Ep 689Lessons Without the Leash
There’s a different kind of bond between a handler and a police K9—one built on long hours, shared risk, and a level of trust you don’t fully understand until you’ve lived it. In this episode, we’re not talking about deployments or war stories. We’re talking about the lessons that stick with you long after the dog retires. How our dogs can read us before you even make a move. How they pick up on things you don’t realize you’re showing. And how learning from that kind of awareness can make you better—not just as a handler, but as a hunter, trainer, and person. Because if you pay attention, those dogs will teach you more than you ever taught them. Ep 688GTTD - The Amazing Little Ann
This episode features the owners of the current PKC World Coonhound Champion Willy’s Little Ann. Fresh off her latest in an amazing string of major wins including the UKC World Championship and the Tournament of Champions, Little Ann is writing a chapter in the coonhound record book that may never be duplicated. In this episode John Strickland, Ashley Oxendine and Randy Smith, three of the four partners that own the reining world champion in two major registries, join Steve to tell Ann’s story to our listeners. Partnerships in the dog world are rarely successful and often are more of a business deal than a friendship. Not so with these guys. Each tells their personal versions of Ann’s story and illustrates that partners can be successful and have a close personal relationship at the same time. These guys care about their hound and they care each about the other and it shows. This is a don’t miss listen and easily makes the list of best efforts by the Gone To The Dogs Podcasts to date. Ep 686Spring Woods, Dogs, Turkeys and Trout
Spring is finally showing up and it’s a great time to be in the woods. In this episode we talk about working hounds during the offseason, getting dogs back in shape, and keeping young dogs learning even after hunting season ends. We also discuss ** Turkey season right around the corner and what to look for while scouting the woods this time of year. Plus, a little fishing talk — the river has been kicking my butt lately, but the trout streams have been producing some nice Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout. Ep 685GTTD - Coon Hunting In The 70s
In this episode Steve covers topics that resonate with hunters that have been involved with the sport for several years as well as those that may be new comers to the sport. After raising the question in last week’s episode, “Who is the best coonhound pup trainer in the world,” Steve reviews several responses posted by members of his online Coon Hunting Conversations group. The segment segues into a discussion of the members of Steve’s local coon club in the 1970’s and recalls the names and the brief bios of 43 of those members! It’s a trip down memory lane for the host and a interesting introduction to a family of coon hunters that some listeners may recall. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 684The Tailgate Test: What Your Hounds Really Did This Season
The season may be over, but the work of becoming a better houndsman is just beginning. In this episode, we take a hard, honest look at post-season evaluation—what your hounds actually showed you this year versus what you hoped they were doing. Every race, every loss, every cold trail tells a story. The hunters who improve year after year are the ones willing to sit on the tailgate after the season and ask the tough questions. We break down how to evaluate your pack honestly, what traits you should be looking for, and how those observations should guide your off-season training plans. Spring isn’t just the end of hunting—it’s the beginning of building better hounds. Ep 683GTTD - Of Hounds and Horses
This week Steve dons his racing silks and takes the listener to 800-horse two-year old thoroughbred sale in Ocala, Florida for a day of education and inspiration. Rarely does he do anything that doesn’t bring him full circle to his world of working dogs. The world of coon hunting, especially concerning the animals that are central to the sport, has many parallels to the horse-racing game. We extoll the value of breeding and proof of ancestry through pedigrees for dogs and horses, we value reproduction success and keep records of performance of the offspring by listing wins, earnings and titles on registration documents. But, rounding the clubhouse turn and heading home, the ponies stretch out the lead in terms of providing the information and vehicle to move the top-performers into the winner’s circle. With thoroughbred racing, breeders, trainers and owners are privy to a plethora of information in print and online that coonhound enthusiasts can only dream about.. Steve’s visit to a sale of national prominence held in an unrivaled venue allows him to fantasize about the possibilities of the same type of program for coonhounds and ends with the question, “Who is the best coonhound trainer in the world?” We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 682Buddy and Ross , and Coursing Bill and controversial social media posts
EThis episode dives into the complexities of legislation affecting dog sports, the impact of social media on public perception, and strategies for advocacy. Guests discuss recent bills targeting greyhound racing and coursing, the role of social media in shaping opinions, and how hunters and dog owners can navigate these challenges. In this episode, Buddy Woodberry and Ross delve into the complexities of social media, content moderation, and the future of hunting communities online. They explore how algorithms and platform policies impact hunters, the risks of relying on social media for building followings, and potential solutions for maintaining hunting culture in the digital age. Ep 680GTTD - The Coon Hunter’s Handbook
In this episode Steve addresses the changes in the way coon hunters acquire information by reviewing two books written in 1948 and 1952 respectively. The American Trail Hound by Fred Streaver and The Coon Hunter’s Handbook by Leon F. Whitney, DVM and Acil B. Underwood were two important works designed to make the training of coonhounds a successful experience 75 years or so ago. Steve finds the more things change the more they stay the same as the methods of three-quarters of a century ago appear similar to the methods coon hunters use in training dogs today. The episode also includes a tribute to a special friend who recently passed to the vast timbers and river bottoms of his eternal home, Hoosier houndsman and tree dog enthusiast George Danielson. Ep 678GTTD Revisited - Larry Meeks
It’s old home week on the Gone to the Dogs podcast as Steve connects with his longtime friend and former boss, Larry Meeks. Meeks was the owner and served as CEO for Professional Kennel Club for thirteen years following his purchase of the popular coonhound registry in the fall of 1997. Fielder joined the organization in June of 1998 and served as its Senior Vice President through November of 2004. Conversation flows freely as Fielder urges Meeks to recall his meager upbringing in and around the Terre Haute, Indiana area. It’s a Horatio Alger story of a kid raised by a single parent, his dad, that was largely left to his own devices until he discovered his affinity to all things involving trucks. Meeks and his son Jeremy own and operate Gibco Motor Express, one of the nation’s top commodity haulers that haul, in Meeks’ words, everything from coal to bread. Meeks coon hunting background and an early affiliation with PKC led him to purchase the registry and catapult it into a thriving business in his 13-year tenure. He and Fielder relive the days and nights at the Tennis Center at Ken Lake State Park in West Kentucky where the Super Stakes and World Hunt were held back-to-back in a ten-day coon hunting marathon. Stories, some that include an inside look at the workings of a major coon hunting organization, abound in this entertaining episode. Enjoy. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 677Testing out the eSEEK GPS Tracking System
In this extended roundtable discussion, Buddy Woodberry, Ross, and Bracken Gittins explore the evolving world of GPS tracking systems for houndsmen. The conversation centers around real-world use, field expectations, and what serious dog hunters actually need from their equipment. They discuss user experience and interface design, map responsiveness, screen navigation, and how handheld performance matters in high-pressure moments. The group also raises broader questions about training philosophy, tone versus stimulation use, and how correction timing can impact dogs with different temperaments. Other topics include tracking reliability in rough terrain, antenna performance, battery life in changing weather conditions, compass accuracy, geofencing capabilities, app integration, and the role of SIM or cellular connectivity. They also consider practical concerns like sharing tracking information between hunters, managing multiple dogs, and how systems perform when pushed under real hunting conditions. Throughout the episode, the focus remains on thoughtful evaluation rather than brand loyalty. The central theme is simple: What does a modern tracking system need to deliver for working houndsmen, and how should new technology be measured in the field? Ep 676Cold Weather Care
When the temperature drops, real houndsman don’t stop. We just have to adjust. In this episode we’re breaking down why winter care matters more than most handlers realize. From how frozen ground steals body heat to why elevation and dry bedding can make or break your kennel setup, we’re covering the fundamentals that keep your pack healthy, strong, and ready to hunt. Cold doesn’t harm dogs, poor preparation does. Ep 673GTTD - UKC Winter Classic – Part One
In this episode we join Steve along a Florida highway on his road trip to the Winter Classic in Batesville, Mississippi. It’s day one of the trip and Steve records from the truck on US Highway 19 along the Gulf of America. The solo conversation is part history, part geography as Steve recalls the origins of the Winter Classic and plays tour guide along one of Florida’s least used highways along the famed Nature Coast. Here’s a chance to ride along with Steve on one of his many road trips to attend major coon hunting events across the nation. Ep 672Shop Talk | Non-Resident Lion Tags & Quotas
EBuddy, Ross Ellwanger, Kody Lohstroh (Colorado), and Stephan Roaque (Wyoming) dig into the growing tension around non-resident hunting pressure, rapidly increasing tag costs, and how different states are managing (or mismanaging) mountain lion harvest. The conversation starts with out-of-state limitations and quickly pivots to Colorado’s non-resident lion tag jumping to ~$825, what drove it, and what downstream effects it could have on neighboring states.Along the way, they unpack why houndsmen often get labeled as “extreme” while actually sitting in the practical middle: not “kill every predator” and not “save every predator,” but manage populations responsibly—including hard conversations about female harvest, quota structures, pursuit seasons, mentorship, and political realities. The episode closes with a gear-heads-up about Garmin TT15 collar support ending soon and a quick warning on Oregon’s IP 28 animal-cruelty initiative language that could impact hunting, trapping, and rodeo exemptions. In this episode Heath is going to walk us through the sets of bill making and get us up to speed on where all three bills are at this stage and what's next. Ep 670GTTD - Coonhounds and Cabin Fever
Thirty-five degrees in Miami, Florida? Headlines read “Freezing in Florida: Artic chill reaches Sunshine State, breaking records and causing power disruptions.”Steve takes the opportunity to check on friends that are coping with the chilling effects of a Polar Vortex that is causing hunters across the country to stay by the fire. In many cases hunters are bringing in the hounds in order to cope with what has become one of the harshest winters in memory, even for octogenarian hunters like Pennsylvania’s Fred Moran, the Redbone Man who will be 89 when this podcast airs.Steve checks in on Fred and finds him in the throes of a three-week layoff from coon hunting, something he normally does nightly. Fred sounds a little rough but the dog talk begins to flow as the friends talk about the weather, old dogs, old trucks, old friends and stories, old and new, all framed in the hope that better days are coming. This is an episode for those experiencing the effects of cabin fever on steroids the last few days. We’re hoping the stories, the laughs and the optimism will help to cure the fever in your neck of the woods. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 669Wiley Coyote
We’ve all had an off game race or two, but coyotes pose a challenge that requires time and effort to overcome. First we must understand why they are so captivating to our hounds. This episode compares the similarities of both races and what draws the hounds into a full blown dog race that tests the patience of a saint. Ep 668GTTD: HOUND DOGGIN’ IN WEST VIRGINIA WITH GARY KNAPP
Gary Knapp says he’s married to the prettiest girl in Big Scary, West Virginia. Steve calls him the Will Rogers of the Appalachians. Bear hunters remember him as an effective president and spokes person for the West Virginia Bear Hunter’s Association. Part woodsman, mountaineer and houndsman, Knapp never fails to entertain with his stories and likewise, never fails to inspire with his dedication to keeping the sport of hound hunting alive for future generations.Knapp believes upcoming changes to West Virginia laws concerning hunting over bait will be detrimental to the bear population. Steve tends to take the middle ground on the issue but the conversation is no less important to anyone that is concerned with the continuance of black bear hunting in the Mountain State as it reveals all sides of the issue.Enjoy talk from two mountain men, one in memory, the other in action, as Gone To The Dogs goes hound doggin’ with West Virginian Gary Knapp.West Virginia Bills for Your AttentionHB 4688 and HB4559 We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 665GTTD - SHUCKIN’ THE CORN WITH FRED BRIGHT
When old friends get together, the stories can’t help but be told. In the case of the pair of coon hunting friends on this podcast, the stories go back to the days when Steve and guest Fred Bright began hunting, Steve in the mountains of West Virginia and Fred in the mountains of east Tennessee. It’s been a year since Bright made his first guest appearance and he brought a whole new set of experiences to the podcast studio. The boys cover coonhounds and beagles with equal shares of recollections of hounds and hunts long since gone. Bright is a great story teller with amazing recall and his tales never disappoint. From Black and Tan Coonhounds that lost their voices to beagles that refused to compete, here’s an hour of hound talk in the best Gone To The Dogs tradition. Enjoy! Ep 663GTTD - Mining for Gold
In this episode Steve charts the course for future episodes by revealing the basic tenets the has built his long and winding journey as a houndsman upon. This is the basis for his knowledge of hounds and hunting and reveal how his experiences will be used as the basis for future podcast programming going forward. A houndsman by heritage and choice, Steve began his journey with tree dogs, incredibly, seventy-two years ago when he was a boy of eight. His journey has taken him through roles as pleasure hunter, hobby breeder, student of means through which to breed better dogs, applying that knowledge to his own breeding efforts, competition hunter, registry official and rule authority, book author and magazine columnist, web producer and ultimately host of the Gone To The Dogs Podcast, all centered firmly upon tree dogs. The episode contains several nuggets designed to help the listener on the journey, no matter at which station along the track he or she finds themselves. Ep 660GTTD - A New Year’s Rant
Fresh off his annual New Year’s trip to South Carolina to attend the Grand American Coon Hunt, Steve takes the opportunity to unload some baggage he brought back from the competition events. With a background in registry administration, Steve fully understands the challenges the registries face in maintaining enthusiasm for their events, often on a playing field that can appear to be anything but level at times. Games must have participants and Steve fears today’s climate may be discouraging more players than it encourages. In this episode Steve confesses that the system designed by the game’s founders may not be working in today’s climate. The old hunter challenges the powers that be to come up with solutions that put honor back in the game, that rewards the best hound rather than the best argument from the most talented lawyer on the cast. Listeners, depending on which camp they find themselves, purist or pugilist, will at least enjoy hearing the old man bump his blood pressure up a degree or two. In this one, Steve has gone looking for ways to bring out our best when the worst seems so easy to do. We would like to thank those who support this podcast. Ep 658GTTD - What Difference Does It Make?
In this episode Steve and Nubbin invite a brand, spanking new coon hunter to the microphone in an enjoyable conversation with ten-year old Brantley Whittle. Brantley became interested in coon hunting after reading Wilson Rawls’ classic Where The Red Fern Grows as have so many children through the ages since Rawls penned the story of Old Dan and Little Ann in 1961. The parallels in age between the book’s Billy Coleman and Brantley Whittle, Coleman is ten when the story begins and Whittle is ten now, open the door for an interesting discussion on the mindset of boys that age as they enter the sport for the first time. In our discussion we learn that Whittle sought, through the help of our Nubbin Moore, a female Redbone pup with which to start his journey because, as was Little Ann, the females were thought to be smarter. This episode will refresh the memories of youth for older hunters and will spark a desire to join the fun for novice hunters Brantley’s age and beyond. Ep 650GTTD - Dunlap Times Three
This week Steve entertains a trio of coon hunters from Ohio that have become some of the most recognizable and respected hunters in game as breeders, trainers and successful competitors. The Dunlap brothers, Chuck and Don, were born in the adjoining county of Fayette in West Virginia, next door to Raleigh County where Steve was born. Their family migrated to central Ohio where the Dunlaps established themselves as young me to be serious coon hunters. Chuck’s son Coleton, affectionately known as Coonman, has followed in his dad’s and his uncle’s footsteps, earning a respected name for himself as well. Chuck formed his reputation as a successful handler in the early days of his career, the mid 1980s, by handling a famous English stud dog named GRNITECH Baron’s Blue Reb, known far and wide as Lumis. Lumis, a crossbred Treeing Walker hound by today’s standards, was registered as English. He was owned by Carl Carroll of Crestline, Ohio and Roger W. Daron of Plymouth, Ohio, and handled by Chuck Dunlap. The conversation moves from Lumis to the Buck Creek Treeing Walker hounds for which the Dunlaps are well-known today. Hounds like two-time AKC World Champion Buck Creek Mr. Smith, Buck Creek Crowson and Buck Creek Homer, as well as others, fill the episode. This is a story of one family’s love for coon hunting and for each other. It is well worth your time. We would like to thank those who support this podcast.
