Ep 15Play With Yo’ Mama, Not In Court
EWe are absolutely positively over 1) that wack sauce, anticlimactic Super Bowl (half-time show and all), 2) this Tri-State area snow, and 3) people who try to get over in the courtroom. This week we’re talking about the cute moment that could’ve gone left when a Florida burglary suspect tried to sweet talk his way out of charges. Luckily, Judge Tabitha Blackmon handled it with grace, but that isn’t always the case. Don’t try to finesse in the courtroom and end up in contempt, y’all! Also on the docket this week we discuss: how the hell two Atlanta cops have their jobs back after assaulting two Black college students last year; why Kenosha accused murderer Kyle Rittenhouse may be getting arrested...again; the history of celebrity lawyer Lisa Bloom and that history's relevancy to her involvement in the T.I. and Tiny case; the very direct and sobering plea of ex-NFL player Chad Wheeler’s girlfriend to keep Wheeler behind bars for her safety; the latest in former President Trump’s second impeachment trial (the only President ever to be impeached twice); and all the ways the walls are closing in on R. Kelly - namely his longtime associate pleading guilty to bribery of a witness. Whew. It’s a lot but get into it. Ep 14The NFL Ain’t Sh*t: Protect Women & Black Lives!!
EIt’s Super Bowl week and we’re betting on Black, as in always bet on the Black quarterback...shout-out to Patrick Mahomes, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Donovan McNabb, Steve McNair and Doug Williams! But sadly the NFL continues to fumble on its handling of player misconduct and violent criminal assault of women. We get into the nitty gritty of the case of former Seattle Seahawks player Chad Wheeler who is charged with brutally beating his girlfriend and the NFL’s deficient response in this matter and in the past. Also on the Docket this week: Updates on how the George Floyd case will be prosecuted; reality television couple T.I. and Tiny have found themselves in hot water with myriad sexual coercion allegations amongst other things; and Robinhood, the stock trading app is being accused of robbing the poor to feed the rich following their decision to limit trades last week…What. A. Mess. If you or a loved one are a victim of sexual assault or in an abusive relationship and need help, go to SafeHorizon.org or call their 24-hour hotline 1-800-621-HOPE (4673). Ep 13White People: It’s Time to Go to MF Work
EEboni and Dustin are joined by Ben Cohen, founder of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to discuss The Campaign to End Qualified Immunity. Qualified immunity is a f’d up legal construct that prevents too many bad cops from being charged with shooting unarmed Black people! We get into the nitty gritty about dismantling White supremacy with Ben who says, to paraphrase, this ain't a chocolate problem, it's a vanilla problem! Also on the Docket this week: Salt-N-Pepa and Spinderella lawsuit pushed (real good) to mediation, Soulja Boy accused of sexual assault, Meagan Thee Stallion says charges against Tory Lanez have not been dropped, and grand jurors file petition for impeachment of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron (you know, the guy who didn’t bring charges against the cops who killed Breonna Taylor!) Ep 12BEVELATIONS & Elevations
EEboni and Dustin are joined by Bevy Smith, business executive, host of SiriusXM’s Bevelations and a former co-host of Bravo’s Fashion Queens and the entertainment news show PageSix TV. We get into the nitty gritty with Bevy about balancing the choices you make in pursuit of your dreams, good and bad contracts (careful what you sign!) and many other revelations from her new book Bevelations: Lessons from a Mutha, Auntie, Bestie. Click here to find a Black bookseller near you. On the Docket this week, Kanye’s Yeezy fashion brand sues a summer intern for posts on Instagram. And speaking of social media, we discuss the audacity of the Trump fueled mob boasting of their crimes in posts and online video related to the Capitol insurrection January 6th. So far charges are minor and more serious are likely to come. But will there also be accountability from within the Congressional ranks and Capitol Police for complicity or accessory to these crimes? ProPublica reported that Black Capitol Police warned about racist officers in their midst for years prior to the Jan. 6th insurrection. And The Washington Post reports that court documents reveal self-styled (and White) militia members planned on storming the U.S. Capitol days in advance of the Jan. 6th attack. At last, there are criminal charges in Dustin’s hometown of Flint, Michigan related to the criminal mishandling of the drinking water supply that plagued the citizens of Flint, a majority Black community, and ultimately caused the death of twelve people. Ep 11We Back, We Still Black in America
ECourt is back in session trying to make sense of all that went down in the first two weeks of 2021, which smells a bit like 2020 with the added stink of a hot mess insurrection incited by Trump for his people to storm the US Capitol. Our jam packed Docket also includes: Tracy Chapman awarded $450K in copyright suit against Nicki Minaj, Zoë Kravitz filing for divorce after only a year-and-a-half of marriage to Karl Glusman, suspects arrested in burglary of Dr. Dre's home, charges filed against the infamous "Soho Karen" caught on camera accusing iPhone theft by son of jazz trumpeter Keyon Harrold, possible pardons by Trump for Lil Wayne and Kodak Black, updates in the trial of Minneapolis police charged in the killing of George Floyd, and no charges in Wisconsin of the police who shot and paralyzed Jacob Blake. Sidebar: Trump Folks Lose Power and Lose Their Minds!
bonusENew episodes of Holding Court return January 13th, but we need to sidebar for a minute about what happened this week.... It is the day after Black Americans helped the Democrats take back control of the Senate by winning both Senate seats in Georgia including the election of Rev. Raphael Warnock as the first Black Senator elected from that former slaveholder state. It is the day after the United States Congress, despite a violent insurrection by a mob of Trump loyalists, confirmed the electoral victory of Joe Biden as the next President of the United States, and the historic election of the first Black Woman as Vice President, Kamala Harris. So I wanted to connect with you today dear listeners and rejoice that today is a new day even while the work today and everyday from now on continues to make law & order mean justice for everyone not just the privileged. New Year Mailbag and Flashback to 2020 via 1992
bonusENew episodes return January 13th, but in the meantime we've got a new mailbag question from a "Daddy" who wants to know if he needs a lawyer for his son. We also revisit a mailbag question about "Separated" vs. married from episode #9. Then we revisit the main segment of episode #5, an important discussion from last year when we flashed back to the first viral video of a brutal police encounter with a Black man when Rodney King was beaten in 1991, and the police who beat him were tried and acquitted in 1992 triggering an uprising. The 2020 viral video of the brutal killing of George Floyd also ignited an uprising, and the reckoning must confront familiar narratives from leaders and media that contribute to the devaluation of Black Lives. Ep 10"Separated" is NOT a Relationship Status and 2020 Helluva Year Review
EWe recap some of the biggest legal and cultural moments of the year and what got us through, prompting the question: can you sue the year 2020 for “alienation of affection” given how it separated us from loved ones often with devastating consequences? On the Docket this week, Eboni and Dustin discuss the lawsuit against Kobe Bryant’s widow Vanessa Bryant, and developments in a lawsuit by the estate of Michael Jackson against HBO regarding the Leaving Neverland documentary. And Eboni shares a personal cautionary tale about what it means to be single and/or married. Are Black people safe to take the COVID-19 vaccine? Ep 9Happy Holidays and F*ck Domestic Violence!
ETis the season to wonder why Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to Federal criminal firearm possession, what’s up with Pepa of Salt-N-Pepa’s butt lawsuit, and why a little league football coach thought it wasn’t straight up child abuse to violently slap a 9-year-old player during a game that, thankfully, was caught on camera? Speaking of cameras, we only wish there were more body cameras to reveal the truth behind why 23-year-old Casey Woodson, Jr. who wasn’t the subject of any investigation, was fatally shot in his own home by police? And Tahliah Debrett Barnett aka FKA twigs gives a gift to all women by speaking out about domestic abuse, in a lawsuit she filed against ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf. EActor Faizon Love sues the film studios for literally erasing him and his co-star Kali Hawk from the movie poster of “Couples Retreat” in the international marketing campaign. We hear firsthand from Faizon about his bold and needed step to correct a long history of Black actors being deemed not marketable in international distribution. And we get into the nitty gritty of this issue with Dr. Jason Johnson, Professor of Journalism and Communication at Morgan State University who breaks down the false narratives at the root of Hollywood erasure in examples of John Boyega from Star Wars posters and others. Ep 6Black Patriots Matter
EHow did Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen who shot three protesters with an assault rifle and killed two of them, post $2 million bail? Ep 5Hell No, We All Can’t Just Get Along: From Rodney King to George Floyd
EFlashback to the first viral video of a brutal police encounter with a Black man when Rodney King was beaten in 1991, and the police officers who beat him were tried and acquitted in 1992, then LA and the world cried no more! And yet it happened again and again. Then in 2020, police brutally knelt on the neck of George Floyd until he took his last breath, and Minneapolis and the world cried no more...again. The outcry galvanized today by Black Lives Matter faces familiar narratives from leaders and media that contribute to the devaluation of a human life. On The Docket this week, we peel back layers in what it means for Black women as victims of assault and Meg Thee Stallion’s plea for Sisters to speak out. Also, a California judge ruled in favor of Russell Simmons in a $10 million sexual assault case. Plus NBA player Sterling Brown agreed to a $750 thousand settlement with the city of Milwaukee for excessive force by police from a 2018 encounter. Check out GQ Magazine The Year of Thee Stallion. Legal headlines on The Docket this week include a fishing expedition by Nicole Young’s attorneys into possible paternity claims against Dr. Dre in their divorce case, plus Steve Harvey’s stepdaughter Lori Harvey pleads “no contest” to resisting arrest. Eboni and Dustin discuss the moment including the coveted Black male swing vote, and WTF was up with Lil Wayne, Ice Cube, 50 Cent and Kodak Black co-sign of Trump? Legal headlines on The Docket this week include Mel B and Eddie Murphy child support case, the latest on Dr. Dre and Nicole Young’s divorce case, and the shocking lawsuit by a Louisville police officer who killed Breonna Taylor. Special guest US Rep. Cedric Richmond of Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District joins the conversation to clarify 2018 Jobs and Justice Bill legislation introduced from the Congressional Black Caucus versus recent proposals from the Trump Administration’s Platinum Plan and Ice Cube’s Contract with Black America. Congressman Richmond also drops knowledge about lesser known positive programs of the infamous 1994 Crime Bill, including authorization for “pattern or practice” investigations for police misconduct and grants for preventing violence against women. And Eboni shares a personal story about how the judicial system needs more “pretrial diversion programs” for giving young people a second chance rather than a criminal record. Follow Eboni K. Introducing: Holding Court
trailerEI’m Eboni K. Williams, an attorney, TV news anchor, and former public defense attorney. I was raised by a single mother. We were poor, we struggled but we strived and she taught me, inspired me and instilled in me a sense of justice through perseverance, through knowledge! I worked and was accepted to college at 16, then I went to law school. Now I want to teach, to inspire. I believe we are a nation of laws, but the system is rigged and we must work to restore the promise of justice for all. This show isn’t about the law as much as it’s about how the law impacts our lives, and what we need to know to protect and empower ourselves. And one more thing, I’ve got the most amazing, smart, sexy co-host Dustin Ross. Y’all know him from The Friend Zone. On this show we’re going to get real, get informed, get going and of course have a little fun along the way. Come join us and let’s hold court! “It makes no sense, it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” - Johnny Cochran clip courtesy CNN. “You go down there looking for justice, that’s what you find, ‘just us.’” - Richard Pryor clip courtesy Rhino Entertainment / Warner Music.
