Looming over Greece's second largest city, Thessaloniki, is the Heptapyrgion Fortress. Built in Byzantine times, refortified by Ottomans in 1430, it became a brutal prison by the 1890s. Torture and executions scarred its walls over the centuries with countless people losing their lives here.
