Ep. 50 Replay | Celebrating the Life of John Gallagher
In this very special replay of The Herbalist Hour Episode 50, I sit down with John Gallagher — co-founder of LearningHerbs and a beloved member of the herbal community who recently passed away after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and insomnia. This episode means the world to me. If you've followed HerbRally for a while, you've probably heard me talk about how much John influenced my herbal journey. His podcast, HerbMentor Radio, was my introduction to the wider herbal world. I devoured every episode — over and over again. Through those interviews, I felt like I knew the herbalists he featured. And John was the thread running through it all — full of curiosity, warmth, humor, and a contagious laugh. Eventually I became an HerbMentor member (still am to this day), and a few years later, John actually became a friend. I'll never forget him visiting the Mountain Rose Herbs marketing department when I worked there — he brought so much joyful energy with him. And at RootStalk, the legendary one-time herbal gathering, I feel like our friendship really took root. It was also there that I learned John wasn't quite as squeaky clean off-mic as he was on his show — turns out he loved to swear, just like me! That only made me love him more. Over the years, I got to know him better through shared time at events, visits to his home in Port Townsend, chats on the phone, and eventually, this very conversation on The Herbalist Hour. Recording this episode felt like a full-circle moment. I finally got to sit down and interview someone who helped shape my path in herbalism — not just as a mentor from afar, but as a real friend. Everyone I know who knew John adored him. He lit up every room. And he gave so much to this community. My heart goes out to Kimberly, their children, his family, and everyone who loved him. John — I love you, buddy. Thank you for being there during some rough times. Thank you for your support of HerbRally. And thank you for helping open up the herbal world to me, and to so many others. You'll be deeply missed. ~Mason Prefer to watch the video version? You can find it on YouTube here | Watch on YouTube P.S. The classes and videos take an approach that all can not only understand, but learn from without complicating things. He started foraging in 2008 and since then has covered thousands of miles on foot foraging and learning plants in his state of Indiana. Josh often spends 40 or more hours a week in nature and loves to encourage others to connect with nature and themselves. He has worked with girl scout troops, boy scout troops, and conservation societies in his state. The connection with nature goes deep as he has healed himself from depression and controlled a lifelong struggle with it and suicidal thoughts by connecting with nature in unconventional ways. He loves giving thanks to nature and embraces the title of "Tree Hugger," challenging the idea that being called a "Tree Hugger" is a bad thing. His approach to teaching is down to earth and often times will include some light humor and references to popular media as a way to bring us all together. His Youtube channel and business is named after his favorite plant, Trillium, because of the trinity of leaves representing healthful Mind, Soul, and Nature. Read more about his offerings at: https://www.trilliumwildedibles.com and check out his excellent free foraging videos at: @TrilliumWildEdibles Enjoy more of Wolf's Plant Healer's Path vids housed here: Plant Healer's Path on YouTube And SUBSCRIBE to the HerbRally YouTube channel to not miss any of its frequent postings. *Your likes and comments on this video are much appreciated by us all!* 🌼WANT MORE HERBAL GOODNESS? Originally, Nathan had planned to release a different cold water experience video at the same time as this one, but that one remains unreleased and is now something he uses exclusively for his classes. Then, somewhere along the way, he misplaced this recording. And by the time he found it again last year, he was deep in organizing the Northwoods Nature Fest, an incredible event that this year will be held May 30th to June 1st in Wolverine, Michigan. This festival has drawn in some amazing herbalists, including jim mcdonald and Matthew Wood, the latter of whom has called it "the greatest little under-marketed herb festival in the North Country." Nathan teaches a wide range of classes, including: Indigenous herbalism Mushroom foraging Cold water immersion (which you'll actually see him demonstrate in this video), wild rice cultivation Permaculture Treaty rights, bark teas and plant medicine, pain relief methods, Ojibwe storytelling, guided plant walks, and even discussions on Troubled Water, the documentary he's featured in. *BONUS: Nathan is sharing with us a special coupon code for 15% off all items on his site.* Exclusive to listeners of the HerbRally podcast go to HerbalLodge.com and use code HR15. The Appalachian Herb Collective | Hurricane Helene Re-Leaf Effort
Join herbalists Jeannie Dunn, Lupo Passero and Melissa from the Appalachian Herb Collective as they discuss their work with the Appalachian Herb Collective and how you can help their re-leaf efforts. The Appalachian Herb Collective (AHC) is an Herbal Re-leaf effort created in response to the devastation inflicted throughout our area after Hurricane Helene decimated and displaced so many. This is a grass roots effort of local Herbalists on the ground, meant to directly hep the folks affected by this catastrophic event. They have dubbed themselves, the Appalachian Herb Collective (AHC) as they are covering as many counties in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee as possible offering Free Herbal Mutual Aid hubs. They currently have various locations set up in Madison, Buncombe and Yancey County in North Carolina as well as Unicoi County, Tennessee and are actively working to set up even more AHC stations to support as many areas affected as possible. A huge thank you to our presenting sponsor for The Herbalist Hour, Oshala Farm Oshala Farm is a beautiful and vibrant certified organic herb farm based in southern Oregon where they grow and sell over 80 different plant species. LEARN MORE AND BUY | OshalaFarm.com In this episode of The Herbalist Hour, I'm joined by Robin Rose Bennett. Robin Rose is a story-teller, writer, and herbalist. She has been offering classes in WiseWoman Healing Ways: Herbal Medicine and EarthSpirit Teachings since 1986 - at herb conferences, festivals, clinics, medical and nursing schools, and most joyously, outside with the plants. She recently released another incredible book called "The Young Green Witch's Guide to Plant Magic". I had so much fun reading through it, we had to have her back on the show to go in-depth on the book. We chat about what inspired her to write the book, how we can give back to the plants, the "connection ritual", why a dandelion doesn't want to be a rose and what we can learn from that, how we can cultivate a sense of kinship with plants and a ton more. This is one of my all time favorite interviews and I know you're goin' to love it!
