STORY of AMERICA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Coureur des Bois or wood runner Étienne Brûlé (1592-1632), was the first European to cross Pennsylvania and later, the first to see Lake Superior. Samuel de Champlain (1567-1635) administered the affairs of New France and took personal charge of organized explorations of the unknown interior of the continent in 1609-15.
