We often think of joy as a feeling reserved for the high and easy moments — but biblical joy is often a renewal in darker times. When Nehemiah said "joy of the Lord is your strength", the people were exhausted, overwhelmed, and convicted of their own sin. Yet God extended an offering of joy to them. Joy is not just for the best moments in life. Joy is a gift that fortifies us when we feel empty.

For Reflection:
Before we can experience joy, we often need to be reminded of the reasons we have for that joy. Nehemiah reminded the people of the reason for their joy and the importance of celebrating that joy with one another.
- What reasons do you have for joy?
- How might joy look different from simple happiness?
- Is there an area of life where you need God's strength and renewal right now?
