Exclusion in the Name of Inclusion

Decades ago the free speech movement was born in the campus of UC Berkeley. Today the story is the complete opposite. Only a few weeks ago a student senator by the name of Isabella Chow abstained from a vote supporting “transgender rights” and even though she gave a well-reasoned explanation now more than 1,000 people have signed a petition demanding that she resign from the student government. In other words, she’s being excluded in the name of inclusion. Frank explains what’s happening in the college campuses across the U.S. and why.

Definiendo el argumento ontológico modal

By Max Andrews ONTOLOGICAL ARGUMENT [1] This is the ontological argument that advocates the existence of an essential, omniscient, omnipotent and morally perfect being: The property of being maximally large is exemplified in some possible world. The property of being maximally large is equivalent, by definition, to the property of being maximally excellent in all possible worlds. The property of being maximally excellent implies the properties of omniscience, omnipotence, and moral perfection. A universal property is one that is exemplified in all possible worlds or none. Any property that is equivalent to a property held in all possible worlds is a universal property. Therefore, there exists a being that is essentially omniscient, omnipotent, and morally perfect. Now, this is a very technical argument… So, let’s try to make some sense of this: Defense of Premise 1. When I refer to a possible world I am referring only to a possible logical state of affairs. The first premise merely states that the property of being maximally large is logically possible – that is, that no contradiction obtains. Defense of Premise 2. Premise 2 outlines the logical equivalence of maximum greatness with maximum excellence. Defense of Premise 3. Premise three follows from the logical equivalence located in premise 2. Defense of Premise 4. Premise 4 presents a disjunctive: either the universal property X is valid in all worlds (hence its universality) or it is necessarily a contradiction, and is impossible to obtain. Defense of Premise 5. The fifth premise asserts the first disjunctive stated, which is simply that if a property holds in all possible worlds, then it is a universal property. Therefore, if a universal property holds in some possible world, then this universal property holds in all possible worlds. Logic does not vary across possible worlds. Defense of the Conclusion. Therefore, if these universal properties hold in all possible worlds, they are valid in the actual world. This argument also does not “define” God to exist. Rather, it is an a priori argument that considers the mere possibility of a being with maximally great properties. This modal form of the argument shows that if a being with maximally great and maximally excellent properties is possible, then that being must exist. Anselm’s ontological argument Anselm’s argument can be formulated as follows: God exists in the understanding. God is a being. If X exists only in the understanding and is a possible being, then X could have been greater. Let us suppose that God only exists in the understanding. God could have been greater (Dado 2, 4, 3). God is a being of whom nothing greater is possible. So a being for which no greater being is possible is therefore a being for which no greater being is possible. Since 4 gives rise to a contradiction 4 must be false. God exists not only in the understanding. Therefore, God exists in reality. Existence in reality is an aggrandizing property. The argument is a reductio ad absurdum . To prove X assume ¬X. Show how ¬X leads to a patent contradiction or falsehood. Gaunilo’s objection Gaunilo proposes the idea of a perfect island. “I can conceive of a perfect island so this perfect island must exist.” The problem with this is that the island could, in reality, always be better. How many palm trees? How big is the island? How good is the climate? Inevitably, when you start adding all the big properties together to form the island you get Anselm’s idea of God. Plantinga’s modal ontological argument This is the formulation of Plantinga’s Argument: It is possible for a maximally great being (God) to exist. If it is possible for a maximally great being to exist, then a maximally great being exists in some possible world. If a maximally great being exists in some possible world, then it exists in all possible worlds. If a maximally great being exists in all possible worlds, then it exists in the actual world. Therefore, a maximally large being exists in the real world. Therefore, a maximally large being exists. Therefore, God exists. The object in the modal ontological argument is God, and his essence is necessary existence . That is what we get from one world to all possible worlds, because if necessary existence is valid in one possible world then it is valid in all possible worlds, like a computer virus. Where does God’s necessity come from? If it comes from something else then it lacks a particular aggrandising property (and is therefore contingent). However, if God’s necessity comes from himself, his aseity, then these aggrandising properties refer to God’s essence. An important distinction to make is that a necessary being is not the fact of its existence, but rather it takes part in necessary existence. Furthermore, if God is simple then God is his essence and his essence is to exist. CONCLUSION [2] So what God has that we don’t have, then, is

Is it wrong to impose religious beliefs in politics?

Frank thoroughly examines a comment by Rachel Bird posted on the New York Times comments section of Tim Keller’s latest article. He dissects the comment and answers the following question: Is it wrong to impose religious beliefs in politics? Here’s the comment by Rachel: “As a strong believer in the separation of Church and State, I believe that religion has no place in political discourse. I am sick and tired of so-called Christians and other faith-based groups. using their religious beliefs to influence public policy. You want to pray. Fine. Go to church. You want to live your life in accordance with some religious belief. Fine. Do it in the privacy of your home. But, do not use your religious belief to argue that your right to free speech is infringed upon when you are asked to bake a cake for a same sex couple, provide birth control under your company’s health insurance plan, deny science, etc. In short, do not use your religious beliefs to deny my right to live as I see fit. To influence public policy which denies millions of women, minorities, and children, access to health care, abortion, voting rights, civil rights. I am simply fed up with the hypocrisy to the so-called religious people in this country preaching to the rest of us who simply want to live our lives freely and openly without the burden of dealing with someone’s else’s gods foisted upon us.” -Rachel Bird

Irresistible: Reclaiming the New that Jesus Unleashed

Once upon a time there was a version of our faith that was practically . . . irresistible. But that was then. Today we preach, teach, write, and communicate as if nothing has changed. As if “The Bible says it,” still settles it. It’s time to hit pause on much of what we’re doing and consider the faith modeled by our first-century brothers and sisters who had no official Bible, no status, and humanly speaking, little chance of survival. What did they know that we don’t? What made their faith so compelling, so defensible, so irresistible? Buckle up . . . you’re about to find out! Frank interviews Andy Stanly about his new book Irresistible. Here’s what Frank had to say about the book: ““Warning: This book will set you and your ministry back—back to the first century and the approach to advancing the gospel modeled by Jesus and the apostles. Andy reminds us that the resurrection was at the center of the first-century apologetic. Then he challenges twenty-first century believers to reclaim it as the center of ours as well. I agree with Andy—this approach changed the world once. I’m convinced it could do so again. Read and apply now!”—Frank Turek

William Lane Craig’s Secret Weapon Is His Amazing Wife Jan

By Wintery Knight I want to draw your attention to a talk on “Vision in Life” given by Dr. William Lane Craig. Dr. Craig is the ablest defender of the Christian faith operating today. He has done formal academic debates with all of the best-known atheists on major university campuses in front of thousands of university students. It turns out that he owes a lot of his success to his amazing wife Jan. The MP3 file is here. (32 minutes) This talk was Dr. Craig’s chapel address to Biola University students. About 11 minutes into the talk, Bill describes what happened after he finished his Bachelor’s degree at Wheaton: And so I joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ for 2 years and was assigned to Northern Illinois University. And that was where I met my wife Jan. She was a graduate of the University of North Dakota where she had come to faith in Christ. And she had a similar vision for her life of evangelism and discipleship. And as we worked at NIU together, she with gals and I with the guys, leading students to Christ and discipling them to walk with the Lord, we fell in love. And we decided that we would be more effective if we joined forces and became a team. So their reason for getting together was because they thought that they would be more effective in evangelism and discipleship if they worked as a team. It is at this point in the talk where Bill begins to explain just how Jan molded him into the lean, mean debating machine that travels the world striking terror into the hearts of atheists. Bill’s first story about Jan occurs early after their marriage while he is working on his first Master’s degree at Trinity: And it was also at that time that I began to see what an invaluable asset the Lord had given me in Jan. I remember I came home from classes one day and found her at the kitchen table with all the catalogs and schedules and papers spread out in front of her and she said, “look! I’ve figured out how you can get two Masters degrees at the same time that it would normally take to get one! All you have to do is take overloads every semester, go to all full-time summer school and do all these other things, and you can do two MAs in the time it takes to do one!” And I thought, whoa! Are you sure you really want to make the commitment it takes to do this kind of thing? And she said, “Yeah! Go for it!” And it was then I began to see that God had given me a very special woman who was my supporter – my cheerleader – and who really believed in me. And as long as she believed in me, that gave me the confidence to dream bigger dreams, and to take on challenges that I had never thought of before. In an article on his website, he talks about how Jan encouraged him to do his first Ph.D.: As graduation from Trinity neared, Jan and I were sitting one evening at the supper table in our little campus apartment, talking about what to do after graduation. Neither of us had any clear leading or inclination of what we should do next. So Jan said to me, “Well if money were no object, what would you really like to do next?” I replied, “If money were no object, what I’d really like to do is go to England and do a doctorate under John Hick.” “Who’s he?” she asked. “Oh, he’s this famous British philosopher who’s written extensively on arguments for the existence of God,” I explained. “If I could study with him, I could develop a cosmological argument for God’s existence.” But it hardly seemed a realistic idea. The next evening at supper Jan handed me a slip of paper with John Hick’s address on it. “I went to the library today and found out that he’s at the University of Birmingham in England,” she said. “Why don’t you write him a letter and ask him if you can do a doctoral thesis under him on the cosmological argument?” What a woman! So I did, and to our amazement and delight, Professor Hick wrote back saying he’d be very pleased to supervise my doctoral work on that subject. So it was an open door! And in the same article, he explains how Jan encouraged him to get his second Ph.D.: As Jan and I neared the completion of my doctoral studies in Birmingham, our future path was again unclear to us. I had sent out a number of applications for teaching positions in philosophy at American universities but had received no bites. We didn’t know what to do. I remember it like yesterday. We were sitting at the supper table in our little house outside Birmingham, and Jan suddenly said to me, “Well, if money were no object, what would you really like to do next?” I laughed because I remembered how the Lord had used her question to guide us in the past. I had no trouble answering the question. “If money were no object, what I’d really like to do is go to Germany and study under Wolfhart Pannenberg.” “Who’s he?” “Oh, he’s this famous German theologian who’s defended the resurrection of Christ historically,” I explained. “If I could study with him, I could develop a historical apologetic for the resurrection of Jesus.” Our con

Is Jesus the Real Messiah? with Dr. Michael L. Brown

Dr. Michael Brown and Frank answer the following Jewish Objections to Jesus: • Isn’t the Messiah supposed to build the third temple? Jesus didn’t do that. • The Messiah is supposed to gather all the Jews back to the land of Israel and usher in peace. Jesus didn’t do that. • Doesn’t the NT take OT prophecies out of context, like Isaiah 7:14? • What do Jews say about a child being born whom will be Mighty God (Isa. 9:6)? • Isn’t the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 53 Israel? http://realmessiah.com/

Zombie Science with Dr. Jonathan Wells

In 2000, biologist Jonathan Wells took the science world by storm with Icons of Evolution, a book showing how biology textbooks routinely promote Darwinism using bogus evidence— in Zombie Science, Wells asks a simple question: If the icons of evolution were just innocent textbook errors, why do so many of them still persist? Science has enriched our lives and led to countless discoveries. But now, Wells argues, it’s being corrupted. Empirical science is devolving into zombie science, shuffling along unfazed by opposing evidence. Don’t miss this fantastic interview with Dr. Wells about his new book, Zombie Science! The Historical Reliability of the Gospels with Dr. Craig Blomberg

The reliability of the Gospels is under attack. Skeptics seek to undermine the story of Jesus Christ by saying we cannot really trust the Gospel. “They were not written by eye-witnesses,” “They contradict each other,” “They have historical errors.” Those who have not studied this subject may be caught off-guard and begin to lose the footing of their faith. Frank interviews one of the leading scholars in the subject the Distinguished Professor of New Testament from Denver Seminary, Dr. Craig Blomberg! He shares some great insights on the topic during this podcast and tells us how to learn more about it directly from him on his new Online Course. Learn more about his online course here.

The “Hardware” of Life Argument

By Steve Williams “I can see the fingerprints of God when I look at you I can see the fingerprints of God and I know its true you’re a masterpiece that all creation quietly applauds and you’re covered with the fingerprints of God” ~from Fingerprints of God, by Stephen Curtis Chapman The common scientific view of the “hardware of life” (that is, the physical components of living systems) is, as Biologist Richard Dawkins puts it, “the study of complicated things that give the appearance of having been designed for a purpose.” (The Blind Watchmaker, 1986). Unfortunately, Dawkins (like many others in his field) has succumbed to a logically fallacious assumption that a supernatural explanation is not within the “pool of live options” to explain this appearance of design. Why not? Well, to summarize the common opinions of materialists like Dawkins, it’s “not science”. But what is “Science”? Louis Pasteur once said “Religions, philosophies, atheism, materialism, or its opposite–none of these is relevant to the matter…I might even add that, scientifically speaking, I am indifferent to them all. The question is purely one of fact”. In other words, science should be “the un-biased search for truth” without philosophical preconceptions. That definition was always the ancient understanding of the term. Since the so-called “Enlightenment” that swept through Europe in the 1700’s, and especially since the proposal of Darwin’s Theory of Evolution in 1859, however, intellectual activists have been trying to add the qualifying concept of “within naturalistic explanations” to the definition. What that means, in effect, is the addition of a bias to the search for truth. This bias first “got its legs” from the writings of an apparently bitter atheistic Scottish philosopher named David Hume in the 1700’s. Hume proposed a set of reasons why the supernatural should be ruled be ruled out of consideration as an explanatory mechanism. Not long afterwards, these reasons were shown to be fallacious (we’ll examine this in a later chapter), but at the time, it was as if Europe was eager to unfetter itself from religion, and atheism blossomed somewhat throughout the continent. Most modern philosophers (even agnostic ones) find Hume’s arguments to be almost laughably illogical, but many atheists unknowingly cite him today as if he was “the Christ” of their belief system. For a full-length treatment of this subject, see John Earman’s book Hume’s Abject Failure, but suffice it to say for the moment that modern humankind has nowhere near a broad enough scope of reality to eliminate the possibility of the supernatural. To the contrary, there are many things in our experience that defy naturalistic explanations. The philosophical name of the most common scientific form of atheism is “Materialism”, and it claims that not only is there no God, but that there is nothing even like God in the universe. Although it has taken root within the Biological sciences, it has done so to a much lesser extent within Astronomy, Philosophy, and Physics. Many Americans would probably be surprised to know that polls show that the percentage of PhD’ed scientists overall who identify themselves as Christians and who go to church is roughly the same as the percentage in the population at large. Unfortunately, the small minority who identify themselves as atheists is much louder and more aggressive though, so they exert a disproportionate influence on the media, academic standards committees and the like. Luckily for all who respect unbiased inquiry, many Philosophers who are experts in logic by definition (logic being a subset of Philosophy), have objected vociferously, especially in the past 40 years, to this effort, and have recognized that the scientific method is at stake. As I wrote before, it seems that the key element that catalyzed this mindset since the late 1800’s is Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Biologists became so enamored with it over the years that they invested heavily in deepening and entrenching their paradigms based on that assumption, and are not willing to consider that major problems have developed within it. Pride in Biology, and a reluctance to admit being wrong might be a factor. One has to wonder if there are spiritual and carnal reasons that admitting the mere possibility of the existence of the metaphysical is so daunting to some. Since Darwinian Evolution seems to be the lynchpin of this type of thinking, let’s take a hard look at it. The concept of life arising from non-life by random chance is called “abiogenesis”. This concept is the “creation story” of Darwinian Evolution. But what are the odds of the building blocks of life coming together by random chance in a way to provide even the possibility of life? Harold Morowitz, an agnostic Yale University physicist, created mathematical models by imagining broths of living bacteria that were superheated until all the complex chemicals were broken down into basic building blocks.
