La sinfonia è incompiuta.
Malher prima della sua morte, ha steso il piano dell'opera ed ha terminato solo il I° tempo; nel 1924 Ernst Křenek ha ricostruito il III° movimento sulla base degli appunti di Malher ed in seguito altri compositori hanno tentato di ricostruire tutta la sinfonia.
