We’ve heard the word “empowerment" used and abused time and time again. Often, we hear it when we’re being sold something: almost everything from beauty products to exercise classes are meant to “empower women.” But what does “empowerment” even really look like? And feel like? Today I talk about my personal journey with the word, cite Jia Tolentino’s incredible essay “Always Be Optimizing” and Naomi Wolfe’s Beauty Myth to examine how capitalism has diluted true female liberation.
