As I got home from work, a tow truck pulled up behind me. And I thought, well, they are just turning around, but lo & behold, it stopped at the end of my driveway and started backing up. What is this tow truck doing? It proceeded to take the hook and tow my card. What is this some kind of a practical joke? What are you doing? And the person said, Oh, we have orders to repo your car. We all have reasons why we choose to do what we do, and most the time, we have no idea that past choices dictate what we're going to do today. As my friend shared her concerns and frustrations with me, as she was making decisions, she was going back and forth. Comparing herself to being human and not being human. Who judges that? #IdatemoneyGrowing up, all I remember my mom saying is I have to borrow from Peter to pay Paul every single day. I remember thinking, who's Peter? And why is he allowing Paul to borrow money? Didn't make any sense to me. When I got older, and I realized that that conditioning statement was ingrained in my brain and my subconscious and was dictating how I was using my money.I entered into a relationship with money after years of struggling with nothing that had to do with finances, it had to do with choosing abortion twice. Prior to age 17, I was faced with three unplanned pregnancies, two of them ended in abortion, and I swore I would never tell. I didn't tell anyone until 2016 as the first time I told my husband. And, you know, I told him in hopes that he would see me as the ugly person I felt that I was, I was so full of shame and guilt that I hid behind people pleasing, and I self-sabotaged to soothe the hurt, not really fully understanding why. I never processed the emotions, heck didn't even know what emotions were until the movie Inside Out came out. Then I realized that my choices at 16 affected my unprocessed feelings and dictated how my relationship with money, myself, my health, relationships with others, how it was creating this emotional roller coaster. I hit rock bottom realizing that something needed to change. Spent my whole life with money. Budgets and restrictions. When you sit down and implement the 10-10-10 strategy, what are you investing in?Say you build your emergency savings built up, you get six to seven months worth of expenses in that savings account now it's time to invest, it's time to look at your retirement accounts, maybe get into a Roth IRA or something, invest in stock or what have you. Maybe you want to buy some real estate, how do you know it's going to be a good investment, you're not going to just go buy the first piece of land is for sale. You're going to study the area, look at the stats, compare the surrounding property then you're going to make a sound decision. A few years back when my husband and I hit a million dollars, we were thinking about retiring and purchasing a Chick-fil A back home in Rochester, New York. There wasn't any at that time. After gathering the facts we decided that we were going to invest in a beach home instead. Great choice.Weigh the facts, crunch the numbers.
