S10 Ep 25S10-Ep25: Why Amazon Web Services’ VP Uses AI to Put People First
Guest: Dave Levy, Vice President of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Worldwide Public Sector (WWPS) AI is all the buzz — but how do you lead your team through all the noise to find what works for you? Dave Levy clears the noise in this episode. So is education, including growing the talent pool to meet demand! Here's what Dave and Maureen cover: Why “inventing” your own AI apps can be better in the long run than using a popular off-the-shelf system; Why Amazon is willing to invest heavily in free AI and IT training and education programs for the public; and The importance of having at least one leader on your board or in your C-suite who knows enough to safely spearhead your AI (and tech) efforts. S10 Ep 28S10-Ep23: How Missing Ethics Makes a Mess of Organizations

Danièle Henkel sees love in many ways: from passion for your work to genuine respect for the people around you. It’s another facet in building trust; in this case, though, the trust is in people rather than institutions. In a world where leaders often take the quick path – and its ethical shortcuts – to achieve success, Danièle’s take on trust and authenticity in the C-suite is enormously refreshing. She shares her personal journey, from her early days in Morocco to running a successful company in Canada – and the lessons that journey taught her. S6 Ep 9S6-Ep10: Leading Beautifully
Guest: Nancy Adler, S. Bronfman Chair in Management at McGill University There’s not just an art to leadership; art improves leadership! That’s the core point of Dr. Nancy Adler’s discussion in this episode. A consultant and professor at McGill University, she’s found that art enables leaders to shift perspectives more readily, thus seeing solutions more effectively. That broadness of thought is more critical than ever: in the emerging business climate, what a leader knows is becoming far less relevant than the leader’s ability to shift perspectives and continually learn new suites of knowledge and skills. Here's what Nancy and Maureen cover: Why the vaunted MBA is becoming far less relevant in the C-suite; Why leadership is an active verb – and why leadership titles are nouns losing their impact; and How a pizza box became the most effective communication tool to break through a Congressman’s barriers. S5 Ep 11S5-Ep11: More Women on Boards
Guests: Marlene Janzen Le Ber and Lynne E. Devnew (Researchers at Brescia University College & University of Phoenix) We judge female leaders differently than men; we’ll decry a woman exec displaying the exact same behavior as a male. The challenges keeping women from the C-suite and board room are systemic and complex – but the process really starts at the very beginning: how women aspire to and define leadership itself! We’re making progress: women held just over 30% of Fortune 500 board seats in 2022. That’s up from just 22.2% in 2017. With women comprising roughly half of humanity, there’s still work to be done. That’s what guests Marlene Janzen Le Ber and Lynne E. Devnew discuss with host Maureen Metcalf in this episode. From differences in how men and women express anger to how to promote (or stay quiet about) their own successes, you’ll learn about the research of boosting the number of women in the boardroom – and boosting your own career! S5 Ep 8S5-Ep8: Democracy on the Run
Are leaders letting democracy die? Less than half of the world’s nations are full-fledged democracies today. That’s down from just 20 years ago. Part of the problem is a nation’s democratic death usually isn’t dramatic or sudden; it’s often a series of subtler, slower moves such as only appointing loyalists to cabinet posts and judgeships, or threatening the press if coverage isn’t towing the party line. How does this happen in leadership? In this episode, three international thought leaders—Matt Qvortrup, Veronika Anghel, and Mike Hardy—discuss how a growing number of despots, dictators, and demagogues have finessed techniques to undermine democracy…and leadership strategies to strengthen democracies against them. S10 Ep 8S10-Ep8: Donatos Pizza’s CEO Offers His Better Ingredients for Better Leadership
Guest: Tom Krouse Lots of leaders claim their products are made with love. Donatos Pizza means it: they practice Agape Capitalism. As CEO Tom Krouse explains in this episode, Agape Capitalism puts a love of humanity at the center of their company processes and revenue generation. Its origins are rooted in founder Jim Grote’s observations as a teen working in a pizzeria with two owners: one a frugal bean counter, the other a passionate people-person. Sales soared higher the nights the people-person was in charge! Tom talks about that, his own leadership style, and the parallels between playing music in a band and great leadership. Here's what Tom and Maureen cover: How innovation has always been one of the major keys to Donatos’ profitability and success; Why the core tenets of Agape Capitalism complement corporate goals so effectively; and The positive effects the COVID pandemic had on the restaurant industry…and, most critically, on its leadership. S4 Ep 10S4-Ep9: The Dance Between Leadership & Followership
Guests: Margaret Heffernan & Ira Chaleff What we need from leaders today is vastly different than even a decade ago. That change began years ago; the pandemic merely accelerated it. The reason is simple: turbulence and uncertainty are now chronic conditions. Now, guest Margaret Heffernan says, leadership is about building organizations that thrive in turbulence. She shares six steps to make that happen. Then, Ira Chaleff switches the perspective to your followers. After all, the best leadership requires the best followership. Influence is not unidirectional from leader to follower; it bounces back from the front line to the back office, too. Ira reveals how followers act with courage to collaborate with leaders -- and shares the counterintuitive idea of intelligent disobedience. S10 Ep 5S10-Ep5: Gender, Race, and the Leadership Obstacles Faced by this Canadian Member of Parliament
Guest: Celina Caesar-Chavannes What’s your secret identity? Our true selves are often buried so deeply that they’re a secret to us. It’s hard enough to lead authentically when you don’t know who you are – but how can you motivate your team if you don’t know who they really are, either? The key is the praxis of humanization, a way of helping your coworkers bring their authentic selves to the office. But her revelation on identity soon followed, with important lessons for other leaders! Here's what Celina and Maureen cover: Why titles don’t protect us from society’s sundry "-isms"; The many ways we’re conditioned to NOT be our best at work (or at home); and How leaders can foster humanization, so people bring their best, unique selves to work (and you have a happier, more productive team). S5 Ep 9S5-Ep9: Lifetime Achievement in Leadership Theory & Practice
Guests: Joanne Ciulla & Keith Grint Why do so many leaders have trouble acting ethically? For nearly three decades, Joanne Ciulla has focused her research on ethics in leadership. Even though the framework for ethics is over 2,400 years old, our definition of being ethical holds firm today. Why is it taking so many leaders so long to catch on? Her answers may surprise you. Joanne earned the International Leadership Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Keith Grint did, as well; Maureen interviews him in the second half of this episode. S10 Ep 4S10-Ep4: Law & Order...& Leadership
Guests: Rob Elkington & Les Sylven To serve and protect: servant leadership takes on a whole new meaning for a law enforcement leader. Society’s expectations for policing have changed radically – for example, up to 80% of what officers do overlaps with what social workers do! Add calls for reduced funding, labor shortages, brutality…and gone are the days of simple “cops and robbers” policing. But the leadership and hierarchy of policing have changed very little. So can law enforcement truly rise to the challenges of both reform and crime without new styles of leadership? Guests Rob Elkington and Les Sylven have some very surprising solutions that go far beyond the stereotypes of the hardboiled police commissioner – solutions that any leader of a high-stress workforce will find extremely useful! Here's what Rob, Les, and Maureen cover: Why almost all law enforcement leaders have faced trauma – and how it can help them better serve their teams; How soft-skills like mindfulness are just as important as hard skills like firearms training; and If your mission is to serve and protect, servant leadership makes a lot more sense than old-school top-down management. S9 Ep 51S9-Ep51: Amazon’s Innovation Secret from their VP: Look to Failure for Your Success
Guest: Beryl Tomay One of the biggest keys to success is failure. It seems counterintuitive, but the reality is we ALL make mistakes. Highly successful leaders embrace stumbles and fumbles, and learn from them. As Beryl Tomay points out, that’s especially true at Amazon. Their innovation culture is so highly effective because Amazon learns from each step, good or bad, and builds from it. Indeed, some of Amazon’s most successful products wouldn’t have seen the light of day if not for what was learned from products that didn’t make the cut! Beryl started as an intern and rose through the ranks to be Amazon’s Vice-President of Last Mile Delivery and Technology. Here’s what she and Maureen cover in this episode: 1. The tools in Amazon’s innovation culture that breed success – including mentors, resiliency, and perpetual learning; 2. The drive to (and importance of) planting seeds for the future; and 3. How a love for Radiohead facilitated Beryl’s career path that led to Amazon!
