Find our blog and more resources at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Jasmine shares her experience creating a clothes closet at her school to empower women of domestic violence and low income. More from Jasmine: My name is Jasmine Bartell and I have been a Girl Scout for approximately nine years. My Girl Scout involvement has helped me tremendously. Throughout my years of being in Girl Scouts, I have participated in camping, community service, and leadership experiences. In 2013, I attended camping at Rock Ranch and there I learned how to do the following: cook on a Camp stove, make s'mores over a campfire, and proper usage of a mess kit and mesh bag. I also attended Cabin Camping with my troop (Troop 6099) which was a wonderful experience because we did fun activities such as play games and split up into different teams. Each team had a job, whether it was cleaning up or preparing food. In addition, I have participated in several community service events with my troop. At one of our Girl Scout meetings, we made Kindness Rocks for anyone going through rough times and reminding them that they are strong and can overcome anything. We made cards for foster kids during the holidays and gave out care packages to hospital patients. One Sunday, I organized a breakfast with my troop for the people who attended West Metro Church. In the summer of 2014, I helped plant trees with the community in Atlanta. Furthermore, I have contributed to many cookie booths. I learned how to be a good salesperson and how to market. During September 2014, I earned and completed my Silver Award. I built an alternative trail for bikers who wanted to explore more of the Silver Comet Trail that runs through Hiram, Georgia. During the process of my Gold Award project, I learned that I am capable of being a leader and one step closer to having my own business someday. Ep 25EP 25 Lindsey Pacela Podcast Thoughts for your Thoughts - Girl Scout Gold Award Project
Find our blog and more resources at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Lindsey shares her experience creating a podcast, struggles to find the right Girl Scout troop, and her plans for the future, including journalism and politics. More from Lindsey: I have currently been in Girl Scouts for 13 years, which has been the quite the journey for me. When I was younger, my mom put me in the troop at my school to make friends, learn new skills, and have fun. Truthfully, for the majority of the time, I liked it, but I didn't love it. Up until my freshman year of high school, I had transferred troops a few times because mine didn't always have enough members to carry on. From freshman year to senior, the girls in my troop and myself became closer and closer as time went on. We went a camping trips, did cookie booths, and spent an over night trip at a girl scout house which began to bond us a lot closer than we ever had been before. Girl Scouts really helped me break out of my very small and anxious shell as a child. One of my loves in life right now is being Co- Editor In Chief of my school's yearbook staff with my best friend. I get to do some of my favorite things in that class: writing, taking pictures, editing, managing tasks, and leading a group of people all working together towards such an important cause to us all (that moment of handing out the complete books to students at the end of the year really makes it all worth it). My future plans are to attend the University of La Verne (I was recently accepted to) where I will be double majoring in political science and journalism. I am also planning to run for one of the next open positions on my district's school board (Chino Valley Unified School District) and hope to attain it through my unique perspective as being the first member on it to have ever actually gone through the education system in which it works for (giving me insight into what actually needs to be changed, as well as supported). The ultimate job dream is to become a congress woman, but what my main plan at the moment is, is to become a political journalist, while still serving in my local government. Ep 19Ep 19 Maya Welber Abilities with Possibilities Girl Scout Gold Award Project
Find our blog and more resources at http://heartsofgoldpodcast.com/ Maya shares her experience creating a library craft program for children with special needs. More about Maya: I have been a Girl Scout for about 11 years. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to start my own project as big as this one. Working with children with special needs is something I have always done, so the project takes a special place in my heart because I am able to use my knowledge to make a difference. I think there are so many wonderful organizations that work solely with kids on the spectrum, but I was looking to help create meaningful bonds between peers who are neurotypical and those on the spectrum. I think it is so beneficial for all children to be exposed to different kinds of people who they can learn and grow from. Raising awareness also comes with educating yourself on what you are trying to achieve. I think the kids in the group and supporters I have encountered along the way have taught me so much and I look forward to a new year of crafts! I decided to take action and gather donations from many businesses and organizations that included toys, clothing items, hygiene products, shoes, etc. I had the help from the Haitian Consulate of Orlando to determine the destination for the donations. The Drive lasted over a 6 week period. After sorting by category for each item the weekend it finished, a confirmed weight of 2 ½ tons of donations were donated, 97 boxes total. I needed a way to deliver these donations overseas because, as you can imagine, many laws such as borer laws, water laws and international laws require many permissions and clearances. I contacted multiple cruise lines for the transport. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines offered to ship the donations at no extra cost. I drove with my parents down to Port Canaveral where the company's warehouse is located. I met with the transportation team and they unloaded the 97 boxes onto 4 pallets and proceeded to load them in the warehouse. They would be left there for inspection by K-9 dogs and other scanning procedures to verify the clearance of transportation. The donations would be loaded onto the cruise ship going to its next port of call: Labadee, Haiti. I met the Haitian Consulate of Orlando at the border of Labadee, Haiti and the rest of the country. We loaded the boxes into 3 separate pickup trucks and drove down to the district of Nippes, one the most affected areas of the country. It was about a 5 ½ hour drive. I stepped onto the back of the pickup truck and opened the boxes, handing them out to women, children and families. To see them happy and grateful for these donations made this art of the project successful. Children in the country of Haiti did not get the physical education needed for early childhood or an experience on a swing. I took the initiative to construct the playground in the same district. This would benefit their physical education and have a memorable childhood experience. I had purchased a playground set consisting of two swings, a monkey bar, rock-climbing wall, a dome and a slide and was funded from the Charity Ball hosted duri
