S6 Ep 198198: Black and Gay, Back In The Day with Marc Thompson | Part 2
Today we are chatting to certified national treasure of the queer community, Marc Thompson. Marc has set up @blackandgaybackintheday, a digital archive and podcast which celebrates black queer life and its history. Today we are delving deep into the archive, discussing what it was like growing up as a black queer man in Brixton in the 1980’s, why the Pet Shop Boys are the ultimate trailblazers of house music and why it’s important we find out who exactly was sniffing poppers at the back of Heaven nightclub in 1986. You can listen to Marc’s playlist “It’s A Sin – The Black Album” here. - ‘These are the songs that Black queer people loved, listened to and danced to in the days of the HIV epidemic and they all left their mark on the Black queer scene at the time.’You can listen to the Black and Gay, Back in the Day podcast here and visit the instagram page here.Adam Serwer essay "The Cruelty is the Point" (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/the-cruelty-is-the-point/572104/). S6 Ep 196196: Edward Enninful | Part 2
Vogue Magazine’s @edward_enninful is the man changing fashion from the top. He’s the first black editor, and the first gay male editor of @britishvogue, and his story is incredible. From a kid growing up on a military base in Ghana who didn’t even know what gay was, fleeing to London as a refugee, to becoming the most important voice in fashion, he has consistently made it his business to be the driving force behind seeing trans, queer, and diverse faces in fashion. He has now put pen to paper with his memoir ‘A Visible Man’ that details the life of a trailblazer, plus a fair old sprinkling of parties with the likes of Grace Jones, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, wonderful tales of being a queer kid in the 90’s, and we even find out what the ONE piece of advice Anna Wintour gave him that he always cherished. You can get a copy of Edward's memoir here. This week I am joined by none other than Glyn Fussell and boy did we hit it off. Glyn is the founder of two absolute bedrocks of queer culture: the club night Sink The Pink and the festival Mighty Hoopla and I don’t know where we’d all be without him. I hear about what happens when you unite so many queer icons under one roof for the biggest LGBTQ+ music festival in Europe, which noughties icon was breaking in to fellow popstars dressing rooms, and why George Michael had to stop going on night’s out with Bananarama. S6 Ep 190Culture Club Special: Travis Alabanza, None Of The Above
Now then, Homo Sapiens is not a dating show. BUT that doesn’t stop you lot, because it turns out that when award winning writer and playwright Travis Alabanza came on the podcast last time and mentioned they were single, lots of you slid right on into their DM’s, offering to take them up town on a date!! Which means I finally feel like Cilla Black hosting Blind Date and I love it. SO after a good catch up about dating indie boys with guitars, Travis told us all about their brilliant new book ‘None of the Above: Reflections on Life Beyond the Binary’ and it’s a fascinating chat. Not satisfied with creating Netflix smash hit ‘Special’, starring in (and writing) the new ‘Queer As Folk’, he’s gone and written a brilliant novel. This episode is full of Ryan’s trademark honesty and wit, as we cover why I’m clearly lying about something all gay men do, what your slutty years can do for you, and we find out what did Ryan learn he is too famous to do in public? Hercules and Love Affair’s incredible music was such a huge part of my twenties and thirties it was brilliant to get the chance to talk to the man behind it all for today’s epsiode - Andy Butler. We met up in person and talked the hind legs off the disco donkey, with me finding out why his first job at age 15 was dj-ing in a leather bar, what it’s like to work with Anohni, and some beautiful honesty about how he learned to truly connect in relationships. S6 Ep 186186: A Diary of London Trans+ Pride
EThis week I’m coming to you again from my garden because I am grabbing what British Summer I can while it lasts. Who knows there may even be a crow update? Very exciting episode this week as a freelance journalist whose work I adore, Vic Parsons, has done us an incredible Audio Diary of their day at London’s Trans+ Pride march last Saturday. The march was a huge success, with plenty of laughs, lots of activism, and an overwhelming sense of unity dominating as 20,000 people peacefully marched from Wellington Arch in London and finished in Soho. It was a joy to see so many people from all across the trans and non-binary spectrum (and allies) creating a historic day that provided the trans community with a voice and visibility. In the words of Vic: “Now there are hundreds, if not thousands of people here. So many are wearing pink, white and blue trans pride flags and the inclusive LGBTQ+ flag. People are sitting on the grass, meeting friends, hugging, smiling and talking”. It’s a remarkable document of a beautiful day, so a huge thank you to Vic for letting us experience Trans+ Pride with you, it’s a properly special episode - Chris xRoe v Wade ResourcesNational Network of Abortion FundsThe BPAS (British Pregancy Advice Service)Oslo ResourcesSkeiv Verden VestPKI Norge📍H O M O S A P I E N S P O D C A S T📍Listen to Homo Sapiens ad-free by subscribing to Homo Sapiens+ on Apple📍Homo Sapiens Spotify Playlist📍NEW EPISODE Every Thursday📍Come play with us on socials Facebook & Instagram @Homosapiens📍Email us: [email protected]📍Podcast Host: Acast Hosted on Acast. S6 Ep 185185: Fighting 'Don't Say Gay' | Part 2
EThe “Don’t say Gay” bill came into effect in Florida last Friday, meaning that teachers and schools who discuss LGBTQ+ people, history or events can now be at risk of prosecution by parents. It’s a law that rolls back the rights of queer people in the same way Thatcher’s Section 28 bill did in the UK over 30 years ago in 1988. Yes, 1988! Ever since we got wind of it, we wanted to cover the story on Homo Sapiens, and we found just the right people to talk to in Zander Moricz and Brandon Trice. Zander is the youngest public plaintiff in the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ lawsuit. He is his school’s first openly gay Class President who went viral when, despite being censored by his school, he chose an ingenious way to speak about his sexuality in his Graduation speech. Brandon Trice is an equally brilliant young lawyer working on the case. Together they are ‘seeking to stop the law in its tracks completely’ and after listening to this episode I think you’ll be fully behind them, just like I am - Chris xRoe v Wade ResourcesNational Network of Abortion FundsThe BPAS (British Pregancy Advice Service)Oslo ResourcesSkeiv Verden VestPKI Norge📍H O M O S A P I E N S P O D C A S T📍Listen to Homo Sapiens ad-free by subscribing to Homo Sapiens+ on Apple📍Homo Sapiens Spotify Playlist📍NEW EPISODE Every Thursday📍Come play with us on socials Facebook & Instagram @Homosapiens📍Email us: [email protected]📍Podcast Host: Acast Hosted on Acast. Bonus Episode: Gays Against Guns
bonusEToday I am joined by Ti Cersley from Gays Against Guns, in a bonus episode that seems more prevalent than ever following the terrorist shooting of LGBTQ+ people in Oslo last weekend. Gays Against Guns are an American organisation which basically does what it says on the tin - it’s gays and allies in the US trying to break the chain of death caused by outdated constitutional gun laws. Since 2016 they’ve been putting pressure on corrupt politicians, making companies cut ties with the NRA, and even protesting at gun shows. Ti told me how the gun industry in the US is all about marketing, control and addiction and how living in the UK allowed him to see what a country where guns are illegal can look like. This is more relevant than ever, because it’s not just happening in America. S6 Ep 184184: Two Twos | Part 2
EIt’s been a devastating week with the reversal of Roe v Wade and the shooting in Oslo. Homo Sapiens’s thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the tragic events in Oslo, and to our friends in America - we are behind you and we will help you fight this miscarriage of justice. We have some incredible guests on the show this week, which was recorded before this past week’s events. They are none other than podcasting sensations Rose Frimpong and Nana Duncan. Their podcast, ‘Two Two’s’, has taken the podcasting world by storm because of their funny, honest and open conversations around queerness, friendship, race, pronoun fatigue and a whole load of other tangents that will always make you chuckle. We discuss the temptation to snoop through your partners phone, who out of the two knows how to throw a BIG surprise… and what the hell all of this has to do with IDRIS ELBA no less. S6 Ep 183183: Jodie Harsh | Part 2
EWhat more is there to say about this week’s guest Jodie Harsh that she hasn’t already said for herself? She is a true icon of queer culture, she was DJing in extra drag before Ru Paul’s drag race and she isn’t shy of expressing herself in oh so many joyous ways. Jodie also holds a special place in my heart because I met my husband at her night, Room Service! She tells me why her main motivation is making great music and shows, why she doesn’t like selfies and ‘riding Jodie Harsh until the fucking wheels fall off’. If a night out was an interview, it’d be this so put your headphones on, turn it up and enjoy - Chris x 📍 Homo Sapiens Spotify Playlist📍H O M O S A P I E N S P O D C A S T📍NEW EPISODE Every Thursday📍Come play with us on socials Facebook & Instagram @Homosapiens📍Email us: [email protected]📍Podcast Host: Acast Hosted on Acast. I’m honoured to have the witty and wise Reverend Richard Coles as our guest this week on Homo Sapiens. He’s as honest and funny as you’d expect, he will have you all howling with laughter with his stories that span from why he thinks he and my husband would get on like a house on fire, some of the most common questions people ask him in their hour of need, to a beautiful and open depiction of queer grief when he lost his wonderful husband David just before we all went in to Lockdown. S6 Ep 180180: How Should We Celebrate Pride in Schools? | Part 2
This week’s episode is a very special one that we’ve been wanting to do for ages, so I’m so excited it’s finally here as we discuss Pride in schools. Part one is my chat with Geography teacher and founder of his schools LGBTQ+ space, Mr Mattley, and we are also joined by ex-pupil Leah Atkinson who wrote to us about how incredible and life changing the group had been. They told me all about understanding each other and how they’ve helped and educated one another through their journeys which is genuinely beautiful and moving. In part two we hand over the Homo Sapiens baton to Hill Crest Primary School who have created their own podcast about Pride and what it means to the pupils and teachers at their school. S6 Ep 179179: Springtime Special: Arthur Parkinson | Part 2
EAs it’s the #ChelseaFlowerShow this week, we have a very special guest who’s more qualified than anyone to talk about gardening, it’s the wonderful Arthur Parkinson. He’s the author of The Flower Yard, he’s brilliant on Instagram (even though he wishes we weren’t so dependent on it) AND he’s even doing some modelling, which to us, is no surprise. Arthur gave me some great flower recommendations for Valentine’s day, how chickens help combat his depression and why he identifies with Anne Robinson and Joanne Lumley. S6 Ep 178178: Fat Tony | Part 2
ELet’s knotch the volume up on this episode, but please, no requests because this legendary DJ and pop culture marvel, Fat Tony aka Tony Marnoch, isn’t afraid to tell you where to go… just ask Madonna. He’s hilarious and larger than life, but talked to me candidly about his upcoming book ‘I Don't Take Requests: The wild, heart-breaking and life-affirming memoir of a cultural phenomenon’. Tony spoke about facing and overcoming addiction, being the bitch between George Michael and Boy George and meeting Freddie Mercury outside Heaven at the age of 15… really, this episode is *that* juicy. S6 Ep 177177: Raven Smith | Part 2
Raven Smith is the Vogue columnist, author and internet funny man who keeps us all chuckling away on Instagram. He’s here to tell us about his new book ‘Raven Smith’s Men’. It is hysterically funny, honest and at times bittersweet in its portrayal of the queer experience. We talk about how Black Lives Matter changed his whole perspective on work and life, what he said that got armies of Harry Styles fans coming for him in his DM’s, and how he finally got free of internalised homophobia. Hit play for a great chat - Chris x Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
