Show Notes

John Monroe is a household word in the coon hunting world, especially in the Treeing Walker breed. Jim Merchant, Joe House and Monroe are the three most famous hunters that ever entered a Night Hunt, advertised a stud dog or bred a litter of Treeing Walker pups.

When John Monroe gave $3500 for an eight-year old dog that would become one of the most famous in Treeing Walker history, the immortal Finley River Chief, he bought Chief because the hound’s son, Finley River Spot, was sterile.  Monroe had bought Spot for $2000 and only realized the dog was missing females after he won the prestigious ACHA World Championship.

This episode is John Monroe’s story of Chief, Spot, Finley River Joe and a host of other famous hounds as told by John himself.  It’s a story of determination and longevity if nothing else, but there’s so much more.

Monroe is still coon hunting and breeding Treeing Walker hounds at eighty-two years of age. Listen as he tells the remarkable story of his experiences with the iconic line of Treeing Walker hounds known the coon hunting world over as Finley River.
