Ep 205The Collector's Edition With Ben Clymer – Featuring Kevin Hart
Hodinkee Radio returns for the second installment of The Collector's Edition With Ben Clymer. Follow along with Hodinkee's founder as he speaks with notable friends and watch enthusiasts about what it means to be a collector. As you may recall, we launched the series last year with pop star Ed Sheeran. In this episode, we are thrilled to sit down with comedian, actor, producer, and serial entrepreneur Kevin Hart. If it seems like Hart is everywhere all the time, that's because he is – from the current "Reality Check" stand-up tour and the big screen in hits like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Secret Life of Pets to television ads for the likes of DraftKings and JPMorgan Chase. On top of that, he also runs a media company called HartBeat Productions. And on top of that – and what brings us here today – he's also a legit watch enthusiast. We caught up with Kevin at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut, right before he was about to hit the stage for back-to-back "Reality Check" shows. We learned that his love of watches dates to the early days of his career and that over the years Submariners, Daytonas, Pateks, and Richard Milles adorned his wrist. Today, his collecting has evolved to the point where he has a partnership with Audemars Piguet. As a "friend of the brand," Kevin has access to some very special pieces, including the ceramic chronograph he famously leaked to the world and the piece he'll be wearing in the upcoming Netflix movie Lift.Show Notes: 0:27Kevin Hart0:30Ben Clymer0:56A stop on the "Reality Check" tour2:00Audemars Piguet4:57Rolex Submariner 166105:14Rolex Daytona 1165085:40Jacob the Jeweler6:25Richard Mille RM 0299:07Kevin's first Tourbillon: The Royal Oak Concept Tourbillon Chronograph in Rose Gold 26223OR10:51Revealing the Royal Oak Selfwinding Chronograph "50th Anniversary" in Black Ceramic13:28Watch worn in the movie Lift14:05Chadwick Boseman and the AP x Marvel Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon17:58Royal Oak Openworked Extra-Thin "40th Anniversary" In Platinum18:46Kevin's car collection20:24Celebrity friends into collecting watches20:48Corey Gamble watch collection

Ep 199The Many Ways Of The Seamaster
For this episode of Hodinkee Radio, I asked Danny to come on the show to talk about a couple of his latest projects, including his recent A Week On The Wrist with an updated but still old-school Omega and his excellent Talking Watches with Aly and AJ. We get into the many forms that the Seamaster has taken over the years, a breakdown of the new 300, some of our favorite references, and a behind-the-scenes chat about making a great episode of Talking Watches. Thanks so much for listening. Please note that this is the final episode before the show takes a short break for the remainder of the summer. We'll be back in early September with a brand new collection of fun and interesting conversations from the world of watches. Chat to you then. Ep 198Surveying The Field With The New Tudor Ranger
This week, I've rounded up Jack and Mark Kauzlarich for an in-depth chat about the new Tudor Ranger. Mark covered the launch of this latest sports model from Tudor for HODINKEE, Jack remains an owner of the preceding 79910 Ranger, and I also got a chance to see and photograph the new model on the day it was released, so all we had to do was plug in some microphones. From Mark's experience at a significant in-person watch launch to our combined thoughts on the spec, pricing, and market placement for the new Ranger, it's a nerdy look at a conventional yet somehow divisive new field watch from Tudor. Thanks so much for listening, I'll see you all in the comments.0:30 Hodinkee Insurance 2:00 The New Tudor Ranger 5:00 The 7808 Oyster Prince that survived the British North Greenland Expedition 9:00 Mark Kauzlarich 12:20 Julien Faure strap manufacture 19:01 The 2014 Tudor Ranger 22:20 The Tudor North Flag 41:20 Tudor Metas certification
Ep 197Does A Longer Power Reserve Really Matter?
Lately, it seems that the offered length of power reserves has become a hot-button topic in watch-related discourse – but what do you need all those hours for? Are ~38 hours really not enough, especially in a casual or everyday sports watch? I never give total power reserve that much of a concern when it comes to divers and the like, but it's clear that the spec is of growing interest among watch enthusiasts.I asked Jack and Danny to plug in their mics and help me talk over this novel need for more and more hours. And from early 8-day Cartiers to Hublots that boast 50 days of power reserve (and require a drill to winding) we dig into the need for a longer power reserve, some of the bigger PRs in watchmaking history, and some of our favorite power reserve indications.-- Show Notes:00:30 Hodinkee Insurance 5:55 Powermatic 80 9:00 Vertex M60C Aqualion 10:43 Cartier 8-day Tank 12:56 Oris Caliber 400 14:18 Ulysse Nardin Freak14:25 IWC Big Pilot14:31 Jacob Quenttin 31 days 14:36 Lange 31 15:28 Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari 15:44 Hublot MO-05 LaFerrari (it was 2013, I'm not getting younger) 17:55 New Breitling SuperOceans 21:50 Tudor North Flag 24:00 Maltese Cross Stop-Work (aka. Ep 196Consistency Vs. Variety In Watch Design (Rolex, Omega, and MB&F)
Some watch brands never seem to change, while others are constantly trying to re-invent what they do. That's the topic for this episode of HODINKEE Radio and I asked Jack, Danny, and Cole to weigh in with their perspectives on the concept of consistency vs. variety in watch design. As you can imagine, it's another loose and chatty episode that dips into the "Rolex method", brands that aren't afraid to break the mold, how many bands Greenday has actually been, and a whole bunch more. Thanks so much for listening, we'll catch you in the comments at Hodinkee.com. Ep 195Chopard And The Mille Miglia With Karl-Friedrich Scheufele And Jacky Ickx
EChopard's Co-President Karl-Friedrich Scheufele and race car driver Jacky Ickx on more than 30 years of a legendary automotive event.--This episode of HODINKEE Radio was recorded in Italy shortly before the start of the 40th running of the Mille Miglia, a modern recreation of an incredible 1000-mile race from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia. Said to be the most beautiful race in the world, it ran from 1927 to 1957 and was then restored in 1977 as a regularity rally that plays host exclusively to cars from the original period. As you can imagine, it's become a banner event in the vintage car scene and for this episode, I was joined by Karl-Freidrich Scheufele and Jacky Ickx to chat about the event, the cars, and how Chopard has played a long-standing role in supporting the race. Karl-Friedrich is Chopard's Co-President (along with being a vintage car collector) and Jacky Ickx is a famous race car driver who has won Le Mans six times, drove in Formula One for Ferrari in the early '70s, won at Dakar, etc. The pair are long-time friends, and they first ran the Mille Miglia in 1989. We chat about how they met, what Mille Miglia means to the vintage car scene, why Chopard has been sponsoring the event for more than 30 years, and how the race has changed as it's been passed to the next generation. 2:20 Mille Miglia 9:27 Sterling Moss 1955 Mille Miglia 18:10 Mille Miglia History 19:42 Cannes Film Festival 28:07 Chopard Mille Miglia 2022 Race Edition
Ep 194'Build' With Tony Fadell (The iPhone, Better Watches, and His New Book)
I'll cut right to the chase. This week's episode features a deep and very fun chat with none other than Tony Fadell. Widely known for being the man behind several game-changing products (like the iPod, the iPhone, and the Nest thermostat), Tony recently debuted his book "Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making". If you're making something or are part of a team that makes something, the book is a patient and thoughtful collection of lessors and considerations that Tony learned from his mentors and his own life experience. It's funny, insightful and full of interesting stories from Tony's time in Silicon Valley. With Jack as a co-host, we get into a handful of my questions about Build, how some of the lessons can apply to watches, and even the watch-focused way in which Tony celebrated the release of the book. I hope you enjoy the episode, and please consider picking up a copy of the book. All proceeds are being matched 5x by Tony before being added to the Build Climate Fund which seeks to invest in companies that are focusing on solutions for the ongoing global climate crisis. ---Show Notes: 00:05 Hodinkee Insurance 00:30 Tony Fadell 2:10 Build: An Unorthodox Guide to Making Things Worth Making 11:15 Nest 13:52 MB&F 13:53 Ressence 21:13 Tony On The Tim Ferris Show 23:48 Patek Nautilus Perpetual Calendar 5740 28:00 The Pocket Crystal 44:36 Impossible Foods 44:53 Diamond Foundry 47:45 Gravity Sketch 48:10 "How The World Really Works: How Science Can Set Us Straight On Our Past, Present, and Future" by Vaclav Smil 51:28 "The Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail" by Ray Dalio
