Ep 27027: Happily Retired in Their 40s by Spending Less | Tim and Amy Rutherford
Financially independent couple, Tim and Amy Rutherford tell us how they retired in their 40s by spending less and have found happiness. Guest Biography Tim and Amy met in colorful Colorado in 2016. Although they tracked every penny spent, in retrospect, they were "mindless spenders" because they weren't concerned about the big dollars flowing out of their bank account. They felt like their financial health was good because they weren't in debt (other than a mortgage) and were maxing out their 401ks while adding to savings and investment accounts at a steady pace. Even so, they spent an average of $115,000 per year for many years. This number didn't include income taxes, savings or payments to their mortgage principal. Their initial retirement analysis assumed spending of $120,000 a year. They had an epiphany in 2014. Spending less meant Tim and Amy didn't have to work as long. Cutting back made them happier and kept moving up their target retirement date. By living with less, they could say goodbye to their stressful careers in 2015. From the beginning of our relationship, Tim and Amy treasured experiences over things. As they continue to downsize, their new life is filled with fun, frugal (or free!), fulfilling activities that bring them happiness. They spend less time acquiring, maintaining, upgrading, insuring, and thinking about material things. While it may be cliché, less truly is more. In 2016, they spent $43,000. That year, they took 3 international vacations and traveled (by plane) around the US several times. Tim had back surgery that year which meant a $6,000 deductible. So, $43,000 isn't lean or mean. There's fat in there, too. They continue to seek and find fun and creative ways to further reduce their spending. Tim and Amy are re-engineering their new lives with purpose. Their path includes more travel and embracing a healthier lifestyle. These days, they are active volunteers, house sitters, and travelers. They blog at www.GoWithLess.com, writing about how they retired in their 40s and how they plan to stay there. Ep 25025: Increasing Sales by Answering Customers' Questions | Marcus Sheridan
Inbound marketing saved Marcus Sheridan's business, his family's finances, and brought him to the place where he is today -- a successful business owner, keynote speaker, and author. We dig into the mindset it takes to be successful in marketing/sales and more. Guest Biography Called a "web marketing guru" by the New York Times, the Story of how Marcus Sheridan was able to save his swimming pool company, River Pools, from the economic crash of 2008 has been featured in multiple books, publications, and stories around the world—and is also the inspiration for his newest book, "They Ask, You Answer," which was dubbed the #1 marketing book to read in 2017 by Mashable. Known for his incredibly unique ability to engage live audiences, Sheridan has become a highly sought after global speaker and consultant in the digital sales and marketing space, working with hundreds of business and brands alike to become the most trusted voice of their industry while navigating the ultra-fast rate of change occurring within consumers and buyers today. No one ever says, "When I grow up, I want to be a pool guy." Neither did Marcus Sheridan when he was a youth being raised in the small town of Callao, Virginia. But that's exactly what he was for 10 years of his life—a decade that would go on to become the foundation of his incredible "They Ask, You Answer" story, one where his swimming pool company would go from near bankruptcy to one of the most successful pool builders in the entire country while being featured in multiple best-selling books, the New York Times, and many other publications. For Sheridan though, one can trace his success as a business and communications thought-leader today back to his time spent as a missionary for his church, when he lived in Chile for two years from 1997-1999. During this time there, Sheridan, who had never spoken Spanish and up to that point had a fear of public speaking, was constantly put in positions to speak to and teach large audiences. Eventually, Sheridan's fear for public speaking would turn into a strength. By the end of his mission, he realized he had a knack for explaining complex subjects in a way audiences could easily understand and relate to them. Furthermore, he could see that audiences seemed to resonate with his unique, interactive speaking style, something he would end up using full time as a professional speaker 15 years later. After his mission, Sheridan married his high school sweetheart, Nikki, and finished his degree at West Virginia University. While looking for his first post-college job, Sheridan was approached by two close friends from home who had just started a swimming pool company—River Pools and Spas. Upon asking him to be the first employee of their fledgling company, Sheridan responded: "Sure, at least until I find my 'real' job." The rest, as they say, is history. Sheridan's two friends invited him to join them as owners 6 months later, and for the next decade, he would help River Pools and Spas find the ultimate success it did. With such success, Sheridan started his personal blog, The Sales Lion in 2009. By focusing on an array of sales, marketing, and personal development issues—Sheridan developed a large following and eventually, the site was recognized as one of the top 10 Social Media sites on the web. The momentum with The Sales Lion naturally led to speaking and business opportunities for Sheridan, where today, he and his team are internationally known for keynotes, workshops, sales/marketing coaching, and HubSpot training. But outside of all this, the thing that means most to Sheridan remains the marriage he has to his wife (Nikki) of 15 years and their 4 children: Danielle, JT, Larsen, and Casey. In fact, if you happen to run into Marcus at a conference or event, there is a very good chance one of these 5 is right there with him. Ep 20020: Inspiring Growth Story of Maui Brewing Company | Garrett Marrero
Garrett Marrero and Melanie Oxley poured determination and long hours into building Maui Brewing Company and were named 2017's Small Business Association's Small Business Persons of the Year. Guest Biography Garrett Marrero is Co-founder & CEO of Maui Brewing Co. Garrett makes sure to drink the local beer everywhere he travels. For him, great beer reveals elements of the personality of a place and, hopefully, reflects a vibrant part of the local economy. It's also the reason why, on his first visit to Maui in 2003, Marrero refused to accept the fact that Maui's "local" beer was actually made on the U.S. mainland and shipped to the island. An investment consultant with bachelor's degrees in economics and international relations, and an associate's degree in finance, he recognized an opportunity to create a niche product in an untapped market. A beach kid from San Diego, he also saw in Maui a chance to live near some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Garrett and his wife Melanie opened Maui Brewing Co. in January 2005 with a seven-barrel brewpub and 30 employees in the West Maui community of Kahana. Over a decade later, Maui Brewing is Hawai'i's largest craft brewer and one of its fastest-growing companies, employing more than 400 people, producing 53,000 barrels a year, and retailing its beers in 23 states and 10 countries. Ep 12012: Outspoken Advocate for Civil Rights in the Episcopal Church | John Shelby Spong
John Shelby Spong, whose books have sold more than a million copies, was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, NJ for 24 years. Guest Biography John Shelby Spong, whose books have sold more than a million copies, was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark for 24 years before his retirement in 2001. Many of the views that once turned the former Episcopal bishop into a lightning rod are now regarded as so matter-of-fact that they barely garner much notice: ordaining gay clergy, blessing same-sex marriages, or having a female presiding bishop. His admirers acclaim him as a teaching bishop who makes contemporary theology accessible to the ordinary layperson — he's considered the champion of an inclusive faith by many, both inside and outside the Christian church. In one of his recent books, The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible's Texts of Hate to Discover the God of Love (San Francisco: HarperOne, 2005), this visionary thinker seeks to introduce readers to a proper way to engage the holy book of the Judeo-Christian tradition. A committed Christian who has spent a lifetime studying the Bible and whose life has been deeply shaped by it, Bishop Spong says he was not interested in Bible bashing. "I come to this interpretive task not as an enemy of Christianity," he says. "I am not even a disillusioned former Christian, as some of my scholar-friends identify themselves. I am a believer who knows and loves the Bible deeply. But I also recognize that parts of it have been used to undergird prejudices and to mask violence." A visiting lecturer at Harvard and at universities and churches worldwide, Bishop Spong delivers more than 200 public lectures each year to standing-room-only crowds. His bestselling books include Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, A New Christianity for a New World, Why Christianity Must Change or Die, and Here I Stand. Bishop Spong's extensive media appearances include a profile segment on 60 Minutes as well as appearances on Good Morning America, Fox News Live, Politically Incorrect, Larry King Live, The O'Reilly Factor, William F. Buckley's Firing Line, and Extra. Bishop Spong and his wife, Christine Mary Spong, have five children and six grandchildren. They live in New Jersey. Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/012 Links www.johnshelbyspong.com Facebook Twitter Instagram In this episode, you will learn: How growing up poor in North Carolina shaped his views and compelled him to fight for what he believes. New Orleans native David Augustine, aka Dee-1, didn't start rapping until he was enrolled at Louisiana State University, but he proved to be a quick study. He released his first two mixtapes during the mid-2000s. The year he graduated from LSU and began teaching mathematics at a middle school, he released his third mixtape. In 2009, the same year he opted to stop teaching and focus on music, he self-released David & Goliath, his proper debut album, throughout which he maintained his down to earth underdog approach. Several additional mixtape releases followed, and his profile continually grew; 2012's The Focus Tape alone featured collaborations with Killer Mike, Mannie Fresh, and Juvenile. Dee-1 has toured the country with chart topping and Grammy award winning artists such as Macklemore, Lupe Fiasco, Lecrae, and PJ Morton. Most recently, he has headlined his own 30 city nationwide tour. Dee-1's public profile skyrocketed due to his viral hit, the student loan anthem "Sallie Mae Back." After receiving a substantial advance from signing his first major record deal, Dee-1 made a conscious decision not to buy a new car, a big house, or some expensive jewelry, he decided to pay off his student loan. He prides himself on being debt free and to be a rapper responsible for a hit song that is highlighting financial freedom and a tangible message, is just icing on the cake for the New Orleans native. The music has been the change in my life. The lyrics I write and the music that I compose is about my journey through the struggles that I have conquered. Ep 3003: Transforming a Passion for Ping Pong into Big Business | Franck Raharinosy
Meet Franck Raharinosy, an entrepreneur and ping pong player who has worked in event production, media, fashion, hospitality, writing, and film. When talking to him, it doesn't take long to realize that passion drives his actions, and he strives to make a positive difference in the world. He co-founded SPiN ping pong social clubs with best friend Jonathan Bricklin, Andrew Gordon, and Susan Sarandon. Guest Biography Franck Raharinosy is a socially-driven entrepreneur and co-founder of the ping-pong social club, SPiN. "If you're a ping-pong fanatic, this is your spot" hails the Examiner, while the New York Times describes SPiN as a "relaxing home away from home." In 2009, Franck turned his passion and love for ping-pong (a love so deep he even trained for the 2012 Olympic games) into a playful, yet successful, career. A self-titled "Naked Ping-Pong" loft party for friends (no one was naked, by the way) sparked the idea for the ping-pong social club, where everyone from grandmothers, to 7 year-olds, to Drake, to Bieber, to Prince, has picked up a paddle. With locations across the United States, SPiN continues to grow, creating a place to socialize, celebrate, and connect through a game that transcends age, gender, and boundaries. Before SPiN, Franck pursued a successful career in filmmaking and fashion. Franck grew up between France, Reunion Island and Madagascar and has called New York home for the past 20 years. He graduated with a degree in marketing and business management from the Ecole de Gestion et de Commerce on the tiny island of the Indian Ocean, Reunion. Driven by passion and curiosity, Franck has managed to build a life out of turning his passion and purpose into business ideas that span genres. SPiN, his most recent business venture, is a ping-pong club that was inspired by his never-satiable love for sports and competition, as well as connection. What started as an idea for a party in 2006, has turned into brick and mortar ping-pong clubs sprouting up across the United States, where club-goers can indulge their own love for sports and play. Franck's appreciation for style and sportswear motivated him to design and sell his own fashion label to Barney's in the early 2000's. Franck has produced award-winning documentaries like The Entrepreneur and Waiting for Mamu and self-published a book of creative writing in 2014. Franck recently completed a screenplay inspired by his personal journey and has been acting and collaborating with some inspiring filmmakers. Franck's career far outshines what he dreamed it could possibly look like as a child growing up between Reunion Island, Madagascar and France. Ep 1001: Playing Guitar for the Love and the Money Followed | Jim Kimo West
Today, I'm speaking with guitarist Jim Kimo West. Now I grew up watching Late Night with David Letterman in the early 90s. I've always had this understanding that the best musicians were those like Paul Shaffer and the World's Most Dangerous Band because they could perform at the highest level with any musical guest covering all genres. It's in the same light that I have such high regard for Kimo. He great at what does and he plays from the heart. If you do not know him, he has played along side the king of parody Weird Al Yankovic for over 35 years. He can pull off an Eddie Van Halen guitar solo with ease (as heard in Eat It), then followed by a spot on Green Day guitar tone (as heard in Canadian Idiot.) If that weren't enough, he's just as proficient covering the Back Street Boys, Lady Gaga, and Don McLean. I've seen him rap in the style of Chamillionaire on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. As a guitarist myself, I'm kind of a sucker for listening to creatives talk about their work – perhaps because it's so different from my desk job. I also appreciate sitting down with Kimo because of his very unique career path to success. His band is truly like no other. His band has sold more than 12 million albums, recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows around the world. Kimo is also a prolific and respected Hawaiian "slack key" guitar artist. If you;ve seen the Oscar-winning film, "The Descendants" you have experienced this great acoustic guitar tradition. He's a two-time winner of the LA Treasures Award. In this interview we talk about money, music, taking risks, and what motivates him to be the best musician he can be. Let's get inspired with Jim Kimo West. Guest Biography Jim "Kimo" West first visited Hana, Maui in 1985, after a long summer on the road as guitarist for famed musical satirist, "Weird Al" Yankovic. As the sounds of Gabby Pahinui, the Sons of Hawai'i, Sonny Chillingworth, The Sunday Manoa, and others, played on the turntable, he jammed along for fun and relaxation. Already a devotee of open tunings, he was immediately drawn to the gentle rhythms of ki ho 'alu (slack key guitar) and soon began writing his own songs. The rich physical and cultural landscape of the Hana Coast has provided the inspiration for many of his compositions. While always retaining the heartfelt essence of traditional slack key, Jim "Kimo" West brings much of his own musical heritage to his original ki ho'alu instrumentals. His style can best be described as "nahenahe", meaning "soft, sweet or gentle voice", a fusion of old and new but still rooted deeply in tradition. Jim lives in Los Angeles where he writes and produces music for film and television. His music has graced feature films and TV shows on all the major networks and cable channels and his slack key compositions have been featured on National Public Radio, Honda TV spots as well as the Disney Channel . He travels regularly to the islands to perform, relax and visit with his "ohana". He also performs slack key concerts around the mainland US, especially in the Southern California area, and at selected private events.
