David seems unwilling or unable to take action in one of the most consequential moments in his reign. In fact, Absalom busies himself doing the job that David was supposed to be doing. He also uses his father's inaction to set up a coup that would further divide the fragile nation. Grace, mercy, and justice are never passive, whether in David's life or ours!

For Reflection:
Sometimes sin is less about what we have done and more about what we have failed to do.
- What are some things that David might have done or should have done in this situation and the lead up to this "after this..." moment?
- In your own life, does trouble usually arise from what you have done or what you have failed to do?
- Is there anything that God might want you to take initiative with today?
