In 1608, Samuel Champlain took some colonists up the great River St. Lawrence to establish a new settlement and fur trading post. He founded France's first permanent Canadian colony, which he named Quebec—an indigenous word meaning: where the river narrows. New France’s government under the French Crown consisted of a Sovereign Council consisting of three major officials: a Governor General, an Intendant and a Bishop, and a number of minor officials, including five councilors, an attorney-general and a clerk. The Sovereign Council was to be the sole governing authority in the colony and the intermediary between the king in France and his overseas subjects in New France. In the spring of 1605, France’s St. Croix settlement was moved to a new site across the Bay of Fundy, on the shore of the Annapolis Basin, an inlet in western Nova Scotia. Here at Port Royal, France's most successful colony to date was established. The general area came to be known as Acadia. Among the lieutenants on this undertaking was a geographer named Samuel de Champlain, who promptly carried out a major exploration of the northeastern coastline of what is now the United States. At its peak around 1712, New France was a vast territory in North America that stretched from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay down to the Gulf of America. This immense territory was divided into five main colonies: Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Louisiana—encompassing the vast interior of today’s United States, including the Mississippi River valley. Appointed governor by the Society of Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, Francois-Marie Perrot clashed with Governor General of New France Frontenac in 1675. When Sulpician Abbot François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon (1641–1679) intervened on behalf of Perrot, Frontenac referred the matter the Court of King Louis XIV in France. Fénelon, a French Sulpician priest who was an eloquent preaching missionary in New France was eventually forbidden to remain in Canada due to his political interference and ultimately withdrew from the Sulpicians. The mission he founded a mission in the Kenté (Quinte) region of Lake Ontario left no trace, but his name is remembered at Fenelon Falls. He died at the age of 38, with his final whereabouts unknown. Francois-Marie Perrot (1644-1691) was appointed governor of Montreal by a royal commission in 1670 until 1684. He married Intendant Jean Talon’s niece and through his influence obtained the appointment as governor from the Saint-Sulpice seigneurs of Montreal island, succeeding Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. In 1672, he was granted the island that now bears his name (Île Perrot to the west of Montreal Island) as a seignory. Later, Perrot was the governor of Acadia from 1684-87. Throughout his life, Samuel de Champlain was a loyal Catholic soldier. As a young man, he learned to fight with the firearms of his time, acquiring this practical knowledge when serving with the army during the later stages of France's religious wars involving the Holy Catholic League in Brittany from 1594 to 98. During this time he attained the rank of Captain. His soldiering skills, along with his talents as a Navigator and Geographer, would later serve him well during his many adventures in North America. In his early thirties, experienced seaman Samuel Champlain joined the crew aboard the ‘Saint-Julien’ on his first Trans-Atlantic crossing. This journey lasted two years and gave Champlain the opportunity to learn about Spanish holdings from the Caribbean to Mexico City. Along the way, he took detailed notes, wrote an illustrated report on what he learned on this trip, and gave this secret account—entitled ‘Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico 1599 to 1601’—to his King, Henry the fourth, who rewarded Champlain with an annual pension. The USS Huron was an iron-hulled gunboat of the United States Navy; a screw steamer with full-rig auxiliary sail, built in Pennsylvania and commissioned in 1875. The Huron ran aground off Nags Head, North Carolina in heavy weather, and was wrecked. At first, her crew worked in relatively little danger, attempting to free their ship, but she soon heeled over, carrying 98 officers and men to their deaths. I was honored to lend my voice to help revive and celebrate the epic tale of an American naval hero involved in this tragedy, as part of The BackTracker History Show. Sable Island is an isolated small Atlantic sandbar situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia that is notable for its role in early Canadian history when France initiated the first attempts to settle on the island. The Viceroy of New France, Marquis de La Roche, sent soldiers and settlers (mainly criminals) to Sable Island to establish a fishery and fur trading post. When the convicts mutinied, they were left on the tree-less and stone-less Sable Island. Most of the settlers died, but a few managed to survive in mud dwellings for 5 years before being returned to France. Poorly planned, the settlement failed and was abandoned in 1603. Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda (1490-1573) was a Spanish humanist, philosopher, and theologian of the Spanish Renaissance. He is mainly known for his participation in a famous debate with Bartolomé de las Casas in Valladolid, Spain, in 1550–1551. The debate centered on the legitimacy of the conquest and colonization of America by the Spanish Empire and on the treatment of the Native Americans. The main philosophical referents of Sepulveda were Aristotle, Saint Thomas Aquinas, Roman law and Christian theology. These influences allowed him to argue for the cultural superiority and domination of the Spanish over the Native Americans during the period of the conquest.
