Elizabethan ‘Sea Dog’ Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) was Walter Raleigh’s cousin and an English privateers who was authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The Legacy of the King James Version of the Bible is broad and encompassing, reaching the shores of North America from the British Isles from the early 17th century onwards. JWV, One of our regular Canadian viewers of the video edition of this series is familiar with the book, for, when growing up in England she remembers studying the King James Bible as a Methodist. She brought her beloved copy of the Authorized Version to North America when she immigrated at age 11 and still reads from it daily. Her favorite passage is Psalm 23 and the Lord’s Prayer which she often recites to herself. The original printing of the Authorized Version of the King James Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, in 1611 as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. KING JAMES BIBLE📖The task of translating the Bible into English was undertaken by a group of scholars approved by King James the First. All were members of the Church of England and most were clergy. The scholars worked on the King James Version (KJV) of the Bible in six committees, two based in each of the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and Westminster. Revered as a translator of the Bible into English (1526), William Tyndale (1494-1536) was a biblical scholar and linguist who became a leading figure in the Protestant Reformation in the years leading up to his execution for heresy. Englishman Sir Francis Drake (1540-96) was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 1570s. He was an explorer, sea captain, privateer, slave trader, Elizabethan naval officer, and politician. He is best known for his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577-80. Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain.
