MACRO-B Project Achieves Stunning 45% Drop in Opioid Overdoses in Indianapolis

In 2022, the MACRO-B project launched in Black communities of Indianapolis, aiming to reduce opioid overdose deaths by addressing structural racism. Led by April Crabtree and Judy Seo, they achieved a 25% reduction in one year and a remarkable 45% drop by the end. The projects success was built on strong community ties and a diverse coalition, including overdose survivors, first responders, police, health professionals, and politicians. They distributed over 100,000 naloxone doses, 50,000 fentanyl test strips, and 30,000 xylazine test strips. Despite stigmas and distrust, culturally tailored education on addiction science and proper naloxone use helped overcome barriers. The projects success led to the legalization of test strips in Indiana and is now expanding to other counties, training over 100 people with the same community focus.
