GARY SOSNIECKI - POTATO MASHER MURDER
Albin Ludwig was furious. He had caught his wife, Cecilia, with other men before; now, after secretly following Cecilia one evening in 1906, Albin was overcome with suspicion. Albin and Cecilia quarreled that night and again the next day. Prosecutors later claimed that the final quarrel ended when Albin knocked Cecilia unconscious with a wooden potato masher, doused her with a flammable liquid, lit her on fire, and left her to burn to death. Albin claimed self-defense, but he was convicted of second-degree murder.Newspaper coverage of the dramatic crime and trial was jarringly explicit and detailed, shocking readers in Indiana, where the crime occurred. Peter Young of the South Bend Times wrote that the murder’s “horrors and its shocking features . . . have never before been witnessed in Mishawaka.” The story was front-page news throughout northern Indiana for much of a year. For several generations, the families of both Cecilia and Albin would be silent about the crime—until Cecilia’s great-grandson, award-winning journalist Gary Sosniecki, uncovered the family’s dark secret. As he discovered, wife beating was commonplace in the early 20th century (before the gender-neutral term of “domestic violence” was adopted), and “wife murder” was so common that newspapers described virtually every case by that term. At long last, The Potato Masher Murder: Death at the Hands of a Jealous Husband unearths the full story of two immigrant families united by love and torn apart by domestic violence.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. STEPHEN SACCHI - SAVAGE
SAVAGE, A Journey through the Opioid Epidemic is a wild, wild ride of how one gifted young person, from a good home, got caught up in the drinking and drugging of our time, only to lose friends, to come near death himself, lose his education and shot at careers, a girl he loved, his family's hopes and respect, and then to lose faith that he could ever recover. At times funny, this book is a harrowing ordeal of how drugs and their allure will not let you go until it causes major havoc.Sacchi finally gets straight "sick and tired," as the expression goes, of the pain of not being who he really is, he stays straight. Full of compassion for those who stand by him, for friends who die from it, SAVAGE tells us more of what this addiction does than any statistic. Read it and weep and learn and bless all those who make it. Also enjoy Saachi's wit and eagle eye for all the antics he had to go through just to survive. RAY GRANT - MICHAEL O'HARE (ZODIAC KILLER INTERVIEWS #9)
Of all the notorious serial killers of the 20th century, only San Francisco’s Zodiac remains at large. A cold-blooded psycho stalking the nightmare streets of the late 1960s, he left behind at least five dead victims. The menacing sociopath sent more than two dozen letters to the newspapers, including four weird ciphers. Only the first code was cracked, and it began: I LIKE KILLING PEOPLE BECAUSE IT IS SO MUCH FUN. His last three ciphers, including the infamously unintelligible Z340, have confounded cryptographers and computer science professionals alike. But the most terrifying thing about him is that he was more than one person! The first half of ZODIAC KILLER SOLVED walks the reader through a detailed analysis of the forensics, ballistics, circumstantial evidence, and eyewitness testimony of the Zodiac crimes, and arrives at a startling conclusion:The Zodiac murders were committed by four highly proactive and extremely intellectual conspirators:1. a “trigger man” career academic who lectured on public policy at Harvard;2. a “press agent” librarian and Germanic languages scholar from Cal-Berkeley;3. a “cryptographer” statistician for the California Department of Justice; and4. the female artistic “mastermind,” a founder of the Sculptor’s Guild in NYC.The second half of ZODIAC KILLER SOLVED documents the author’s attempt to prevent a criminal catastrophe predicted by the Zodiac ciphers—The Terminus Event, an occurrence eerily similar to September 11th, 2001—in which a skyscraper in Cambridge, Massachusetts will be blown to bits, and innocent bystanders in Boston will then serve as targets for Zodiac snipers firing from a downtown rooftop. No book like ZODIAC KILLER SOLVED has ever existed, and no amount of analysis offered in any other criminal procedural, however detailed its examination may be, compares with what is put forth here in depth and scope.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. THOMAS HORAN - ZODIAC KILLER HOAX (ZODIAC KIILER INTERVIEWS #10)
This is the new, complete, single-book edition! If you previously read the three separate books, you do NOT need to buy this one again!According to the actual police department files and evidence from the original murder cases, there was no "Zodiac Killer," only some phony letters to the SF Chronicle claiming credit for some unrelated murders, followed by an exploitative book full of falsehoods by Robert Graysmith (real name: Robert Smith, Jr). This book thoroughly debunks Graysmith's 1986 book ZODIAC, explores in detail the cultural and literary environment that inspired the original Zodiac hoax, and explains what really happened in each murder, who real suspects were, what the real evidence was--and who REALLY wrote the "Zodiac Killer" letters! This new edition includes ALL THREE original books: The Great Zodiac Killer Hoax of 1986, The Great Zodiac Killer Hoax of 1969, and the Myth of the Zodiac Killer!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. MARK HEWITT - ZODIAC REVEALED (ZODIAC KILLER INTERVIEWS #5)
The Question Remains: Who is the Zodiac?Only one killer solves the riddle of the Zodiac. Theodore Kaczynski, dubbed the Unabomber, fills in the gaps of the Zodiac mystery to present the full picture of both criminal careers.Ted Kaczynski:— had experience building bombs which he threatened to use on school children as the Zodiac, and that he subsequently used to kill his victims as the Unabomber— had a psychotic break at age 24, where he convinced himself that he was free of any moral or ethical standard that would prevent him from killing anyone he chose— was a professor at UC Berkeley as the Zodiac murders began, and had easy access to all of the murder sites and victims— was a prolific letter writer whose primary mode of communication was the written word, just like the Zodiac killer— was a genius-level mathematician who was fully capable of creating the Zodiac ciphers, as demonstrated by the codes found in his cabin after his capture in 1996— as the Zodiac, acted out his plan for gaining the attention of the public that he later presented in his Unabomber manifesto— possessed the type of weapons, disguises, and margin notes that would be expected of the Zodiac serial killerThe evidence is there. The answer is Ted Kaczynski.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

ZODIAC KILLER UPDATE #8 MICHAEL BUTTERFIELD
The FBI experts were so confident that the solution was valid that the bureau would essentially close the file on the 340 cipher. “FBI is amending their original report to include our solution as the actual solution,” David reported, “Then they’ll submit it back to the San Francisco Police Department (the original requestor of assistance with the cipher in 1969).”The solution revealed a message which seemed consistent with the Zodiac’s persona and character as displayed in his previous communications, including the deciphered text of the 408 symbol cipher. In that message, the killer wrote that he was killing people in order to collect slaves to serve him during his afterlife in “paradice.” The Zodiac also included the same misspelling in text using the words “paradice” and “slaves” to form a cross. In the solution to the 340, the writer returned to this theme and declared that he was not afraid of death.I HOPE YOU ARE HAVING LOTS OF FUN IN TRYING TO CATCH ME THAT WASN’T ME ON THE TV SHOW WHICH BRINGS UP A POINT ABOUT ME I AM NOT AFRAID OF THE GAS CHAMBER BECAUSE IT WILL SEND ME TO PARADICE ALL THE SOONER BECAUSE I NOW HAVE ENOUGH SLAVES TO WORK FOR ME WHERE EVERYONE ELSE HAS NOTHING WHEN THEY REACH PARADICE SO THEY ARE AFRAID OF DEATH I AM NOT AFRAID BECAUSE I KNOW THAT MY NEW LIFE WILL BE AN EASY ONE IN PARADICE DEATHSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. JFK ASSASSINATION INTERVIEWS #5 JOAN MELLEN
Perhaps no president has a more ambiguous reputation than LBJ. A brilliant tactician, he maneuvered colleagues and turned bills into law better than anyone. But he was trailed by a legacy of underhanded dealings, from his “stolen” Senate election in 1948 to kickbacks he artfully concealed from deals engineered with Texas wheeler-dealer Billie Sol Estes and defense contractors like his longtime supporter Brown & Root. On the verge of investigation, Johnson was reprieved when he became president upon JFK's assassination. Among the remaining mysteries has been LBJ's relationship to Mac Wallace who, in 1951, shot a Texas man having an affair with LBJ's loose-cannon sister Josefa, also Wallace's lover. When arrested, Wallace cooly said "I work for Johnson…I need to get back to Washington." Charged with murder, he was overnight defended by LBJ's powerful lawyer John Cofer, and though convicted, amazingly received a suspended sentence. He then got high-security clearance from LBJ friend and defense contractor D.H. Byrd, which the Office of Naval Intelligence tried to revoke for 11 years without success.Using crucial Life magazine and Naval Intelligence files and the unredacted FBI files on Mac Wallace, never before utilized by others, investigative writer Joan Mellen skillfully connects these two disparate Texas lives and lends stark credence to the dark side of Lyndon Johnson that has largely gone unsubstantiated. JFK ASSASSINATION INTERVIEWS #4 - ROGER STONE
The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ hit the New York Times bestseller list the week of the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Consummate political insider Roger Stone makes a compelling case that Lyndon Baines Johnson had the motive, means, and opportunity to orchestrate the murder of JFK. Stone maps out the case that LBJ blackmailed his way on the ticket in 1960 and was being dumped in 1964 to face prosecution for corruption at the hands of his nemesis attorney Robert Kennedy. Stone uses fingerprint evidence and testimony to prove JFK was shot by a long-time LBJ hit man—not Lee Harvey Oswald.President Johnson would use power from his personal connections in Texas, from the criminal underworld, and from the United States government to escape an untimely end in politics and to seize even greater power. President Johnson, the thirty-sixth president of the United States, was the driving force behind a conspiracy to murder President Kennedy on November 22, 1963.In The Man Who Killed Kennedy, you will find out how and why he did it.Legendary political operative and strategist Roger Stone has gathered documents and uses his firsthand knowledge to construct the ultimate tome to prove that LBJ was not only involved in JFK’s assassination, but was in fact the mastermind.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. JFK ASSASSINATION INTERVIEWS #9 - VINCE PALAMARA
While there haven't been many Secret Service related books about U.S. presidents, the ones still in print (and even those long out of print) are often sanitized memoirs of a politically correct nature or "tell-all" tabloid historical junk meant merely for entertainment purposes. The Not-So-Secret Service provides the facts with the bark off, so to speak, and reveals politically incorrect information of a decidedly unsafe nature. It may be controversial and against the grain, but this book is heavily documented and timely, as the Secret Service guards our political candidates, foreign dignitaries, and, of course, the President, the first family and the ex-presidents and their families Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. JFK ASSASSINATION INTERVIEWS #7 - GAYLE NIX
Abraham Zapruder’s film gets all the attention, but there was another eyewitness to history whose tale has yet to be told. In this eye-opening account, Gayle Nix Jackson tells the story of her grandfather, Orville Nix, a man with a camera who happened to be on the ground for a life-changing—world-changing, and in some ways world-ending—event: the murder of President Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. The Missing JFK Assassination Film is not a typical JFK assassination book. This book does not attempt to answer the question of who killed John F. Kennedy; instead, it addresses why we should question the actions of those involved and why the truth was withheld from the people. Though copies of Orville’s film exist, the original film is missing. Why? The FBI confiscated the photographer’s camera for several months, then returned it in pieces. Were these actions sinister or were they just examples of governmental incompetence? The Missing JFK Assassination Film exposes information about the House Select Committee staff’s involvement in the missing film. The author’s interviews with people who were close to Orville shed light on the government’s involvement with the filmmaker. And her memories of growing up with her beloved grandfather—and on how his views changed after that fateful day—fuel a quest Jackson is still on to find the filmSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. JFK ASSASSINATION INTERVIEWS #6 - MAX HOLLAND
A major work of documentary history–the brilliantly edited and annotated transcripts, most of them never before published, of the presidential conversations of Lyndon B. Johnson regarding the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath. The transition from John F. Kennedy to Johnson was arguably the most wrenching and, ultimately, one of the most bitter in the nation’s history. As Johnson himself said later, “I took the oath, I became president. But for millions of Americans I was still illegitimate, a naked man with no presidential covering, a pretender to the throne….The whole thing was almost unbearable.”In this book, Max Holland, a leading authority on the assassination and longtime Washington journalist, presents the momentous telephone calls President Johnson made and received as he sought to stabilize the country and keep the government functioning in the wake of November 22, 1963. The transcripts begin on the day of the assassination, and reveal the often chaotic activity behind the scenes as a nation in shock struggled to come to terms with the momentous events. The transcripts illuminate Johnson’s relationship with Robert F. Kennedy, which flared instantly into animosity; the genuine warmth of his dealings with Jacqueline Kennedy; his contact with the FBI and CIA directors; and the advice he sought from friends and mentors as he wrestled with the painful transition. We eavesdrop on all the conversations–including those with leading journalists–that persuaded Johnson to abandon his initial plan to let Texas authorities investigate the assassination. Instead, we observe how he abruptly established a federal commission headed by a very reluctant chief justice of the Supreme Court, Earl Warren. We also learn how Johnson cajoled and drafted other prominent men–among them Senator Richard Russell (who detested Warren), Allen Dulles, John McCloy, and Gerald Ford–into serving. We see a sudden president under unimaginable pressure, contending with media frenzy and speculation on a worldwide scale. We witness the flow of inaccurate information–some of it from J. Edgar Hoover–amid rumors and theories about foreign involvement. And we glimpse Johnson addressing the mounting criticism of the Warren Commission after it released its still-controversial report in September 1964.The conversations rendered here are nearly verbatim, and have never been explained so thoroughly. No passages have been deleted except when they veered from the subject. Brought together with Holland’s commentaries, they make riveting, hugely revelatory reading. PAUL WILLIAMS - DEFINITIVE GUIDE (JACK THE RIPPER INTERVIEWS #7)
In the autumn of 1888, a serial killer known as Jack the Ripper stalked the East End of London. He was never identified, but hundreds of people were accused. Some were known to the authorities at the time, and others were named by later researchers. The truth about them, and the reasons why they came under suspicion, is often lost in a plethora of opinions and misinformation. For the first time, this book presents the evidence against 333 suspects. They include the publican who painted his dog, the first woman sentenced to the electric chair, the writer of the Red Flag, the man with a thousand convictions, Britain’s oldest Prime Minister, and many others. People from all walks of nineteenth century life, representing many different nationalities and professions. United by a link, however tenuous, to the most famous murderer in history.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hosted on Acast. NEIL STOREY - JACK THE RIPPER'S LONDON (JACK THE RIPPER )
An investigation of the evidence for links between Dracula and Jack the Ripper, containing original research and previously unpublished and rare materials/illustrations—as well as an evocative exploration of the theater and esoteric scene in 1880s LondonSince its publication in 1897, there have been suggestions that the fictional exploits of Dracula were more closely associated with Jack the Ripper than a Transylvanian Count. Historian Neil Storey provides the first British-based investigation of the sources used by Stoker and paints an evocative portrait of Stoker, his influences, friends, and the London he knew in the late 19th century. Among Stoker's group of friends, however, were dark shadows. Storey explores how Stoker created Dracula out of the climate of fear that surrounded the Jack the Ripper murders in 1888. Add to this potent combination the notion that Stoker may have known Jack the Ripper personally and hidden the clues to this terrible knowledge in his book. The premise is seductive and connects some of the giants of stage and literature of late Victorian Britain. Having gained unprecedented access to the unique archive of one of Stoker's most respected friends and the dedicatee of Dracula, Storey sheds new light on both Stoker and Dracula, and reveals startling new insights into the links between Stoker's creation and the most infamous murderer of all timeSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. TRACY I'ANSON - JACOB THE RIPPER (JACK THE RIPPER)
When playing the game of Name the Ripper, many authors start with a suspect and attempt to make them fit the facts; some can't even be proved to be in London at the time of the murders. What is required is an ordinary man local to the East End; a man who suffered mental illness, and was known to prowl the streets at night. A man with vast experience of wielding a knife in his place of work, and who had family ties to Wentworth Model Dwellings, where the only clue ever left by the killer - a bloodied portion of apron - was discovered. A man whose admission to a lunatic asylum coincided with the cessaton of the Whitechapel murders.A man like Jacob Levy.Jacob Levy came to the attention of researchers Neil and Tracy I'Anson many years ago. Their continuing research has brought new evidence to light; sifting through hundreds, if not thousands, of pages of information from various research facilities they came across new undiscovered facts that strengthened their theory, and helped piece together the life of Jacob Levy, including the startling fact that their suspect was a first cousin of Joseph Hyam Levy, the witness at Mitre Square who appeared to be shocked when spotting a man with a woman who was later identified as victim Catherine Eddowes; The Evening News reported that "Mr Levy is absolutely obstinate and refuses to give the slightest information and he leaves one to infer that he knows something but that he is afraid to be called on the inquest."JACOB THE RIPPER goes some way to explaining the movements of the Whitechapel murderer, the graffiti at Goulston Street, the actions of the police, the ‘Lipski’ link, and ultimately what happened to the murderer.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. This short read series was developed as a prequel to the “Moments in Time” series. There is an additional publicly unpublished Rainbow Reader titled “Pink: The Secret Manuscript,” which Amazon deemed unworthy for print because of its underage sexual self-discovery and evolution of an adventurous young boy, Georgie, and is the prequel to “Red: Awakenings.” If you are interested in reading “Pink: The Secret Manuscript,” it is available for purchase on Paperback only. “Pink: The Secret Manuscript” is priced as a Fundraiser for the Homeless Youth Camp. The sexually seductive stories continue to develop in the Rainbow Reader series as readers continue to comment with questions about characters. Now it’s time to tell the story about their moments in time. The Rainbow Reader “White: Educating Hayden” is about two young boys Hayden and Ian. GLENN WALL - ZODIAC MANIAC (ZODIAC KILLER SERIES)
In 2011, as author Glenn Wall began research on what became a book on the Valerie Percy murder case (Kenilworth, Illinois, 1966), he was unaware that there was a previously unnamed criminal whom the FBI considered to be a prime suspect for the murder. However, he did learn that police couldn't make anything of one piece of evidence found at the crime scene nor of two other area crime scenes whose crimes were linked to the murder. It was odd, they said. He took their word for it, and it didn't mean anything to him at the time. He never thought he’d have reason to revisit the case.He couldn't have been more wrong, and that mysterious evidence is but one reason why. Wall was aware that the suspect had moved to San Francisco in the mid 1960s, and it had crossed his mind that he could have been the notorious criminal known as the Zodiac Killer, whose killings remain unsolved. But he didn't know then that there are dozens of reasons to believe that he actually was Zodiac nor that one of the most persuasive is that unusual bit of evidence discovered at crime scenes in Winnetka and Lake Forest, Illinois, and at the Percy family's house. In addition, Wall found that the crimes the suspect committed in California further implicate him in the crimes he committed in Illinois and vice versa. Wall knew, as with many high-profile unsolved cases, that baseless rumors had surrounded the Percy case for years. None of them were true. But there was, he came to believe, a coverup—not to protect the political career of Valerie's father, Chuck Percy, nor a member of his family. No, it was to protect the careers and reputations of those who'd freed the suspect time and again. It seems a person of ordinary means who had done what he most certainly did would have been locked up early on, likely saving untold lives, though there are some mitigating circumstances involving at least one federal investigative agency. That aside, it's not a stretch to say that those powerful and connected people would have been no match for a US senator and others whose children had been brutally murdered by the maniac son of a multimillionaire. CONNOR TOWNE O'NEILL - DOWN ALONG WITH THAT DEVIL'S BONES
In Down Along with That Devil’s Bones, journalist Connor Towne O’Neill takes a deep dive into American history, exposing the still-raging battles over monuments dedicated to one of the most notorious Confederate generals, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Through the lens of these conflicts, O’Neill examines the legacy of white supremacy in America, in a sobering and fascinating work sure to resonate with readers of Tony Horwitz, Timothy B. Tyson, and Robin DiAngelo. When O’Neill first moved to Alabama, as a white Northerner, he felt somewhat removed from the racism Confederate monuments represented. Then one day in Selma, he stumbled across a group of citizens protecting a monument to Forrest, the officer who became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and whom William Tecumseh Sherman referred to as “that devil.” O’Neill sets off to visit other disputed memorials to Forrest across the South, talking with men and women who believe they are protecting their heritage, and those who have a different view of the man’s poisonous history.O’Neill’s reporting and thoughtful, deeply personal analysis make it clear that white supremacy is not a regional affliction but is in fact coded into the DNA of the entire country. Down Along with That Devil’s Bones presents an important and eye-opening account of how we got from Appomattox to Charlottesville, and where, if we can truly understand and transcend our past, we could be headed nextSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. ROD SADLER - KILLING WOMEN
"Rod Sadler takes us through the twisted world of a serial killer, in a labor of love that pays respect to those lives the monster destroyed and reminding us why they should never be forgotten and he should never be free." - Dave Schrader, host of Darkness Radio and True Crime Tuesday, and host of The Travel Channel's 'The Holzer Files'Will A Serial Killer Soon Walk The Streets Again?Don Miller was quiet and reserved. As a former youth pastor, he seemed a devout Christian. No one would have ever suspected that the recent graduate of the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice was a serial killer. However, when Miller was arrested for the attempted murder of two teenagers in 1978, police quickly realized he was probably responsible for the disappearances of four women. Offered a still-controversial plea bargain, he led police to the bodies of the missing women. Now, after forty years in prison, Miller has served his time and is due to be released into an unsuspecting population. In KILLING WOMEN, author Rodney Sadler examines the crimes, the “justice” meted out, and the impending freedom of a man nationally renowned psychiatrist Dr. Frank Ochberg wrote:“… is a member of a small, deadly, dangerous population: murderers who stalk, capture, torture and kill; murderers who derive sexual and narcissistic gratification from their predation; murderers who maintain a ‘mask of sanity’ appearing normal and harmless.”Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Isabelle hears relentless sounds coming from the attic above her room, and the ever-present cries of small children scream in her head almost constantly.
