Simeon England is a nationally recognized craftsman, blacksmith, gunsmith, bladesmith, from South Central Kentucky specializing in 18th century hand forged tomahawks, flintlock rifles, and hand forged blades.I met up with Simeon at the 2022 Contemporary Longrifle Association show. Simeon displays his work at this show and talked me into handling several of the ahwks he had on display. Instantly I recognized a difference in how it handled compared to my ‘throwing’ tomahawk. This sparked a nearly hour long discussion about the form and function of original tomahawks. In this episode we're chatting with Pennsylvania Federation of Blackpowder Shooters President, Jeff Warner about his interest in muzzleloading and how its changed over the years.For Jeff, competition is serious, he practices whenever he can and dry fires his flintlock in his living room. Just before recording Jeff competed in the Pennsylvania State Championship and is now planning for a trip to Kentucky for the annual inter-state muzzleloading competition.It's not all serious for Jeff though, shooting competitive muzzleloaders is as much about score as it is hanging out with good friends and learning along the way. Nathan has been involved in muzzleloading since he was a young boy hunting the Pennsylvania woods with his father and grandfather, but it wasn’t until he was older that a deep connection with the land and history was made. As a young man and father, Nathan sees his now 10-year-old blog and magazine articles as a way to give back and share the knowledge he has found in books and first-hand accounts with the rest of the community. Last week, the Washington Fish and Wildlife commissioners rejected proposals that would have allowed slight modernization to the muzzleloading rules.Currently in Washington State, sights must be open, peep and can include fiber optic inserts. Using any sort of sight with telescopic abilities or any type of glass is against the law. It is also against the law to have any kind of electronic device attached to your muzzleloader, like a camera.The proposed rule changes focused on the following:1. Allowing the use of 1x or red dot scopes on muzzleloading firearms.2. Allowing video-cameras to be mounted to muzzleloading firearms.3. Clarifying that the term “load” refers to the powder charge and projectile and that both must be loaded from the muzzle. (Possibly to restrict the use of the “Federal Fire Stick” during Washington’s Muzzleloading season, though it looks to be allowed in the rifle season)Public comments were submitted and boiled down to the following:Common themes:• General support for rule changes• General disagreement about rule changes• Desire to maintain primitive weapon types• Concern about increased hunter participation in muzzleloader seasons• Concern over availability of 1x scopes• Support for rule change due to improved shot placement• Support for 1x scopes on muzzleloading firearms because it enables hunter participation (e.g., poor eyesight may restrict participation with this weapon type)• Concern over ethical shot placement – perception that scopes may enable long- distance shootingGMAC input: 92 (11/12)% agree with proposed changesConcern over scope availabilitySupport for allowing 1x scope due to improved participation Read the full presentation hereOn April 7, the commission was split on modifications to the rules that would have allowed muzzleloaders to attach 1-power or red dot scopes to their guns or attach video cameras to their guns. York Memorial Shoot at their website here The Alvin C. York Memorial shoot is held each spring in Pall Mall, Tennessee. The next event is March 25th, 2023. The shoot has been held every year since 1993. The location is a pasture on the farm that was deeded to Sgt. York after his heroic acts during World War I. The farm is now a TN state park.This shoot is a reenactment of the over the log shoots held and attended by Sgt. York, both before and after the WW1. For those who choose to participate in the shoot, dress of the early 1900s is the order of the day. Gentlemen wearing bib overalls sporting very wide loud flowery ties, some may be seen in suits of the day like pinstripe suits and wide-brimmed fedora hats. Ladies, wear dresses that would have been in stylish during that period or bib overalls. Period dress is not required to shoot in the match. Shooters, range from very young, to senior citizens, both male and female participants. Shooters range from those new to muzzle loading, to the weathered skilled veterans. This week we're talking with Katie Petry about her recent muzzleloading black bear hunt in New Mexico. I'm really excited to have Katie on the show today to talk about her family history with muzzleloading and how that led to her recent muzzling black bear hunt. Hearing this inspiring story about Katie taking down this black bear with her grandfather's Thompson Center Cherokee is pretty energizing. "My name is Katie Petry and I'm just a mom from Indiana. I got into muzzleloading through my grandfather when I was a young kid I loved to follow him around, and I begged him to. Let me go hunting with him, so he was my inspiration into all things outdoors. I recently was very very blessed and able to honor his memory by taking my first black beer with a traditional cap and ball muzzleloader that he gave me about fifteen years ago.He passed away two years ago and since then I've been hunting almost exclusively with that muzzleloader. So this was a very special hunt for me as a kid I just a scrawny little kid and I saw my grandpa taking my two older boy: cousins, hunting and I begged him, take me- and he said you know "Oh you're too little you'll get cold, you won't like it", and so finally he was like all right. "You know I'm going to have you shoot my four ten and you're not going to like it. It'll kick and you won't like it, but I'm gonna, let you do it anyway because you keep asking me", and so he let me shoot it and I shot all the cans down that he'd set up for me and he got just an absolute kick out of that yeah. I know I'll, never forget him just laughing and bragging on me and I was very, very young. I can't remember how old I was, but I was so proud of myself and just that whole experience that grandpa was so proud and that I loved it was kind of like the first thing that just got me just passionate about it.I wasn't the only grandkid I wasn't the only girl, but we had a very special bond over anything to do with the outdoors."Katie is an advocate for hunters everywhere using any legal method of take. In 2012 he was cast for the leading role, in the PBS documentary, An Audacious American, the story of Kentucky abolitionist Cassius Marcellus Clay. Today we're talking with Eric van Alstine, a traditional leather worker from the state of Missouri working to recreate the golden age of leatherworking with his contemporary works.Eric really focuses on using historical tools and oftentimes original tools from the eighteen and up to the nineteen hundreds. Eric has a lot to say about the history of leatherworking and where he gets his inspiration from. He is a real student of history when it comes to all of this, and he offers some really interesting perspectives about where he studies where he gets his resources, where he finds originals to be inspired by to make clients and customers bags."My only, what I call my modern tools is scissors and harness needles and pretty much everything else is old, antique tools from the Golden Age of leather work and leatherworkthat golden age when happened, were started in about 1826 and then you know it kind of you know went on up until the early nineteen hundreds, and so all my tools come from that time frame and I do have one piece- it goes back to about the late 1700s, I don't use it- it just sits on the shelf. I'm a student of history, American history and I derive a lot of stuff from there and I see a lot of guys that sit there and say: Oh, this is the way it was. This is the way it was you know, but they miss out on the harness makers and the saddle makers and how beautiful their work really was. And so I try to take what those harness makers did in the back, what I call the mountain regions and everything- and you know recreate what they would have made: with the tools that they had, and so that's what makes mine look a little different than most.You can go out west and sit down with some of these old saddle makers and they just make beautiful works of art, and you know, 1700s hand-stitched saddles, they had to have somebody make them, and you know it's a lost and dying art of what was. I try to keep that alive by picking up old, antique leatherworking tools. I employ all those in my work and at the end of the day it looks a little bit different than most, and that's why I like to do. The muzzleloaders Nick is using and referencing are custom built to meet the demands of Smokeles Powder. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and safety protocol for your muzzleloader. For Nick Parcher, muzzleloading looks a bit different than many of us are used to. Nick is focused on two things, precision, and hunting.In the late 1990s, Savage arms released the first "mass produced" smokeless muzzleloader, the "ML" and later the "ML2". The fallout from these rifles reached far and wide, they lead to a series of injuries and muddied the water on muzzleloaders and how to use them.But from the ashes of the Savage ML came a new breed of precision muzzleloading, one that would leave the roundball , sabot, and blackpowder behind.Nick is an avid smokeless muzzleloader enthusiast and has been since the launch of the Savage ML. "Savage didn't really know what they were doing, in starting a whole new breed of muzzleloader", Nick says, and he was right. While the ML and ML2 are relegated to aftermarket parts for their shooters in 2021, Nick is part of a community doing what Savage couldn't, pushing muzzleloading to the limit while being as safe as possible.Hunting for Nick has changed a lot over the years, when he was younger he hunted in a party with his buddies, all tracking and pushing deer through the woods/fields with shotguns. As his interested changed, and he moved towards hunting from a blind, he needed something with more accuracy and more range. Before switching to a muzzleloader, 190-200yds was as far as Nick had ever shot, now it's much further than that, about 492 yards. For 2021, Nick is hoping to take a deer at ~800 yards.When it comes to the safety of modern smokless muzzleloaders, Nick is happy about the changes in technology and mentality among shooters, he's become a go to person to run simulations on pressure calculations to make sure a load is safe before it's shot."Now I'm not going to lie, a couple of these guys actually blow up guns or you know most barrels getting to know stuff, but it was under a more controlled scenario where they kind of saw coming right. They'd push the limit a little too far and and nobody really got hurt, but these pressure traces were all over the message boards and and people were starting to do that and then, of course, quick loads came along. Quick loads had been out for a long time, but had never really been applied to muzzle loading and that's and that's kind of where I took over I took quick loads and being an engineer and using a lot of software, I kind of worked it out and and now quick loads is actually the go to name.So whenever somebody asks me, what is as safe to shoot right. This match is very structured, relying on the NRA classification guidelines, but this is good, it keeps you in competition with similarly skilled shooters. This is a great match that grows every year, now is the time to get in and have some fun.The Chattanooga Conservancy has discovered a swamped, dugout canoe in the Chattanooga river. In coordination with the South Carolina institute of archaeology and anthropology, and the forest service, a team worked together to bring the canoe out from the river and into a cradle where the canoe can safely be removed from the river and preserved.On July 10th and 11th, Bergara launched their first Bergara experience event in a little over two years. In the old locksmith's house in Woodbury Kentucky you'll find Frank and Lally House working in their studios just about everyday of the week and if they aren't, Lally will be in the flowerbeds and Frank will be in the garage working on an old car.As a young boy, Frank hated school, but he did like making things with his hands. From a young age, he was in the shop making all manner of things sharp and pointy. He went on to welding school and later became a first-class boilermaker. In the 1980s, work was slow, Frank finally had time to begin working in his own shop. After a trip to Sears Frank came home with a bandsaw and got to work. Hopefully, we see Blackhorn 209 on shelves soon. With the  competition season picking up, shooters are looking for powder. Those  who have ordered/preordered new rifles for 2021 are concerned they have paperweights, with some online looking for information on shooting other substitutes until the shortage ends.   NRA Camp needs caps for their summer kids' camp!   Manufacturers can't help due to the market volatility, they are asking volunteers to part with some caps to help kids over the summer.   The NMLRA will be collecting caps for any donors during the Spring  National Shoot. Anyone with extras is encouraged to bring some extras to  send to the kids. By collecting caps from many into one shipment, the  hazmat fees will be limited.   Related to Caps, last week muzzle-loaders.com received a shipment of  #11 and #10 caps, as of recording, all but the Schuetzen Musket caps are sold out. The article focuses on a crime that was committed with a blackpowder muzzleloading cap and ball revolver, we certainly agree the crime was horrible and any loss of life is upsetting, but the article attempts to  demonize muzzleloaders in a way that we aren't familiar with. Pro-Gun control rhetoric has been saved for modern firearms for years, but I  fear this marks the first foray into including muzzleloaders in the fight.   Maybe I'm overly concerned, but I think the article is important for us to read and understand where the conversation about muzzleloaders could be going, so we may be properly prepared to preserve our passion for muzzleloading. Sadly, Smith & Wesson haven’t owned Thompson/Center for 20 years, having bought the company in 2006 and many feel S&W never gave the brand a chance, citing limited releases and support for their once best-selling muzzleloading rifles and the customers who shoot them.It’s a sad day to see such an iconic brand being discarded by Smith and Wesson. With interest in muzzleloaders still climbing, they are losing out on a real opportunity.Hopefully, someone else will see the opportunity at hand and invest in Thompson/Center Arms, giving muzzleloading enthusiasts more choice in their next muzzleloader.Georgia House Bill 362 was signed into law on May 1, 2021, surrounded by a CVA Hat and the new Paramount HTR. Being their home state, perhaps CVA, and their parent company, BPI Outdoors had a hand in this new bill. Previously, the caliber limit was .44 caliber. This is a large change, taking the caliber size well below the needed .40 caliber to allow for the new CVA Paramount HTR and Knight Peregrine.
