Obesity is an epidemic problem with domesticated horses. We often attribute the problem to overfeeding concentrates combined with too little exercise, the underlying cause is much less apparent and has to do with the horse’s brain and response to stress. Dr. Getty says when a horse realizes that he is safe and that forage is available, he slows down his eating, eats less, and maintains a healthy body condition. Double Gold! Meet two Olympians who love and care for their horses, hands on. Will Simpson has never slowed down and competes at the highest levels on talented horses after decades in show jumping. Will won gold at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing with the United States team jumping with McLain Ward, Laura Kraut and Beezie Madden. And Riding the mare Bally Cor, Tad Coffin won Individual and Team Gold medals at the Pan American Games in Mexico in 1975 and repeated this success at the Montreal Olympic Games the following year.
