In 2004, the first students began participating in the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program – a private school choice program serving low-income families in Washington, D.C. This year marks 15 years of the scholarship program’s operation in the nation’s capital, with more than 1,650 children currently using D.C. OSP scholarships to pay tuition at participating private schools across the city. School choice programs have increased considerably across the country over the past decade, with more and more students having access to options such as vouchers and education savings accounts. What has been the impact of this consequential school choice measure, what does the future hold for the OSP, and what does it mean for families?
