Ep 553Dolly Dearest (1991)
EYou’re not gonna believe this, but we’re talking killer dolls this week and it’s not a Matt pick. After years of will-they-won’t-they, we are finally discussing DOLLY DEAREST (1991), brought to us all by Kyle of all people. It’s got a possessed doll, it’s got an ancient curse, it’s got bad acting, it’s got Rip Torn as an archeologist - some might say it’s a perfect movie for this show. Why we took over a decade to tackle it is anyone’s guess, but here we are and we may not make it out of this toy factory alive… Help! Ep 552The Sect (1991)
EDo you think we’ve watched enough Argento this spring? If you said no, then you’re in luck, because we have another dose of Italian weirdness with 1991’s THE SECT (aka THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER)! Co-written and produced by Dario Argento, this also taps another HMN favorite, Michele Saovi, as director - and as an added bonus, stars Kelly Curtis. If you knew that Jamie Lee had a sister who was also an actor, then you’re smarter than us. It’s a Satanic cult movie, you know we had a good time with this one. Ready to join up? Ep 551976-Evil (1988)
EIt’s the late 80s and Robert frickin' Englund is coming out with his directorial debut, there’s definitely no way this movie can be boring, right? Well… may we point out the slog that is 976-EVIL (1988)? While there are some fun scenes to be had, the movie is kind of a bland retread of EVILSPEAK but with the computer swapped for a demonic phone service, and no badass sword. You do still get some fun quips with your evisceration though, so it’s not a total wash! Ep 550Suspiria (1977)
EIt’s our 550th episode, time to class up this joint a little with a genre favorite - Dario Argento’s SUSPIRIA (1977)! Who doesn’t love a little giallo action about ballerinas and witches, with a side of maggots and some barbed wire tumbling? The plot may be inscrutable at times, but what it lacks in logic it more than makes up for in style. Come on, let’s dance! Ep 549Crimson Peak (2015)
EBased on its title, it may be inferred that CRIMSON PEAK (2015) is about vampires - the logic is sound, if somewhat flawed. This was Kyle’s logic when he chose it for us to discuss, as he had never seen it before, so he was quite perplexed when the bloodsucking never happened and ghosts are floating around instead. Can you imagine how sick this movie would be if it WAS about vampires, though? Ep 548Scream 4 (2011)
ENailing the coffin shut on Franchise February, we make our way back to a beloved series to see how it’s aged. The answer? Better than most of Sidney Prescott’s friends and family but honestly, that’s not too hard because most of them end up skewered. SCREAM 4 (2011) was such a step up from its predecessor that some of us may have been blind to its missteps but it’s still got some charm to it. Ep 547Texas Chainsaw 3D (2012)
EWe are just slicing right through Franchise February and have found ourselves in the armpit of Texas as we inherit our grandmother’s mansion. Too bad we didn’t read the letter she left for us, because if he had, we would’ve spared everyone from TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D (2013). Too late now - Leatherface is on the loose in the Halloween carnival and the town is kind of taking it in strides, really. Probably not a conspiracy between the mayor and police, right? Thankfully blood is thicker than water so we can enjoy Alexandra Daddario saying, “Do your thing, cuz!” Join our Patreon Buy Some Merch Join our Facebook Group Follow us on Instagram Check our Letterboxd Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 546Friday the 13th (2009)
EA Friday the 13th during Franchise February? You know we had to go back 17 years to the day for a rewatch of FRIDAY THE 13TH (2009). It’s not a particularly good movie, but as Matt points out, it might be the best F13 sequel we got post-JASON LIVES, but that’s a pretty low bar to begin with. Ep 545Hellraiser (1987)
EIt’s cold and snowy out, why not stay in and work on a puzzle? There’s this weird box we can’t seem to get open and it’s tearing us apart to find out what’s inside… Welcome to Franchise February, which we’re kicking off with an all-time favorite that we somehow never discussed until now - the original HELLRAISER (1987)! It’s incredible to think that we did almost every other entry in the series before the movie that kicked it off, but that might be because it’s pretty perfect and the sequels are a bit hit-or-miss. We wasted all our good suffering on those movies so we could enjoy this one together! Ep 544Riki-O The Story of Ricky (1991)
EMatt takes us off the beaten path once again with the splatter-packed kung fu film Riki-O the Story of Ricky! Ep 543Decoys (2004)
EThere’s nothing quite like an early 2000s hot-alien-girls-at-college movie during a massive snowstorm, and that’s exactly what your boys here at HMN have on the syllabus for you this week. When you consider the fact that DECOYS (2004) is set in January in Canada, the absence of nude alien women makes a lot more sense, but tell that to the guys renting this one from Blockbuster back in the day. What it lacks in skin it makes up for in millenial humor, so we can’t be too upset about the watch…right? Ep 542Mirror Mirror II: Raven Dance (1994)
EWe had so much fun last year with its predecessor, we decided to get right to killer mirror sequel no one asked for early on in 2026. MIRROR MIRROR 2: RAVEN DANCE (1994) isn’t a good movie, but it definitely has its moments, from the on-screen antics of Roddy McDowell and William Sanderson, to some delightfully silly murders and fatal accidents. Oh, and we have to mention that this was Mark Ruffalo’s film debut! So basically it’s got everything. Take a look with us, why don’t you? Ep 541Anaconda (1997)
EIf you’re even a casual listener, you probably already know the drill: giant killer animal on the loose? It’s a Matt pick. For our first host-chosen movie of the year, we’re lazy rivering down the Amazon with a psychotic Jon Voight doing the worst damn accent you’ve ever heard. It’s ANACONDA (1997) time, baby! There’s also JLo, Ice Cube and Eric Stoltz, but this is really about the love between a crazy white guy and a very hungry 40 foot snake. Ep 540The Mask (1994)
EOur annual Black Friday poll was as unhinged as usual, with the clear winner being 1994’s THE MASK. It’s always shocking to remember that this was Jim Carrey’s breakout role and Cameron Diaz’s first acting role. These factoids are mainly drowned out by the unforgettable swing revival soundtrack (wall to wall bangers, btw) and the dozens and dozens of quotes we all beat to death in junior high after watching this. Don’t worry, though, we actually go the entire episode not doing any Stanley Ipkiss impressions. Is this personal growth? We’d like to think so! Ep 539Christmas Evil (1980)
EMerry Killsmas from another white guy who took his job at a toy factory way too seriously and decided he would be the one to punish every scrooge he runs into. CHRISTMAS EVIL (1980) isn’t just another Santa rampage movie, it was the second feature-length slasher featuring Big Red, coming out 11 months after TO ALL A GOODNIGHT (1980). The trope might feel well-trod in this day and age, but go back 45 years and boy oh boy did this concept get the pearls clutched. Travel with us to simpler time when kids wanted nothing more under the tree than toy soldiers with stabby tips and Santa groping their mom. Happy holidays! Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 538Misery (1990)
EThe snow is falling, the logs are crackling on the fire, and Kathy Bates is about to break your ankles so you can’t escape her love. Also, you better rewrite your whole novel while writhing in excruciating pain. MISERY (1990) has a reputation which precedes it, as does our host this week, friend and author Erik J. Brown! Of course we would have a writer come on to discuss how bad it would suck to be in James Caan’s shoes. Baby it’s cold outside (but you might not want to come in)! Ep 537Sint (2010)
EThe holiday season is in full swing, so why wouldn’t we watch a 15-year-old Dutch Christmas horror movie? SINT (2010) follows an undead evil Santa with a burned face and a badass cane that he uses to decapitate people. On top of learning about evil Dutch Santa, you will find that blackface is apparently a socially-acceptable thing in that part of the world, which is definitely way more disturbing than a killer Santa. For the folks who whinge about subtitles, fear not - this one is dubbed in hilariously bad fashion, so you won’t have to read. Hold onto your Netherlands, it’s Horror Movie Night! Ep 536Death Race 2000 (1975)
EDid you wake up today think the HMN boys were going to watch a 50-year-old dystopian scifi movie starring David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone that’s creepily prescient of what 2025 would look like? Neither did we, but here we are discussing DEATH RACE 2000 (1975). In a future America, the President is a worthless politician spending his days in Moscow, is more of a TV personality than statesman, and has created a gladiator-style race where the drivers kayfabe their way across the country running people over for points. Oh almost forgot, a huge part of the country is apparently Nazi lovers. Sound familiar? Listen to us enumerate how depressingly accurate these predictions really are. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 535Frostbiter (1995)
EWe all love Troma ‘round these parts, but we often forget that Uncle Lloydie’s more than a director - he’s also a distributor of tons of underground films. Most are objectively bad, but not FROSTBITER (1990), this one is a total party. Take equal parts Raimi and Harryhausen, throw them in a pot and simmer for 8 (!) years, and you got yourself some chili… Better write 2 (!) original joke songs about said chili and use them for chili demon battles in your movie. It sounds insane, it is insane, it’s also incredibly entertaining and full of charm. Let’s go fishin' y’all! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 534Playroom (1990)
EDid you know Jackie Earle Haley wrote a horror movie after his child acting career ended and Shooter McGavin played the main character whose invisible friend drives him crazy? Oh don’t lie to us, we know you weren’t hip to the wonders found in PLAYROOM (1990), but that’s why this show exists - we find the hidden treasure for you! If you like Italian horror shots, this one’s for you; if you like man-goes-mad tropes, this one’s for you; if you like monster puppetry…. THIS ONE’S FOR YOU. We’ve been waiting since we were kids to have you sit on our circular saw throne, let’s play! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 533Predator 2 (1990)
EWe got a two-fer this week - a movie so illustrious it’s celebrating both its 35 year anniversary AND a new entry in its franchise that may or may not be good. We don’t know yet, and frankly, this series has left some otherworldly stinkers in its wake… but we’re here for it anyway. PREDATOR 2 (1990) is a bullet-laden ode to what Republicans thought cities were really like in the late 80s; the sad part is that they still think cities are just nonstop shootouts between courageous cops and well-armed drug cartels. Time is a flat circle, y’all. At least this particular stop in history has Dan Glover and Bill Paxton visibly sweating for close to 2 hours straight. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 532Land of the Dead (2005)
EIt’s a year of just anniversaries, so Kyle decided to hit us with a John Leguizamo + Dennis Hopper combo under the direction of George Romero. Congrats to LAND OF THE DEAD (2005) on twenty years, we guess? Regardless of how well it has aged in the past 2 decades since release, LOTD had some good financials and was a chance for Romero to get back to his zombie chronicles, and again, the value of that is up for discussion. Ep 531The Witches (1990)
EEvery Halloween, we pick a kid-friendly horror movie from our childhood and take a cute, trauma-reviving trip down memory lane. This year, we went with none other than Roald Dahl’s THE WITCHES (1990), celebrating 35 years of Anjelica Huston tearing off her wig and face, to the terror of many a Gen X and elder millennial child in the 90s. Being scared is part of growing up, let’s relive it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 530Proteus (1995)
EWhere would this show be without forgotten Thing ripoffs boasting 3 minutes of Doug Bradley in full head makeup choking on tentacles that look like humongous earthworms? In honor (we guess) of its 30-year anniversary, the boys were once again talked into discussing a movie none of them had seen before by friend of the show/past guest Benji, the one and only PROTEUS (1995)! Based on the book SLIMER by Harry Adam Knight, the film version borrows as much from Raimi as it does Carpenter, to varying degrees of success. It’s all worth it for the last 15 minutes of absolute ridiculousness. Come on, we’re investigating this creepy abandoned oil rig with our fanny pack full of drugs - what could go wrong? Ep 529The Funhouse Massacre (2015)
EOf all the Matt Kelly picks that Matt Kelly has ever picked for this show, THE FUNHOUSE MASSACRE (2015) is definitely up there as a certified MATT KELLY PICK - it’s a somewhat obscure slasher from a decade ago set on Halloween in a funhouse staffed by a colorful list of deranged serial killers! Robert Englund for one day of shooting! Clint Howard as a psychotic but apologetic human taxidermist! Blood! Guts! Slapstick comedy! Westler guy wearing a clown killer’s face skin! Ep 528City of the Living Dead (1980)
EZombies are on our mind this week as we dive into part 1 of the Gates of Hell Trilogy thanks to Kyle! While this isn't Scott's first experience with the film, it is Matt and Kyles and we are floored by how fun it is (when it's not slow as a zombie)! Ep 527Night of the Scarecrow (1995)
EIt’s finally October, and there is likely no better way for us to kick off the finest month of the year than to discuss a very silly killer scarecrow movie that has sadly been mostly forgotten in the 30 years since its release - 1995’s NIGHT OF THE SCARECROW! If you need any sort of explanation for why this is prime HMN fodder, look no further than people dying from magical straw spewing from every orifice, a guy getting threshed to death by his own farm equipment, and of course a pilgrim sex orgy flashback. This one was hard to come by, so we’re hoping the HMN Effect gets it a proper Blu-ray release soon. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 526Pagan Invasion: Halloween - Trick or Treat? (1990)
ERounding our Listener Submitted Month is a bit different film than our usual on the show, but still hits a lot of the same questionable beats so dammit, you’re going to listen to us deconstruct PAGAN INVASION VOLUME 1: HALLOWEEN - TRICK OR TREAT (1990). Shameless church propaganda from the first Satanic Panic (we are living through the second round currently), this one has more lies stuffed in its 47 minute runtime than candy in a boo bucket after hitting the rich people neighborhoods… You’d think the police would’ve followed up on the one guy’s assertions that he was part of a demon child trafficking sex cult if any of what he said was true, right? At least the theme song rips. If you grew up celebrating Family Fun Night while all your classmates were doing normal Halloween stuff, this one’s for you, you hopeless weirdo. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 525Beyond Darkness (1990)
EListener Submitted Month continues with another banger from 1990, Claudio Fragasso’s BEYOND DARKNESS! Released the same year as his more infamous, so-bad-it’s-good TROLL 2, both films starred Michael Stephenson as the tormented son of a father lacking any ability to tell that his family is in mortal danger. This one may suffer a bit from its actual cinematic competency compared to TROLL 2, but it’s still a wild ride of blasphemy, witches and exorcism. Welcome to our casa (5)! Ep 524Hardware (1990)
ELet’s go back to the bad old days when HMN was the Reddit Horror Club; at the time, we rotated through the members of the group, doing 2 movies a week chosen by different people. One of them was HARDWARE (1990), so it’s only fitting that over a decade later it’s suggested by a listener and here we are doing a proper discussion of it on the show! If you can ignore how much Richard Stanley put of himself into the pervy landlord (who gets absolutely ROCKED by the killer robot later on), this is an almost flawless slice of grimy cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic horror. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 523Sleepover Nightmare (2005)
EListener Submitted Month kicks off with a deep cut from our neighbor to the north. Sleepover Nightmare is in strong contention of being the cheapest movie we've ever covered (and that includes last week's Birdemic). This Canadian slasher film has the feeling of a shot on video 90's slasher but with a little less charm. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 522Birdemic: Shock & Terror (2010)
EWe’ve been hard at work only discussing movies with anniversaries this year, and to show his displeasure, Matt chose to punish us all with the unwatchable BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (2010). Arguably one of the worst movies ever made. it really lives up to the hype and is without a doubt the dumbest thing we’ve ever discussed on the show. Ep 521Species (1995)
ELike many boys in the mid-90s, naked women were very scary for your gentle HMN hosts. The concept of their strange anatomy, ability to smell your fear (and possibly boners) as well as their heightened intelligence made them seem like they were from another planet… So of course we studied SPECIES (1995) for clues on how to defend ourselves. We’re grown up now but still mystified by the kinder sex (even though we live with them these days; we are simple creatures) and need a refresher on what to do about hot alien monsters. Ep 520Flatliners (1990)
EWe all make mistakes from time to time… Some of us accidentally bully a child to death (it’s ok if you’re also a kid. Maybe.) while others choose a movie set on Halloween to discuss in the middle of August. When we put it that way, it’s not quite so bad that we’re doing the supernaturally-charged medical thriller FLATLINERS (1990) this week on the show. Plus, it’s got an all-star cast of incredibly attractive people. Also Oliver Platt. Heat up the defibrillator and pop some melty candy corn in our mouths, it’s Horror Movie Night!
