Thirty years before, a mysterious woman rescued Shaheen Pasha’s family from homelessness when they arrived in New York from Pakistan. The Pashas never forgot that act of kindness from the woman they’d known only as “the landlady.” But now, as anti-immigrant sentiment overtakes the country, Shaheen needs to better understand the landlady’s gesture, and to be reassured of the good in the world. She finds it in a surprising place.
