Education is a Journey - Missy Andrews
What starts as a conversation on homeschooling multiple children turns into a rich discussion on the nature of learning, teaching, and avoiding the pitfalls of home education. Missy Andrews Joins Yvette Hampton to share wisdom from her many years as a homeschool mom, curriculum publisher, and literature expert. This is an excerpt from Missy's interview on the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast. How can the concept of mastery education intensify the already substantial burden that homeschooling parents carry? How might clarifying our definition of education free us from the tyranny of booklists? If education isn't a list of facts and books, then what is it? If education is less about how many books you read and more about how you read them, then my booklist just got a lot shorter! Isn't this too good to be true? How might an unexamined view of success and identity complicate the homeschooling process? How does the gospel liberate us to homeschool our kids joyfully and graciously? Homeschool Reset - Durenda Wilson
Guilt! We all deal with it. Mom, wife, teacher, daughter, sister, friend. We feel guilty because we simply can’t meet all the needs of everyone and everything around us. We’re not giving our kids the education they deserve. We’re not keeping up with the house. We can’t live up to the demands of motherhood. Our husbands need us. Our family needs us. It’s never ending and we are left feeling like a failure. Well, it’s time to let go of that guilt. Durenda Wilson, joins Yvette Hampton to encourage us with truth, scripture, and stories of how the Lord has worked through her obedience to home educate and disciple the hearts of her children. This episode is an excerpt from Durenda's session for the Homegrown Generation Family Expo. Listen to the full conversation here. She has been married to Darryl for 33 years and they have 9 grandkids. She is convinced that home education is an incredible blessing, but only if we don’t let it hold us hostage to unnecessary expectations and notions of what it “should” look like. The heart of her message encourages parents to create a simple, unhurried lifestyle while growing a strong, cohesive family. It’s in this nurturing environment where learning most naturally happens and where lifelong learners are grown. Durenda has written The Unhurried Homeschooler (a simple, mercifully short book on homeschooling) and Unhurried Grace for a Mom’s Heart. She is the host of the Durenda Wilson Podcast and is the owner, writer, and host of her blog and podcast, at DurendaWilson.com. She also enjoys speaking at events where she can encourage homeschool parents to lay aside unnecessary expectations and truly enjoy this homeschooling journey!
