about whether I could really do the job or not. I found so many of your episodes super useful when preparing for the interview. I spent a long time writing my 'best bits', but the advice you gave about the 'tell me about yourself' question, about presentations, and so many other things has also been invaluable. Most importantly, writing the best bits gave me an overview of my career and, seeing in writing all the skills I have acquired, I realised that my transferable skills guarantee that I could do the job if I were to get it. This boosted my confidence massively. Overall, I have never felt so prepared going into an interview before. I had the interview yesterday and was told I will find out the outcome next week. No matter what happens, I know that I represented myself as well as I could have done. Enjoy your coffees and thank you so much for your amazing podcast. S5 Ep 35200: The job interview prep step you're not doing enough of
Ever walked out of an interview thinking, “I prepared so much… why didn’t my stories land?” So many people practice their 'best bits' stories to within an inch of their life BUT they skip the most powerful (and hardest) step - proper thinking time.In this episode, Sarah and Emma unpack why slowing down to actually think about your stories (not just rehearse them) is what gives your answers real depth and confidence. They share how to dig into your stories, uncover the magic ingredient that allows an interviewer to REALLY understand the impact you had, and see all your incredible skills. For some of you, this ep will be the aha moment lightbulb game-changer you need.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Christina “Hi Emma and Sarah, I just wanted to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you. A week before my big internal interview, I was feeling incredibly stressed and insecure, especially knowing I’d be going up against three colleagues. Your episodes on internal interviews really gave me the boost I needed. I committed myself to reviewing as much of your content as I could, and within 24 hours after my interview, I got the call: I was the successful candidate! My first thought was, “Thank you, Emma and Sarah.” Your work gave me the clarity, confidence, and calm I needed to show up as my best self. S5 Ep 34199: Job offer dilemma - more money or more security?
Having two job offers on the table sounds like the dream, but in reality, it can feel like a nightmare decision. Do you take the higher-paying contract role with less security, or settle for the lower salary in a permanent role that feels “safer”?This week, Sarah and Emma unpack a listener dilemma from Lizzy, who’s weighing up a permanent job at a luxury brand with average pay and worrying reviews, against a short-term contract role at a startup with a huge salary boost. We’ll break down the real meaning of job security (hint: it’s not always about being “permanent”), the financial trade-offs to consider, and how to factor in growth, culture, and risk tolerance when making a big career decision. Plus, we’ll share a thought experiment that helps reframe the choice and remind you that every role adds to your career story. If you’ve ever been torn between two offers, or just wondered what you’d do if that lucky day came - this episode will give you a practical framework to make the decision with confidence.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Regina who bought us 3 coffees!“I just wanted to say a big thank you for your podcast. I’ve been listening for weeks in the run-up to my diagnostic radiographer interview on Friday 12th September, both at home and on my drives to work, and it has made such a difference. I particularly like the way you break things down into the “best bits.” As a middle-aged woman with a lot of work experience, I found your guidance on structuring “tell me about yourself” so helpful. The episode about what to do when your mind goes blank was a life saver for me, as I can be a nervous interviewee. What I value most is that your advice feels practical and natural, not overly scripted. Even if I get a little derailed, I can always find my way back, and that gave me real confidence going into the interview. So thank you so much for the work you put into this. S5 Ep 33198: How to 'Shoot Your Shot' at your dream job (even when they aren't hiring)
Ever spotted your dream company online only to realise they aren’t advertising any roles? It can feel like there’s no way in, but what if you could create your own opportunity? In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down how to “shoot your shot” with a company when there isn’t a job listed. From crafting a specific, targeted pitch to finding the right person to email, we cover everything you need to know to get your name noticed. We’ll walk through the do’s and don’ts, how to research the company and role, and the best ways to follow up so you stay on their radar. Plus, we explain when this strategy is a good idea and when it might be a long shot.Disclaimer: This is a “shoot your shot” approach. It doesn’t guarantee outcomes. You might not get a response, and that’s normal. The goal is to put yourself on the company’s radar, not to expect a job offer.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Grace who bought us 3 coffees!"WOW. I’ve been manifesting writing this LOL and it’s finally my reality! I have been interviewing for NINE MONTHS and could not understand why I kept getting runner up. Well, I was starting to interview with a company I was really interested in, thought I flunked the recruiter call and then luckily got a call back for the hiring manager interview, just in time for me to come across you ladies! I binge listened while I was flying across the USA and realised… I have been interviewing backwards. I had a COMPLETE mindset shift going from guessing interview questions to focusing on my best bits. This was a complete game changer. I killed the hiring manager interview and the skip level interview (continuing to listen to episodes along the way). I just had the Team Interview left in person. On my way there I randomly decided to listen to the episode about if you have bad interviewers and while I enjoyed the people I talked with, they didn’t ask me a single question!!! Luckily I knew how to take back MY interview and sneak in my stories I knew I wanted to share. I got an email saying they wanted to offer me the role before I even got home. I’m so stoked!!! S5 Ep 32197: Cracking the company values question (without selling your soul)
Being asked about company values in a job interview can feel like a minefield. Do they want a big-picture statement, or a real-life example? And how do you stop yourself from sounding like you’ve just memorised their website? In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down how to answer values-based interview questions with confidence. Whether you’re interviewing in healthcare, corporate, government, or any workplace where values guide decision-making, we’ll show you how to stand out.We cover how to remember company values (hint: acronyms are your best friend) and why specific examples are the key to success. You’ll also hear sample answers that demonstrate the difference between simply saying you align with the values and actually showing it through your work.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lucy Kate who bought us 3 coffees!"GIRLS!!! You helped get me the only job that I wanted! I quit my old workplace in April due to being extremely burnt out and went backpacking around Asia solo, completely unemployed with no back up plan. 6 weeks after applying for a job, I was notified that I was shortlisted and had an interview (federal gov so it takes a long time). At this point I was in a village in remote Thailand teaching English to kids at a school. I binged all your episodes and prepared hard. I had to google translate to one of the teachers asking to borrow a blazer and asking if the school could let all the kids know to stay away from my room as my interview was in the middle of lunch 😂. I thought I did okay at the interview but overthought a few things. It took a total of three months to find out I got the role with the panel providing comments on how well spoken I was and how much they loved my examples I tied into the questions. I can’t thank you girls enough for supporting me in a very unsettled period of my life. S5 Ep 31196: Beware of the negativity spiral
Losing hope in your job search? You’re not alone - but be careful where you turn for support. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma issue a warning about the dangers of falling into online negativity spirals. From comment sections and forums it can feel like everyone is struggling - like the system is broken, and it’s you vs the world. And while there’s often a kernel of truth to these ideas, they can quickly become an echo chamber of hopelessness.Whether it’s job scams, ghosting recruiters or hearing “no one gets hired through ads anymore,” this kind of content might feel validating, but it can also derail your confidence, your mindset and your motivation.Note: This episode is the warning, not the “what to do instead.” If you’re after mindset support or actionable info, check out these episodes:You’re Not Alone- How to Tackle Job Search RejectionHow Job Search can Affect your Mental HealthJob Search Myths Busted🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to JB “I promised myself that when I landed a job I would shout you guys the coffees you deserve. Your help and advice over the past year of job hunting has been unbelievably helpful and I have upped my interview game tenfold. As exhausting and emotionally taxing as the job hunt is, I knew I was getting better at the whole process with each interview. It’s been a rollercoaster, with so many “almost but not quite” responses and the neverending emotional tenacity that is required to keep picking yourself up again and again. I start my new job on Monday: one that is right up my alley, a step up, close to home, higher pay and part-time. The vibe from the first interview has been fantastic, I’ve been myself, and everything has been easy peasy since. No mixed signals, no “do they like me?!” Like a good relationship, it’s been straightforward and friendly. I almost gave up a couple of months ago and threw in the towel. S5 Ep 30195: The types of multi-part interview questions and how to tackle them
Ever been hit with an interview question that feels like it has five different parts rolled into one? You start answering, then halfway through you realise you’ve completely lost track of what they even asked. Multi-part interview questions are the worst and they pop up all the time, especially in government, education, and healthcare recruitment. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down exactly why interviewers ask these diabolical mega-questions, the different types you might come across, and how to tackle them without freezing up or rambling. From two-criteria-in-one to full multi-part criteria dumps (yes, they’re as bad as they sound), we’ll give you practical tools to stay calm, stay structured, and actually impress the panel. We’ll cover how to take quick notes without it feeling awkward, why repeating the question is your secret weapon, and the step-by-step way to break down your answer so you don’t leave out the good stuff.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Foxypee who bought us 5 coffees!"Thank you so much for your inspiring, comprehensive, practical, authentic, accurate, backed by evidence & real life experience podcast. S5 Ep 29194: I quit, and it didn't even seem like anyone cared?!
You’ve handed in your resignation and maybe even felt guilty about leaving your team in the lurch. But instead of a heartfelt send-off, you notice you’re left off meeting invites, your projects are quietly reassigned, and your manager suddenly feels distant. By your last week, it’s…crickets. Was none of it appreciated? Did you not matter after all?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack why a quiet exit can sting so much and why it’s usually not about you at all. From the loss of identity that comes with leaving a role, to the awkward “ex” dynamic of wanting closure from people you’re walking away from, we’ll help you reframe the silence and see it for what it is: practicality, not personal rejection. We’ll share why colleagues might not know how to give you the farewell you expected, how to separate your worth from your exit, and practical ways to create your own closure so you can leave on a high note.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Clara who bought us 3 coffees!“I can’t thank you enough for all the tips and support through the process of resigning from a job I never liked, to getting my dream job. At one point, I started loosing faith, because even when I was having the best interviews, thanks to your guidance, they would always go for someone with more experience. Today I had the interview that changed everything, it felt like I didn’t need to try so hard and I still got offered the job. I blame the endless hours listening to your tips, because interviewing went from something I used to dread to a fine art where I could sell myself and not even have to think about it. For now, it’s the foot in the door, it’s a short term contract, but it’s in my dream company, so I can only see possibilities afterwards. And even if there is nothing after the contract runs it’s course, I can’t put into words how much you have helped me to understand that the right job is worth waiting for and that I am worth it. S5 Ep 28193: How to actually tell your boss you're quitting - without feeling like a terrible person!
Quitting your job can feel less like a professional decision and more like a personal betrayal, especially when your boss has been kind, the timing is awkward, or you just really hate confrontation. In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack all the emotional landmines that come with handing in your resignation. From guilt and fear, to navigating tricky situations like quitting a job you just started, or leaving for a competitor, we’ve got your back. You’ll learn how to deliver the news without lying, oversharing, or crumbling into an apology spiral and get a word-for-word script you can use to start the conversation. If you’ve been putting off that dreaded chat with your boss, this is your sign to rip the Band-Aid off, and do it with confidence.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Alex who bought us 20 coffees!"Hi Emma & Sarah, Excuse the essay but this is a very big heartfelt thank you note. I have wanted to “shout you a coffee” for ages but wanted to hold off until I hit the goal of job change! I’m officially week two into THE job, and I couldn’t have done it without you. Truly. I’ve been a massive fan of your podcast for a long time (I might have a shot at #1 listener) and did a 1:1 session early on - back then I didn’t know exactly what I needed but the session prompted me to do some deeper digging and spend some time figuring out the journey I wanted to go on. The insights I gained from you both have helped me across a wide range of things: applying for Marketing Academy (I got down to the very last round!), getting involved in volunteering (with a selective interview round), how to approach some of the tougher career subjects with mentees & direct reports, & finally applying for new roles. I ultimately made the call to wait out for the big job…and patience and persistence have paid off! It’s a role that makes my tail wag and is a new industry that I can still bring my experience to. I’ve recommended you to just about everyone I know & will continue to. Your work has made such an impact on my life, and I’m so grateful. S5 Ep 27192: How to conquer Internal Interviews - Part 2: Strategy & Preparation!
Internal interviews can feel super weird, especially when your panel includes people you already work with. Maybe it's your current manager, someone you had a tricky project with, or just colleagues you usually chat to in the kitchen. So how do you pitch yourself without feeling awkward, fake, or like you're stating the obvious? In Part 2 of our deep dive on Internal Interviews, Sarah and Emma share the practical strategies you need to prepare with confidence.HINT: It's exactly the same as preparing for an external interview, just with more nuance! We discuss the importance of explaining WHY you're applying for the new role, how much context to give when the panel should technically already know what you do and how to shape your career story. We also tackle office politics, like whether to tell your team you've applied, how to handle potentially managing your friends and how to ask for feedback once it's all over.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lauren who bought us 3 coffees!"Sarah and Emma! I have been job searching since October 2024. I went for a big promotion at work and didn't even make it to the second round, despite doing the job in the interim capacity for six months. I was so bummed, but I knew I had to start looking for my next step. I have always interviewed well and thought that I had my preparation down pat. I discovered your podcast after getting a few second-round interviews and being the runner-up in those searches. I also became determined to be more selective in both my applications and interviews and truly interview my prospective employers as much as they were interviewing me. This summer I found a position that matches all of my talents and interests working as a public servant in local government, and I went for it. I had my Best Bits nailed! I landed the job after two interviews, one job assessment exercise, and three reference calls later. I am very grateful for your advice, your humor, and in particular, the psych-up and cool-down episode for pre-and post-interview. After each interview, I was only allowed to call two besties to vent and then put it aside, per your advice! Thank you again for spreading these best practices in interviews. I recommend you podcast often to the young people in my life who are just starting out this process! PS: I need to set the record straight on American coffee. I'm a Californian and want to say we have some of the best coffee beans (and wine). And some of us enjoy a straight cappuccino and espresso, and even a flat white now and then as our drinks of choice, okay?!! Enjoy your coffees! S5 Ep 26191: How to conquer Internal Interviews - Part 1: Mastering Your Mindset
Internal interviews can feel so much harder than regular ones. You're walking into a room full of people who already know you, so how are you meant to do yourself justice without feeling awkward, cringey, or fake?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down the mindset blocks that come up when you're interviewing for a job in your current workplace. Whether you’re going for a supervisor role, a promotion, or just a new challenge, internal interviews come with their own set of mental hurdles. We’ll unpack the fear of reintroducing yourself to people you already work with, taking too much credit for shared wins, the colleague comparison trap, and how to handle the awkwardness, whether you do or don’t get the job.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Davis who bought us a coffee!“Hello or as my Aussie coworkers say, G’day! I am in California and have been listening to your podcast in prep to apply to an internal role. Every episode was so helpful and the resources you two provide are invaluable! S5 Ep 25190: Why you shouldn't let the high number of applicants stop you from applying
POV: You’ve just stumbled across an AMAZING job ad on LinkedIn, but you immediately notice that dreaded “100+ applicants” warning, and suddenly, imposter syndrome kicks in.In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma break down the truth behind LinkedIn’s job stats and why that scary number might not be as intimidating as it seems. We unpack the four different “buckets” of applicants, explain how many people actually meet the full criteria (hint: it’s less than you think), and why being a good match still gives you a solid shot, even in a tough market. If you’ve ever felt discouraged seeing high applicant numbers, this episode will change how you think about competition and help you refocus your energy where it counts.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Celia who bought us 6 coffees!"Hi Emma and Sarah, I just wanted to say how incredibly grateful I am for your podcast. Earlier this year, I was laid off and the job market in my city has been brutal. I felt defeated and had to deal with all the lows of job hunting, including being ghosted by recruiters after investing so much time in interviews. I actually found your podcast while I was feeling especially frustrated after completing all the interview rounds with a company, only to think the HR contact was ghosting me. That’s when I came across one of your episodes where you talked about how being the backup candidate isn’t always bad. Fast forward a month, I realised I needed to shift my approach and the way you emphasized storytelling in interviews really clicked. I went to an in-person panel interview with six people and left them so impressed that I received a life changing offer. But here’s the twist. I ended up turning it down because I got an even better offer from the original company I thought had ghosted me. It turns out they hired internally for that first role, but a similar position opened up and they wanted me for it. I’m now a month in and I’m genuinely happy and confident, thanks in no small part to the skills, mindset, and advice I learned from you both. For all my fellow job seekers out there, don’t lose hope and focus on storytelling or your 'best bits,' as Emma and Sarah would say. Thank you both so much. S5 Ep 24189: Our favourite green flags in the interview process
You’re deep in the interview process and wondering…is this place actually going to be a good fit?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma unpack the subtle green flags to look out for throughout the hiring process - things that can give you insight into what the company’s really like to work for. From interviewers who clearly know the role and team, to honest conversations about the challenges of the job, to getting a genuine sense of the company culture and values, these clues can help you figure out if you’ll thrive there. While no single sign tells the whole story, these insights can help you read between the lines before accepting an offer.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Milah who bought us 3 coffees!“Dearest Emma & Sarah, I don’t know how to fully thank you. First, thank you for highlighting real people and their stories. It has helped me to feel like I’m not alone in the job process. Second, thank you for sharing your adorable Aussie accent, hilarious jokes, and amazing wisdom! After moving across the state almost a year ago, feeling frustrated in the job search, and recently deciding to leave my job due to unfair circumstances, I found out last week that I landed a role at a bank that I was really hoping to get after two interviews and with no banking experience! It has amazing pay and benefits, and I’m truly just so grateful. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the timing of landing this job paralleled discovering your podcast! Thank you for helping me feel like I have something of value to offer employers and find my footing in showcasing that during interviews! I truly think we’d be great friends in real life. I love your content; I also have a sister in real life and love that you gals get to do this together. A couple of questions…do you guys love Bluey as much as we do in the states?? S5 Ep 23Best bits advanced: the art of the mix!
You’ve prepped your best bits - epic stories that can be adapted to the key themes of the job like working with stakeholders, problem solving, and leadership. But when you step back and look at them as a whole…do they paint a well-rounded picture of you?In this week’s episode, Sarah and Emma explain how even strong, adaptable stories can end up giving a one-dimensional impression if they all centre around the same kind of experience. Maybe every example comes from one job, or they all focus on high-pressure wins without showing your collaborative or day-to-day strengths. We’ll show you how to audit your best bits list to make sure you're showcasing the breadth of your experience, not just repeating different versions of the same narrative. You'll learn how to balance your story bank, fill any gaps, and walk into your interview ready to show the full picture of what you bring to the table.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Alice who bought us 5 coffees!“Hi Emma and Sarah! I am such a fan of the podcast. Your content is so fun and very digestible which is why I have been a listener for nearly 2 years. You have helped me on what has been a roller coaster of a job search so buckle up. I work in the legal industry and have been trying to break away from a paid internship type role into my first job as a legit lawyer. My dream was to move out of state and work in a certain job. I interviewed for this job the first time and just missed out (i.e. runner up candidate). I listened to your episode on being the runner up candidate which was awesome during this time. This gave me the kick up the backside that I needed to improve what I could control. I got a career coach to look through my resume and signed up for Interview Academy. After doing the course and showing off my best bits, I left every interview I got in the meantime feeling awesome and like I did my best. I even interviewed for my dream job, but I got so close and missed out. But it didn’t hit me as hard. Interview after interview, and rejection after rejection, after about a year of searching. I kept revisiting my notes, best bits, and your episodes to help me realise that I am an awesome candidate. You really gave me the confidence to realise that. One of these interviews was for a job in my home state. This was a lawyer job with such good training and experience. I got into a pool which I was bummed about at first, but then I went travelling and within a few weeks, got the offer! I will be starting a few weeks after I return. Even though I didn’t come out of the process with my so called “dream job”, I am so grateful that your help has led me to a bigger realisation. I realised that putting a job on a pedestal can be a bad thing and I am so happy with the job I got. I get to be with my family and friends for a little longer, gain awesome experience, and really evaluate what I want in my career and life. Maybe even get that out of state job when I’ve got experience behind me! You are amazing at what you do and give job seekers the confidence to never be ashamed of trying. Getting fired doesn’t have to stop you from landing your next amazing gig, but it can make things tricky. This week on Interview Boss, Sarah and Emma unpack a real-life listener dilemma: what to do when you’ve been let go from a job, didn’t get a chance to mention it in the first interview, and now you’re facing the CEO in round two.Do you come clean? Hope they don’t ask? Risk losing the offer?Tune in for our honest take on transparency in multi-stage interviews and how much to disclose.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Amy who bought us 5 coffees!“So after 10 years at my job in the tv industry I was made redundant and felt like absolute shit. I was definitely stuck in a rut at my old job and had no career growth due to management always giving opportunities to favourites and leaving me behind. After taking a month-long holiday, I started looking for jobs. I didn't apply to just anything, I wanted it to be the right fit for me and a good match. So the only job I applied for, I got a call for an interview 4 days later. Having not done an interview in 10 years I panicked and started prepping by listening to your podcast. I took notes, was totally prepared and absolutely aced the interview (the listen to right before your interview ep helped too!) and totally confident in answering the salary expectation question and put it back on them. They called a few days later for a "coffee chat with the GM" - but I knew this was actually a "second interview" and listened to those eps. Again I walked out feeling great and they called to offer me the job the next day. I negotiated my butt off to push them to the absolute max salary (thanks to you guys), and now I'm getting paid $50k more than my old job. And the funniest thing is the office is right down the street from my old work, so I will definitely be running into ex colleagues and I'll have a huge smile on my face when I do! It's pretty funny when I'm parking right outside my old work, they must be very confused! Anyway thank you ladies you rock!! S5 Ep 20What no one tells you about Interview Case Studies & Presentations
Feeling totally unprepared for a take home task or presentation in an interview? You're not alone. From pitching marketing strategies to solving a business problem or presenting what you'd tackle in your first 90 days, more employers are asking their candidates to show their skills, not just talk about them. But how are you supposed to provide insights for a company you don't even work at yet?! And what if they steal your ideas?!In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma address these common fears. We explain how much time to spend preparing, what the employer is looking for and why showing your thinking matters way more than having all the answers.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Lauren who bought us 10 coffees!"Hey interview boss queens, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your content. I was a regular listener for your podcast for about 12 months while I searched for a job (I am a project manager, working in commercial media). I networked, polished my resume, interviewed over and over again. I got close thrice (second interview, final stage) only to be rejected due to more specialised applicants. Your acknowledgement of how hard the mental struggle is to persist was really validating I'm so pleased to say I've just signed a contract on a new job which comes with a $17k pay rise, with commission and higher earning potential in the future!! It's a strategy & sales role, the perfect fit for me. Your interview tips, best bits packaging, and frank advice on starting with the resume, as well as how to network all got this over the line for me (I previously worked at the same company as the Head of Sales and reached out to them who invited me to apply). YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST. If I can leave my own tip, I always read 'The First 90 Days' by Michael D. S5 Ep 19What to include in your career story to ace that first interview question!
“So… tell me about yourself.""So...why have you applied for this job?""So...tell me a bit about your career."You're almost guaranteed to be asked a variation of this question FIRST in an interview, yet so many people gloss over it.In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma explain how this is a golden opportunity to fill in the blanks on your resume for the hiring manager and help them understand how your career path has unfolded and what's motivated you along the way.We share two examples of real career stories to help you understand the kind of powerful insights a great answer can offer, and how it can shape the way the employer sees your entire application. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Savannah who is an Interview Academy alumni!"Hello! Just messaging to give you some feedback on Interview Academy. I used the program to apply and interview for my dream job (internal application at my current workplace) and was successful! I was also told that this recruitment was particularly competitive. When offered the job the hiring manager and several panel members told me that they were seriously impressed with my interview skills. I even used my interview preparation for one of my best bits. I was asked 'tell me about a time you faced a set back at work and what actions did you take after the situation.' I spoke about my previous interview and how I wasn’t successful and received feedback that my interview answers were not detailed enough. In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma explain why sponsorship is rarely advertised in job ads, and why temporary roles are often the best starting point. We share how to research your visa options, build a flexible plan when the future is uncertain and when it's time to move on from an employer who won't commit.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Ruth who bought us a coffee!“Less than 24 hours before my job interview, I found your podcast on a long drive to my friends to get my hair fixed (yes, the day before an interview, last minute!). I immediately found your way of talking easy to listen to and understand (kiwi here), I loved your take on interviews and by the return journey I had listened to the Best Bits episode and the Pre-interview pep talk one too. I spent my evening scoping out 4 of my best bits and all the relevant Q topics they could answer. I had already prepped in my own way, and also prepared a 10-min presentation of a campaign as requested, but the best bits idea just unlocked something for me and I knew I was going to do well. Instead of waiting for them to ask the 'right' questions for me to share what I wanted, I just turned every question into talking about what I wanted to share. Sometimes it was a cheeky pivot, but they didn't seem to care. I had them grinning ear-to-ear, loving my ideas and when I said my ideal salary at the end they were just like, "yes makes sense". Before the day was out they told me I was the preferred candidate, they checked my references and Monday told me I'd gotten it and they gave me the highest available salary for that position. (Only $3k shy of my pie-in-the-sky ideal). There are many things I've done to get to this point to build my confidence after being self-employed for 8 years, but I honestly credit the cherry on top of feeling 100% ready and that I was going to smash it was from you guys. Thank you so much - I finally feel that this mid-career pivot is paying off. Also I'm telling all my friends to listen.”🎥 Check out BRAND NEW free training - Top Interview Tips https://www.interviewboss.com.au/top-interview-tips🏫 To get step by step help with your interview prep on demand check out our Interview Academy https://www.interviewboss.com.au/interview-academy☕ Did our podcast help you out? S5 Ep 16The one thing most jobseekers forget to negotiate: their start date!
You’ve signed the contract for your new job, but that doesn’t mean you have to start the very next day!In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma explain why there's no need to rush from one job straight to another and how to clearly communicate that you'll be taking a short break before starting. We share the exact wording you can use, how to avoid falling for pretend pressure, and what to do if flexibility actually isn’t possible. Whether you want a week off, a few days, or just a weekend to reset, this episode will help you take it, confidently.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Nina who bought us 10 coffees!“Emma and Sarah! I just landed a new role that comes with a 53% pay increase, amazing benefits, and the chance to build a brand new program from scratch, and I have to give a huge ‘thank you’ to Interview Boss for helping me get there. Your Best Bits framework leveled up how I approach interviews. I already had found great success with the S.T.A.R format, but Best Bits gave me even better direction for which examples to pick and made me understand that I should use my examples to share what I want prospective employers to know about me versus what I think they are trying to learn about me. I also used Best Bits in a previous interview cycle. I got through the final-round, but the role was pulled. Still, I’m pretty sure it was mine and credit Interview Boss for the framework but also for boosting my confidence and helping me make more informed decisions about my application and interview strategy. For the role I just landed I had seven interviews, including four back-to-back interviews in one day with six people. The last that day was a presentation, and it concluded with an executive interview the next week. Some questions were ‘tell me about a time’ and others were ‘what would you do if,’ either way, I found ways to weave in my Best Bits and tell my story. I genuinely loved my last job and manager, but with limited room to grow and uncertainty about the company’s future, I decided to not wait and find out what would happen to me, but take command of my future. While this new role doesn’t come with my previous senior title, the compensation and benefits package more than makes up for it— a reminder that titles aren’t the only marker of progress. I was approached for this role by a former colleague, but I still treated every interview with the utmost respect and like I had something to prove—which I think I did despite being invited to apply. So thank you, Emma and Sarah, for giving me the tools to take command of my career and reach a salary amount that will truly change my family and I’s life. Enjoy the coffee! P.S. I would love an episode on how to track and save best bits over time to reduce the work as you prep for interviews. S5 Ep 15Should I follow up if I think of a better answer AFTER my interview?
POV: you're kicking yourself for going blank or giving a really waffly answer in an interview, only to have an epiphany about what you should have said, once you've left the building! Sound familiar? In this week’s episode, we’re answering a listener DM about whether it's worth following up to redeem yourself. Is it helpful? Is it too late? Will it even make a difference?Emma breaks down what you need to consider before hitting send, while Sarah shares a story about a truck driver who handled this exact conundrum perfectly. If you’ve ever replayed an interview over and over in your head, this one’s for you. We’re diving into regret, recovery, and the power of perspective when things don’t go to plan.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Annelise who bought us 3 coffees!'Emma and Sarah, I have just received an amazing job offer and one of the first things I thought of was "I need to buy them a coffee and let them know about this!!" I've been listening to your podcast since late last year, when I decided to shoot my shot. I really like working at my current company, but there aren't many career development opportunities for me anymore. And your episode on rage applying for new jobs was the extra push I needed to get into that mindset! Last time I had an interview was seven years ago, when I was trying to get an internship in a very competitive market. I went through multiple online tests, cases, presentations, but getting an offer was really hard and I ended up developing some anxiety around interviews. A month ago, when a recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn about an amazing opportunity at a tech company, I didn’t think twice and started listening to all your episodes about the interview process. I went through an interview with HR, an interview with the managers, a slide deck presentation and a final interview with the department's director. And you had episodes for every. Single. Step!! The Best Bits episodes was definitely a game-changer for me, as they are for many people. But I also want to highlight the one about bringing notes to the interviews. It made me more confident to learn that I am not getting tested on my memory during an interview. I used to be afraid of forgetting something important, blanking, or not remembering my questions to ask at the end. This time, I felt more in control and calm going into the interviews because I knew I had some notes to refer to if needed. Thank you for your funny and always down to earth advice. Thank you for keeping me sane when I was freaking out right before an interview or when waiting to hear back. Every time I have the chance, I recommend your podcast to friends and family. S5 Ep 14Are you scared to take credit for your role in a team win? It's time to stop!
If you've ever downplayed your role in a successful project because it was a team effort, this episode is a must listen! Many jobseekers worry about sounding arrogant when discussing a project they were part of in interviews, especially if it led to a big result, like a spike in revenue. But here's the thing: underselling yourself isn't as humble as you think! Owning your part in a shared success isn't just okay, it's essential! In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma share practical advice on how to highlight your impact, while striking the perfect balance between honesty, confidence, and collaboration.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Matilde who bought us 5 coffees!“HI GIRLIIIIIES (huge feminine energy coming your way)! Where should I start? It’s going to be a long one. I’ve been in a professional transition for the past 1.5 years. I was fortunate enough to quit my job and then go back for a few months. I was stuck in a weird place where I was too senior for junior roles, and too junior for senior roles. There is THIS job at THIS place that I’ve been talking about for 4 years now. It’s been such a long time that I felt like a stalker sometimes. And guess what, YES, THIS exact opportunity opened on the market at the perfect time. I applied in early December, and I knew the process would only start in January so what did I do? PREPARE. The thing I was most anxious about is that I’m French, and the position needed to be bilingual. While I do speak English, I’ve never interviewed in English. During the Christmas break, I decided to look for a podcast in English, to train myself to listen and talk in English and wtf do I find? YOU. I spent HOURS listening to your podcast (#1 is the tell me about yourself episodes, and #2 the best bits of course) I practiced SO much, and having the best bits ready was a true blessing. They didn’t ask a question about something? NO PROBLEM - I’m going to tell them anyway. Omg it worked WONDERS. I absolutely SMASHED the interviews, especially the one with the senior director and VP. It took 3 months and 2 new friends (aka you) that don’t even know me (I told you… borderline stalker) but I GOT IT OMG!!! I got the offer this week, for a better salary than I asked, with amazing compensation. I’m so happy so I wanted to let you know. Enjoy the coffees, I wouldn’t drink 5 at a time, it’s risky - but who am I to judge??? P.S because I NEED to know, where does the « oh oh oh oh » of the jingle come from? It kinda sounds like ‘No control’ by One Direction - is this it??? Your new stalker sister, Matilde.”🎥 Check out BRAND NEW free training - Top Interview Tips https://www.interviewboss.com.au/top-interview-tips🏫 To get step by step help with your interview prep on demand check out our Interview Academy https://www.interviewboss.com.au/interview-academy☕ Did our podcast help you out? S5 Ep 13HELP! How can I sneak out of my 9-5 to attend an interview?
Got an interview coming up but stuck in a 9-to-5? You’re not alone. In this week's episode, Sarah and Emma tackle a classic dilemma: how to juggle face-to-face interviews while holding down a full time job. From negotiating interview scheduling, to making the most of flexible work arrangements, or requesting time off strategically, we share how to make yourself available, without raising eyebrows. It's a delicate balancing act, but these tips can help you navigate the situation without jeopardising your current job, just in case things don't go to plan. 🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Jorien who bought us 3 coffees!"“Hi! A few months ago I shared with you how Interview Academy helped me prepare. I ended with how confident I felt about the interview I did, and that even if I didn't get the job, I was still happy with how I did. Well, I didn't get the job. And the next lot of interviews also resulted in me not getting the job. I got better at doing interviews, which was great. I learned a lot. And I kept getting interviews, which was also great but nerve-wracking. The next round of interviews were great and after the second one they called within a few hours to say they chose me. Amazing! Except that I had another interview planned the next day for a job I had been talking about for years. I decided to do that interview and choose afterwards. It seemed like an impossible choice. I couldn't sleep and was so worried. But when I went in for the "dream job" interview, it turned out it wasn't a match at all for me at this moment. So I let them know the same day that I would not proceed and I accepted the job that is a much better match. So what did I learn? First: I'm a bit spoiled as I got so many interviews (in 5 of 9 cases I got an invitation after sending in an application) and I still felt insecure often. It is a hard thing. Second: most interviewers try their best to make you feel comfortable (also in panel interviews). Some don't, and that's really valuable information for you to decide if you want to work there. Third: Prepping really helps, but even with the best prep in the world, you will always get questions you didn't expect. If you are like me and can be too excited: limit your preptime. Thank you so much Sarah and Emma, your podcast and Interview Academy really helped me. Tomorrow is my first day, I am so excited. I also know that in a few years, I might have to do interviews again. S5 Ep 12The feminine urge to add exclamation points
Ever typed “just checking in 😊” or added an extra exclamation point to sound friendly—then worried you sounded unprofessional? You’re not alone. This week’s episode is all about the tricky balance of being warm and respected at work.Inspired by a listener question, Sarah and Emma unpack the pressure (especially on women) to soften their communication—using emojis, exclamation marks, or phrases like “just” and “I think”—and whether it helps or hurts in a professional setting. They explore what the research says, when softening language is actually strategic, and how to edit your emails to strike the perfect tone: polite, warm, and confident. Plus, you’ll get real-life examples and swaps to help you communicate clearly without undermining yourself. If you’ve ever stressed over how your emails come across, this one’s for you.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Wendy who bought us FOUR coffees! “Emma and Sarah, Thank you for your amazing podcast and sense of humour. I had a job interview today and I felt I couldn't have been more prepared for it after listening to all your great advice and preparing for close to a week for the interview. I especially liked your advice on "telling them about yourself" even when they haven't asked you "tell me about yourself". Guess what, he didn't ask me that but I gave him nuggets from my response to "tell me about yourself" anyways! S5 Ep 11Can’t seem to get an interview? Here's your game plan
You’ve been applying for jobs but getting nothing back. Interview advice is great, but what if you’re not even getting interviews?!This week, Sarah and Emma respond to a listener's question about what to do when you’re stuck at the application stage. They unpack what “getting seen” really means and explore all the reasons your applications might be falling flat - from the job market and your resume to how you're approaching the process. They’ll help you figure out if your resume is doing you justice, whether your experience matches the roles you’re going for, and why coffee chats might be the most underrated move in your job search.Plus, how to tell if you’re applying for too few (or too many) jobs - and whether it might be time to bring in some professional help. If you’re stuck and losing confidence, this episode is the pep talk and game plan you’ve been waiting for.🏀 Shoot Your Shot - Shoutout to Ari “Emma and Sarah, I listened to a handful of your episodes during a multi-stage interview process that spanned four months. Last week, I received and accepted an offer for my dream job! I am in a niche field in a midsized US city, so roles like this do not pop up often. To provide some context, I withdrew from my masters program in the final semester about four years ago. It was not on a sustainable path for my mental health or overall well being. I worked in a bike shop for a couple of years before landing a role that became a career building step for me. Now, I’m going to start a new job that I would have deemed unattainable even a year ago. I will be going from a coordinator level to a director position as well.
