S1Ep10 Taking care of you
"As leaders, we are called to be a role model to others. We want to show them that self care is important so that they can do so, too, without feeling guilty about spending time and money on themselves." I went on a retreat last week and it was amazing. I used to feel guilty when I took time out for myself, but now I realize that it's actually really important. As leaders, we need to be role models for others and show them that it's okay to take care of themselves. So this week, we're talking about what gets in the way of self-care, and how we might embrace the habit instead. It's not always easy to make time for self care, but it's worth it. In this episode, you will learn: 1. How I used to feel guilty about taking time out for myself, and how that has changed (mostly). 2. The importance of self care for leaders. 3. How to make self care a habit, and some tips for doing so. S1E9 Managing Up: The Key to Getting Ahead
"Managing up is not about getting your manager to do what you want them to do." In today's episode, Rochelle talks about how to manage up and why it's important for aspiring leaders. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How to manage up in a way that will actually accelerate your next promotion. 2. How to get your needs met outside of your manager 3. How to let your manager know what you're capable of without appearing to be a bragger. Resources: Women in Leadership facebook group Chapter Summaries: [00:00:01] - Rochelle is the her leadership coach. On the podcast, Rochelle is talking about how to manage up on today's episode. Managing up can feel daunting at first, but it's simply good relationship management. [00:01:12] - After ten years in public service, she has learned a lot about managing up. Today she will talk about three techniques that will help you manage up in a way that will actually accelerate your next promotion. [00:04:55] - As an aspiring leader, you need to build relationships with your team, your colleagues and your boss. You need to find out if your boss is an introvert or an extrovert. If they are more task oriented or people oriented, adjust your communication with them accordingly. [00:08:19] - There are two reasons why people feel their bosses are difficult: Their values aren't the same as their employees', and/or they're not meeting their needs. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the founders of Apple, didn't have the same values, but together, they changed the world. It's okay to have different values from your boss. It doesn't make one of you better or worse than the other. [00:10:38] - It's time to show your boss what you can do when you're not in the room, listening for opportunities to share stories that highlight things you've accomplished in the past, letting your boss know where you want to go in your career and what will help you get there ahead of time. S1E8 How to Make Your Values Work for You
"You have far more choice in what your values are than we are led to believe" It took me a while to get to my leadership role the second time around (after kids). So I refused to quit trying even when I suffered knockbacks and difficult times trying to get to my leadership role. All because of my why. I was determined to make a difference by doing leadership in a way that was going to have a positive effect on my team rather than a negative one – and that was based on my values of fairness and making a difference. In this episode, you will learn the following: The importance of knowing your values How to be more intentional about living in alignment with your values That you have more control over what your values are than you think Resources: Woomen in Leadership facebook group Chapter Summaries: [00:00:42] - If you want to make a positive difference to your life one of the first steps is to identify your values. The second is to take stock of how well you live your life according to your values. When we live in alignment with our values, we have more energy and life satisfaction. [00:04:22] - Being a leader in itself is not always easy. Unfortunately many people give up trying and convince themselves that they never really wanted to be a leader. It helps in getting to a leadership role to know your why. And underlying your why is your values, your deepest values and your goals that align with those values. [00:06:34] - There are clues as to how well you are living in alignment with your values. If you feel icky or triggered at the moment, you might be out of alignment with the values behind those feelings and need to look for a solution to bring yourself back into alignment. [00:08:29] - Rochelle's word for 2022 is "intentional". It is important to live in alignment with your values and to make intentional choices about what your values are, and what you do and don't do based on those values. [00:14:06] - I invite you to consider what do you value most? I encourage you to get down to your top five values to help decision making and keep you focused. Then ask yourself if you are living your life aligned to those values yet. [00:14:55] - Join the Women inLeadership Facebook group to continue the conversation about values. S1E7 Trying New Things: Why We Fear Them and How to Overcome That
"Try this first. Think about what you're assuming this will say about you, and by default, what you're assuming they will think about you if it goes wrong. And then I challenge you to come up with a completely different meaning, a completely different reaction that you could assume someone was going" I turned 50 this year, and I made a commitment to myself to do 50 new things before the year is over. It's important for leaders to be willing to try new things. It shows that you're willing to take risks and that you're open to new ideas. Sometimes people won't try new things because they're afraid of what others might think if it doesn't go according to plan. But I challenge you to reframe what the possible outcome could mean. It might not be as bad as you think. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. What's so good about trying new things? 2. Why is it so difficult for people to try new things? 3. What if you're wrong about the meaning you've put on something? Resources: Women in Leadership Facebook group Chapter Summaries: [00:00:01] - Rochelle turned 50 this year. She made a commitment to do 50 new things before the year is over. Being willing to try new things is an important trait for a leader. [00:02:23] - For some people, the last new thing they tried was 20 years ago. Some new things are easy to try, like a new lipstick or a new color of beer. Other things are a bigger deal, like jumping out of a plane or swimming with sharks. There are things in the middle that people are still afraid to try. They think failing at them means something about them. What if you put a different meaning on something? What if not hearing a response of I love you from the other person simply means they come from a family that never said it before? If choosing a restaurant that turns out to be awful means you and your friend both have a good laugh about it, if not being able to work out how to use the Digital Planner straight away is a great way of role modeling to your team, [00:10:36] - Tracy's daughter has been teaching herself Spanish, and she'd asked Tracy to learn it with her. Tracy had let her fear of being terrible at it and the meaning that being terrible would disappoint her daughter, stop her from doing it altogether. Giving it a new possible meaning has allowed her to take action and start to learn the new language. Connect with me: [email protected]

S1E6 The Power of Words: Why the words you use matter
The words we use - both to others and to ourselves - have the power to shape our reality and change our world for the better. Do you know that the words you speak can shape your reality? "Your words are powerful." I was listening to the Her Leadership Coach podcast the other day and it got me thinking about the power of words. Our words are so powerful and so often we don't realise it. We can use them to positively or negatively impact ourselves and those around us. Just one word can change the meaning of a whole sentence. The next time you're talking to yourself or someone else, be mindful of the words you're using and how they might be received. Words can shape our reality and change our world for the better. In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. The power of words to shape our reality 2. The importance of using positive words when talking to ourselves 3. The significance of the words we don't use Chapter Summaries: [00:02:11] - There are a few three-letter words that can make a difference to how a sentence lands when you're talking to someone. The author has been working on reducing his use of the word 'but' for a while now. [00:05:56] - Carol Dweck coined the Term “growth mindset”, which is a belief that we have the ability to better ourselves through effort, through learning and through good teaching. A fixed mindset is the belief that you are born as you are and you can't grow anymore. One of the exercises to help children and adults change from this fixed mindset to a growth mindset is to add the word “yet“ to a number of sentences. [00:09:32] - Positive and negative words affect us on a deep psychological level and have a significant impact on how our lives turn out. Negative words release stress and anxiety inducing hormones. [00:13:19] - Today's first challenge is to come up with a new phrase to replace a negative one you use with a positive one. Decide in advance and write it down so that you don't have to think of something on the spur of the moment. Over time, it will build the neural pathways and you will find that you stop using the old phrase and start using the new one. [00:15:11] - The last point of today's talk is about the words we don't use. When we just don't address the elephant in the room. We turn our backs on it, pretend nothing's gone on and we've got nothing to say. [00:16:27] - Today's second challenge is to think about the words you're not speaking right now and what it is you're scared about saying them out loud. Next, think about how would the best leader version of you find a way to speak the words she's afraid of? [00:18:14] - If you liked today's episode, please share it with a friend. S1E5 The Six Areas You Need to Embrace for a Productive, Less-Stressed Life (Part 2)
I'm sharing the final three pieces of the Done Not Dusted framework so that you can get productivity, focus, and freedom. "I've come to see energy as one of our most precious resources."Hi, I'm Rochelle, the Her Leadership Coach, and I help quietly determined career women step up into leadership roles. In this episode, we're finishing up the work we started last week on the three pieces of the puzzle to getting things done without stress. This week, we're focusing on energy, habits, and systems. I believe that energy is one of our most precious resources, and we need to do everything we can to protect it and work with our natural rhythms. Our productivity is shaped by our habits, so it's important to be mindful of what we're doing and choose habits that will benefit us. Systems can help us be more productive by taking away the need to make decisions or reinvent the wheel every time we do something. I hope you find this information helpful and that it allows you to lead the way, her way.In this episode, you will learn the following:1. How our habits shape our productivity2. How energy levels affect our ability to focus and be productive3. How systems can give us back our freedom Resources:The Done, not Dusted course details are at https://herleadershipway.com/donenotdusted Chapter Summaries: [00:01:15] - Last week, we went through the first three pieces of the puzzle: clarity, the scientist mindset, and being a person of integrity. This week, we're looking at the remaining three: energy, habits and systems. The six areas fall under the framework:. Who do I need to be? How do I work? And what do I do?[00:02:35] - Energy is one of our most precious resources. We need to protect our energy and work with the natural rhythm of that energy. Get the sleep, eat the foods that give you energy and do the exercise. Work with our energy rather than against it. Think about when you are naturally most awake.[00:08:13] - Habits are important because they affect our productivity and stress levels. It's important to be mindful about what you're doing, and cataloging your habits is a good place to start the phone, picking up, drinking coffee and going for a run are some of the habits that can be changed.[00:11:09] - Systems are a set of practices and procedures that are applied to specific activities to achieve a specific result. Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and others have a system for their clothes, so they wear the same clothes every day. System gives you back your freedom and gives your brain more space for creativity.[00:14:40] - If you have a couple of minutes to rate and review the podcast, I'd really appreciate it.Other episodes you'll enjoy:S1Ep4 The Six Areas You Need to Embrace for a Productive, Less-Stressed Life (Part 1)Connect with me: [email protected] Women in Leadership facebook group
