Pearl Harbor and Memory with Alex Sessa

December 2023 marked 82 years since Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, which spurred American entry into the Second World War. The events of that day are quickly fading from our collective memory. Today, there are just 25 survivors of Pearl Harbor, the youngest of whom is a 99-year-old. Fewer than 2 per cent of Americans have any personal recollection of the events of that day. In this new episode, Jackson and Alex discuss how the attack on Pearl Harbor shaped a generation – colloquially referred to as ‘the Greatest Generation’ – and how this pivotal event shaped their worldview. Notably, this generation responded to the threat of National Socialism and fascism to fight to preserve democracy. As we are losing those who remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, how will the events of that day continue to shape America in the future? What lessons can be drawn from Pearl Harbor as we face increasing threats to our democracy today? To read Alex's post head to: pearl-harbor-and-the-fight-for-freedom-the-loss-of-a-generationTo interact with Alex head to: His LinkedIn: alexsessa If you want to get in touch with History with Jackson email: [email protected] support History with Jackson to carry on creating content subscribe to History with Jackson+ on Apple Podcasts or become a supporter on Buy Me A Coffee: https://bmc.link/HistorywJacksonTo catch up on everything to do with History with Jackson head to www.HistorywithJackson.co.ukFollow us on Facebook at @HistorywithJacksonFollow us on Instagram at @HistorywithJacksonFollow us on X/Twitter at @HistorywJacksonFollow us on TikTok at @HistorywithJackson  Hosted on Acast. The Gloucester History Festival is where history unfolds in one of the most historically fascinating cities in the UK! This year’s festival theme is Quests and Curiosity and over two weeks, from September 2nd to September 17th, 2023, offers an impressive array of over 150 events, starting off with Gloucester Day celebrations and including tours, talks, Heritage Open days, exhibitions and the intriguing Blackfriars Talks. This year the Blackfriars Talks feature more than 100 of Britain’s best-known historians, broadcasters, and authors. These thought-provoking discussions take place over the course of nine days within the medieval venue of Blackfriars Priory, built in 1249, the oldest history festival venue in Britain which contains the UK’s oldest surviving library, the medieval Scriptorium, built in the 13th century.Where better to delve into the rich tapestry of the history of monarchy and their palaces than beneath the ancient priory beams, donated to the priory by Henry III, in the city where he was crowned? But Gloucester is a city with a deep political and cultural heritage. From its role as an important Roman Colonia to playing a pivotal role as a parliamentary stronghold during the Civil War, it has seen power wax and wane. Its victory against the Royalist Siege in 1643 is commemorated annually on Gloucester Day on 5 September marking the beginning of the Festival each year.Gloucester's iconic cathedral has graced the silver screen in productions such as Harry Potter and Wolf Hall and the spire can be glimpsed from the festival venue as we hear from a number of stars of stage, screen and airwaves over the course of the festival. The Festival returns next year for the Spring Weekend, taking place from Friday, April 12th, to Sunday, April 14th, 2024, and again in Autumn 2024, from Saturday, September 7th to Sunday, September 22nd promising even more historical insights and adventures. If you missed it this year, be sure to plan to come along in 2024.To find out more about Gloucester History Festival head to: https://www.gloucesterhistoryfestival.co.uk/Or head to @GlosHistFest on Twitter or Instagram for more detailsIf you want to get in touch with History with Jackson email: [email protected] support History with Jackson to carry on creating content subscribe to History with Jackson+ on Apple Podcasts or become a supporter on Buy Me A Coffee: https://bmc.link/HistorywJacksonTo catch up on everything to do with History with Jackson head to www.HistorywithJackson.co.ukFollow us on Facebook at @HistorywithJacksonFollow us on Instagram at @HistorywithJacksonFollow us on X/Twitter at @HistorywJacksonFollow us on TikTok at @HistorywithJackson Hosted on Acast. In this week's episode of The History with Jackson Podcast Jackson talks with Dr Christopher Harrison about his brand-new book 'Genocidal Conscription: Drafting Victims and Perpetrators under the Guise of War'.
