In this episode Steve addresses the changes in the way coon hunters acquire information by reviewing two books written in 1948 and 1952 respectively. The American Trail Hound by Fred Streaver and The Coon Hunter’s Handbook by Leon F. Whitney, DVM and Acil B. Underwood were two important works designed to make the training of coonhounds a successful experience 75 years or so ago. Steve finds the more things change the more they stay the same as the methods of three-quarters of a century ago appear similar to the methods coon hunters use in training dogs today. It’s old home week on the Gone to the Dogs podcast as Steve connects with his longtime friend and former boss, Larry Meeks. Meeks was the owner and served as CEO for Professional Kennel Club for thirteen years following his purchase of the popular coonhound registry in the fall of 1997. Fielder joined the organization in June of 1998 and served as its Senior Vice President through November of 2004. Conversation flows freely as Fielder urges Meeks to recall his meager upbringing in and around the Terre Haute, Indiana area. It’s a Horatio Alger story of a kid raised by a single parent, his dad, that was largely left to his own devices until he discovered his affinity to all things involving trucks. Meeks and his son Jeremy own and operate Gibco Motor Express, one of the nation’s top commodity haulers that haul, in Meeks’ words, everything from coal to bread. Meeks coon hunting background and an early affiliation with PKC led him to purchase the registry and catapult it into a thriving business in his 13-year tenure. He and Fielder relive the days and nights at the Tennis Center at Ken Lake State Park in West Kentucky where the Super Stakes and World Hunt were held back-to-back in a ten-day coon hunting marathon. Thirty-five degrees in Miami, Florida? When old friends get together, the stories can’t help but be told. Fresh off his annual New Year’s trip to South Carolina to attend the Grand American Coon Hunt, Steve takes the opportunity to unload some baggage he brought back from the competition events.With a background in registry administration, Steve fully understands the challenges the registries face in maintaining enthusiasm for their events, often on a playing field that can appear to be anything but level at times. Games must have participants and Steve fears today’s climate may be discouraging more players than it encourages.In this episode Steve confesses that the system designed by the game’s founders may not be working in today’s climate. The old hunter challenges the powers that be to come up with solutions that put honor back in the game, that rewards the best hound rather than the best argument from the most talented lawyer on the cast. In this episode Steve and Nubbin invite a brand, spanking new coon hunter to the microphone in an enjoyable conversation with ten-year old Brantley Whittle. Brantley became interested in coon hunting after reading Wilson Rawls’ classic Where The Red Fern Grows as have so many children through the ages since Rawls penned the story of Old Dan and Little Ann in 1961. The parallels in age between the book’s Billy Coleman and Brantley Whittle, Coleman is ten when the story begins and Whittle is ten now, open the door for an interesting discussion on the mindset of boys that age as they enter the sport for the first time. In our discussion we learn that Whittle sought, through the help of our Nubbin Moore, a female Redbone pup with which to start his journey because, as was Little Ann, the females were thought to be smarter. This episode will refresh the memories of youth for older hunters and will spark a desire to join the fun for novice hunters Brantley’s age and beyond. In this episode Steve and Nubbin talk about Christmas, past and present.It’s a fun walk down memory lane for a couple of guys that have witnessed more than 160 Christmases in their combined earthy journey. The pair spins several tales of Christmases past in Alabama and West Virginia that will amuse and entertain. Nubbin’s wife Becky is still quite the entertainer with plans for more than thirty adults and their kids to invade the Sterrett, Ala., homestead at her gathering this year. Steve and Ella take a more subtle approach to what is a favorite time of year, choosing a small, family-oriented holiday celebration. The second part of the episode features guest Danny Jones of Rockwell, North Carolina. Danny is promoting a new coon hunt in an old familiar location. The Carolina Classic on January 23 – 24, will be held in Salisbury, North Carolina at the familiar Rowan County Fairgrounds where Southeastern Treeing Walker Days was held for many years. Danny heads the Trapp Hill Coon Hunters Association that will host the event. This week Steve entertains a trio of coon hunters from Ohio that have become some of the most recognizable and respected hunters in game as breeders, trainers and successful competitors. The Dunlap brothers, Chuck and Don, were born in the adjoining county of Fayette in West Virginia, next door to Raleigh County where Steve was born. Their family migrated to central Ohio where the Dunlaps established themselves as young me to be serious coon hunters. Chuck’s son Coleton, affectionately known as Coonman, has followed in his dad’s and his uncle’s footsteps, earning a respected name for himself as well. Chuck formed his reputation as a successful handler in the early days of his career, the mid 1980s, by handling a famous English stud dog named GRNITECH Baron’s Blue Reb, known far and wide as Lumis. Lumis, a crossbred Treeing Walker hound by today’s standards, was registered as English. He was owned by Carl Carroll of Crestline, Ohio and Roger W. Daron of Plymouth, Ohio, and handled by Chuck Dunlap. The conversation moves from Lumis to the Buck Creek Treeing Walker hounds for which the Dunlaps are well-known today. Hounds like two-time AKC World Champion Buck Creek Mr. Smith, Buck Creek Crowson and Buck Creek Homer, as well as others, fill the episode.
