Nadim was a successful entrepreneur, happily married, and with two wonderful children. But the dream life was shattered when he took his daughter Natasha and her best friend on holiday to France. Tragically, Natasha had an anaphylactic reaction shortly after takeoff after ingesting sesame seeds in her sandwich, from which she never recovered. Subsequently, Nadim and his wife Tanya founded the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, and their campaigning - for which they were both awarded an OBE by the Queen - has led to changes in the law. Nadim’s journey to faith through this horrendous experience is deeply touching, and God has opened doors of real influence and opportunity for him to witness gently to the Prince of Peace in many different contexts. Frankly Virginia’s story is nuts. Standing up to the Romanian dictator Ceaucescu, she used her skills and courage as a lawyer to defend persecuted Christians and fight for religious freedom. She was tortured repeatedly - yet even blessed her abusers as they did so, who on occasion turned away with tears in their eyes. And then one day a hired assassin drew his gun in her office and the game was up! Whilst his father was a hard-working bus driver, Brian (with his sister) built the nation’s biggest bus company, Stagecoach. It reached FTSE 100 status, and was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1993, valued at £134million. Shane’s life was so spectacularly destructive, dark and violent that he was always likely to end up in a maximum security prison, where he was required to be accompanied by seven prison guards in riot gear just to leave his cell. The turnaround in his life beggars belief. His joy in reliving the miraculous transformation was so beautiful (and funny!). There is always hope. As the boss of the largest of the three Divisions of the UK Field Army, Major General Tim Cross commanded around 30,000 men and women at one stage, having graduated through the ranks and serving in conflicts ranging from Northern Ireland to Kosovo and Iraq. I love the fact that the head of an atheists’ association in Beirut asked Lukas to take it on, as the person he most trusted! That further enhanced Lukas’ reach into the disaffected youth scene, with beautiful stories of radical Muslims being exposed to love in action and coherent debates softening antagonistic cynics. From outgrowing his living room to establishing a coffee shop to which therapists unknown to Lukas refer their patients because ‘that’s where you’ll get better’, his reasoned and loving approach to anyone and everyone is bearing much fruit. Overcoming the carnage of hideous family brokenness and addiction, Uwe’s journey through alcohol, drugs and gambling to a place of national prominence in the political space is nothing short of miraculous. In 1966, Jackie Pullinger left the UK on a boat, aged 22 and with just £10 in her pocket, not knowing where she’d get off. Docking in Hong Kong, she sensed God saying that was the place. Her work in the Walled City of Kowloon saw triad gang members come to faith, girls rescued out of brothels, and thousands of drug addicts over the ensuing decades being set free. That story was told in the best-selling ‘Chasing the Dragon’, and she’s still in Hong Kong with a network of faithful workers, ministering to many more broken people, living by faith and trusting God to provide for their needs. Steve Legg died a few days ago. This interview with him and Carl Beech was recorded early last summer. They are both hilarious, passionate for people, and want to seize every opportunity to share their Ultimate Hope with as many people as possible. At the time of recording, Steve had been given a terminal cancer diagnosis with just a couple of months to live, so estimated the doctor; but Steve was praying for his healing. Whereas although Carl is suffering with degenerative Parkinson’s disease, he has the firm conviction that he’s not to pray for healing, but rather accept the journey over the coming years and bring glory to God through the suffering. Carl’s condition has progressed significantly since, but he is still doing beautiful things (see below). Update - Richard has now graduated to glory. I'm so pleased we were able to release this before he died, he would be thrilled to hear about the impact it has already made. My dear friend Richard will any day now be graduating to glory, which is why I’ve brought this forward. It was only recorded a fortnight ago but things have progressed fast, and I’d love him to have the pleasure perhaps of listening to this and knowing it has blessed and challenged us before he breathes his last this side of the veil. His body is ravaged and weakened by years of battling cancer, but his spirit is strong, and his ebbing life is a radical challenge to all of us of what being generous might look like.
