Her memoir offers a rare glimpse into a young girl's experience living with and loving her bipolar mother. Michelle then spent years working to eradicate the mental health stigma within her own workplace at a fortune 500 company by elevating compassion, causing more open conversations and leading real change in how mental illness is understood in the corporate setting. She also knows firsthand what it feels like to struggle with a mental illness after experiencing her own depression due to challenging life events of her own. As a past volunteer with court appointed special advocates, the Make a Wish Foundation and serving as big sister with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization, elevating the wellbeing of our youth matters to her. Michelle's volunteer work led her to create her own children's program called Perfect Just The Way You Are. This program was designed to help youth better understand how to nourish the body and the mind and has reached over 2000 children and their families in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania in the last five years. The program recently evolved into a school-wide and student led mental health wellness fair. Michelle's intentions are to touch as many children's lives as possible with this program so that children proactively develop a healthy relationship to brain health. In today's episode, we're talking about how to reduce the stigma around mental health, how to create more compassion in today's society, how to improve the collective mindset around mental health in your workplace, the economic benefits of investing in mental health resources, and Michelle's advice to those affected by mental illness. The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Ep 36How To Organize A Community Trash Cleanup w/ Richard Arterbury of Ocean Blue Project

Every Wednesday on the Hippie Haven podcast, learn how to live harmoniously with yourself, others & the planet. We talk about all things hippie, including eating vegan, reducing your trash, starting an ethical business, eco-activism, gardening, beekeeping, tiny house living, and so much more. Today's guest is Richard Arterbury, the executive director of Ocean Blue Project, a nonprofit organization based in my home state of Oregon. Their mission is to protect and conserve the ocean and its associated waterways through hands on volunteer efforts to clean beaches and rivers, enhance wildlife habitats, and reduce pollution and through service learning projects to provide education and increase awareness of the critical importance of clean waterways. Today we'll be discussing how he started his nonprofit organization, what he's learned along the way and how you can organize a trash cleanup in your community. The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Formerly a translator for the US Navy, Callee was honorably discharged as a conscientious objector in 2017 following an episode of severe depression & alcoholism fueled by not living in alignment with her core values. Ep 35How Electromagnetic Pollution Affects The Body w/ Dr. Samuel Milham

Today, we are chatting with Dr. Samuel Milham, a specialist in occupational epidemiology who's known as the scientist who first alerted the world to the frightening potential link between occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields and human disease. Born in 1932, Dr. Milam is a graduate of union college and Albany Medical College. He became a senior resident and epidemiology at the New York State Department of Health in 1961 and then was a development consultant for that department. His experience includes associate professor, department of Pediatrics, Albany Medical College, associate professor, University of Hawaii, school of Public Health and medical school section head epidemiology section, Washington State Department of Health, chronic disease, epidemiologist, Washington State Department of Health, and more. He has received many awards, including the Robert Carl Strom Foundation Humanitarian Award in 1990 and has written dozens of peer reviewed articles on various medical issues. His mortality rate studies led to the writing of his book, Dirty Electricity, to alert people to the possibility of a looming epidemic of mortality due to high frequency radiation and what steps to take to reduce our exposure to dirty electricity. Now, this is a controversial topic with limited research behind it. There are many people who do believe that electromagnetic fields are negatively affecting our bodies, and that there needs to be more research done into the longterm consequences on humans, animals, and the environment. And there are many others who think that the existing research proves that there's no adverse health risks from electromagnetic fields. My goal is to always introduce topics to you and then encourage you to do your own research and to, at the end of the day, do what's best for you, your family, and the planet as best you can. Ep 34How To Get Plastic Bags Banned In Your Town w/ Corinne Hellyer

Bonus: Recent Good News in the Sustainability Field - 4/20/19

bonus

Hey, it's Callee, and you're listening to a special episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast. If you haven't already, be sure to hit that subscribe button so that you automatically get each new episode right when it comes out. While it's important that we always continue to strive for substantial change in the world around us, constant research, lifestyle changes, and/or activism can be overwhelming and exhausting, so I wanted to do another edition of good news in the sustainability field to remind us all of the progress that's already been made. IN VEGAN NEWS: Del Taco will be releasing vegan tacos made with Beyond Meat on April 25th at all 580 US locations. Taco Bell now has a dedicated vegetarian menu, with many options that can be veganized, including the Crunchwrap Supreme. Subway just released a vegan sub at participating UK locations. Burger King is testing vegan whoopers at 59 locations in and around St Louis Missouri in the US. Following Canada's recently updated dietary recommendations, the French government just changed theirs as well, telling French citizens that they should eat less meat, sugar + salt, and more fruits, veggies, whole grains + nuts. Virgin Atlantic Airlines is removing beef + palm oil from their in-flight menus. A new study shows that almost half of coffee drinkers in the UK ask for vegan milk when ordering coffee at a cafe. This is on par with reports that about half of Americans now regularly purchase non-dairy milk at grocery stores. In fact, experts predict that the dairy industry could completely disappear in the next 10 years. They've already lost over $1 billion dollars in revenue last year compared to the year prior, whereas the vegan milk market is booming, with sales excepted to exceed $34 billion by 2024. IN ANIMAL WELFARE NEWS: Madrid, Spain just banned wild animal circuses, citing that the needs of animals cannot be met in a circus environment where they are confined in cages for long periods of time. Madrid is the 64th municipality in Spain to ban wild animal circuses, and Spain is one of 26 countries around the world that have enacted this type of ban. Sharks near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia can no longer be shot dead. Shark attacks are incredibly rare, but when they did occur, authorities would try to kill any sharks seen in the area, though this inhumane practice was not found to actually reduce the likelihood of a shark attack. Following public outcry, the US department of agriculture has announced that it will stop testing on kittens. For 37 years, they'd secretly been feeding 2 month old kittens raw meat infected with toxoplasma parasites to study foodborne illnesses. The infected kittens were studied for 2-3 weeks, then unnecessarily killed, even though this illness is easily curable and the kittens could have, and should have instead been put up for adoption. Over 3,000 baby kittens were subject to these taxpayer-dollar-funded horrors, but luckily it's finally come to an end, and the USDA will be releasing it's last 14 kittens to be adopted by USDA employees. Germany's last fur farm just closed down, following a national ban in 2017, thanks to heavy campaigning by PETA. The state of New York is considering a bill to ban pet stores from selling dogs bred at a puppy mill. All pet shops would be required to obtain their animals from rescue shelters or humane societies only. If you live in New York, please call your local state rep and encourage them to support this legislation! The California Horse Racing Board banned the use of riding crops so that horse jockeys can no longer whip their horses during a race. This comes after 22 horses have died in the last 5 months at the Santa Anita horse race track alone, though it's not clear how many of those deaths were directly related to whipping. There's currently a bill in the Canadian Parliament that would fine any new park or aquarium in Canada up to $200,000 for holding captive any dolphins, whales or porpoises.unfortunately This would not affect the two existing Canadian aquariums that have about 61 orcas, dolphins + whales held captive . IN PLASTIC POLLUTION NEWS: After a massive number of customer complaints, Trader Joes announced that they'll be eliminating over a million pounds of plastic from their stores, in part by no longer offering single use plastic bags at checkout, switching to biodegradable produce bags, replacing styrofoam produce packaging with bio-based compostable trays, and selling more loose produce overall. UK-based supermarket chain Tesco is now testing sales of more plastic-free produce, though they're not making it permanent until they know how it impacts their food waste numbers. By 2025, Tesco plans to cut packaging weight in half, made all of its packaging entirely recyclable, and ensure the paper it uses is 100 percent sustainable. New York is now the second state in the US, after California, to ban retail stores from offering single-use plastic bags at checkout. Plastic bags that ar

A Big Thank You + Quick Update On Why There's No Episode This Week

bonus

Hey, it's Callee, just checking in to let you know that there's no Hippie Haven Podcast episode this week, because thanks to all your support + votes, my zero waste store Bestowed Essentials, made it to the top 100 finalists of the 2019 Fedex Small Business grant, so we had to quickly put together a video for the next round of judging, and that, plus getting my new full-time employee Chesca all settled in here at the shop and ready to take over production + shipping of our online orders for me, I've had my hands full lately and decided to skip an episode for this week, but I will be back next week on our regular schedule with April Dickinson, you might know her on Instagram as @zerowastedork, and she'll be sharing her expertise as a former legislative assistant on how to effectively communicate with lawmakers + how to enact policy change at your local level. This is a topic I've gotten a lot of requests for, so I'm reallyyyyy excited to finally be diving deep into this subject because, as we all know, individual action is important, but it's not the end-all-be-all, and it takes action from corporations + governments to bring about substantial change, but we're not going to see action unless we demand it. This is just one of many episodes I'll be doing this year on community activism, as well as of course, still talking about individual lifestyle changes, because "zero waste" is about so much more than just making little to no trash. Thank you so much, as always, for all of your support, not just with this podcast, but with my business + my other projects, I love connecting with you on Instagram, if you're not already following me, I'm @ahippieinavan, and feel free to suggest other topics and/or guests that you'd like to hear on the podcast! Remember, that together, we will make a difference to save the planet. The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Ep 26How to Compost with Worms with Wormologist Anna de la Vega

Hey, it's Callee, and you're listening to the Hippie Haven Podcast! Every wednesday, I interview experts + everyday people on how they live an ethical + eco-friendly lifestyle, and how you can too. Previously, we've covered topics like how to go zero waste, environmental activism, vegan parenting, preventing food waste, secondhand shopping, urban beekeeping, starting an eco business, and so much more. My goal is to inspire you to take action, both in your day-to-day routine, and on a larger scale of combined advocacy because I believe that together, we can make a difference in saving the planet. If you haven't already, be sure to hit that subscribe button so that you automatically get each new episode right when it comes out! Today's episode is all about composting with worms, featuring Anna de la Vega, a composting expert who founded The Urban Worm, and provides vermicompost workshops + consulting to individuals, businesses + schools in the UK. You can follow her on Instagram @wormologist, or visit her website at www.theurbanworm.co.uk. Shownotes for this episode, including a full transcript, are available at www.ahippieinavan.com/026. This episode is sponsored by Uncle Jim's Worm Farm, the #1 supplier of composting worms + supplies in the US. I've got a compost bin in my shop that's thriving with worm from Uncle Jim's, and I'll be ordering from them again in a few months when I start a second worm bin in my campervan once I'm back on the road. Uncle Jim's ships worms to the continental United States, plus Alaska, Puerto Rico + the Virgin Islands year-round, with guaranteed live delivery. To order worms or other compost supplies, visit ahippieinavan.com/worms, and as always, thank you so much for supporting our podcast partners! If you're not quite ready for a full-blown compost pile or bin at home, but you definitely don't want your food scraps stuck in a landfill, creating toxic methane gas, then I've got a couple tips for you too! First, check out the ShareWaste app. It shows you neighbors with a compost pile and/or chickens who are happy to accept your foods scraps, or if you have chickens or a compost pile yourself, you can sign up to accept your neighbors food scraps. It's still a growing app, so if there's no one nearby you yet, then tip #2 is to google compost + your city name to see if you have a local pickup service, or if there's a dropoff near you - they're often at farms, food coops, community gardens, or even your municipal garbage facility. You can also call your garbage company and see if they offer food waste bins to pickup on the curb when they collect your trash. Some garbage companies will allow food waste in your yard waste bin, others will not, so be sure to verify what's available, and of course verify that they're actually turning your food and or yard waste into compost! I want to give a quick shout-out to several small compost companies that I personally follow on Instagram, this is not sponsored at all, I just love the work they're doing. There's CompostNow in parts of Georgia + the Carolinas, Scraps Mile High in Denver, Colorado, The Compost Crew in DC + Baltimore, and Compost Cab, also in DC. If you are interested in starting your own vermicompost, make sure you check out our sponsor, Uncle Jim's Worm Farm. This small company in Pennsylvania has been getting their hands dirty with vermicompost for over forty years, and today they're the #1 supplier of composting worms + composting supplies in the US. Of course, I'd never recommend a company that I don't personally love, and I can tell you that my vermicompost bin is thriving with the worms I got from Uncle Jim's.They ship to the lower 48 states, plus Alaska, Puerto Rico + the Virgin Islands, and they guarantee live delivery year round. You can order worms for your new vermicompost bin by visiting www.ahippieinavan.com/worms The Hippie Haven Podcast is hosted by Callee - a zero waste activist & business owner. Bonus: Support + Share These Eco Crowdfunding Campaigns!

bonus

Hey, it's Callee, and you're listening to a special episode of the Hippie Haven Podcast! If this is your first time listening, I release a new regular episode every Wednesday, where I interview sustainability leaders + experts on how we can live our best ethical + eco-friendly life. If you want to learn more about zero waste basics, I recommend listening to episode 16 with Polly Barks of Green Indy Blog, where she shares her 12 steps to a waste free life in 12 months, and episode 21 with Alyssa of the Live Planted Podcast about secondhand shopping. We've also covered numerous other topics, like starting an eco business, urban beekeeping, composting, vegan parenting + more, so definitely check out those old episodes too if you haven't already! For today's bonus episode, I've got 13 crowdfunding campaigns from different countries that are ending soon and could really benefit from your support, whether it's financial if you have a few dollars or more to spare, or sharing them on your social networks to help boost their visibility. While there might not be an eco business or charity crowdfunding near you yet, I recommend picking the closest one to you, or to a friend or family member of yours. The links to each crowdfunding campaign will be in the shownotes for this episode, so you can just open up your podcast app where you're listening to this right now and click on the one that interests you for more info. First, there's Scoop Marketplace in Seattle, Washington of the United States. They're almost halfway to their goal of $10,000 by Feb 28th to open a new zero waste grocery store. Their website is https://www.scoopmarketplace.com/ https://ifundwomen.com/projects/scoop-marketplace You might have seen me talking about ecobricks on my Instagram a few weeks ago, if you don't know what they are, it's when you completely stuff a hard plastic bottle with soft plastic film + wrappers to create what's essentially a brick made entirely of plastic. These have become popular building materials in parts of Africa + Asia, where there's often an abundance of discarded plastic, without proper recycling facilities. Ecobricks are catching on in the UK, but are hardly known of here in the States. I will be doing an episode all about ecobricks in a few months, so stay tuned for that! Now, Upcycle Santa Fe, in New Mexico, USA, is raising money to complete testing of open-source building materials made from post-consumer plastic waste, aka ecobricks. This testing is composed of two parts: 1) researching and documenting the exact R-values (insulation ratings) of Ecobricks, and 2) the rate and speed at which these materials will burn in a structural fire (flame-spread). The tests will be carried out by Intertek in Pennsylvania, providing the groundwork for meeting building codes in NM and eventually elsewhere, and will ultimately allow Upcycle Santa Fe to build the first full-scale, legally-compliant plastic insulated structures in the United States. They've already had a study completed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which documented that plastic waste used as insulation material does not have any significant off-gassing of chemicals in comparison with modern insulation available in stores. Upcycle Santa Fe still needs over $4,000 to get this ecobrick testing done, and you can learn more at https://upcyclesantafe.org/ https://www.gofundme.com/ecobrick Refill Revolution is already pretty well-known in the zero waste community, it's a female-owned refill store in Denver, Colorado, and they're looking to raise $50,000 in the next 26 days to expand their product line into unpackaged groceries. Their website is https://www.therefillrevolution.com/ https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/help-refill-revolution-expand-into-bulk-food#/ The Pantry Concept will be the first zero waste grocery store in Kansas City, and they need $35,000 in the next 56 days to open. I don't see a website for them yet, but you can find them on Facebook as The Pantry Concept. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/zero-waste-bulk-store#/ In Portland, Oregon, the non-profit CityWildPDX is seeking $30,000 to purchase + renovate an old Airstream camper using recycled + eco-friendly materials into a mobile classroom to bring environmental education opportunities to Portland area kids and families. They're only a third of the way to their goal that expires on Feb 28th. Their website is http://www.citywildpdx.org/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/902844472/wild-bus-kids-environmental-education-classroom-on?ref=discovery&term=wild%20bus In the state of Georgia, there's a non-profit called Gangstas to Growers, which is an agriculture business training program that offers paid internships to formerly incarcerated Black youth on the West Side of Atlanta. They need about $3,000 more dollars to reach their goal of $15k to support their program, to secure a van for transportation, fees for educators and class materials, zero-waste kits and trainee uniforms. https://w
