Episode 041- Fear of God: Faith-Based Horror

E

Religion is a comfort to some, and a horror to others. Some very good horror movies focus on deeds done in the name of the Almighty. The characters in these movies hear voices, or have dreams, and they're compelled to act in strange and horrible ways. Are they mad? Are they? These movies haunt you because there's not an easy answer. I hope you like the episode. Thanks for listening. Join the Hellbent for Horror Horde on Patreon! Episode 040- The Horrible-Beautiful World According to Heidi Honeycutt

E

For some of us, just being a passive viewer isn't enough. Some of us are compelled to create and share the love for other artists. Writer, filmmaker, journalist, and actress Heidi Honeycutt comes to Hellbent For Horror to talk about the Etheria Film Night (http://www.etheriafilmnight.com), what it's like to act in Troma horror movies, the state of film journalism, and all things in horror fandom. Heidi is a horror fan extraordinaire, and I hope you love the interview I did with her. Thanks for listening. Join the Hellbent for Horror Horde on Patreon! Episode 039- Repeat Offenders: A Look at Horror Remakes

E

Remakes? Sequels? Are they good? Can they be good? It depends. I prefer a remake to a sequel for a bunch of reasons. But that doesn't mean all remakes are good movies. It depends on how the movie is remade. Some story updates really work for the time they are made, and others not so much. Invasion of the Body Snatchers is the classic example of a remake that fires on all cylinders, and really updates the story to the era. The Fly is also a very good one. I'm sure you have your own ideas on what remakes, if any, are worth the time and film stock. In this episode I talk about some of the horror remakes that really work for me. I'll be interested to hear if anyone agrees or disagrees with me on these, because I do tread on some sacred cows. Again, I'm always interested in starting good conversations about horror. A "Double Feature" that's so big, we needed TWO PODCASTS to tell it! James Hancock (host of The Wrong Reel podcast) returns for Part 2 of our collaboration between our two podcasts, where we discuss the "monsters" at the heart of the movies of Roman Polanski. Join us as we hunt down the monsters in three lesser-known Polanski films: 'The Fearless Vampire Hunters,' 'MacBeth,' and 'Bitter Moon! Episode 037- Gag Reflex: The Cinema Crimes of John Waters

E

We all have our guilty pleasures. I have admired John Waters as a filmmaker since I first read about him in the pages of Fangoria magazine back in 1982. I love a maverick filmmaker who can manage to make movies outside of the system on a shoestring budget that are original, unique, and fun. The early films of John Waters fit all of those descriptions. Some horror tries to gross you out, but few do better than Waters in those early films. The influence of Herschel Gordon Lewis, William Castle, Warhol,The Kuchar Brothers, and even Russ Meyer are present in Waters' movies, and I love talking about him and his films. John Waters does bad taste well. On this episode I share my guilty pleasure with you and, just maybe, some of you will agree with me. Spend some time with the Sultan of Slime! Episode 036- The Monsters that Invaded Primetime: Made-for-Television Horror

E

Notorious scares delivered on TV! Back in the early 1970's, Network TV executives started to make original movies to compete against Hollywood. They were fast, cheap and, occasionally, great! Many of these telefilms were horror movies. Some of those network TV-produced movies generated some genuine scares, and sent kids to bed to have nightmares. Not to mention that some of these movies were the starting ground for great writers, directors, and make up artists. In this episode, horror film journalist Scott Drebit from Daily Dead (https://dailydead.com) and I talk about some classic TV horror movies that you can hunt down and watch on the internet. Some still pack a good scary punch. Episode 035- Welcome to the New Tension: Women Horror Directors

E

I've said before that horror is supposed to upset the apple cart. It lets us confront fears we can't confront in any other genre. I like when good stories challenge me, and that includes a challenge to my perspective. In the last decade or so I've noticed many films directed and/or written by women that have shown me horror stories from different perspectives. They've unsettled me, and scared me in ways different from before. I LIKE this. As a reader and watcher of horror, I LIKE having something unsettle me. In this episode I talk about how these different perspectives impacted me, and highlight some movies and artists who inspire me. If you like the show, please consider supporting it on Patreon. Episode 034- Scored to Death: An Interview with J. Blake Fichera

E

What does a shark sound like as it gets closer to you? What does October 31st sound like? Or Marion Crane's last thought? When you look up a long flight of stairs in Georgetown, what do you hear? Horror Fans know. When a haunting visual and a haunting score are in perfect harmony, they have the power to enter your memory and trigger your emotions. In this episode, Author J. Blake Fichera joins us to discuss his Rondo Nominated book, "Scored to Death: Conversations with Some of Horror's Greatest Composers" and to share anecdotes from the men who gave music to the monsters. Blake and I also share our own personal connections to horror soundtracks and sound design, and how music was the Pied Piper who led us down the dark path to a lifelong love of horror films. Episode 033- Killed by Death

E

Death comes for us all. Our love of horror makes us confront death. Me? I'm not so much afraid of death as the act of dying. The fear of the pain that comes with it. In this episode, I talk about that human fear of death and dying. I talk about my own experiences with people dying, and our culture's attitudes about death. And, of course, a couple of scary movies that help reinforce my attitudes. If you like the show, please consider supporting it on Patreon. Even a dollar an episode helps to sustain the show. Episode 032- You Will be Assimilated: Science Fiction and Horror

E

Horror and Science Fiction share space on my book and movie shelves. When done right they mix together to achieve scary, imaginative results. Who can deny the power of Alien, The Terminator, or The Thing? But there are many, lesser-known films that mix sci-fi and horror. In this episode I'll talk about some movies I like that mix the two sensibilities. What about you? Did I miss your favorite? Drop me a line and let me know. Episode 030- Nowhere Man: The Outsider in Horror

E

Don't let THEM in! Or are you the one they're trying to keep out? The Us vs. Them mentality is a backdrop for some really good horror stories. Frankenstein being a great example. The Monster is the outsider, but yet you sympathize with him. In these conflicts, horror is uniquely suited to tell some great stories, and give different results. What makes THEM...them? How easily can WE become THEM? "Civilized" society is a tough path to tread. In this episode I talk about Horror and the outsider. I bring up Frankenstein and then go from short stories to little known movies to popular movies of the last decade. I think there's something for everyone in this episode. Thanks for listening. Episode 029- Here There Be Lions

E

Everyone is a fan of something, right? Some people become obsessed with things. Most of the time, these obsessions are harmless fun for people. Sometimes our obsessions involve more than just us, and sometimes these obsessions are inconvenient to people around us. And then there are the obsessions that endanger people around us. And then there are obsessions that lead to cruel power over people. Obsessions at the extreme can be horrifying. In this episode I talk about obsessions put to film. From the harmless joy of (over)celebrating Halloween, to having an obsession that leads to putting loved ones in life-endangering situations, to using obsessions to exploit and threaten people, the films in this episode span the spectrum. I'll talk about the 1981 movie Roar, which was recently released on Blu-Ray, that stars a Tippi Hedren and a young Melanie Griffith, and the new documentary Tickled, which is really about anything but tickling. Episode 027- You Better Watch Out: Christmas Horror Movies

E

If you think about it, the imagery around Christmas is really kind of freaky. A big man in a red suit can get into your house while you're sleeping. And you leave food out for him! Ancient tales about the Santa-type characters tell very scary figures who hunt for children during the long nights around the Winter Solstice. You'd think with all this material that there would be a lot of great Christmas horror movies. You'd be wrong then. But there are some movies that have dealt with all the imagery and the emotions that arise during the season and have managed to provide some good scares. In this episode, I'll talk about some of the better Christmas horror films. Among this group you should be able to find something to give you some good chills during this Yuletide season. Episode 026- More Volatile Substance: The Oscar Edition

E

It seems that when a movie with dark themes is marketed for mainstream appeal that the "horror" description goes out the window in favor of "suspense," "mystery," or "thriller." There are lots of movies that are billed as "thrillers," which are, in my opinion, horror movies, telling horror stories at their cores. This is even more the case with movies that get nominated for Best Picture. In this episode I make a case to categorize two Ocscar winners as Horror movies. I think that both Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven and the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men are horror movies, and I'll tell you why. Thanks for listening. Episode 025- The Revolution Was Videotaped

E

The 1990's was a tough time for American horror movies. But, while the Drive-Ins died and horror movies disappeared from the movie theaters, there was one safe haven left for the horror fan: The Independent Video Store. The time of the "Mom and Pop" video store, before the big studios realized the goldmine of it, was a great time to be a movie fan. The stores reflected their communities, and were a place for fans to congregate and trade movie tips and ideas. However, the 1990's weren't just a tough time for horror. It was a tough time for me as well. I was just as aimless as the plight of the horror movie at the time. Through a series of strange events I was put on track by a great video store that allowed me to delve into foreign horror movies and, more importantly, to talk to passionate fans about films. In this episode I talk about the place of the video store as the ignition point for a cultural movement. And, on a personal level, how the video store culture saved me through the 1990s, and introduced me to Guillermo del Toro, Coffin Joe, Lars von Trier, and Jan Svankmeyer. Thanks for listening. We talk about horror in movies and in culture, and our own personal connection to the art form. This show has always been about starting conversations around horror and I'm honored that I was able to spend some time talking with some folks who share my love affair with all things horror-related. Episode 023- What's Eating You?

E

In this month of Thanksgiving when, in America, we feast... I'm thinking about things that feast on us. The fear of being eaten is primal, and dates back to our caveman days when we were on the menu for all the big predators. And it's been a mainstay of horror for ages. The Blob, The Fly (both the original and the David Cronenberg remake), and countless other movies and books deal with the primal fear of being eaten by an unknown monster. So, in this episode I talk about some movies and books that give their own unique and horrible answers to the age old question... "What's eating you?" Some are classics, some are cult classics, and some are satires. All of them will creep you out. I hope you enjoy them. Episode 022- Never Underestimate the Power of the Microbe: Body Horror

E

Some horrors are all too real, and we're powerless to stop them. Being bested by a one-celled organism can really put a person in his or her place. In this episode I talk about REAL body horror, specifically the horror of outbreaks of illness. Epidemics. Pandemics. They've been the topic of good and bad horror alike. I'm fascinated by the microscopic world, and that these tiny creatures outnumber me, you, all of us. They were here before us, and they'll be here long after we're gone. It's their world. And they're much more powerful than us. In the beginning of the flu season, let's talk about outbreaks of illness, and the horror they can provide. Stephen King just hit the tip of the iceberg in The Stand. If you like the show, please consider writing a review on iTunes or Google Play. It really helps. Thanks a lot for listening. EPISODE 021- Lessons in Latex and Cuisine for Corpses: The Artists of Sinister Creature Con

E

What are you dressing up as for Halloween? I have some ideas... This month I went to the Sinister Creature Con in Sacramento, CA. This convention focuses on the technicians behind the shock effects, and it's filled with artists demonstrating their work and their passion for everyone to see. This Convention is the brainchild of Tim Meunier, who also runs the Sacramento horror film festival. I had a great weekend at the con and at the amazing after-parties that featured make up effects from some of the artists in residence. One of those make up effects was turning a woman into a mermaid to swim in a pool behind the bar at one of the parties. Simply amazing and beautiful work by Nicole Chilelli and Vicious Vanity FX. I was fortunate to be able to interview 3 of the artists at the convention. Two make up and special effects artists (Erin Koskella/Koastkilla SFX, Margaret Caragan/Pandora FX) and another artist (Kaci Hansen/The Homicidal Homemaker) who uses food as her medium to create horrific looking, but very tasty dishes. All three are passionate about their work, and were happy to talk about their inspirations and love of creating horror. Happy Halloween! Episode 016-Are You the Good Blair Witch or the Bad? My Review

E

In this special edition of Hellbent for Horror I review the new movie Blair Witch 2016, directed by Adam Wingard. This is a sequel to The Blair Witch Project, and I can't help but think of this new movie in relation to the original. So, that's what I do in this episode. I recorded some of my thoughts about both movies. What made the first movie so original? Does the new movie hold up under that weight? Does it blaze its own trail or get lost in the woods? Special bonus: hear my comparison of the original Blair Witch Project to Roberto Rossellini's Rome-Open City and the Italian neo-realism movement. Episode 015- You Can't Argue With a Confident Man: John Carpenter

E

Coppola, Scorsese, Friedkin, Altman, Penn, Bogdanavitch, Spielberg… Carpenter? You're damn right. All of these directors earned their place in Cinema History. Each of them made at least one great movie that made an impact where the film changed the direction of how movies look and feel. Each of them influenced a new generation of film directors. And yet, John Carpenter rarely gets included in lists or conversations that also include the other maverick filmmakers of the 1970's. And John Carpenter changed the course of the horror film not once, but TWICE. Once, to great acclaim. Once to great condemnation. Listen: art is art and a good movie is a good movie no matter what the source material might be. In this episode, I talk about John Carpenter's contributions to great movies and great art, and those two times that not only altered the course of horror films, but also altered his career and his legacy.

Episode 014- We're Dealing With Volatile Substance

E

You tell me: Why is Silence of the Lambs billed as a "psychological thriller," and not a horror film? It looks and acts like a horror movie. Or is it that when movies hit it big with the general culture that we can't label them horror movies? I think there are lots of examples of movies billed as "thrillers," or "suspense," or even "drama" that are actually horror movies, and in this podcast I begin calling some out. In this episode I'll talk about Silence of the Lambs, and compare aspects of Platoon and Full Metal Jacket to look for horror aspects. I'll delve into Deliverance and even Dirty Harry. Dirty Harry a horror movie? I think so. Maybe I can convince you. I'm feeling lucky. If you like the show, please consider writing a review on iTunes or Google Play. It really helps. Episode 013- Picking at the Scabs

E

Horror stories are supposed to upset the apple cart. Great stories captivate us. Some narratives are timeless. Some comment on the times in which they're born. And some stories are timeless because their meanings change with time. Stories can be great in themselves, but sometimes they resonate with something we experienced, our times, our culture, our politics. And sometimes, that isn't pretty at all. And even widely different interpretations of the story can be right. After all, art reflects whoever is experiencing it, as well as the intentions of the artist. In this episode I talk about how horror is wonderfully suited to comment (or not) on the time it's written, and sometimes the message only shows up after time has passed. Do the zombies in George Romero's 1968 movie "Night of the Living Dead" mean something different than zombies in Zack Snyder's 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead?" John Carpenter's "They Live" has different meanings to someone who watched it for the first time this year than someone who watched it in 1988. If you like or dislike Eli Roth's "Hostel," what does it say about you? Times change and good stories adapt to them. And all these thoughts were inspired by a recent binge watch of Season 1 of Mr. Robot. Enjoy! If you like the show, please consider writing a review on iTunes or Google Play. It really helps. Episode 012- You Are Here at your Own Risk: Iceland's Monsters and Men

E

Recently I traveled to Iceland, and I spoke with and interviewed several Icelanders about their native horror folklore and legends. This land is rich in stories of hidden people, elves, and trolls who interfere in the lives of humans. In addition, the land has its own real bloody stories to tell. In this episode I talk about horror folk tales from Iceland and speculate on the role nature plays in these folk tales. Episode 011- Satan Laughing Spreads His Wings: More Horror in Music

E

Continuing with the horror and music theme, I'm focusing this episode on Heavy Metal music. This hugely popular music bears the brunt of accusations of satanic imagery and messages. Few actual crimes were influenced by heavy metal, but it became associated with satanic rituals and murders due to a "satanic panic" that gripped the nation in the 1980's. Did the furor over the music by a "moral majority" actually fuel crimes associated with it? I also talk about my own relationship with Metal, and how it empowered me, led to great friendships, and endless arguments with my family. Episode 010- The Restless Interval: Horror and Music

E

Music can be scary, even terrifying. Certain combinations of notes induce nervousness and unease in the listener. Musicians have known about these intervals for centuries. They can induce tension, character, and depth into a song, and have been used in music throughout the world since before music theory was even a thing. In modern music these intervals are the roots of jazz, blues, and rock and roll. In the medieval European Christian church, however, religious leaders branded these intervals satanic – making them even more unsettling. But it's not just tones that can make music horrifying. There's a long history of folk songs telling stories of real murders in graphic detail, and these murder ballads have been popular for centuries. Music goes right to your emotions, which makes it a fabulous way to induce horror. In this episode I'll talk about the "devil's tone," murder ballads, and other tricks of recorded music that induced horror hysteria over the years – some of it imagined, and some of it very real. Episode 009- Unreal Reality: Conjuring up the Supernatural

E

Everywhere in the world has its own local ghost stories – scary places that have haunting reputations. Then there are people who actually deal with these ghosts and demons. You've heard the stories, and they've made movies "based on true events" of supposed real hauntings and possessions. Two famous paranormal investigators were Ed and Lorraine Warren who have been the subject of several movies and books, including "The Conjuring 2." In this episode I talk about home town hauntings where I grew up, and my eventual visit to the home of Ed and Lorraine Warren where I met and spoke with them, and encountered their notorious Occult Museum of possessed objects. Episode 008- My Outer Demons

E

So, what scares you? Really. What takes you out of your "horror comfort zone?" In this episode I talk about my own horror triggers. I don't rationally believe these things exist. But, somewhere deep inside me… Triggers often come from events that happen to us as children, and my trigger is no exception. I talk about some of the movies that REALLY scared me on a primal level, and then talk about my past to figure out where those triggers come from. Episode 007- The Gods of Monsters: The Men Who Mastered Makeup

E

Boo! You know those scary monsters that haunt your dreams? Make-up artists and actors make them come to life. Make-up effects have evolved with film from the beginning of cinema. Artists delve into the dark parts of themselves to make real horrors we may not have even imagined. Sometimes the work is so good that the monsters become iconic in our culture. Can you imagine a time when no one knew what the Frankenstein monster looked like? In this episode I talk about make-up artists who transformed the craft and in turn transformed cinema. Episode 006- The Shock! Heard 'Round the World: Shock Theater and Horror Hosts

A lot of us were introduced to classic horror films through midnight showings on local TV on Saturday nights. Many of us knew of our local horror host. The horror host was (and still is) a great American phenomenon full of crazy costumes, clever names, and a lot of charisma. The greats are still legendary, and horror hosts continue entertaining us on the internet and streaming video outlets. In this episode I talk about the confluence of events that led to late night horror movies on television, and some of the unique personalities that haunt our memories with our first views of classic scary Universal monsters. Episode 005: What Are Your Limits? The Dark Waters of Exploitation and Extreme Cinema

E

Warning: Explicit content. What are your limits? Surely there are some types of horror movies that you will not watch. Or are there? There has always been an audience for the disturbing and unsettling image. And there's an intimate relationship between the violence and sensationalism shown in Underground Movies and the anxieties of our culture. In this episode I discuss Exploitation Films and Extreme Horror: its history starting with Thomas Edison's first experiments with the movie camera through the Grindhouse Era to Modern Horror Cinema. This episode is a companion piece to Episode 4, "Blood Oaths and Bar Tabs: Horror Conventions and Cinema Wasteland." In this episode we interview Dave Kosanke, the creator of the long-running and legendary underground fanzine "Liquid Cheese." It is an exhaustive love letter to everything from horror to heavy metal to XXX films. Since 1993, Dave has been a one-man Army. Liquid Cheese is a true fanzine in every sense of the word. Dave puts the whole thing together himself, and he has done that for 23 years, outliving most other fanzines and one or two professional magazines. The words "labor of love" were made for Dave Kosanke and "Liquid Cheese". Now, an Interview from the Abyss with Dave Kosanke! Episode 004: Blood Oaths and Bar Tabs: Horror Conventions and Cinema Wasteland

It's the quest of every ultra-fan: finding fellow obsessives to share in the collective joy. Fan conventions provide a meeting place and an outlet for like-minded folk. Episode 003- Religious (and Sacrilegious) Experiences

E

Sharing the movie experience with a theater full of people can be exhilarating or frightening—sometimes both. You put yourself in the hands of the filmmaker to take that ride, not knowing where or how it's going to end. In rare cases a movie can provide an audience with an ecstatic, transcendent experience, almost religious in its power that leaves you walking on air afterward and running back to grasp that experience again. Sometimes the audience isn't ready for that story or style and the shared experience with the audience is much darker and marked with disapproval…and sometimes outright hatred. It's as if the film has committed sacrilege against your expectations for it. When that happens in a horror film is it the fault of the film or filmmaker, or the audience not prepared for the "horrible-beautiful" imagery and storytelling that challenges the comfort zone? In this episode we discuss religious and sacrilegious experiences in movie theaters, and the unwritten pacts that audiences make with filmmakers, and how the shared experience in a theater affects your own experience of the film Movies Discussed: In 1895, the Lumiere Brothers showed their film "Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station". Episode 002.5: "Addendum of Doom: The Folk Horror Edition"

https://www.facebook.com/hellbentforhorror/ We aren't out of the woods yet... Welcome to Episode 2.5! This is a companion piece to Episode Two, "If You Aren't Afraid in The Woods, You Haven't Gone Deep Enough", which delved into the world of Folk Horror. Here we'll discuss movies and books I'd loved to have talked about in the episode, but they just didn't fit into "the story" completely, or there just wasn't enough time. However, the campfire still has some embers left, and there's a little time before dawn. Just enough time for a few more stories. Enter The Addendum of Doom!
