若談到「最接近完全比賽」的「非完全比賽投球」，那得追溯到 100 多年前得 1917 年。那年，紅襪隊投手 Ernie Shore 投了一場個人記錄上，幾乎看不出破綻，卻不被大聯盟官方認定是完全比賽的投球內容。
他完成了 9 局投球，沒有被打安打、沒有保送、沒有觸身球、隊友沒有失誤，當然，也沒有不死三振，整場比賽對手華盛頓參議員的打者 27 上 27 下，但 Shore 仍然沒有獲得大聯盟官方「完全比賽」的認證。這是為什麼呢？
