Safe Park Indy Returns: Offering Parking Spots for Those Living in Cars

Safe Park Indy is back in Indianapolis, partnering with a downtown church to provide ten parking spots for individuals living in their cars. The lot will open by June 1st, but spots are only guaranteed for those approved through their process.

Last year, the program had to shut down due to overwhelming volunteer demand, with waitlists reaching over four hundred people. This time, theyve simplified their approach, focusing solely on parking and portable restrooms, which theyll cover.

No safety issues arose during the previous program, with everyone following the rules and only approved individuals showing up. Theyve learned from past experiences, such as not overloading volunteers with additional responsibilities like providing indoor spaces.

Data from four hundred seventy-five applicants reveals that sixty-three percent were homeless for the first time, sixty-one percent hadnt sought social services, forty-five percent had jobs—many juggling two—and forty-one percent had some college.

This setup could be beneficial for working individuals, allowing them to keep their cars as safe havens while they rebuild their lives.
