Ep 878From Poverty to Prosperity w/ SheWolfeOfWallStreet #878
Our guest today is Amanda Wolfe, better known as the SheWolfeOfWallStreet, and we’re grateful to have her share her story with us. Amanda was born into extreme poverty – not “I had a rough month after college so I slept in my car”, but more like “begging for food at gas stations” poverty. Her upbringing had a profound impact on her view of money and caused her to become a self-taught financial educator who has built a community of over 300,000 folks. She now helps countless families create debt payoff strategies, budget, and invest! Amanda is all over Instagram helping individuals achieve financial freedom, but how did she do it? What happened between those two extremes of poverty and prosperity? We’re excited for her to share her story, what she originally believed was a ticket to the middle class, how she learned to actually accumulate wealth, her take on side hustles, her relationship to money today, and much more! Ep 875Peering Inside the Finance Industry w/ Josh Brown #875
Our guest today has been called one of the greatest financial writers of all time. And it’s no wonder – Josh Brown started his original blog, The Reformed Broker back in 2008 as he now continues to write over at DowntownJoshBrown.com. And his latest book “You Weren’t Supposed to See That: Secrets Every Investor Should Know” just came out yesterday in which he reveals the hidden truths that make the critical difference between understanding the world and being dangerously naive. Josh co-hosts The Compound and Friends podcast where they discuss current market trends and financial strategies. And in all of his extra time, he is the manager of billions of dollars as CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management. Ep 872Investing is Risky. Do it Anyway w/ Jesse Cramer #872
“Looking to the long-term upside potential of changing jobs” and “the ways that an overly pessimistic point of view can derail your life”, were just a couple of our big takeaways from talking with our friend Jesse Cramer, from The Best Interest. At his core, Jesse is a financial educator who strives to break down the bigger and nerdier personal finance topics into nuggets of wisdom that all can learn from. In fact, he loves personal finances so much that he stepped away from a lucrative and stable job as an aerospace engineer, in order to join a fiduciary fee-only wealth management firm. We discuss what kind of cojones it takes to start your own business, his alternative to a pure 529 approach to saving for college, how and why an overly conservative portfolio will crush you, what percentage of Social Security he thinks we can count on, and much more! Ep 869Dirt Cheap Travel w/ Trip of a Lifestyle #869
Unfortunately a LOT of us view traveling as a luxury. It’s something that isn’t necessary, and so because of that we choose to delay our vacations, which means that we’re actually not all that good at traveling when the time finally comes. It’s like any activity we perform infrequently – we probably suck at it! And to make matters worse, if we see travel as a luxury good, that also means we think it’s necessary to spend a ton of money on it as well, which our guests today have completely disproven. We’re joined by the couple behind Trip of a Lifestyle, Lauren and Steven, who are going to share how they travel on the cheap. Here’s a quick and dirty summation of some of their notable milestones: they embarked on a 45 day road trip after college, then rather than honeymooning in Hawaii for a week they stuck around for six months. Shortly after that they purchased their first home, in cash, all while making less than $100,000 combined! They’ve traveled abroad, visited every national park in the US, and they both retired from their full time jobs at age 29. Listen as we discuss everything from menu hacks while on the road, to bigger discussions around giving yourself “permission” to pursue the kind of life that excites you! The results from our survey are in, and it turns out that everyone’s gotta eat!.. He’s the deputy editor of special projects at one of our absolute favorite publications, Consumer Reports. Ep 863Minimizing the Retirement Tax Time Bomb w/ Ed Slott #863
Don’t let short term thinking and a myopic view of your retirement investments derail your financial future! Our guest today puts it succinctly: your IRA is an IOU to the IRS. What would you owe the government now compared to in the future? Will tax brackets return to the heights we saw in the 1940s? Will the government continue to allow Roth IRAs to grow and be drawn upon tax-free? These are just a few of the topics we discuss today. “It would be tough to find anyone who knows more about IRAs than Ed Slott” – and that’s not a quote from us here at How To Money about our guest, but from USA Today. Ed Slott’s company is the nation’s leading source of accurate, timely IRA expertise, and analysis which they provide to financial advisors, institutions, consumers, and media. He’s often quoted in the New York Times, Forbes, Kiplinger, and countless other publications. He’s appeared on virtually all the TV networks, and he's the author of the new book “The Retirement Savings Time Bomb Ticks Louder” which we get into today. Thanks for listening! Join us for a very laid back conversation with our better halves: Kate and Emily sit down behind the mics with us while we enjoyed a summer vacation at the beach last week. Rather than field listener questions, we had a delightful and inquisitive discussion that centered around increased spending. How we’ve managed rising prices whether that’s simply due to inflation or if lifestyle creep is a factor, accounting for additional sources of income, whether our frugality keeps us from more expensive pursuits, hitting pause on investing, the fear of running out of money (or having too much?), raising money savvy kids, aging parents, and plenty more! Ep 856Accidents and Insurance and Deductibles, Oh My! (Bestie) #856
Who remembers fire and tornado drills back when they were in school?! Even though in the moment they seemed like a complete waste of time, looking back as adults it’s easy to see how important it is to run a drill of what you would do in the event of a fire. And if you were in the scary scenario where you DID have a fire at your school, you were probably glad to have gone through the motions and rehearsed exactly what you should do. Insurance is kind of like a fire drill- most of the time it feels completely unnecessary, but in the rare instances where you actually need to put it to use, you’re more than happy to know you have that policy in place. And while virtually everyone is required to have car insurance, fewer folks have had the misfortune of being in an accident. So one of the problems we’re addressing today is what you should do after you’ve been involved in a car accident- it’s a surreal experience that can catch you off guard. We discuss things like diminished value and notifying your insurance company, but we also discuss how you can be financially prepared for accidents and the steps you can take to reduce the cost of insurance. Ep 848Catching up to FI w/ Jackie Cummings Koski #848
Nobody likes to be late to a party – the good snacks and drinks are gone, you’ve missed out on some inside jokes, and other friends may have already dipped out! It’s a bummer to feel like you’re out of the loop, because once you finally do learn about something important, like investing for your future, you’re in the disadvantaged position of having to make up for lost time. And I think that’s how a lot of folks feel when they first learn about FIRE, Financial Independence Retire early, “Sure, I’d be able to retire early too if I had heard about this 30 years ago!” But we’re here to tell you that it’s not too late, and our guest Jackie Cummings Koski is living proof that you didn’t have to start investing in your 20s in order to reach FIRE. Having only woken up to handling her finances responsibly at the age of 38, it only took her around a decade to call it quits (earning less than $100k/year), proving that you can achieve financial freedom even as a late comer. Jackie is a CFP, the author of the recently published FIRE for Dummies, and she’s also the co-host of the podcast Catching Up to FI which is going to be our theme for this episode – getting caught up with your investments! Ep 846Cheap Meal Prep For Struggling Chefs w/ Frankie Celenza (Bestie) #846
What do Michelle Obama and Novak Djokovic have in common? Well at the very least they’ve both enjoyed meals by today’s guest, Frankie Celenza. And if you think about it, whether you’ve lived in the White House, or you’re the number one tennis player in the world, or if you’re just scraping by on a meager income, there is nothing more elemental than our need to eat food. We’re all united by the fact that we get hungry! And while some folks might like to splurge when it comes to meals, the rest of us are looking for ways to cut those costs so we can reach other financial goals. Frankie is a Daytime Emmy award winning culinary host and his show, Struggle Meals, is all about getting the most bang for your buck in the kitchen, both for your wallet and time savings. He is truly a professional in the kitchen and today we talk about buying seasonally, how to be more efficient while we cook, canned vs frozen veggies, redefining what it means to ‘cook’, and of course some of his favorite meals that are affordable and easy to prepare. One of the reasons we’re pumped to have our guests joining us today is because it might finally be time for you to buy a car! But regardless of the macrotrends, cars are expensive, transportation is a massive line item on most American’s budgets, and here to talk to us about how you can spend less on that car is Ray and Zach Shefska, the founders of CarEdge. CarEdge is a customer-centric buyers agent that gets you the best deal possible, and the founders are going to share their secrets on how you can pay the least for your new ride. Combined they have over 40 years of experience in the car business and we’re going to discuss the questions to ask dealerships, the fees to push back on, and timing it just right to ensure you snag the biggest discount. Ep 839Make Money Without Having Any w/ Ciera Rogers #839
This is the episode for everyone out there who doesn’t want to work a soul crushing 9-5 job, specifically the kind of job where you’re being told what you can and can’t do, by someone else. This is an episode about entrepreneurship and starting your own business! Which even that phrase is potentially problematic, because what do some folks think of when they hear “launching a business”? Maybe they’re thinking of shows like Shark Tank, or of different rounds of funding, or proposing a business plan – and while that is how some businesses begin, the vast majority of small business owners won’t be running Fortune 500 companies nor will they be featured on the next episode of How I Built This. But those endeavoring individuals do have a great idea for a new product, or a way they can serve people who are willing to pay. And our guest today, Ciera Rogers, is here to share how she started her business: Babes, which is a women’s wear line that has been worn by the likes of Kim Kardashian and praised by Beyonce. Ciera recounts her journey in her new book “The Outsider Advantage” which comes out June 18th, how at the end of the day it’s all about solving problems, how she still is frugal at heart, and plenty more during today’s episode.
