Show Notes

George Knox, a former slave turned successful Black businessman, is set to receive a historical marker in downtown Greenfield, Indiana. Knox, born in 1841, escaped slavery during the Civil War and built a thriving barbershop in Greenfield, later expanding to Indianapolis. He employed other Black barbers, served high-profile clients, and even ran for political office. Despite facing constant threats and hate, including from the Ku Klux Klan, Knox remained resilient. His great-grandchildren, George Knox III and Adelaide Knox Jones, have kept his story alive. The marker, to be installed by years end, is a sign of community progress and a long-overdue recognition of Indianas past.
