Ep 169Barbara DeLeo

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Barbara DeLeo from New Zealand. The Delay, Don’t Deny community has a new home! Go to ginstephens.com/community to join. When we moved our community off of Facebook in March, we chose a platform that we thought would meet our needs and allow us to connect with each other in meaningful ways. Unfortunately, once we all got there, we realized the technology that looked so amazing on the back end actually didn’t function well when members arrived. Their technology was antiquated and simply didn’t work. Ouch. We knew the community deserved something better and immediately started looking for a solution. Well, we found exactly what we were looking for. The new community platform is easy to use, has the features our members asked for, it’s technologically stable (HOORAY!), and it already feels like home. So, if you tried out the Delay, Don’t Deny Social Network and found the technology to be clunky, we promise you won’t be disappointed with the new platform. Go to ginstephens.com/community to learn more and to join. Community has been such an important part of my journey. Join us, so we can be a part of yours. We can’t wait to meet you! Barbara DeLeo is a romance novelist. She shares that she did not struggle with weight until after college. She rigorously exercised, watched what she ate, and followed various diets, but nothing seemed to work. By the time she was fifty, Barbara was burned out from all the extreme workouts and diets. Through the years, Barbara had heard about IF, but thought it was crazy. But when friends encouraged her and her husband to try IF, she thought, "It’s the only thing I haven’t tried, so let's do it!" Barbara researched IF, found The IF Podcast, and listened to every episode! She read, Delay, Don't Deny and The Obesity Code. She dove right into the IF lifestyle, and has not looked back! Two years later, Barbara is down two dress sizes.  Barbara’s advice to new IFers: There’s no hurry with IF. It is a definite shift in thinking, and it will bring you freedom. Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. Ep 168Abby Stadlin

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Abby Stadlin from Cleveland, OH.Gin’s new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder! Gin wants to show you how to become clean(ish) where it counts:  you’ll learn how to eat (mostly) clean and live (mainly) clean as you unlock your body’s natural ability to self-clean.   Instead of aiming for perfection (which is impossible) or changing everything at once (which is hard, and never leads to lasting change), you’ll cut through the confusion, lose the fear, and embrace the freedom that comes from becoming clean(ish). As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you’ll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish). Go to https://www.ginstephens.com/cleanish.html for more information. The book will be released on 1/4/22, but you can preorder now through Amazon or your favorite online book retailer. Preordering is really important, as it gives the publisher an idea of how many books to print.   Abby is the owner of an Ace Hardware. Abby was a lifetime dieter, trying every new diet that came along: from low calorie to low carb, and everything in between. The diet would work, but then Abby would gain back all of the weight she lost. By 2017, Abby reached her highest weight and decided to give up. She thought, "I'm done fighting. I'm just a large girl." But Abby was still unhappy with her weight, and worried about her health. In 2019, she overheard a group of ladies discussing IF. Abby researched 'intermittent fasting,' and found both Delay, Don't Deny, and The Obesity Code. She also joined the DDD Facebook group. Abby began with 16:8, quickly moving to 23:1 within weeks. She has gone from 225 pounds to 182 pounds, which is the smallest she has ever been! Abby's advice to new IFers: "Look to the science behind IF. Join the IF support groups. Listen to the IF podcasts."Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. He began IF in the Summer of 2020, and a year later, his depression has drastically improved. He's also lost 30 pounds!David's advice: If you think you can do it, you definitely can. IF is easier than you think. Our bodies were built to eat this way. David also wrote a book, How Not to Kill Yourself; Ten Tips for Troubled Times. He wrote it to bring hope for those who struggle with depression, and the ones who love them. This also began Katie's cycle of dieting. In 2019, Katie learned about IF from her principal. She began with a 16:8 protocol, but quickly moved to 20:4. She has lost 40 pounds.Katie has experienced clearer skin, a major reduction of inflammation, and less back pain. She is in the process of healing diet mentality, and she loves how IF has freed her from the constant worry about food. Katie's advice: Use an app to track your fasts. Everything is a choice. Whatever you choose, it will have results either today or a year from now.  Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Ep 165Jenni Herchenbach

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Jenni Herchenbach from Omaha, NE. Gin’s new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder! Jenni is a “happily unemployed” occupational therapist and grandmother. Jenni read Delay, Don't Deny in one day, and immediately became a faster. IF came into her life while on a new path to liking herself: "I spent way too many years not liking myself," she shares. Jenni feels that IF would not have worked for her had she not done work on her heart first. Jenni began with a 16:8 protocol, and eventually found that 21:3 was her ‘sweet spot’ for weight loss. At her highest weight, Jenni was 197 pounds. After more than a year of IF, she discovered her 'happy weight' is between 148 to 158 pounds. She has stopped tracking her fasts and weighing and is now just happily living the IF lifestyle. Jenni's advice: "Nail the clean fast. Settle in. IF is not quick weight loss. Ditch the scale, but instead find a dress or pants to be your guide. Take lots of photos, and have someone point out the changes they see you in you!" Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. She then searched for an IF podcast, and found Gin’s and Melanie's, The Intermittent Fasting Podcast. She also read Delay, Don't Deny. In January of 2020, Michaela began her IF journey with 16:8. She eventually moved to 19:5, and currently keeps a 3-4 hour daily window. Michaela has lost 80 pounds, and feels great! Her health has greatly improved. Michaela’s blood pressure and thyroid meds have both been reduced, and she no longer experiences shortness of breath. Michaela encourages others to start with the clean fast, be flexible and eat the things you like. Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at dddsocialnetwork.com.  Jeni never followed diets, but instead accepted that she would always be "big." By the end of nursing school in 2009, her weight climbed to 230 pounds. It was then that she hired a trainer, followed a diet, and managed to lose 30 pounds. But over the years, she gradually gained the weight back. In November of 2019, a friend posted about her IF journey, sharing that she was an upcoming IF Stories podcast guest (Episode 55). This inspired Jeni to try IF, and she began that day! She currently prefers a 20:4 protocol, and has gone from a size 16/18 to a size 6/8. Jeni's health has improved. Her blood pressure is lower, all of her labs are better, her fasting insulin is now 4.9, and she no longer needs GERD medication. Jeni's doctors are thrilled with her progress, and completely support her IF lifestyle.  Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Ep 156Temple

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Temple from Pembroke Pines, FL.Gin’s new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder! As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you’ll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish).Go to https://www.ginstephens.com/cleanish.html for more information. The book will be released on 1/4/22, but you can preorder now through Amazon or your favorite online book retailer. Preordering is really important, as it gives the publisher an idea of how many books to print. Temple is a retired police captain. She dieted her entire life, beginning at just 15 years-old. In January of 2019, Temple found IF after searching for a way to lose weight. She says, "I was sick and tired of being sick and tired."  Obesity runs in her family, along with Type 2 Diabetes, and Temple was ready to change the path she was on. She read The Obesity Code, Delay, Don't Deny and Fast Feast Repeat, and instantly made IF her new lifestyle. Her favorite protocol is 22:2, but she varies it from time to time. IF has greatly improved her health! Temple’s hot flashes and skin tags are gone, and her food intolerances and acid reflux have both disappeared. Temple has lost four sizes, going from a size 20 to a size 16.  Temple exclaims, "IF is the only thing that has been consistently consistent in my life. I will trust and depend on it today, tomorrow, forever."  Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at dddsocialnetwork.com.  Joanna learned of intermittent fasting from a podcast in 2015. The way it was described, Joanna got the idea that IF was only for men, something that was medical, it took too much discipline, and was for only people who didn't like food. "I decided IF was not for me," and she carried on with life. During the pandemic that began in March of 2020, Joanna found she was putting on weight. Knowing she had to do something, she recalled IF and did some new research. She came across Delay, Don't Deny, Fast Feast Repeat, and The Obesity Code, and read all three. In July of 2020, Joanna began with 20:4, and she has never looked back. Her husband also joined her with IF. He had struggled with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) for many years, trying several things to manage it. But within three days of IF, his IBS was gone! Joanna has lost roughly 17 pounds, going from 170 to 153. She has loads of energy and feels great! IF is simply a part of her life now.  The advice Joanna would give new IFers: Have patience! It may take a couple months to figure it all out. You may find Joanna Penn at: TheCreativePenn.com and The Creative Penn Podcast Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Elizabeth decided to follow in her mom’s footsteps, beginning in 7th grade. In January of 2020, a close friend shared IF with her, and Elizabeth began with 16:8. She was feeling great and losing weight until the pandemic hit in March.  By the end of April, she had gained back everything she lost. Knowing IF was her lifestyle, and committed to getting back to feeling great, Elizabeth gradually shortened her window and moved to a one meal a day approach. To date, Elizabeth has lost 20 pounds, going from 185 to 165. Instead of a goal weight, she has decided: "to like what I see in pictures." She knows that her body will settle on the right weight, so she is trusting the process. For Elizabeth, IF is a peaceful way to live. The advice Elizabeth would give new IFers: Take it day by day. IF is like a muscle--the more you do it, the better you become! Take pictures and measurements to track progress. They started dieting together, beginning in high school, and tried countless plans over the years. In May of 2019, Cherie decided to pray and fast once a week for a relative. A month later, she had lost weight, and knew there was something to fasting. She shared this with Shannon, and after some research, she found the IF Stories podcast. They both began IF in June of 2019. Two years later, Shannon has lost 60 pounds, going from 220 pounds to 150 pounds. Cherie has lost 30 pounds, going from 170 pounds to 130 pounds. Cherie's knee pain and aches have disappeared. Shannon's plantar fasciitis and headaches are completely gone, and they both have a great deal of energy. The advice they'd give to new IFers: Cherie says, "Consistency is key. Fast every day. Use an app. It gets easy." Shannon says,"Keep it simple. Don't overcomplicate it. One day, one fast at a time." Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. Ep 146Robin January

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Robin January from Fayetteville, AR.Let me tell you about the Delay, Don’t Deny Social Network! Besides the freedom of IF, community is what I most want to offer the world. Instead of relying on the big social network most of us have been on for years, we now have a community that is completely separate and just for us. Members of the DDD Social Network have access to all episodes of Intermittent Fasting Stories within the DDDSN platform, ad-free! That’s just one reason to join. Visit dddsocialnetwork.com to see what else we offer in our membership community. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at dddsocialnetwork.com. Robin works at a university lab in the Food Science Department. In the summer of 2018, Robin was diagnosed with a torn artery in her neck which resulted in several mini-strokes. She then developed a brain aneurysm. Her doctor immediately ordered her to go on bed rest for the next four months, with the warning “do not gain weight.”That same summer, Robin's mother had her watch a talk show segment on IF. Robin's response: "IF is a fancy word for starvation." But as she began to gain weight, Robin decided to give IF a try. For the first several months, Robin added cream to her coffee, having no knowledge of the clean fast. Robin stumbled upon Delay, Don't Deny, and learned about the clean fast. The transition to the clean fast made the fast easy. Robin eventually moved to a morning eating window. She currently follows 20:4, with a weekly longer fast. She has lost 25 pounds, going from a size 14 to a size 6. Robin's health has radically improved. Her brain aneurysm has healed. Her psoriasis, which covered her entire body, is now almost gone completely. She also has improved gum health after a 14-year battle with gum disease. Robin's advice to new IFers: "Find a reason to fast that is completely independent of weight loss. Look for small victories. Be content with health benefits if you're not losing weight at first. Don't be afraid to try things that seem scary."Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. The turning point came for her while on a trip to New York with her husband. A woman on their Brooklyn Bridge tour had to stop because she was out of breath and could not continue. The entire group had to wait for her, and Cynthia realized she herself was on her way to the same scenario. It was time do something different. Her doctor had suggested intermittent fasting as a way to lose weight, and Cynthia began immediately once they returned. At first, Beth thought it sounded crazy, but she decided to give it a shot. She eased her way into IF, and never had a set window. Varying her fasts has made IF feel like a flexible lifestyle. Beth has lost 35 pounds, and easily maintains within a comfortable weight range. Her relationship with food has completely changed. She grew up in a religion where children were required to dry fast (no food or water) for 24 hours, once year. This was looked upon as a 'rite of passage,' and Anne-Lise did her first dry fast at age seven. Leaving this religion in her twenties, she never fasted again. In 2017, Anne-Lise officiated her son's wedding. Looking at pictures, she did not recognize herself. At 230 pounds, she realized it was time to do something about it. She found Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code and followed a Keto diet with a 16:8 IF protocol. Anne-Lise eventually lost 65 pounds, but in dealing with some emotional issues in her life, gained back 55 pounds. This was discouraging! In March of 2020, Anne-Lise joined a Keto Facebook group, and found Delay, Don't Deny from another member. She quickly read it and listened to the IF Stories Podcast. She began with a 19:5 protocol, but this time without restrictions. After a year of this, she feels healthy and vibrant and strong.Anne-Lise's NSVs: "Food finally became permissible to enjoy, and I trust my body now." She has compassion with herself, and has healed her relationship with food, discovering the joy of eating. She followed it yet again the following Summer, then stopped, and yet again gained back all the weight. In April of 2019, June decided to make IF a lifestyle. She found Delay, Don't Deny, and realized she had not been fasting clean. Switching to the clean fast, she followed 16:8, and finally found IF to be relatively easy! She has lost almost 25 pounds, going from the upper 140s to the mid 120s. She currently follows 18-19 hour fasts, including some 24 hour fasts, and she throws in the occasional longer fast. Her mood and mental clarity have both greatly improved, and she's also lost skin tags! When June shared IF with Sarah, Sarah thought: "There's no way I could do that. I need my morning smoothie!" But after watching her mother lose weight with IF, and seeing all of the health benefits that came with it, Sarah was willing to give IF a try. She read Delay, Don't Deny, and began IF with 16:8, in December of 2019. She had suffered from severe eczema, and dermatologists had been unable to cure it. But with IF, she was able to pinpoint the cause. At this point, her eczema is almost completely gone! Sarah also feels like she is healing her gut. She has lost 10 pounds, and currently follows 20-22 hour daily fasts. The advice June would give to new IFers: Take pictures and measurements. It's never too late to get healthy. Sarah's advice: Start slow, and build that fasting muscle. Be consistent. It gets easier! Ep 130Suzanne Stone

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Suzanne Stone from Tarzana, CA.This episode is brought to you by Ritual. You deserve to know what’s in your multivitamin. That’s why Ritual is offering my listeners 10% off during your first 3 months. Visit ritual.com/IFSTORIES to start your Ritual today! Suzanne shares that she began her first diet at age ten. Her father, worried she would be overweight as an adult, put her on a low carb diet. Suzanne recalls, "My father made me do 500 fast jump ropes every day. He would sit there and count every one of them." Years of diet plans, counting calories, and diet pills followed. She would lose, then eventually gain everything back. Suzanne was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2012 and put on thyroid medication. Her thyroid needed to be removed, but before surgery, her doctor gave her an iodine treatment. She was also taken off her thyroid medication for six weeks. This whole process was done twice, causing a 20-pound weight gain each time, along with severe lethargy and major inflammation. After a long recovery, she tried various diets to lose the weight, but struggled to go back to the diets that were once successful.  In March of 2019, her friend Fred (also a DDD Facebook group moderator) shared about intermittent fasting on Facebook. She had heard about IF from another friend, but thought it sounded crazy! Desperate for something to help with her severe allergies, Suzanne decided to give IF a try. She read Delay, Don't Deny and The Obesity Code, and began with a 16:8 protocol.Almost two years later, Suzanne has lost 45 pounds. She's gone from a size 14 to a size 6. Her health has greatly improved. She takes very little allergy and thyroid medication now, and no longer needs her inhaler. She has mental clarity, feels more confident, and craves healthier foods. Suzanne started a Facebook group called A Valley Girl's Guide to Intermittent Fasting. The advice she'd give to new IFers: Learn patience. Diet mentality takes a lot of time to change. You have to really work hard to get past it. Weight loss won't be fast. It is a lifestyle, not a diet. When you change the way you look at it, then you're not as worried when it doesn't happen fast! Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. As a teenager, she remembers feeling better when she skipped breakfast, because she wasn't ever hungry for it. But her mother always made a huge feast, and Michelle was not allowed to throw away food...so, she ate breakfast anyway. She was a healthy weight in high school and college, and very active in sports. After three children and then a divorce, however, Michelle struggled with her weight. She tried countless diets, cleanses and detoxes. By 2013, she asked herself: "What can I do to lose weight?" Recalling how great she felt as teenager by skipping breakfast and only eating dinner, she returned to this way of eating. At the time, Michelle did not know she was doing intermittent fasting. She dropped 40 pounds, but her family worried she was starving herself. Without the scientific knowledge behind IF, Michelle went back to eating all day long, gaining everything back (plus more). Six long years of more diets, cleanses, and detoxes followed.By January of 2020, Michelle felt hopeless. "I've got to find something," she told herself. While searching online for the next diet, she came across Delay, Don't Deny and ordered it. The book made so much sense to her, and Michelle held tight to three gems of wisdom, referring to these as Gin's Gems. The health benefits Michelle has experienced are clearer skin, a brightness in her eyes, alertness, and mental clarity. Prior to IF, her blood work showed pre-hypertension and high glucose, both of which are now in the normal range. Her cholesterol is down 30 points and her plantar fasciitis is gone! Michelle has lost 50 pounds, going from 245 pounds to 195 pounds. The advice Michelle would give new IFers: "Educate yourself on IF. Know what's happening in your body if you don't see it at first. Trust and enjoy the process! Health is your greatest wealth." Get Gin’s books, including her latest New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. She trained for marathons which also helped, but the weight loss was very difficult to maintain. In February of 2019, Roxi found IF through a friend from work. She had never heard of IF, and thought: "That doesn't sound healthy!" But her friend convinced her to read Delay, Don't Deny, and Roxi read it between patients that very day! She tried her first fast of 16:8, and found it was easy. She then dove into her own IF research, watching Dr. Jason Fung's videos on IF. The scientific research behind IF was thrilling to Roxi, and she was so hopeful to find this new lifestyle. Roxi quickly went from a 16:8 protocol to 20:4, then found 22:2 was her "sweet spot" for weight loss. She lost 20 pounds in her first year of IF, her health greatly improving. She reversed her fatty liver, and her fasting glucose went from 127 to 88. Her A1C went from 6.1 to 4.7, which meant she was no longer pre-diabetic! "Delay, Don't Deny changed my life, and it will always have a very special place in my life," she shares.Roxi has lost 32 pounds so far, going from 194 pounds to 162 pounds, and from a size 20W to a size 10. In May of 2020, Roxi read Gin's latest book, Fast Feast Repeat. She learned about ADF (Alternate Day Fasting) and decided to switch up her IF routine. Ep 123Jason Boetcher

In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Jason Boetcher. Jason is a pastor from Kansas City, KS.This episode is brought to you by Green Chef! Green Chef is a USDA certified organic company that makes eating well easy and affordable with plans to fit every lifestyle. Gin’s favorite? The Balanced Living plan. Go to greenchef.com/ifstories90 and use promo code ifstories90 to get $90 off. Jason is a Lutheran pastor. He tried many diets over the years, losing 20 pounds with each one. He first heard about IF on the Dr. Oz Show, though he was already familiar with spiritual fasts. Through some research, Jason found Delay, Don't Deny, and the IF Stories Podcast. In January of 2019, he began with a 20:4 protocol, but found he ate too much, and so he switched to 23:1. By the fall of that same year, he had lost 50 pounds, weighing 180 pounds. But life was about to change.Jason had a persistent cold that would not go away, and one day he found himself unable to breathe while playing soccer. After having a chest x-ray and CT scan, his doctor found an aggressive tumor growing near his esophagus. He was put on steroids and began chemotherapy, which caused Jason to lose his sense of taste for everything...but sugar. He began to eat all day long, which led to a weight gain of 45 pounds. In March of 2020, the treatments were completed and the tumor was gone! Jason was desperate to get back to IF, but after experiencing some fainting spells, he needed to wait. By May of 2020, Jason was able to fast again. Nicole began IF with 16:8, and immediately had more energy. She shares: "I didn't know I could feel better, and then I did!" Everything felt instantly clearer to Nicole, as a "new layer had been removed" in her life. Nicole has a gluten allergy and eats fairly low carb to feel her best. Because "food is my job," a 16:8 protocol allows Nicole to taste the beautiful dishes she makes for her clients. She has gone from 225 pounds to 200 pounds, and from a size 12 to a size 8. Instead of a goal weight, Nicole has a goal body fat percentage. Through her IF journey, she has done a great deal of inner work, healing old beliefs she held true about her weight and acceptance. She also uses daily meditation.Nicole's book Intermittent Fasting Cookbook is now available. It is a celebration of food, different methods of IF, finding the right foods for your body, eating the most nutrient dense foods, and more than 80 delicious recipes! The advice Nicole would give new IFers: "IF is going to change your life, you're just going to need to give it a little bit of time. She continued this until college. But once she began eating normally again, she could not stop. Her anorexia then turned to bulimia, and as a result, Lisa gained 20 pounds. She feels that her disordered eating was directly connected to her Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar Disorder is "a disorder associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs." Once properly diagnosed, medicated, and in therapy, Lisa felt she could reclaim her life. She finally had hope.Lisa and her husband are long distance runners and found IF through their running community. She began with keto, then transitioned to a less restrictive low carb approach coupled with IF. She follows OMAD (One Meal a Day). The health benefits Lisa has experienced are numerous! She has seen a huge reduction of inflammation, and both her chronic headaches and plantar fasciitis are gone. She is less anxious, and her recovery time from long runs has markedly improved. Lisa has gone from 160 pounds to 115 pounds, and is now at a healthy weight. The advice she'd give to new IFers: "Ease into IF. Begin with 16:8. Skip breakfast. Stop comparing yourself. Everyone is individual. IF is like a muscle. You have to train it. Don't think of IF as a punishment, think of it as a gift." Get Gin’s books, including her latest New York Times Bestseller, Fast.
