In this holiday replay from September 5, 2024, we consider the Apostle Paul's encouragement to practice self-control. The Corinthians were well-acquainted with Olympic-style games; their city held similar games every two years. Paul uses these athletics as a metaphor for the Christian life, especially the need to say "no" to our appetites in order to achieve goals with a far greater value!

For Reflection:

Paul compares the Christian to an olympic-style athlete who enters a period of discipline to achieve a lasting goal.

- What are some ways that this athletic metaphor might be helpful to you? Are there limitations for you?

- Through training, athletes can often accomplish what seems impossible, and they often do so with a grace that makes it seem almost easy. Are there challenges that today seem easy to once seemed difficult or impossible for you? How might God be inviting you to train in an area that seems difficult for you today?
