Queens of the World Series: Irene of Athens ruled as regent for her son, Easter Roman Emperor, Constantine VI. But when he rose up against her and threatened her religious conviction, she had his eyes gouged out. Thus she became the first Roman Empress to rule in her own right. But because the Pope did not believe a woman could hold the title, he awarded it to Charlemagne, thus creating two rival Roman empires, one in the east and the other in the West. Episode originally aired in 2019, I have added a 2024 update. Of the 66 monarchs who have ruled over England since the Norman conquest only 8 have been Queens. These women have had to fight to gain and hold power. Through most of English history men outranked women in the line of succession so the only way for a woman to inherit the throne was if she had no living brothers. The wives of Kings, while called Queens are not monarchs in their own right and are referred to as Queen Consorts. Some of these female monarchs who were fortunate enough to occupy the throne were less than brilliant rulers. But some reigned with wisdom and justice proving a woman could do the job just as well as a man. Here are their stories... Anyone who has spent time around a newborn baby knows that while adorable, they are mostly preoccupied with milk, sleep and soiling themselves and don’t exactly have the skills to govern a nation. Though some my argue that a baby might make a better head of state than a politician. Throughout history, the combination of hereditary monarchy and brutally short life expectancy meant that many rulers did inherited their thrones when they were mere infants. Some were even unfortunate enough to loose their fathers while still in the womb and be born directly onto the throne. In one case a crown was even placed on the belly of the pregnant queen and in another a 3 month old king wailed through his tedious coronation ceremony. Charlotte of Belgium was the beautiful and bright only daughter of the first King of Belgium. Her life looked to be joyous too, when she fell in love with a Hapsburg Archduke, Maximilian of Austria. The couple’s numerous royal connections even got them a incredible job opportunity, to become the rulers of the newly established Empire of Mexico. They crossed the Atlantic full of tropical, turquoise dreams of being hailed as heroes. But they quickly discovered that they were philosophically opposed to the small percentage of Mexicans who actually wanted them there. As the Empire crumbled, Carlota made a desperate return to Europe to beg for help. Only to be met with cold rejection, which ensured Maximilian’s demise and drove Carlota to the depths of mental illness. If you google “Princess Charlotte of Wales” you will be greeted by pictures of William and Catherine’s adorable daughter, born in 2015. But there was another Princess Charlotte of Wales, born over 200 years earlier who had a much different life. She endured the neglect of parents who hated each other and the abuse of a father who saw her as competition. She grew up resilient and brash. After dragging several young men along, she escaped into a happy love match with a dashing German Prince. They were every bit as popular as the currant Prince and Princess of Wales. As the inevitable heir to the throne, Charlotte embodied Britain’s hope for the future and the birth of her first child was feverishly anticipated. But horribly managed medical care caused her to died in childbirth at the age of 21. Her tragic death was mourned by the nation just as deeply as Princess Diana’s. The race to sire a new heir produced the future Queen Victoria. So every British royal since, including the young Princess Charlotte would not have existed were it not for the sorry fate of the original Princess Charlotte of Wales. Let’s meet her. Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals. In Ancient Greece and the Roman empire homosexual relationships were an accepted and common practice. In this hyper-masculine society the male form was revered for its physical perfection while women’s virtue was jealously guarded to ensure the legitimacy of children. In Greece romantic and sometimes sexual relationships between older and younger men was seen as an initiation rite. The Romans modeled themselves after Greece in most things but had strong feelings that a roman citizen should always play the dominant, never submissive role in a homosexual relationship. Prominent citizens sought out enslaved men, prostitutes, and entertainers to fulfill their sexual desires. Enslaved boys would sometimes be castrated in an attempt to keep them docile and immature for the pleasure of their dominant male lover. Though uncommon, marriages between men were not unheard of in ancient Rome. They included many of the traditional elements of a wedding including a dowry and the man acting as the bride would wear a veil. By the 18th century the trans Atlantic slave trade brought more people of African decent to Europe then ever before. In 1768 there were about 15,000 black people living in London. Many were brought their as enslaved servants and sailors. But some had the right mixture of talent and luck to rise to the upper echelons of society, becoming celebrities and even aristocrats. Today we’ll met 7 prominent people of African and mixed heritage who lived in Britain or France in the 18th Century. Among them a King’s secret daughter, an icon of both Sport and music, two authors who spoke out against slavery, and a lady of wealth and refinement who would have fit perfectly into the world of Bridgerton. In many countries where polygamy is practiced, Kings and emperors have had harems of hundred or even thousands of wives and concubines. It’s good to be the King. But in Europe, Christianity has reigned for a millennia and the church is pretty sticked on their one woman at a time policy. But that didn’t stop a handful of monarchs from taking multiple trips down the aisle. Royal brides were under a lot of pressure to produce as many heirs as possible, and they died often in childbirth or because their bodies were warn out from constant pregnancy. If a monarch wasn’t getting the heirs he wanted from his wife, or if he had grown tired of her and she hadn’t done him the courtesy of dying, there was always divorce or even murder to clear the throne for another consort to take her place. On January 14th, 2024 Queen Margrethe of Denmark, the second longest reigning monarch in Danish history and the last remaining female monarch in the world abdicated. She handed the throne to her son who is now King Frederik X. Let’s take a look at the history of this small but happy Scandinavian country. In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. In the late 1800s, American industrialists were raking in cash and living like princes, but they had no way, other than their mansions, servants and yachts, of making it clear that they were better than everyone else. Meanwhile, across the pond, the British aristocracy had come on hard times. They still had their titles, historic estates and aire of superiority, but they were running low on funds. This became a match made somewhere south of heaven when hundreds of American heiresses married cash-strapped British noblemen. Millions of dowry dollars crossed the pond to renovate ancient English mansions and bolster the ailing peerage, while American fathers got to brag that they had a baroness or a duchess in the family. There was even a magazine, “The Titled American” in which British nobles with a title to sell could advertise their eligibility to rich American ladies.
